when does simpsons end?

jhoshea (jhoshea), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Matt Groening said that he'll keep doing it as long as the show makes a profit(or something to this effect).

Do they still have Professor Frink in current episodes? He was possibly the only character not mentioned or shown in that trailer.

i was in jr high when this shit started ffs i remember my friend dan lent me a tape of the first few episodes and i was all lol soon after the bart tshirts were everywhere

I watched nu-Simpsons last night for the first time in years and there was a lot of Frink. Pretty funny too.

I hate trying to watch trailers at apple.com. The quicktime movies there always sieze up for me.

resumo impetus (blueski), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:50 (seventeen years ago) link

There's some funny slapstick with Homer in the trailer.

I wonder if the whole thing is going to be about parodying blockbuster cliches or if that's just for the trailer.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

c'mon, there was the episode where homer drove an ice cream truck and they spent three minutes parodying the ali g opening in it to no discernible purpose. of course it'll be all about parodying blockbuster cliches.

The slapstick jokes in trailers 1 and 2 were pretty crappy, and trailer 3 managed to tell zero about the actual plot, except that Burns is going to blow up the world or something.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought the original Simpsons movie trailer was kind of great.

id much rather have it be over-the-top jerry bruckheimer stuff like the south park movie than just a bunch of wack nu-simpsons gags

and what (ooo), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, the South Park movie was great. Though Simpsons has always been more focused on domestic life and family than South Park, which is more about the world.

Last nights was really funny at the beginning, but they didn't follow through well enough (more 40 Up less Homer's lies.)

have you actually watched the simpsons in the last 9 or 10 years?

Not really. I haven't had a TV set for 5 years, and I'm not sure if they're even showing it here anymore.

'the simpsons aren't going to finland!'

I mean, the show has always had political jabs, but are you saying it has now gone fully political like South Park?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Last nights was really funny at the beginning, but they didn't follow through well enough (more 40 Up less Homer's lies.)

I liked the bit w/the crazy cat lady.

The Many Faces of Gordon Jump (Leon), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

The only part of the trailer I lolled at was Homer and the pig.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

i hate to even mention this but it bothers me that they treat all the characters as the same age now - isnt smithers in his 50s? wasnt moe one of the original lil rascals ('was it the ugly one? were you the ugly one?')? the fat tony & sea captain & the crazy cat lady are the same age as comic book guy?

and what (ooo), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

FWIW I think Simpsons Hit & Run (game) has a higher funny quotient than any combined total level of funny for all episodes of the past 7+ years, plus it is interactive.

nklshs (nklshs), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmm, it seems they're showing 17th season episodes here, are they any good? Maybe I could try to see it at a friend's place.

it seems like every couple years i move up the cut-off point a couple years - even the gay marriage episode, which i hated 2 years ago, is responsible for 2 of my most quoted lines ('i'm not gay! im nothing yet!' and 'i'm afraid im going to have to leave you hanging there')

and what (ooo), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

The original movie that MY COUSIN MATT GROENING screened for me was a lot funnier than this.

this actually looks alright? better than the teaser trailer i saw before.

a_p (a_p), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:37 (seventeen years ago) link

It looks like they've finally bothered to use the kind of 3d animation Futurama used right from the getgo. It looks ok actually, though I suppose all the best jokes are in the trailer as usual.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

My only real gripe is why the fuck is it called "The Simpsons Movie"? I mean gah. Surely there is a semblance of a storyline. Surely that could give the movie a NAME.

Last nights was really funny at the beginning, but they didn't follow through well enough (more 40 Up less Homer's lies.)

which is their m.o. for the past 8 seasons or so. and then about 12 minutes in bart goes "tony hawk!" or "50 cent!" and you're wondering why you're still watching.

I liked the bit w/the crazy cat lady.

good lord.

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 01:32 (seventeen years ago) link

A running joke between me and my brother, (we regularly watched The Simpsons up to about season 11, even though it was dead by season 8, and we've seen bits of a few episodes since then) is saying that we bet there's a whole episode about some minor character who's only appeared once or twice in the show, based on the newer episodes' constant use of one-joke characters like Disco Stu, e.g.

"I bet there's a whole episode about Leopold"
or
"I bet there's a whole episode about the Very Tall Man"

Aaron Godfrey (aaron d.g.), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 01:49 (seventeen years ago) link

nullfame OTM about the 12 minutes in/famous person shit. It is the main thing I'm getting a bit sick of. Especially how they tackle it so clumsily, eg "look, it's movie star Mel Gibson!" or wtf ever, even if that's supposed to be part of the "joek".

I dont know why it has gone that way - Futurama handled havnig famous people on its show all the time in a really funny elegant original way - look at Al Gore ("I have ridden the mighty moon worm!") and Lucy Liu becoming all those Liubots and beating people up.

Instead we get weak fiddy "raps" and "hey, stay in school kids" and wtf. I mean I've been defending the show for a long time but it really is reaching. And the thing that makes me cranky is it just doesn't need to. I think they need new writers, not to stop neccesarily.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 02:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I've always wondered why I hadn't heard people talk about new characters invented over the the last decade. Is "Very Tall Man" the latest regular they came up with? He debuted in "33 Short Films About Springfield"! Or Gil? Are there reoccuring folks after that fans just don't feel like talking about?

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 05:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I very much feel like talking about Gil.

Aaron Godfrey (aaron d.g.), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 06:31 (seventeen years ago) link

they use crazy cat lady a lot now, also the rich texan & disco stu & the yehhhhhssss guy & cookie kwan the realtor who debuted in the same episode as gil (they even ret-conned so her & marge were friends as kids, which is insane) and that judge voiced by the mom from malcolm in the middle and the businesswoman voiced annoyingly by tress macneil

True. Although the Worldload episode was on yesterday, and the exchanges between Michael Chabon and Jonathan Franzen are funny.

Chabon: You couldn't make it up.
Franzen: You mean you couldn't.
Chabon: That's it, Franzen! I think your nose need some corrections!
