1. Threaten to shoot your roommates if they don't come around to your way of seeing things.

2. Stick up a bank/liquor store/gas station.

I do.

currently owned:
CZ 75B (9mm semi-auto)
Sig P226 (")
Ruger New Vaquero (semi-reproduction of the Colt Single Action Army, Old West gun)
Smith & Wesson 586 (.357 revolver)
Walther P22 (.22 semi-auto)
Browning Buckmark (")
Para-Ordnance PX745 (.45 semi-auto)

also an AR-15, a semi-automatic reproduction of the Tommy Gun, a Marlin lever-action cowboy gun in .44 Magnum, a Mosin-Nagant carbine (Soviet rifle of WWII - you can get one for $70 all over the place) and a couple of cheap .22 rifles.

All locked in a safe (except the rifles), unloaded. I don't keep anything for 'home defense' - single, childless dudes in OK neighborhoods aren't exactly prime targets for rape and murder.

Sick Mouthy (sickmouthy), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 11:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't see the point of owning a gun. I would certainly not want one for self-defense as in most cases you tend to shoot a family member instead of a burglar, no? Read that somewhere. On top of that you'd need ot be a VERY good gunman to be able to shoot quicker than the burglar IF he's carrying a gun. If he isn't toting a gun, hello prison time! So no, I don't think I'd want one. I did/do consider having a big ole dog (here in the jewellery shop) but then I'd probably be more scared of the dog than the burglar. What to do?? I do want want protection, you see.

nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 12:58 (seventeen years ago) link

On top of that you'd need ot be a VERY good gunman to be able to shoot quicker than the burglar IF he's carrying a gun.

this is why they have shooting ranges, to train in. you're not born a good gunman -- and neither is the burglar.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, he has the advantage of knowing he's in a dangerous situation, no? This happened a few times here. One jeweller did manage to shoot the guy but ended up in prison, I think. He shot him in the back or something. I mean, in such situations I'd be so scared, I'd be trembling. A shooting range doesnt seem a good replication of such a situation. (Does that sentence make sense?)

nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:01 (seventeen years ago) link

you could practice by targetting homeless people or something, to get used to the shakes.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm tempted to get a vegetarian rifle, you know, to shoot clay pidgeons with. But they're expensive, and they smell bad and I'm such a clumbsy oaf I'd probably shoot mine own foot off cleaning it.

That said, there are all these article in the local press about how easy and cheap it is to purchase a gun if you live in the MURDER TRIANGLE (Streatham, Peckham, Clapham) but apparently only if you are a schoolchild. Oh well.

My brother used to have a couple of guns for his work. Professional and/or recreational (clay pigeons, target practice at a rifle range, whatever) shooting, I have no problem with. Wee twats fucking at my mates' houses/buses/places of employment, not so high on my list of favourite things.

These are things I have shot it at: skeet (no, not that kind of skeet, Dan), beer and soda cans, targets, and once (very ill-advisedly) fish (thanks dad for explaining the bullets-can-ricochet-off-water thing before I died/killed you on accident).

I had a rusty old revolver of some sort that my ex left after we split. I soaked it in kerosene and used steel wool to get the rust off, and oiled it. I was fascinated with it as a thing—it was pleasant to handle. But then one of my kids found it so I buried it in the back yard.

milo (milo), Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't like gun culture and it seems like a lot of people who own guns are stupid assholes, but I think guns themselves are cool! By which I mean, like, the actual mechanical object. I'm one of those hypocritical people who feel like nobody but themselves is trustworthy with a gun.
It's kind of amazing how common guns are in the United States. Like, even my close friend's super liberal hippy style parents have a couple of rifles and a revolver in a chest in their attic. They just don't go around showing them off like morons.

The people who should have guns are kind of like the people who should be police officers: people who don't want to.

I don't have one now because I live in the city, and my apartment complex forbids guns on the property. And I'm poor. If I ever move back out to the country I'll probably get some.

I own lots of guns, my father has many more. I think some of the uncomfortablity people have with them comes from being raised with the concept that they were some sort of alien object owned by other people.

I'm sure that the concept of "John Justen, heavily armed ILXOR" probably will give some nightmares, tho.

I don't want to shoot anything living, and I don't own any guns and my family never did either. But ummm, guns are a kind (just one kind, before anyone gets bent out of shape) of power. And I like power. So...a working proficiency with firearms would be a good thing in my book, it just hasn't been in the cards yet.

I personally do not own any guns, but my dad does, and I've had plenty of experience shooting them. And this is totally OTM: I own lots of guns, my father has many more. I think some of the uncomfortablity [sic: WAHT] people have with them comes from being raised with the concept that they were some sort of alien object owned by other people.

I don't particularly like gun culture, nor do I like those who vilify it. Both sides are irrationally obsessed with the totemic power of a stupid thing.
