Yo is there an effective way to call cab drivers out on shit like that?

Stevie :-D, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, but it's more than $5 worth of hassle.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

when that happens I usually pee on the floor

(for anyone familiar w/ Chicago who cares, a normal route from my house to work would be Clark to LaSalle, to one of various Loop streets, to Peoria + Jackson. this guy took LSD to lower Randolph, which Google maps says added 1.9 miles)

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:27 (twelve years ago) link

that seems weird but aside from asking him to state his intended route before you enter traffic, what are you going to do, argue about it? probably not.

league of women voters, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

you could just give him what you think is the right price and leave

nice catch cuauhtemoc blanco niño (dayo), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

Usually I don't think they're hustling. They're either totally unfamiliar w/ the streets (no "Knowledge" tests here) or they think it's the best route.

I have spoken up before the driver got huffy and sort of argued (yeh yeh it's the same, the same) and I compensated for the difference by not tipping.

Today I just didn't have the energy, and honestly, the route he took was faster, despite being 2 miles longer.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:40 (twelve years ago) link

cab drivers in beijing were pretty terrible - as soon as the cab started the driver would ask you what route you wanted to take, if you gave the wrong answer s/he would know you were not a local and would take you for a spin

nice catch cuauhtemoc blanco niño (dayo), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

my dad and the gutter guy have been arguing for nearly an hour now - I don't think this work is getting done

nice catch cuauhtemoc blanco niño (dayo), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:44 (twelve years ago) link

oh wait - he just took a new gutter off his trailer - we may have some action

You know what I hate? Is when the cabbie gets patronizing and starts explaining why his fucked up route is correct. One cabbie who was routing us around his asshole to get to his elbow relented and took my route, but then he turned super (passive-aggressively) servile at me. Blech.

I would bet dollars to Ding Dongs that this sort of cabsplaining is far more common for lone female passengers.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, but it's more than $5 worth of hassle.

OTM. I called to report a driver who ignored my requested route and went a totally fucked up way and when I got salty about it, yelled at me that it only added a few dollars to the fare. Asshole.

Anyway, you call 311 to register a complaint and then they send you paperwork to fill out and sign and by then I had cooled off and didn't care anymore.

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

That dude was easily the worst but as you (Jesse) know, my sense of direction is horrible so unless I am really familiar with a route, I'm pretty compliant w/ the driver's choice.

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

I do have unusually strong feelings about accessing LSD via Lower Wacker when coming from work, though.

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

Strong feelings for or against?

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

For. Mostly I hate the stop and go motion-sickness-factory that is LaSalle during rush hour so the sooner we're off, the better.

I wish there was a good way to complain about can drivers that ride the breaks. I guess I could just barf in their cabs.

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

Last taxi I got seemed to have rigged the meter. I noticed halfway home that it seemed to be going up faster than usual. The final price was about 1.5x the usual, and we'd gone a direct route with hardly any traffic.

I felt too timid to say anything when paying (it was a short trip so more of an annoyance than a big deal) but I have his numberplate in the "your car has arrived" text from the cab firm, so I should probably have reported him. Might still do, now this thread has reminded me.

brony island baby (case spudette), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

can't you get a quote from the cab company? altho they might always try to screw you $40 for materials

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link

heh that was a problem in china too. you'd get into a cab and there'd be wires hanging out of the meter and the interior would be stripped. xp

open question for people who have a different sandbox user name than their well-known user name on ILX and then force people to try to figure out the connection over the course of several weeks and refuse to confirm or deny the connection: why do you do this? it's not even a bad thing, i just can't understand.

Z S, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

not trying to call out anyone on this thread btw, mainly just thinking about nu-gabbneb

Z S, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

Hi!

illegal crew member (C.K. Dexter Holland), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

oh, see now i'm noticing that he posted on this thread earlier! anyway, again i'm not trying to criticize, i'm just wondering why

Z S, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

lol xpost

Z S, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

WHY!?!

Z S, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

I wondered this too.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

i think its to see how obvious it is who you are. i think i posted like three times before it was obvious.

judith, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

There are some people I know now, but it's still an extra step to go
curious orange = ENDBB = Er!c@

There are others whose ID forgot and I just gave up (e.g. nuhnuhnuh).

xp - no one was obvious to me even on real ILX. Well, a few exceptions, I guess. Most everyone else blended together.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:44 (twelve years ago) link

For the most part from coming here in 2004 until late 2010, I only distinguished the identities of people I had met IRL.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

I do not blend in. I am liek the lump in the oatmeal.

Aimless, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

well see this is part of the fun. i could probably have figured out who dealwithit.gif was from the name alone for eg. but i mean

judith, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

for the sandbox record, i will state that of those who are using different usernames and keeping it a mystery, i have no idea who 95%+ of you are, and have given up trying

Z S, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

i guess i fail at the game or whatever

Z S, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry to read about your grandfather, tehresa (and your mugging, Hoos). My grandmother similarly basically chose not to keep living, though she did in fact face an almost certainly fatal illness (but could have lived longer, perhaps more than most, albeit not in great comfort).

This may not be relevant, but I've noticed (in addition to all the December deaths - what's up with that?) a pattern where people die shortly after receiving an award or some other sort of affirmation. In wondering why, I've speculated that it may be that people just want to "go out on top," as it were, having capped a satisfying life in some significant fashion. Conversely, if someone is ill or simply very weak/tired, they may prefer death sooner rather than later, expecting things to get worse (there may be an interrelationship with depression here, for some). Perhaps it's simply (and understandably) about a desire to exercise a measure of agency over a process in which agency is ultimately taken from you.

No more relevant, perhaps, but the only time I've ever been mugged (on a populated high street in broad daylight) was after spending most of a month in the wilderness. I tend to think I had taken off my city "armor."

Aimless, you were one of the ones I knew.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

But we met. I think?

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

How long was the sandbox of our discontent back in 2005 (or was it 2006?)? I remember it lasting a whole summer, but I could be wrong.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

I have met no ilxors irl. The nearest approach to a meet-up came was when I attended a poetry reading by casuistry here in pdx, but he was so mobbed by well-wishers afterwards that I didn't wade through the crowd to introduce myself. I find it difficult to meet new people voluntarily. They might expect me to be not dull.

Aimless, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

I picked my new username bcz it was all the rage and I thought it was an obvious enough spoonerism, but I don't post that much on either ILX so I guess maybe people are seeing my name and (having never noticed my real-ILX persona) wondering if I might be someone they should know about. but anyway

hi, I'm (a passing) spacecadet

and I hope real-ILX comes back because I am pretty sick of this stupid username already

brony island baby (case spudette), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

i've noticed - and it took me a minute to figure out - which is about as much time as i feel like devoting to the issue at this point.

sarahel, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

Should be "a sassing (case spudette)," perhaps?

illegal crew member (C.K. Dexter Holland), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

I picked up on the spoonerism.

Aimless, I must have you mistaken with someone. But who? A former Chicagoan, that I know.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

oh, spacecadet, i did not realise who you were! mostly cos i thought yr sbox username was "casa spudette".

I know one ILX dude who respects boundaries by not posting here even though it kills him. (Hi!!! You rock, ILX dude! xoxo)

Jeff, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

Girls thread cont.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 23:12 (twelve years ago) link

Oops, not that one.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 23:12 (twelve years ago) link

Re girls only

This is getting messy.

Sandbox Jesse, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

It wasn't you specifically, although you (and Jeff) also deserve credit for your boundary respecting skillz.
