"Joe" and other culture war-type movies

I really want to see "Joe," a movie from the early 70s starring the dad from Everybody Loves Raymond. A construction worker and a businessman team up to kill hippies! There's a twist ending that was unfortunately revealed in one of the Amazon.com reviews!

Are there any other good "culture war" movies from this era (or later, I guess)? I've seen all the "Dirty Harry" movies, "Death Wish," and "Last House on the Left," but they're only secondarily about hippies/meatheads run amok. I need more meat!

Oh yeah, I did see "Wild in the Streets" years ago. I loved the last line -- "we're gonna put everyone over ten out of business!" I should rent it again though.

There's a bit of the take-on-the-hippies in Coogan's Bluff

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 February 2007 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

Putney Swope comin at it from the other end (pro-hippie, kinda)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 16 February 2007 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

That's fine, so is "Joe" from what I hear.

I've wanted to see Joe for years since I found the entry in Halliwell's Film Directory. I watched The Enforcer last week for the first time in ages. It fits the bill.

The War At Home and Hearts and Minds are both really good if you want docs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 February 2007 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

if you ever get the chance exploitation flick "The Helter Skelter Murders" is a great mix of hippy beach concert jam and eerie b/w "recreations" of the Tate murders. Made before the trial, even.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 February 2007 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

I saw a nice "evil hippies" episode of Ironside once. Tons of 70s cop shows must've done this, right?

Cop shows are STILL doing this. I wonder which ridiculous Law & Order: SVU episode will be this generation's punk Quincy?

Haha wasn't there an Inspektor Morse with EVIL RAVERS?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 February 2007 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was watching some of it the other day. The ravers weren't rilly evil tho, I think it was a sinister drugs company.

Blue Sunshine is possibly one of my favorite movies ever. Beautiful shots, awesome paranoia, crazy drugs and BALDIES! The soundtrack is also fucking awesome-- awesome scary, sometimes atonal bells and whatnot...and cheesy late 70s lounge music.

Also check out I Drink Your Blood. Satanic hippies move to small town, havoc ensues.

also, i guess, search out every biker movie from the 60's.

scott seward (121212), Saturday, 17 February 2007 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

I used to see "Over the Edge" all the time on HBO when I was a kid. Bunch of bored suburban kids doing dumb shit, parents getting, mad, etc. I haven't seen it in years but I'll always remember the kid putting on his giant 70's headphones and rocking out to Cheap Trick to drown out his parents.

FYI - Over The Edge is my favorite film of all time.

scott seward (121212), Saturday, 17 February 2007 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

If we're talking punks/goths instead of hippies then Suburbia comes to mind. I loved that film when I was a kid.

Taking Off (Milos Forman's first US movie) is kind of a Joe-lite.
Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring - A made for TV movie with Sally Field.
Bless the Beasts and the Children - Young misfits try to free some bison.
And of course Easy Rider.
