Sandbox thread for Ned's and B.L.A.M.'s London appearance 3/3 to 3/10

So here's the deal -- last night B.L.A.M., of DC and bartending thread fame, finally dealt with a small group of ILXors as customers at his place of employment, so we could report on what life is like from the other side. And a good fellow and bartender he is!

As we were all talking, it turned out to our surprise that B.L.A.M. and his wife are going to be in London almost at the same time my friend Hina and I are -- they'll be arriving on Saturday March 3, we arrive on Sunday March 4th -- and we'll all be leaving on Saturday March 10.

So needless to say we talked about ideas for FAPs and more besides given our various schedules. Right now the two things I'm thinking of are these:

Thursday the 8th -- Ed and I had already talked about an evening of cooking and eating in; he'll have to say how many people his place can hold but let's see if we can plan something around this!

Friday the 9th -- the end of week dinner out/FAP/whatever to wrap things up! As Matt and Evan had been raving about the Tayyab Kebab House I was thinking that could be good; however, if we're going to be a large party of folks, would that be the best spot? B.L.A.M. notes he and his wife could only make dinner since they'll have to leave very early on the 10th.

Other stuff can be on the cards as desired, of course, as we all have our own schedules and plans; in my case I'll be busy with shows on Monday and Wednesday and I've set Tuesday aside to meet up with some other folks, but there's lunches or early evening get-togethers or whatever. I know B.L.A.M. said he wanted to spend a day just in a pub somewhere relaxing and doing nothing given he'll have just come off taking the bar exam again, which strikes me as a noble goal. He's also mentioned going to the British Museum, which I wouldn't mind doing again myself; right now I'd like to spend one afternoon in the Tate Modern, where I haven't been in seven years.

Anyway, talk/suggestions/whatever here and we'll revive the ILX thread as needed. See everyone in a couple of weeks!

Tayyabs is fine for large groups, I think we managed about 15-20 of us last time. If I'm honest though I'd prefer a bog standard meet up in a pub type FAP though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 18 February 2007 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, bog standard fap if possible! Though, ya know no need to go out of your way or anything.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 18 February 2007 17:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm more than fine with that! I could do Tayyab some other night in the week.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 February 2007 17:46 (seventeen years ago) link

So bog standard FAP on the Friday, any particular suggestion/standby?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 February 2007 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

on the tuesday, which is the 6th, i'm probably going to be going to a modernist ballet my friends pil and galia are putting on - details here - http://www.kollectiv.co.uk/News.html

this http://www.whitechapel.org/content.php?page_id=3069 is happening on sunday march 4th and sounds like a cool way to discover bits of east london. probably not gonna be possible for ned + hina to make it (though the pub at the end was nearly as much fun as the hunt itself last time, WE WUZ ROBBD etc etc) but b.l.a.m. + wife, if you want to join one of our teams (we've got 2 so far, inc some ilxors - me, charlie no 4, andrew f, anna, nobody's prawn - and some not) let me know.

emsk ( emsk ), Sunday, 18 February 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

probably not gonna be possible for ned + hina to make it

We'll be tired as hell -- we're due to arrive at Heathrow at 8:25 pm assuming no delays. If Andrew's with you I just need to know that I can get into his flat somehow!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 February 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

it'll take a couple of hours from landing to get to andrew's place - the actual hunt will probably be over by 6 or 7 or something. we'll just be in the pub shouting after that.

emsk ( emsk ), Sunday, 18 February 2007 18:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Nothing wrong with that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 February 2007 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, I believe there is east-end style country dancing that sunday evening as well.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 18 February 2007 20:12 (seventeen years ago) link

God DAMN, Ned, you miss the Shimura Curves revival by one day. Can't you just fly in for the 3rd March?

i'm down! (not for the dancing, just for beers.)

I'm apparently missing lots of stuff due to this, Kate! If wishes were horses.

BLAM has been advised of this thread but sez he has login problems.

emsk ( emsk ), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

God DAMN! Let's make up our own. Seriously, we could do the best treasure hunt ever. Just not the day after the gig!

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes please. Make it something we can all join in on! (If everyone's up for a day off work.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I think that as penance the Russian should run it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago) link

DO NOT WISH DISASTER UPON OUR TREASURE HUNT!!!

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago) link

well, i booked one team so half of us can do it. i am going to write a begging email to pmu.

emsk ( emsk ), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Clearly we need a pre-treasure hunt everyone-for-themselves treasure hunt to see who gets to represent ILX!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Hold the pre-treasure hunt at Poptimism.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

No Treasure Hunt?? But I was already getting ready!!!

g000blar (g00blar), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Perhaps we shall have to hunt for treasure (beer and roast dinner) in the east end.

Ed (dali), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

And what's stopping us from just showing up at the treasure hunt and taking part? Like shadowing a tour-group at a museum?

g000blar (g00blar), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

You won't win FABULOUS PRIZES. (Even though we WUZ ROBBED!!! at the last one.)

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

well, five of us can still do it. not including the russian, obv. we may have to draw straws.
