when you're queuing up at a supermarket, do you always join the shortest queue? Does it annoy you sometimes that other queues that seemed longer before would actually become shorter than yours?

What I hate is when I find a really short queue, then realise I've forgotten something, and by the time I get back someone else has taken my place in the short queue, grrr!

I'm not that bad at the shops, usually. But ATM queues, grrr, they make me really angry.

i look to see what the other shoppers are buying or who the other shoppers are. single dudes with an armload of groceries? i'll line up 4 deep behind them over one middle aged+ housewife who will go apeshit if she thinks she's been overcharged when it's usually the price she saw was for a different sized item.

now i try to only use the self-checkout.

Often, though, I will just get in the queue behind the cutest boy or the quietest kids. Usually the latter, as there aren't many cute boys in Streatham Common Sainsburys, alas.

I pick the oldest person at the checkout. At some of our supermarkets here, we have some teenagers working checkout and they seem to sigh out of boredom every time they scan an item. They make it seem like such a huge chore to sell me my groceries.

I DID THAT LAST NIGHT!!!!

For reasons unknown there are no ATM checkouts at Clapham Sainsbury's.

But I usually don't have a problem since I make a point of purchasing FIVE ITEMS OR LESS at any one time.

whatever line I pick turns out to be the wrong one.

one time i joined the queue which had the prettiest cashier. it was pretty long but it was worth it for her crooked smile even tho i was only buying 1 pint of milk and lots of toilet paper.

hey guys whats up with how at Wal Mart and similar stores you have to pick one particular line to buy cigarettes? so confusing!!!!

hm (modestmickey), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

sometimes I go to bed at night, and when I wake up in the morning, realise I've been asleep for the previous 7 hours.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

do you know anyone who has ever been a store's 1 millionth customer or similar? omg that would rule!

resumo impetus (blueski), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

getting 8 hours of sleep is the best

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

this is all interesting enough, but what really irritates me is having to tip. let's talk about tipping!

unfished business (Scourage), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

how does one possibly figure out what 20% is without a calculator? so confusing!!!!

the lex (modestmickey), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

i mean, round UP or DOWN? americans!!!!

the lex (modestmickey), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

it's funny, in America tipping is mandatory. But over here it's different. Over here tipping isn't mandatory.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

sometimes, i consciously tip more than the customary 10%. this normally happens when i have enjoyed the food more than usual.

sometimes, i do not.

unfished business (Scourage), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

have you ever joined a supermarket queue because the cashier is hott, even though the queue is long, but then because the queue is so long by the time you get there they have already changed shift, and you end up getting served by an UGMO???

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

ronan OTM!!

hm (modestmickey), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

kevin OTM. In a tiny town like this one, there are also checkers I know to avoid no matter how short the line is.

ACtually, this is true, even in big supermarkets. There was this one woman who asked me EVERY SINGLE TIME I came through her line if I knew about sag paneer because I was always buying paneer. "Yes, I would tell her, hence all the spinach in my basket!" But she still kept asking me.

I suppose actually it was quite nice that she cared. But I would have liked it better had she actually remembered who I was instead of asking the same question every time.

cashiers have name tags but we do not. it doesn't seem fair really.
