wii play is kinda disappointing in that I seem unable to play billiards sitting down. But racing cows and shooting stuff is good fun.

buns of steel magnolias (m bison), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

the w11 1 (s3cr3t r1ngus). it's sort of striking in a way.

striking, you say?

they be stealin' kingfish's bucket (kingfish), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:16 (seventeen years ago) link

(in the degree to which it doesn't work on a very basic level, i meant)

sir lord baltimore club music (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

haha Matt I suspect googlers looking for baltimore club music might be just as bad as people looking for prerelease tidbits on boric teh medgehog, but work-rel so I get it.

the DS one was pretty bad, in terms of the difficulty curve. is this one like that, just flat-out completely unchallenging until you run up against something that feels almost impossible, then back to nothing?

TOMB07 (trm), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

why doesn't the wii version work? that's disappointing to hear

coz larry (bundgee), Friday, 16 February 2007 21:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Prob cos it's a pain in the ass spinning your wrist that quickly...

kv_nol (kv_nol), Friday, 16 February 2007 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

you steer s0n1c like a car, kind of. (like excit3truck w/a hedgeh0g) then jump by flicking the wiimote, he runs automatically...it's just...really bad...

i keep wondering why they make new games for him, then i see the sales numbers and am flabbergasted by how much they still sell, esp. compared to awesome stuff like okam1 or psych0nauts that are great and do zilch : (

sir lord baltimore club music (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 February 2007 22:12 (seventeen years ago) link

(also t0m i'm probably being silly, but one can't be too careful...that's why i hardly ever post in ILG to begiin with)

sir lord baltimore club music (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 16 February 2007 22:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Sega is trying to pull some kind of "The Producers"-style insurance scam by making their games as bad as possible.

i'm quite puzzled by Dice & Domino! who woke up in 2007 and said "we need to have a tag team that looks and acts just like ANDREW DICE CLAY!"

do you not like the gameplay concept or the execution? the concept seems fine to me, but i haven't played the game.

Sonic has become his own childrens' animated movie that comes out every summer and produces a top-selling AAA title on nothing more than brand recognition, and then sucks ass.

cousin larry I'd say based on the last few additions to the franchise any animal with spiky hair from Sega should be steered well clear of, unless you like throwing money away and hating yourself

Elebits is totally fun, y'all.

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 February 2007 06:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Hai! I'm sure this has been discussed on ILG before, hell, might have been discussed on this very thread for all I know since I didn't read all of it, but...say you're fiteing a really hard boss, and he keeps kicking your ass over and over again, and you realise that it's gonna take many more tries to beat him, so you turn off the console and chill for a sec...what're some good come-down remedies for that? Cuz I'm in this sort of situation and every time I switch off the console I feel not only frustrated but totally WIRED for like an hour, it's no fun at all :(

TOMB07 (trm), Sunday, 18 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

You mistake is in turning off the console. You're supposed to just keep trying and trying with no breaks at all. An effective technique is to deny yourself basic amenities such as food and water, and bathroom breaks, until you manage to get past the tough part.

Zachary Scott (Zachary S), Sunday, 18 February 2007 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

And if that doesn't work, pause game and go to sleep. When you awake, you'll be able to magically beat the game in one go.
That's how I finished Shadow of the Colossus and ffx-ffxii

I finally got a Nintendo DS. And a buttload of games. My 5-second synopses after playing them for, like, under an hour each:

Trauma Center: So far this is amazing. I can see it getting boring super fast, though.
Brain Age: WTF? This is awesome. I definitely DON'T use my brain ever, because after playing this for like 30 minutes I started to get a bit manic. It was like drugs for my BRAIN, MAN.
Big Brain Academy: Eh, didn't like it as much as Age.
the first castlevania: actually only looked at the intro screen.
Cooking Mama: yet to even put it in the machine.
New super Mario Bros: You know, I'll say it... not blown away. My friend puts it as his fave SMB game of all time... and Yoshi's Island second. I think they both rank at (or near) the bottom of my list. SMB3 first, SMW1 second, SMBLL third, SMB2, SMB1, Yoshi, this game. But I'm only on world 2, so what do I know.

Will M. (Will M.), Monday, 19 February 2007 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I still need to get the Castlevania DS games.

And the Fire Emblem ones, too, just for good measure.

There are Fire Emblem DS games?! OMG want to play.

Will M. (Will M.), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

nah, these are just the GBA titles

they be stealin' kingfish's bucket (kingfish), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I rented three Wii games this weekend, one of them sucked completely (Metal Slug Anthology - why was this released for Wii, again?), and one of them was identical to the DS version (Trauma Center: Second Opinion) I stopped playing it because I hate being insulted by manga characters.

The other one was Zelda, and it completely rules.

Jay (jaymacke), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and Wii Play is precisely the waste that all of the pre-release reviews and other region folks claimed. Get it if you need the controller, because it takes about three hours to complete every single minigame at the highest level.

Jay (jaymacke), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I finally put 'em on the glass ceiling re: WoW - after one month+ of rampant nonstop glee, I can't stand to play more than twice a week, if that, & only for an hour or two @ a time (unless doing an instance w/ pals). Grinding solo is some bullshit.

EXCITE TRUCK MADE ME SPASTIC WOOOOOHOOOOO XXXXTREEEEME

Seriously, it's pretty fun.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Raving Rabbids is like living a nightmare. It's fun to watch someone else stress out over it though. "Gangsta" Rayman is black!

Elebits, as noted above, is awesome; ransacking a house looking for little parasites and zapping them with your ghostbuster gun is more fun than I could've predicted.

My guy's score is at 2048 on tennis. I assumed it stopped at 2000, but that's not the case; you just keep going over the top of the chart. The game doesn't get harder though; you just keep playing one 1900 player and one 2000 player. Twitch reflexes and intuitive controls have me at a point where I'm consistently beating the computer in straight sets. When do I get to play real people online; that's the million dollar question?

Anybody know anything about realtime one-on-one wifi games for the wii? C'mon, they can do it with the DS; what's the hold up?

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I got stuck at something really early in Raving Rabbids, got completely fed up, and haven't played it since.

Excite Truck is pretty fun.

forks: the first one will be pokemon, but that requires friend codes. i am assuming a whole bunch will be out after that.

Webber (Webber), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Excitetruck, from what little i've played of it, strikes me as a quintessential "Dudes, check this out!" title, to be demonstrated to a group of folks as drunk as possible.

they be stealin' kingfish's bucket (kingfish), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:54 (seventeen years ago) link

And this is a bad thing because?

Anything that gets my friends to understand why I enjoy spending a couple of hours a weekend geeking out is fine by me!

OH MAN AMIGA. Play... what was it called. Sword of Twilight? Also: Rodland. Also: Pandora (I had it in a 4-pack with an Arkanoid clone if that help). Also: Warlords.

Will M. (Will M.), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

There was also a turn-based strategy with Marines in it called Breach 2, I think. And also, Star Command was great. I think you needed the manual for both, though...

Will M. (Will M.), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago) link

2.5 hours on Grid Wars last night, finishing at about 1am (why?). was determined to keep playing until i got on the highscore table but that's increasingly difficult. didn't manage it (currently need 600,000 plus on hard)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

cosign on the new Zelda being totally fucking awesome. it's as cinematic as any game I've ever played or seen. The twilight bits are totally cosmic/haunting, plus so far all the boss monsters are completely terrifying, which makes up for their total piece-of-cake nature combat-wise. Love the SM64 Bowser flashback with the Death Mountain miniboss.

things I hate so far, a list: motherfucking lava, portal monsters who won't cooperate and keep wandering around out of B-button death range, portal monsters I have to fight in human form, most of the little kids from my village, Midna giving me useless/redundant advice in dungeons.

TOMB07 (trm), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I know I've joined in with too many "Name great Amiga games" lists, normally when you mention the Amiga, I think, Ste. But one I always forget to mention is 'Walker'. Which is still a great game.

As for Zelda, yeah, I hate the portal Monsters, but I've become a pretty big fan of riding round Hyrule Field as fast as Epona will go doing drive-bys (With my sword) on the baddies that wander about down there.

I still haven't made as big a dent in Zelda as I feel I should have, just haven't had a chance to dedicate a whole day to it like I really should. Maybe this weekend. maybe.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig G), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:24 (seventeen years ago) link

oh man ride-by slapping trolls upside the head is hilarious. I also like locking on with the boomerang whenever one of those bird fuckers comes in on my six and then letting them eat my dust while they float around stunned.

TOMB07 (trm), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Same here - I'm only just catching my stride thirteen hours into the damn thing! (I do have to applaud the designers for building in a pretty brilliant degree of compartmentalization - as someone who rarely has the patience for gigantic sprawling games, it's a huge boost for the game to be structured by goals which can be accomplished in an hour or so, like "find the tears" or "get into the castle" or whatever. Maybe this has been an element of Zelda forever and it's just new to me since TP is the first Zelda I've ever owned and therefore had the time to obsess over; I 'unno.)

I am still playing Circle of the Moon. I spent too long trying to get specific item drops from certain monsters.
