It was on Mundesley beach, in Norfolk, UK, looking very sorry for itself.

Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata)

oh, and "Steve"

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 2 September 2006 10:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually I think it was a lady...

http://www.omlet.co.uk/breeds/breeds.php?breed_type=Ducks&breed=Muscovy

"The females only make a short, weak quack and this is what makes them the quietest of all the ducks."

But thanks for that. What it was doing on Norfolk beach I don't know. Probably lost or escaped, in which case I fell a bit sad for it (her).

Ned Trifle, Saturday, 2 September 2006 10:20 (eighteen years ago) link

No wonder she was feeling sorry for herself, being called Steve like that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscovy_duck :

"Some have escaped into the wild and now breed outside the native domain, including in western Europe and the United States."

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 2 September 2006 10:22 (eighteen years ago) link

you could amend it to stevie since that little duck looks as if she was much too far out all her life, not waving but drowning.

I think it suits Colin better. To link to an image, do (img src="url") and make the brackets pointy.

Roast Dinner

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ IN THA HIZZOUSE, Saturday, 2 September 2006 11:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Good to know: according to Wikipedia, this duck is less noisy than roast beef.

"This breed is popular because it has stronger-tasting meat, like roast beef, and is less noisy."

Yes. This is Ned's second picture, after he turned off his flash.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 4 September 2006 10:07 (eighteen years ago) link

heh heh.

The red eyes are very distinctive though. I can't help but wonder what became of Stevie, probably I should have called the RSPB, it was not a happy duck.
