dear stet, you are truly the best. i hope this has not been a huge hassle for you. <3

^^ just wanna formally apologise for turning up in the middle of your thanksgiving dinner, also, i had this picture of a suggestive-looking coathook that i needed to post to the 'i don't know where to put this' thread but which in retrospect i should have waited to act on.

hope it didn't interrupt your holiday x

That would have made more sense if I'd used the full picture, with the actual "HULLO CLOUDS" quote, dammit.

regardless THANK YOU!

SockPuppetHand, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

The sandbox doesn't keep emails around for long -- if you hadn't been on it in a while you'd have to re-register.

ILX accounts are no good here, either.

stet, Monday, 28 November 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

ahhh i see.

Migrating to the cloud? Sounds like a euphemism for death.

how long until ilx is back?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 29 November 2011 13:29 (twelve years ago) link

no it is gone forever (good riddance) this is just intended as a kind of methadone style wind-down, last goodbyes etc

Never translate German (schlump), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 13:33 (twelve years ago) link

i wondered if it would make sense to confront whatever long-standing tip-toed around structural issues ilx has, re: servers and stuff, while we're all here and it isn't going on anyway, but obviously taking on a whole new project might not totally be how stet wants to spend the dual-holiday period between now & the end of the year

Never translate German (schlump), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 13:35 (twelve years ago) link

yeah spill it how much dough do we gotta come up with so this doesn't keep happening?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 29 November 2011 13:43 (twelve years ago) link

i don't really know yet bc like schlump says we need to work out what the best thing to do is.

The situation now is pretty different from when we last did this in 2006 -- there are more hosting options, some of them are cheaper, and also ILX is almost twice the size it was then. There are also virtual servers, which weren't really up to the job back then but definitely are now.

I'm waiting on quotes from lots of different people to see what all this would add up to.

Also, this sandbox is being hosted on Amazon EC2, to let me get a feel for how much that would cost. So far it looks like a good deal -- and it's v. fast and has the best backup options of all them.

Given all this, i think it's probably going to be at least a week or two before we have somewhere big enough to bring ilx back up.

(I'm also looking at how I can share out some of the tech side stuff, so it's not just me going "bugger" on an iPad with crappy 3g in arrivals lounges when it breaks when I'm away, as it nearly always seems to do.)

stet, Tuesday, 29 November 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

stet i wonder if instead you should think about restricting your movements, & maybe spending more time just 'on call' monitoring ilx through the holidays, overnight, during times at which electrical surges have been reported in the continental US &c

godspeed w/all of that, i'm glad that there's something useful about the sandbox being here because it's pretty comfortable and super sufficient in the interim

Never translate German (schlump), Tuesday, 29 November 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

if amazon is working then rad, but in case you need more oompf you might find this table useful http://blog.pinboard.in/2011/08/a_short_rant_about_hosting/

very very very grateful for the sandbox but bookmarking not working - just me? I'm using Firefox.

ljubljana, Saturday, 3 December 2011 04:57 (twelve years ago) link

My bookmarking wasn't working, then randomly started, then might have stopped again. They're not showing up in Zing either.

aldo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:31 (twelve years ago) link

For zing, check you have new-style bookmarking set in prefs, that you don't have a sneaky uppercase letter in your login email, and that you're using red-icon zing.

I have seen a few bookmarking errors on the server, will take a look.

stet, Saturday, 3 December 2011 12:46 (twelve years ago) link

Seems to be working in Zing now without me doing anything. How odd.

aldo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 13:29 (twelve years ago) link

Working for me now, thanks!
