archer seems like the sort of show youd find really funnie although i guess the whole smirking sketch troupe absurdism contains too many lol cultural references or s.thing?

of the shows you list ive only seen 'american dad' and 'the oblongs' and they both totally sucked
― tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Saturday, 31 December 2011 07:49 (twelve years ago) link
Archer is offender number one of this new shitwave of "comedy" where there's literally three jokes
• "I have to drop a deuce" --wacky way of saying something dirty with no actual punchline• "What do you mean she's the black one? --acknowledging racisim exists = a joke• "yeah, in my dookchute maybe" [long blank stares signifying discomfort]--he TOTALLY WENT THERE and it was SO OUT OF CHARACTER

even though cross does like chipmunk movies for the scrilla, i gotta give him props for keeping it real in the comedy world while his old pal odenkirk lovingly bathes the balls of every sub-Tim&Eric LollegeHumor.com Nintendo Andy Kauffmann hackathon imaginable

ive only seen three episodes of archer but most of it seemed p rooted in like sketch comedy caricatures where they just keep exaggerating the characters worst quality for jokes? i mean i guess that ends up being the sorta OH I JUST WENT THERE stuff but like i think the characters are the jokes

that's a pretty good reading, (є(٥_ ٥)э), it really is like post-Family Dad JOKES TO THE EXTREME. it really makes these shows cold to me when like everyone acts like a NC-17 characature of a human and there's no straight ppl to bounce it off of. It's like if everyone on South Park was Cartman.

a season long simpsons arc that had none of the 4 family members (maggie is still aiight in my book) would be the best thing ever imo. (if it had decent writers, none of the people currently involved in the simpsons and didn't suck.) have smithers uncover shady dealings at the plant, try to get wiggum and quimby involved, some funny stuff involving lenny and carl, as it all comes to a head, burns suddenly has a heart attack/maggie shoots him, turns out disco stu was walter white all along etc.
― big popppa hoy, Saturday, 31 December 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link
btw - david cross has been in archer. and pretty much everything else (heard him on aqua teen hunger force the other night). i wouldn't exactly call him the model of comedy integrity.
― Mordy, Saturday, 31 December 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link
i dunno if there is anyone i'd call the model of comedy integrity. louie ck maybe, if you go for that sort of thing.

who cares if it's """prime time"""" a show either exists or it doesn't. cartoons generally aren't to begin w/ cause they're cartoons.

I do think that Adult Swim got oversaturated with extremely mediocre adult cartoons with retarded bizarre concepts over the last 5 years, but that's as obvious a point as saying 13 year old kids like pictures of boobs.

I was thinking about the 'what if ilx takes over the simpsons' concept upthread and I realized that it would prob just turn into an adult swim show

yeah but primetime cartoons on big networks have to aim for ~mainstreamer~ tastes which means they have to walk a thin line cause your mom has to like them too. overall it's prob easier to make a good cartoon show than ever.

JONAH HILL DONE IT AGAIN
Agree with poster way above, it'd be great to see utterly bizarre and experimental Simpsons. i feel like the characters and storylines are so well known that you don't even need jokes for weird narrative episodes to be funny. Good use of the existing capital.
Of course nothing like that would ever happen, unless whoever has control over the creative direction totally loses his/her mind.

yeah, that jumped to mind when i wrote that. I'd love to see, say, an episode where Milhouse falls in love with Bart and the entire thing is like some uber sentimental after-school special. No jokes, just really uncomfortable emotions and out-of-step seriousness. i'd find that funny, at least.

wtf was that
― judith, Saturday, 31 December 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link
i want to see an episode where Milhouse and Bart are wrestling, put each other in sleeper holds, and both pass out, and lie on the ground motionless for the next 18 minutes

whiney so otm re: archer
― Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 31 December 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link
yeah absolutely, IMO Archer is kinda in the same realm as stuff like Family Guy where the jokes come so fast and are spoken so confidently that you kind of feel like it just has to be funnier than it actually is
the only animation that really impressed me lately was some weird Adult Swim show called SuperJail (or something like that) that I caught while flipping through channels - I don't know if it was funny per se but the animation was really something
― ...or fold laundry? (J0n Arbuckle), Saturday, 31 December 2011 22:49 (twelve years ago) link
also that "bart the general" clip is really amazing, everyone should be watching this
like all that dumb "Dead Bart" creepypasta stuff was pretty annoying but it did strike me how cool it would be if they really did make an episode that was totally surreal and uncomfortable to watch. South Park kinda crossed this line with the "You're Getting Old" episode but I'd love it if they just once did something totally inexplicable
