Ok I can't speak to the game yet, but the intro to dead island is one of the most jarring things I've seen in games in a long while. That may not be a positive thing per se.

Terraria is worth purchasing. Wound up playing far too much of it last night.

stayed at a friend's and played various ps3 things i hadn't seen

arkham city has amazing combat but i wanted to skip everything except the fighting - detective stuff a chore, stealth always a chore, open world with nothing in it a chore. -- plot a total nonsense. if you're playing the goddamn batman the plot shouldn't depend on your being surprised and overwhelmed three times in the first ten minutes; this is narrative-breakingly bad. on the other hand this is the least of the narrative's problems so. i mean, it's really, really fucking stupid. this after batman movies have managed to claw themselves back to moderately not-dumb

deus ex i was awful at because i can't aim with thumbsticks and combining that with a cover system made me completely hopeless, so i just watched the first half hour and asked questions. enjoyed that the apparent major plot twist was obvious in the first two minutes. this game seemed stupider than the original, i must say. -- in the first one at least the immediate HEY CONSPIRACY HEY stuff has the benefit of being totally ott; here it's just lame third-hand cyberpunk, which not even adam jensen's subdermal mirrorshade implants manage to tip over into actually amusing camp

then we spent two hours trying to beat gain ground on one of those sega compilations

wellll that and not wanting to be a bad person but im sure theres a real ilx thread for this argument

i feel like i should be nervous about this wrapped bootleg (viruses? HACKERS???), but it's running so smoothly that i'm just going to hum a happy tune and ignore it

river wolf, Thursday, 29 December 2011 18:36 (twelve years ago) link

ok im going to give it another couple hours tonight but the first hour or so of dead island def doesnt kick you into high gear - as a dude who loves the sorta not right in the head games i feel like theres maybe something great in there, but its pretty yawnworthy so far - pro tip designers, starting out the game with a totally in comprehensible cut scene and then a whole lot of suitcase looting w/o combat or action is def NAGL for the modern era. also i HATE HATE HATE the 4 characters you get to choose from.

PROVEN BY BOOZE SCIENCE, Thursday, 29 December 2011 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah so dead island is pretty much terrible :(

river wolf, Friday, 30 December 2011 05:51 (twelve years ago) link

so im thinking about getting an xbox 360 and im wondering if the 4GB model is enough? im mainly planning on using it to play current gen games but also XBLA stuff like ikaruga, radiant silvergun, bangai-o, etc. dont really plan on downloading movies or any other media. will i regret it if i dont get more HD space? is the HD easily upgradable?

Armin Tamzarian (ok), Friday, 30 December 2011 06:47 (twelve years ago) link

some of those xbla games can be pretty big (radiant is about 500m iirc) and they go upto about 1GB; a lot of xbox games run more smoothly when installed to the HDD too (about 6GB installation)

you don't necessarily have to get the 250GB tho because you can use USB sticks as memory (limited to 16GB sticks)

(╯°□°)╯┻━zǝɹɐns sınl━┻ (cccccc), Friday, 30 December 2011 07:37 (twelve years ago) link

i would get the 250, i install most of my games on my 360 too.

i regretted not getting the larger ps3, i have to keep deleting games to make room.

Fozzielad, Friday, 30 December 2011 09:52 (twelve years ago) link

Apple's "12 days" freebie today is that sonic kart racing thing, haven't tried it yet but it reviewed pretty well, probably worth grabbing.

def interested in corpse party for the psp:

looks like some kind of jrpg/visual novel/survival horror/battle royale hybrid which is right up my alley tbqh

xpost

i like this bit in the description of King Cashing in the app store:

Here's a little fact about the game: I got the idea while playing Kairosoft's Game Dev Story! At one point in the game, I made a game with the Slots RPG combination and that got me wondering what a real Slots RPG game would look like. So I dropped the game and started taking notes of what came to mind. I also drew some mockups to have a better idea of what I had in mind. 5 months later, here's King Cashing! So, hum, thanks Kairosoft!

Z S, Friday, 30 December 2011 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

king cashing is 2$, not free

polyphonic, Friday, 30 December 2011 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

thought about using a gift certificate to pick up a couple of older PC games that might actually run on my system; opted for an Earthbound ROM instead.

Simon H., Friday, 30 December 2011 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

there's a lite version. i just spent about an hour playing it (lite), and i imagine that it's probably worth $2 for the full version.

Z S, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

anyone been doing the Steam Great Gift Pile? i got two average indie games and three worthless coupons.

thompp, Saturday, 31 December 2011 00:43 (twelve years ago) link

I bought the full king cashing and it is like a slot machine version of Dungeon Raid aka just what I wanted it to be.

polyphonic, Saturday, 31 December 2011 00:59 (twelve years ago) link

Final verdict - dead island is a pile of shit, but was exchangeable for deus ex, so now I am trying that. What I really want is a used copy of el shaddai tho, but none at my GameStop :(

So I'm watching Oklahoma! on TCM and thinking -- what would video games have been like if we had the technology to make and play them in the 30s, 40s and 50s? Would we have had musical video games? (Freddy Farkas: Frontier Pharmacist, the Musical!) I think Roberta Williams should start work on this immediately.

Mordy, Saturday, 31 December 2011 03:15 (twelve years ago) link

king cashing was free for awhile i guess; twas when i got it. it is weirdly addictive.
um, i got a wireless xbox controller for my pc. The fucking thing doesn't come with button mapping. I don't wanna have to pay ten bucks for xpadder and not have it work; can anyone swear by it or help me figure a better solution?

Spacemen 3 userpic/icon, shouldn't be too hard to spot

kingfish sandbox bonaparte, Saturday, 31 December 2011 04:46 (twelve years ago) link

you can use JoyToKey instead of xpadder, its free
http://www-en.jtksoft.net/
switch on controller before running the program
click the Preferences tab on the right and tick "use axes other than x and y" to activate 2nd thumbstick and "use pov switches" for dpad. change threshold to taste (30% a good starting point)
mapping instructions here http://www.instructables.com/id/Use-an-Xbox-360-controller-as-a-mouse/step4/JoyToKey-Basics/

Today I have played Binding of Isaac until my wrists hurt.

At one point I had wings, three eyes, a turd on my head and a little angry sneer after making a pact with the devil. I was delighted by each and every one of my adjustments. And then I got stamped on and died. Good times!

Thank you Mordy for your championing of this game and my consequent carpal tunnel syndrome.

kingfish sandbox bonaparte, Saturday, 31 December 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

Binding of Isaac totaly rules, but when played it quite intensively for a few days I had to take a break for a month now. It just got too repetitive and tiring.
