TS: bored vs. garden-variety lazy

whoop de doodle (kenan), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

the though of having to do actual work has led me to procrastinate something awful. therefore, 97% for me.

molly (molly d), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

completely

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

utterly.

patita (patita), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

And yet there are lots of interesting things to do in the world. Even on the screen in front of you there are far more interesting places to be than here. You people are pathetic! Look, here's an interesting essay on consciousness by John Searle, just for starters:

I am working but that does not mean I am not bored.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:32 (seventeen years ago) link

At work too. I have a supremely crappy Brazilian book in front of me and I have to figure out what it's about and give it a call number. Wahoo!

molly (molly d), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm converting old tables-based HTML pages into css based layouts. which is about as fun as watching paint dry.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Am confused about how something Brazilian can be crappy.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 16 October 2006 14:41 (seventeen years ago) link

constantly flicking between refreshing thehold, my call stack, my email.

so far today thehold has been more 'frantic' than work.

ste, Monday, 16 October 2006 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh lordy. The HTML / CSS conversion is a hoot. I feel your pain.

The record for the book was utter crap, and I'm having to fix it, and give it proper subject headings, like:

650 0 Brazilian newspapers ǂz Brazil ǂz São Paulo (State) ǂx History ǂy 20th century.

63000 Folha de S. Paulo.

big excitement!

ILX outage interestingly timed to coincide with largest pile of braindead-making busy work since being hired here. Luckily internet patrolling boss is out of town making myspace/youtube/etc fair game.

nklshs (nklshs), Monday, 16 October 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

11% bored. i don't have to turn my term paper in until 3pm and i'm wondering if i should do another draft of it, although honestly i'm sick of thinking about it and i want it out of my hands already.

jbr, Monday, 16 October 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Oy Jody, never raise the bar. They'll just expect something even more polished next time!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 16 October 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 October 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

laurel, this is my last ever assignment for that class, and i don't think i have that prof again until next year. he is a pretty important (and omnipresent) guy within the department though.

jbr, Monday, 16 October 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

44% bored. I have kind of a lot of homework to do for tomorrow and I am going to a concert tonight so I really should be doing it NOW since work is ultra quiet and boss is gone for TWO WEEKS YAY.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 16 October 2006 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I am getting a slew of annoying, poorly cataloged books with questionable subject matter (i.e. WTF are you talking about?).

I need a drink.

molly (molly d), Monday, 16 October 2006 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, Mister Secrets-Keeper.

Nothing so mysterious. More like folks reviewing coding options and some practical suggestions to reduce the poxy fuling and etc.

I just had bacon, eggs, biscuits and grits for lunch. Does anybody else up in this thing wash the dishes right after they have something really unhealthy, to hide the evidence from yourself? "If the cleaning up was that fast, there couldn't have been so much cholesterol in it, right? Right!"

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 16 October 2006 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

No way. I love staring at the pan full of bacon grease on my stove. No, not really. I just ate a left over fried pork chop for lunch, and immediately took my dish to the sink to clean it up, as everyone else has a properly balanced, food-group-representin' lunch. I was mildly self-concious.

molly (molly d), Monday, 16 October 2006 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Just eat lard. Then nobody can give you crap because you're being bold.

Does it make anyone else sad when your boss, who happens to sit right next to you, sends you an email about scheduling a meeting with just the 2 of you?

molly (molly d), Monday, 16 October 2006 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Sad? Or nervous?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 16 October 2006 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

No, not really nervous. Just sad. Like, I sit one cube over. It's not that far a walk. I can hear you typing, yet I get an email instead. It's weird.

molly (molly d), Monday, 16 October 2006 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

totally normal (but still kinda dumb) if the scheduling email also reserves the room in some weird office intranet system.

patita (patita), Monday, 16 October 2006 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I guess it does. And she's a supervisor, so I guess she has to document these sorts of transactions. I've been at my job for over a year, and still in training (UGH!). Hopefully tomorrow's meeting discussing me getting rid of my Jr. Cataloging wings and being cut loose. Fingers crossed.

Regardless, it still makes me sad. LACK OF HUMAN INTERACTION MAKES MOLLY SAD.

Uppity undergrads are no fun at all. First, you'll want to slap them for their poor choice of footwear (must you really wear flip flops in January?), and then you'll want to slap them for their flippant attitude toward you, the person who is trying to help them out with their information needs.

(woah -- long day -- i could still use that drink)

Not saying you're like this, but I've been dealing with a co-worker who I've had to resort exclusively e-mailing with because her "word of mouth" is a lot harder to back-up when she fucks up.

The other day, I e-mailed her about some work that wasn't getting done. Fifteen seconds after I hit send, she's paging me over the intercom. So when she tells me to substitute A for B and it comes back to bite the company on the ass, I'll have no record of her ever telling me to do the switch. Fuck that.

Again, not saying that's why your boss is e-mailing you like that, but maybe it's just for accountability purposes.
