[Verse One: Coolio]
Now I've seen places and faces
And things you ain't never thought about thinkin
If you ain't peeped then you must be drinkin and smokin
Pretending that you're loc'in but you're broken, let me get you open
Now little Timmy got his diploma and little Jimmy got life
And Tamikra around the corner just took her first hit off the pipe
The other homie shot the other homie and ran off with his money
And when the other homies heard about it they thought that it was funny
But who's the dummy, cause, now you done lost the hustler
A down-ass brother done been replaced by a buster
And though I got love for ya, I know I can't trust ya
Cause my crew is rollin homers and your crew is rollin dusters
And just because of that you act like you don't like the brother no more
Uh, I guess that's just the way it goes
I ain't tryin to preach, I believe I can reach
But your mind ain't prepared, I'll see you when you get there

[Chorus]
I'll see you when you get there
If you ever get there
See you when you get there
I'll see you when you get there
If you ever get there
See you when you get there

[Verse Two: Lek Ratt - 40 Thevz]
More temptation than faith, I guess we livin for the day
I seen a man get swept off his feet, by a boy with an AK
The situation so twisted everybody gettin lifted
I'm just tryin to take care of my kids and handle my business
Cause it way too serious so you gotta pay close attention
So you don't get caught sittin' when they come and do all the gettin
Life is a big game so you gotta play it with a big heart
Some of us gotta run a little faster cause we gotta lay the struggle
I'd be a fool to surrender when I know I can be a contender
If everybody's a sinner then everybody can be a winner
No matter your rag colour, deep down we all brothers
And regardless of the time, somebody up there still love us
I'ma scuffle and struggle until I'm breathless and weak
I done strived my whole life to make it to the mountain peak
Always keep reaching sure to grab on to something
I'll be there when you get there with muted sounds bumpin

[Chorus]

[Verse Three: PS - 40 Thevz]
You need to loosen up and live a little
And if you got kids let them know how you feelin
For your own sake give a little
Oh, you don't want to hear that, you busy tryina stack
And keep up with the Joneses, takin advantage of your own
The realest homies that you've been knowing for the longest
But some ain't missing a good thing until it's gone
Could have built an empire if not for the jealousy that divides us
We prefer to keep our eyes shut till it's right
When there's something involved that we desire
So hold your head up high if your're poor and righteous
I know times seem strife, and problems seem endless
But at the times of despair we gotta put ourselves together
And if you feel you're out of the game then you need to get back in it
Cause nothing worse than a quitter
you gotta face responsibility one day, my brother
So wrap up your pity and turn it to ambition
And put your vehicle in 'drive' and stop by my side

[Chorus]

[Outro: Coolio]
As we walk down the road of our destiny
And the time comes to choose which shall it be
The wide and crooked, or the straight and narrow
We got one voice to give and one life to live
Stand up for something or lie down in your game
Listen to the song that we sing
It's up to you to make it big
I guess I'll see you when you see me

[Chorus] - to fade

M Grout (Mark Grout), Thursday, 22 February 2007 12:37 (seventeen years ago) link

This whole nu-ILX thing was just a huge stress test to see if Grimly and Stet's server could stand up to the strain of the enormous frenzy of dog-porn downloads they'll need it for in future.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 February 2007 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

curses. matt's got us.

You're dropping the sandbox?

er, obviously, dude. WTF would be the point of two ILXes?

the sandbox was originally meant to be a code testing ground. that was all.

then, during the ILX outage of late last year, it became a replacement ILX.

again, when JW ensured the real ILX1 got closed for good, this became the real ILX.

now the real ILX is back. once the apache issues are fixed so everyone can connect (mitya and noodle vague, for instance, can't get in at all) this will be closed down.

grimly fiendish (simon), Thursday, 22 February 2007 12:53 (seventeen years ago) link

to make it clear: the sandbox is not running on the henfap server that was bought with the cash raised last year. it runs on server space in the US somewhere that belongs to stet (99.9%) and myself (0.1%).

seriously? fix new ilx and I won't care but really as everyone knows, it looks like shit!

Dead Dylan Thomas (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, it's so radically different to this, isn't it?

maybe if people didn't bandy around phrases such as "looks like shit" and appreciated that, as people keep saying, nu-ILX was rushed into being and still needs some work, the coding and design team might be able to spend less time defending themselves and more time listening to what people are saying.

i have to say, though: if i was involved with the design and coding, which i'm not, i'd pay far more attention to the many posters who articulate their points reasonably than i would to the ones who say "dudes it looks like shit LOL at your unpaid toil".

just a thought, though. just a thought.

the new lines between posts are sleeker than these crappy old hrs

IMPORTANT ISSUES i kno...

resumo impetus (blueski), Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm just saying, a lot of people waste a lot of time throughout the day on it, and it really doesn't make any sense to change the design when there is nothing wrong with the old design. Now if (if if if) the new boards have to look that way because of the new security measures, fine. But you know, if it ain't broke why fix it?

Like why is there so much space between posts over there? Is there a good reason for it?

Dead Dylan Thomas (Party with me Punker), Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

appreciated that, as people keep saying, nu-ILX was rushed into being and still needs some work,

Maybe if it wasn't rushed into being and was only unveiled when it was really up to snuff, all that outrage wouldn't have happened?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I've got them both open at once now and there's no difference in the space between posts. Have you looked since they tweaked it?

Also THEY HAVE ALREADY SAID they're going to make it look more like the original ILX. FFS.

I think the new threads look better now fwiw.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 February 2007 14:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Also: I can articulate my displeasure with the new boards and also be grateful (which I am) at the work gone into it.

Maybe if it wasn't rushed into being and was only unveiled when it was really up to snuff, all that outrage wouldn't have happened?

That one I can and will blame on Jon. Fucking with old ILx when it was creaking along on its deathbed was a dick move.

stet (stet), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Also: I can articulate my displeasure with the new boards and also be grateful (which I am) at the work gone into it.

But doing it without looking like a dick...THAT is the real challenge.

resumo impetus (blueski), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

That one I can and will blame on Jon.

That's bullshit. You didn't have to kill the old board, regardless of how little you trust Jon or any other random hacker who might have tried to exploit the security holes in the boards.

Jon may heave been tthe impetus but you made the decision; blaming Jon basically allows you to foist unfinished code on people without taking any of the heat or responsibility for people's negative reactions to it.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

i'll be here forever as my company blocks out old and new ilx now. see ya around again.

yeah stet and keef have definitely not been taking any fucking heat, at all.

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

You know what I mean, dude.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

You didn't have to kill the old board, regardless of how little you trust Jon or any other random hacker who might have tried to exploit the security holes in the boards.

Once it happens, would you really keep the board up knowing how volatile it is?

resumo impetus (blueski), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I do, and I don't disagree with the idea that using "Jon" as shorthand for "serious security issues that could conceivably be used to delete or irreperably fuck with the entirety of the db" is a little disingenuous. Stet genuinely believed that there had been a remote privilege escalation to get admin on the db itself, which is one step away from rooting the machine. There hasn't been another backup done on old-ilx since months ago and he didn't want to risk it. I can sort of blame him for being paranoid and then I look at shit that happens in my industry and I can't blame him too much really.

At some point people should be able to actually blame something bad on Jon and not experience weird non-sequitur backlash from 75% of the posters because they've never seen a script kiddie before and think it's all just a bit of fun. (not saying you are part of that)

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

he should've foreseen what would happen.

resumo impetus (blueski), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Me personally? I don't know. Given the existence of the sandbox and people's general contentment with it, I may have. I would not have singled out a specific poster for the move, though, and I would not have accelerated the rollout of the new ILX code. Regardless, I would expect that, at a bare minimum, a vocal minority would disagree violently with whatever decision I made and a majority of the people who did agree with me or support my decisions wouldn't feel like they had to say anything; that's just the way it goes.

(xpost: Oh, don't think for a second that I don't think Jon was being harmless! He wasn't! I am, in harsher terms, making the point stated in your first sentence. People should blame Jon for being a poor-impulse-contol fuckwit rather than for the way nu-ILX looked upon rollout.)

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Thursday, 22 February 2007 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

(Er, horrible grammar in that xpost. Jon was being a gigantic douche for no real reason but I don't see why he should be blamed for aesthetic decisions on nu-ILX.)

resumo impetus (blueski), Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I prefer having just regular old html hr's with width arguments and nothing else TBH. The white space isn't broken up properly on the new site, it's one thing old html ILX does extremely well

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago) link

when people quote other people, the double dash is really, really, really unbelievable useful from a readability standpoint. if you look at the excelsior thread posts since nu-ILX has gone up I hope you'll see what I mean

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I genuinely believe if we want the vast majority of people to stick around and accept the new server and new code then we ought to make it as much like the old ilx in presentation/look-and-feel as is possible. there is absolutely nobody who could argue that this format here is broken; it held up for six years or whatever, it can hold up for longer.

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:52 (seventeen years ago) link

i am pretty much fine with it visually, as it currently looks (tho tweaking is obv appareciated) -- it's 100% the loss of features that is keeping me from switching... and while i know that other work needs to be done, it would be nice maybe if the sandbox could keep chugging along until shit like the forced re-logging-in is changed

(the only other things on my wishlist are a) the return of html and b) the return of display names, and while i know no consensus will ever be reached on what everyone wants back, i think those are both kinda popular opinions)

a_p (a_p), Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:52 (seventeen years ago) link

i didn't even notice the double dash absence on nu-ilx to be honest! quotes tend to be italic anyway so...

resumo impetus (blueski), Thursday, 22 February 2007 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I completely and utterly agree with this. I only bashed together the first CSs in five minutes to make it not look zany different (which it did before!)

I'm still in favour of stylesheets as much as possible though, instead of forcing it in HTML. My shitty phone browser used to grin at ILX HRs.

The signature line needs fixing too. I can't say this enough: Yes the look is anus, Yes we're fixing it asap. The new site is ont about the presentation, I probably haven't made that clear enough. That aspect of it is not "new ilx" -- it's "in the fucking way". New ILX is the fast threads, the no-breaking down, the no-security-holes and the waves of irritation.
