Windows Movie Maker sucks (sort of)

Actually it's functionality is exactly what I need for stop motion animations, I record my frames with MonkeyJam and then produce everything in MM.
The only trouble is it keeps crashing and wrecking other parts of my PC.

So what's a good alternative to MM that includes the same visual/audio timeline capabilities ?

(and preferably free)
