At your local IHOP

Join IHOP to celebrate National Pancake Day (also known as Mardi Gras, or Shrove Tuesday) on Tuesday, February 20, 2007. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., we’ll give you one free short stack (three) of our famous buttermilk pancakes. All we ask is that you consider making a donation to support local children’s hospitals through Children’s Miracle Network, or other local charities.

I always find that American pancakes look too... cakey. Ours are much bigger and flatter:

is pancake day much of an American tradition? i remember having to explain it to a US-based friend a couple of years ago (though as I then had to explain Lent - in the context of 'no we cannot have pancakes next week' - maybe he was just being deliberately obtuse).

those things in the astronaut pic aren't pancakes, they're pikelets.

emsk ( emsk ), Saturday, 17 February 2007 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

ha, we had this whole pancakes v drop scones v crumpets v pikelets thing on old-ILX. It's very much a regional thing - one man's pikelet is another man's drop scone (is my pancake).

this answers my question on the shrove thread.

that's it dammit, this weekend I'm going to kerbey lane for some big ass gingerbread pancakes.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

They use the lame-ass flavored corn syrup, though!

kerby lane? why must you hurt me like that. :( Star Seeds gingerbreads aren't bad either.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Just do what I do - substitute molasses for sugar in your regular pancake recipe and add ginger, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the dry ingredients.

Presto, gingerbread pancakes.

Also, go to Central Market and get the bulk real maple syrup but use the labelmaker to price it as something much cheaper.

yay fraud!

haha, that is bad karma!

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Magnolia has real maple syrup, but you pay like $1.50 extra for it. Completely worth it.

I made pancakes today, huzzah. And as a non-religious type, I do it not because it is Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday or whatever, but because it is PANCAKE DAY, DAY OF THE PANCAKE, when we sing and dance and eat stuff with Jif Lemon on it. Oh yes.

We have a pancake thread. With photos. And no-one's made a "useless tosser" joke yet.

I just made pancakes. They were great. Real lemon juice too, none of yer Jif/Cif nonsense.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 00:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, I used real lemon juice too, but thanks to the wonders of advertising I can't help but associate: "don't forget the pancakes on Jif Lemon Day".

boo yes, i wanted to have this whole thing again and wanted to start a pancake FITE.

you has been missing out. lemon juice and sugar. NUM.

emsk ( emsk ), Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:14 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, I shall have a pancake fite with you.

Those things up there in the astronaut suit are pancakes. Pancakes you get on pancake day are pancakes on pancake day only because I never have them any other time of year so have no need for another name for them. They're a bit like crepes, I guess. Drop scones are also pancakes to me. I know all these words, yet somehow they all come out as pancake. But I always know what I'm talking about.

Sugar and lemon is the best pancake filling. Ice-cream and honey rum is pretty good too though.
