Yellow shells, clapboard house, the occasional burst of well-calibrated weirdness. After andy@grasshopper.org and gygax (both gone but neither forgotten), you have entered my pantheon of favored posters.

remy bean, my mom used to be a geometry teacher and part of her assignments would be to make her students construct objects like that. We had a lot of beautiful thingies (dodecahedrons?) around.

If only we had had a geometry teacher like that, instead of one who just made us use protractors.

I love ammonites! They're my favourite fossil. I'd love to own one the size of a car tyre.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I only have a small one I found on a beach on the Isle of Wight. The really huge ones are amazing but excedingly unlikely you would find your own, and stupid expensive to buy.

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:04 (seventeen years ago) link

The little ones I've got were from a beach on the Isle of Wight, too! Whale Chine, I think. There's a geologist who lives on the island who runs fossil-hunting tours around the south of the island - we bumped into him while we were looking for fossils at the base of the cliff one day, and he told us that someone HAD found a really big ammonite there, just the week before! I was so envious.

Here is my Ammonite!

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e391/marthasminions/ammonite.jpg

and here is my ammonite! I bought it—it wasn't too expensive. In an amazing rock shop on Rt. 180, west of the Petrified Forest in Arizona. They had big slabs of polished petrified wood made into coffee tables—talk about shattering wine glasses. Those were thousands of dollars, but then they had tons of baskets of other stuff. Shark's teeth, agate marbles, you name it.
I would LOVE to fine one, though. A friend of mine just came back from Costa Rica with the most amazing cylindrical beach-stones, one baby-blue! Also a fossil snail shell, blackish-gray with white quartz-looking crystals in the groove of the whorls.
