interview over

PHEW!

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

how'd it go pls analyse in great depth

twice banned gabbage is death (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

well, now i'm coming off the immediate post-interview high and i'm drifting toward second guessing. however, that's what i did after the first round interview and i ended up getting selected to move to this final stage, so whatever.

i will analyse in too much depth, but first, this thread is de-indexed, right?

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

i think so but

twice banned gabbage is death (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

immediate post-interview high thoughts: overall it went really well, i think! it was about 2 hours straight of interview action, and in all that time i think i only really flubbed one thing. and in addition to meeting with the leader of the team (which is in the mayor's office) i also was able to meet with the project leads for the two focus areas that i'd be working on, and also the director of policy for the city of fucking chicago. i wouldn't have had the chance to do that unless i was in town (the nightmare of last night now seems worth it), and the other 3 people they're interviewing for didn't get that opportunity. and i hit it off really well with the project leads, and even better with the director of policy, who mentioned that there are other jobs in the mayor's office that they're looking to fill, just in case i don't get selected for the job i'm applying for, and gave me his card.

- also as a side post-interview high note, while i was waiting to speak with the policy director and was talking to one of the project leads, there was this girl who is a BABE AND A HALF AT LEAST who kept making eye contact, smiling, found a way to interject herself into our conversation, and also i ran into her on the elevator later and uttered the most awkward "hello" of all time. good lord, yet another reason i want this job now.

drifting toward second guessing thoughts: the longer the interviews went, the better i got, and by the time i left the director of policy's office i felt like i could keep going on forever, comfortably. but unfortunately, i was at my worst with the first guy, who also happens to be the overall leader of the team and the guy who makes the hiring decision. he wasn't the most warm and friendly guy, and i don't think he thought my occasional little witty remarks were very witty or interesting.

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

xpost i think so, too

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

go get drunk & forget abt it

nakhchivan, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

another second guessing thought - they mentioned that all of the applicants were outstanding, and they were surprised by the quality, which is nice for me i guess but also made me immediately think of the other 3 applicants and imagine that they're like the twin rowing assholes in the Social Network.

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

go get drunk & forget abt it

this is a milestone i can get behind

ok, need to stop. deactivate.

/interview mode personality

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

more second guessing - there's an energy efficiency component to the job, and also a improving city services element, and it sounds like the emphasis is much more on the city services stuff. which is fine, but it's the energy efficiency stuff that really attracts me to the job.

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

That sounds overwhelmingly awesome!

OK dammit - I tried to post that comment three times now, and you keep adding more second guessing.

Sandbox Jesse, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

ffs STOP second guessing, ZS
go have fun in chicago, you did the best you could and that's all anyone can ever do ever

if i beat everyone there and have removed the coat)

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

Z_S, good luck. The interview is over now. You did everything you could do. Now do something to get your mind off it, cuz it is out of your hands for now.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

i feel like every time i open this thread there's someone talking abt moving to chicago. the new thing to do.

get drunk btw, chicago is awesome. worst case scenario here is you enjoyed a trip.

some xposts there cuz my internet connection is blah

arb ys, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

xpost one more thing to do: draft follow-up email to all 4 people, to send out later today. but yeah, that's easy enough, and i already feel 100x more relaxed than i have over the last 2 weeks.

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

h8 all that followup email stuff tbh

twice banned gabbage is death (p much resigned to deems), Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

or a grey shirt

i'm british now btw, hope that's alright

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

I wish it were 7 @ Delilah's now, too.

I will be the thick dude in brown cords who looks nothing like ZS.

Sandbox Jesse, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

Jenny and I were just talking about how we spell it "grey," which is correct American spelling, just not the dominant one.

Sandbox Jesse, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

h8 all that followup email stuff tbh

god, me too. and it's going to be especially difficult with the guy who is making the hiring decision, because he seemed somewhat disdainful of generic formal interview stuff (the greeting, smiling, making eye contact, orienting the answer to the "tell me about yourself" question so that you end up mentioning how awesome you are at life, etc

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

Congrats (and jealous), Z S. Were most of the people you met Chicagoans as far as you know? Rahm people?

C.K. Dexter Holland, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know what i'm going to be wearing at delilah's. most of my clothes are already vacationing in DC without me.

n/a, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

xpost all of them had some sort of connection to either chicago or to the obama administration, or to rahm himself.

Z S, Thursday, 22 December 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

btw i will be the skinny dude who looks like ZS

Not helpful. I see skinny dudes who look like ZS all the time.

jaymc, Thursday, 22 December 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

they all also mentioned something about "the order of the sacred beastly brotherhood" and had the same scar beneath their left ear lobe...

I never knew that the Twin Peaks theme had words. I love that music.

Sandbox Jesse, Thursday, 22 December 2011 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

I've been refreshing this page like mad to announce that I was mistaken - I DID know that it had words b/c I remembered the episode where what's her face sang it.

Sandbox Jesse, Thursday, 22 December 2011 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

I will be the fat woman in the blue dress with the amazing hair.

Also:

who mentioned that there are other jobs in the mayor's office that they're looking to fill, just in case i don't get selected for the job i'm applying for, and gave me his card.

This is fucking golden (as we like to say in local government around here).

Last day of work that I stupidly volunteered to come in for even tho its only skeleton staff
Why did I do this? I have nothing to do :/
At least in here there is aircon, whereas its 30deg outside so at home I'd be boiling like a Zoidberg, I suppose
Will go home early anyway as I have to finish a load of xmas food shopping which uuuugh.

Leave town with an orange, and pretend you're laughing at it. (Trayce), Thursday, 22 December 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

rrrobyn, Friday, 23 December 2011 03:58 (twelve years ago) link

Fuck. First time in years I was going to be all ready to fly home for vacation time plus 2 solid weeks of meetings, and I'm not ready, and I have to go into work tomorrow when I had the day off, and I have to pack tomorrow morning when I was going to pack tonight, and be ready to get in the SuperShuttle by 2.44pm, I am dreading work meetings in January anyway because I messed up at work in a non-fatal but very noticeable way by not spending enough money (arguably not my fault as no-one wanted to spend any with me, but won't be seen that way).

Want to be fappin' in Chicago.

ljubljana, Friday, 23 December 2011 04:00 (twelve years ago) link

Wait, your job requires you to...spend more money...with other people? I am confuse. :(

OH GNUS (Pyth), Friday, 23 December 2011 04:04 (twelve years ago) link

I'm trying not to be too specific about my job here, but I have a small budget to spend on getting people together to work on research ideas. I can't spend it unless I can persuade a bunch of people I work with back in the UK that the time is right. They only want to bring people together to work on research ideas if there's going to be a route to funding afterwards, and right now they are being very, very slow about agreeing those routes to funding. I have tons of ideas and many of them will come off next year, but I needed to get the money out of the door by March 31 and that's not going to happen. I should have started spending it on second-class ideas for events earlier in the year rather than holding out for the ones I wanted to come off.
