i have a new macbook pro & it only gets about 2-3 hrs of juice from the battery. I'm flying 14 hrs next week. do planes have any power sources for laptops, or do you need to run off yr batteries? is there anyway to extend the power you get from batteries?

When you do get on the plane, be sure to complete the following:

1. Quietly and calmly open up your laptop case.

2. Remove your laptop and start it up.

3. Make sure the person in the seat next to you can see the screen.

4. Open your email to this message.

5. Close your eyes and tilt your head up to the sky.

7. Then hit this link: http://www.thecleverest.com/countdown.swf

sorry, i'm a moron. 3 mins of googling answered the first part of my question: some planes have power ports and some don't, the one I'll be on doesn't.
so how to extend the power that I do have available? just buy another battery and have 6 hrs of power for the trip?

Generally only and the front of the plane as well. There isn't the power on the plane for more than that.

if anyone is actually interested in this question, this site is helpful in determining if your flight/seat will have laptop power ports accessible:

no shit, but I have some writing to do and i like to write when I'm between places - like opn planes and trains. that's why I asked. I'm aware of the existence of books but again, thanks for all the sanctimonious useless advice, ilx!

I wish I'd known of SeatGuru before spending 100 or so hours on planes last year.

is there anyway to extend the power you get from batteries?
is about the only bit we'd have been any use on. And saying "turn down the backlight; turn off wireless and bluetooth" isn't all that insightful. Still:

you are flying 14 hours nonstop? i would think you would have a connection somewhere where you can recharge in the terminal.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

If you plan to be on a lot of 14-hour flights, a Dana would be a sound investment. 25 hours of battery life for all the word processin' you can stand to do.

direct flight from toronto -> tokyo = 14 hrs

fritz wollner (fritz), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

The Neo is even cheaper: $249. 700 hours of battery life.

700 hours on three AA batteries!

that's an interesting idea, thanks! I don't know if I'd use it enough to justify it, especially after blowing so much on the mac already... still, i do like the idea of using that to write on at home too, just to get rid of the temptation of the web.

fritz wollner (fritz), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

You could just buy a spare macbook pro battery to swap in. I know some people do that.

Also, no good for a laptop, but for an iPod or whatever, I'm intrigued by this product, which claims to keep USB-powered items going inflight using the headphone jack:

i like the *idea* of those dana and neo writing/email machines but a) they should weigh less than a pound, and fold down to be smaller, so you could bring both yr laptop and that, and b) could they be any uglier?? they remind me of my brother wordprocessor c. 1993

more ideal thing: ipod-like device that is wider than it is long (therefore wider screen) with wordprocessing etc and battery that lasts a v long time, plus foldable keyboard. i would think this exists.

+ you're not supposed to have your phone on on a plane anyway innit

You can once it has taken off (I think).

You can have your phone on, if it's radios (GSM/3G/Bluetooth/Wifi) are turned off, on most airlines, but ti depends on the civil aviation rules of the country that the airline is registered in.
