Batman Forever? Backdraft? The Patriot?

I don't mind them showing more recent pictures. But shouldn't they be, you know, GOOD pictures?

At least these things are relegated to the wee hours of the morning, but even that doesn't make a lot of sense, if what they're trying to do by airing blockbuster drivel is attract higher ratings.

So what's the deal?

They buy movie rights in parcels, and they have to take shittay stuff along with the stuff they actually want. It's the "Son-in-Law Claus".

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 18 February 2007 13:32 (seventeen years ago) link

But just because they buy it doesn't mean they have to show it, does it?

Hell, I dunno.

i'd say they're definitely changing, not for the better. i miss the friday night horror/cheese blocks.

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Sunday, 18 February 2007 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

These pictures are no doubt related to the "31 Days of Oscar" series which runs through the 2nd or 3rd.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive most other singers could shut up (Factory Samp, Sunday, 18 February 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I know! They've shown 3 bill hurt movies this week!

The RealJTMod (Real JT Mod of Team Courage), Sunday, 18 February 2007 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link

All of the movies listed won FX/costuming Oscars, which was the Oscar category they were cycling through last week or so.

Okay, that makes sense. Except that the movies still suck.

I don't disagree with that assessment.

Allyzay heard you got beat up in a club. (Allyzay Eisenschefter), Sunday, 18 February 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

some of the old movies they show suck too.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

30 Days of Oscar merely shows how artless the academy always has been.

Michael White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

TCM allowed me to record Reds & Anatomy of a Murder & other old things this past week, so they can show Batman Begins @ 3 AM from here to eternity for all I care.

BTW, brace yourself - from the EW ad I saw, everyone's favorite cinematic meisterwerk AMERICAN BEAUTY will be flashing its rose-petaled cooch @ you sometime soon.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Hopefully they don't end up like AMC.
Full of commercials(most of them for themselves. wasting my time and their own money, there...) and showing newish shitty movies.
Both of them used to be very engrossed in being anachronistic, particularly TCM...

Moisture G Mess (The GZeus), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha - meant to type Batman RETURNS, tho some folks probably treat both w/ the same disdain.

Haven't they done this sort of Oscar marathon thing before? Some of you are making it sound like this little gimmick is signaling the End of Days.

As for AMC: I'm pretty sure they don't refer to themselves as American Movie Classics anymore, even though they show edited versions of Cobra and Under Siege II twenty times a week.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

They do the Oscar marathon every single year.

Allyzay heard you got beat up in a club. (Allyzay Eisenschefter), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Hooray for this thread, I was kind of weirded out at having found Men In Black II on TCM earlier this weekend.

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Sunday must be Marni Nixon day, because they're showing The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady back to back. Yay!

There is an oscar marathon every year, and every year it just highlights how Les and middle of the road most oscar movies are. The older ones aren't necessarily any better than tripe like Batman Returns.

BATMAN RETURNS IS FUCKING AWESOME FUCK ALL Y'ALL

a_p (a_p), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I like how they're using the Janet Gaynor A Star Is Born as part of the counterprogramming to the awards ceremony. The real deal could use more Fredric March-style drunkeness.

Meow!

The Many Faces of Gordon Jump (Leon), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Guys, are they showing Batman FOREVER or Batman RETURNS or both? There is a lot of confusion from the 1st post to the last and I think this needs to be cleared up. Because Batman FOREVER is a terrible movie!

Allyzay heard you got beat up in a club. (Allyzay Eisenschefter), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I meant Batman Forever! I just get the names mixed up. I should have just said "the one with fattie Val Kilmer".

The Many Faces of Gordon Jump (Leon), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Batman Forever is one of the worst movies I've ever sat thru. At least Batman & Robin had George Clooney and Uma Thurman to check out, Batman Forever had fucking Debi Mazar and Nicole Kidman and Val Kilmer and really I think whoever was the casting person for that movie needed to be killed.

Wait, though Jim Carrey was in it and I do have a completely irrational long-standing "thing" for Jim Carrey. Hmmm.

No, that movie still sucked.

I admit, I love Batman & Robin. It is almost up there with Can't Stop the Music in my pantheon of lovably awful movies.

They're showing Batman Forever (nom for best sound) It will be preceded by Three Smart Girls, That Touch of Mink and Ball of Fire.

Yeah, exactly.

Outcast Lemon Mode (sandglocks), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago) link

That is actually kind of an amazing movie line up.

Val Kilmer = hottest Batman ever (hello, THE LIPS)

and Carrey was a great gay Riddler. So the rest of it sucked, pishtosh.

Friday night they're showing The Greatest Show on Earth, which some claim is the worst Best Picture winner before Crash.

Thank U IMDB

Batman: Commissioner Gordon?
Dr. Chase Meridian: He's at home. I sent the signal.
Batman: What's wrong?
Dr. Chase Meridian: Last night, at the bank, I noticed something about Two-Face. His coin. It's his Achilles' heel. It can be exploited.
Batman: I know. You called me here for this? The Batsignal is not a beeper.
Dr. Chase Meridian: Well I wish I could say that my interest in you was... purely professional.
Batman: You trying to get under my cape, doctor?
Dr. Chase Meridian: A girl can't live by psychoses alone.
Batman: It's the car, right? Chicks love the car.
Dr. Chase Meridian: What is it about the wrong kind of man? In grade school it was guys with earrings. College, motorcycles, leather jackets. Now, *oh*, black rubber.
Batman: Try firemen, less to take off.
Dr. Chase Meridian: I don't mind the work. Pity I can't see behind the mask.
Batman: We all wear masks.
Dr. Chase Meridian: My life's an open book. You read?
Batman: I don't blend in at a family picnic.
Dr. Chase Meridian: Oh, we could give it a try. I'll bring the wine, you bring your scarred psyche.
Batman: Direct aren't you?
Dr. Chase Meridian: You like strong women. I've done my homework. Or do I need skin-tight vinyl and a whip?
Batman: I haven't had that much luck with women.
Dr. Chase Meridian: Maybe you just haven't met the right woman.

I actually like Nicole Kidman but she was so unwatchable in that movie.

I liked her until she turned into a Seuss character via plastic surgery.

Did To Die For get Oscar love?

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Holy useless trivia Batman!:

Alec Baldwin was almost cast as Batman.

Outcast Lemon Mode (sandglocks), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

(X-post)

She got a Golden Globe, but no Oscar nom. Which is a shame, cuz it's easily the best thing she has done or will ever do.

I understand I am in the minority here but I loved/loved her in Moulin Rouge, and think it among her finest hours.

If you wanna see AB go batty in the worst possible way, rent The Shadow.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:28 (seventeen years ago) link

You know, I just might. Even though I have heard how awful it was.

The Many Faces of Gordon Jump (Leon), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:29 (seventeen years ago) link

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Mocking anyone for a role like Kidman in BF is absurd -- THERE'S NO PART THERE.

(her best perf is Portrait of a Lady)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I love AMC mostly because one afternoon they featured Predator followed by Who's That Girl?

Classics indeed.

turd burglary (turd burglary), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

The Pinata is another movie AMC shows all of the time, I think it may very well be the worst movie ever made.

The Many Faces of Gordon Jump (Leon), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Turd, are you sure it wasn't Predator II? They have a lock on subpar sequels.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I have missed a beautiful thread here today, haven't I.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought they've been pretty good lately. I recently watched They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, This Sporting Life, and The Entertainer. A low point was Lovers and Other Strangers. The color scheme was awesome, but I kept waiting for the movie to either go somewhere or end, and after an hour and a half, it had done neither.

Matilda Wormwood (Mary ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 22:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Anatomy of a Murder is indeed wonderful. But then, if Predator II had a Duke Ellington soundtrack and cameo I'd probably be pretty forgiving.

i don't care what they have to show as long as they don't turn into bloody AMC - "alien vs predator" twice a day with ten commercial breaks!
