Very good, a triumph against consumerism. My dad is 61 though.

(not my picture)

I don't know how old they are, but they are not young. And they still sound fantastic.

do ppl still say "stereo"? i can remember when you could choose LPs in mono or stereo, there was a little round hole in the sleeve and you peeked in, and if it was red it was mono, and blue was stereo

btw, in answer to the thread question: cool.

I can't date these speakers online, but eBay does list them in the "vintage electronics" category. I'm thinking, mid-80's?

TS: old speakers vs. new speakers?

Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in it's funny bone (kenan), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

well my wharfedale speakers outlived my mac speakers by 25 years -- but they are bigger, with a nice sturdy wood surround

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

from eBay: "These speakers are in excellent condition like new . I am the original owner they have been only in my house. got married a few years ago and my wife says there too big."

My heart goes out to you, brother.

I have a gorgeous teak pair of Acoustic Research AR-4xs, with tweed grilles, bought new circa 1965 (not by me) for $130/pair. Their cones are rather flabby but I keep them as furniture. On the back is still glued a mail-in warranty card: "The bottom half should be torn along the perforated line and mailed to us. If the postal card section is missing you cannot be sure that you have a new unit."

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Can you replace cones? Don't they always wear/mush over time?

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

On the back it also says "No attempt should be made to open cabinet, as the acoustic seal would be disturbed."

I'm sure it could/should be done, but it's not a high priority. If only I'd taken the elective Loudspeaker Building/Repair class my high school offered!

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

well, the cone is a special thing with its own special qualities. There's probably no chance of finding exactly the same material to replace the cone with in a vintage speaker, and then the speaker wouldn't sound the same. So, lost cause.

I prefer paper. Something about the material itself seems to dampen and control resonance.

Slightly different cones vs mushy sound? Besides, you don't know what 2nd-hand speakers sounded like in the first place, right?

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, a speaker is a thing in total, more than the sum of its parts if it's well designed. You wouldn't want to put someone else's cone inside a speaker any more than you would want to substitute a different liquor in a cocktail recipe. (Sorry, first analogy that came to mind.)

My point being, laurel, that you're better off buying new speakers.

Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in it's funny bone (kenan), Saturday, 17 February 2007 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not buying new speakers, I don't even have any stereo components.
