Does anyone know who the two sarariman-types are in the american Wii tv adverts?

are they anybody in particular(e.g. certain Nintendo execs), or just randomly cast japanese guys?

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Friday, 29 December 2006 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I really need to finish Zelda soon. The Wii games are piling up. I haven't even played Sports yet.

shakey mo jopotatoes (bundgee), Friday, 29 December 2006 22:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Wii 10-pin bowling is the best.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 29 December 2006 23:03 (seventeen years ago) link

meanwhile, local Wiis are going for only about a 50-75% markup

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Saturday, 30 December 2006 00:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I had no trouble buying one from a store, what the hell are people doing!

i just got a wavebird real cheap, any recommendations for gamecube games i can play on wii when the inevitable game shortages come?

zappi (zappi), Saturday, 30 December 2006 01:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Twilight Princess :D

Nah, def. Killer7, Eternal Darkness, Anything Resident Evil but esp. RE4, Wind Waker, Ikaruga, Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario...there's a FF game (Crystal Chronicles) but it's the twee-est damn thing ever.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 30 December 2006 01:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I had to restrain myself physically to keep from going back to the CD Exchange place to pick up New Super Mario for $20

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Saturday, 30 December 2006 01:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Twilight Princess :D indeed btw! Altho I havent played it, just watched someone play it (and I have missed big chunks, as I'm not amenable to sitting there for 14 hrs straight watching Nick). But it looks fantastic, and has some srsly brain-snapping "what acid were they smoking" bits in.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 30 December 2006 01:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I was saying he should play the GC version, even if he's done the Wii one. Everything is mirrored and you get trad. Zelda controls.

New SMB is pretty cool. I haven't played much of my DS platformers (New SMB, Sonic Rush, Yoshi's Island) yet. I'm mostly still trying to finish FFIII but I'm also screwing around with Nintendogs, Phoenix Wright and Rocket Slime. I finished Trace Memory, a DS graphic adventure that only takes about 5 1/2 hours. There's another game from the same developer coming out next month called Hotel Dusk.

BTW, I have FFIV and FFV for GBA now and as far as I can tell they're just like the PS1 ports, i.e. FFIV has the restored scenes and more accurate translation. I'll have to see if "you spoony bard!" is still in there.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 30 December 2006 01:54 (seventeen years ago) link

ugh, i tried finishing FFIII and getting to the final boss takes too long - i know they tried to keep it as close to the original as possible, but one & a half hours plus without save points on a handheld is just stupidity.
still on third temple in TP - i'm avoiding all online guides and thus feeling v. thick at times! the payoff is worth it though (so far)

zappi (zappi), Saturday, 30 December 2006 02:07 (seventeen years ago) link

The third temple is the biggest pain in the ass by far. It's pretty easy going after that.
I didn't look at any guides until I was done and only for the Golden Bug collecting stuff. I just don't have the patience for that needle in a haystack bullshit.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 30 December 2006 02:13 (seventeen years ago) link

The bug/fish catching is very Animal Crossing!

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 30 December 2006 02:31 (seventeen years ago) link

This is kinda neat. The fan team that's trying to restore the ending to KOTOR 2 put up a nice little trailer of their work so far.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Saturday, 30 December 2006 11:24 (seventeen years ago) link

i got that nintendo dogs game (for the nintendo ds). it's so darn cute.

nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 30 December 2006 11:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Which one did you get? I got the chihuahua one but my puppies are the German Shepherd and the Yorkie. Chihuahua's are quite pricy it seems.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Saturday, 30 December 2006 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

xxpost I got the toy poodle and named him Zoetje (Sweetie). Didn't realize he was a.... well, not a bitch so now he's stuck with a girlie name.

xpost yeah tennis is great (tho i'm already losing a little interest in the wii, i'm not really a gamer) but i am VERY keen to check out/purchase the zelda game.

nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 30 December 2006 22:49 (seventeen years ago) link

japanese trailer for Hotel Dusk. Looks kinda neat. A whodunit with an animation style from that A-Ha video.

!!!! oh man, how's this for a holiday surprise?

Ever wonder how Santa Claus manages to work his way down chimneys way too small for him? Or how he seems to stop time in order to visit all of the world's good boys and girls every Christmas morning? LucasArts and TT Games know the answer: Santa Claus is a Jedi Knight whose amazing Force powers allow him to pull off such spectacular feats. A long time ago, he came to us from a galaxy far, far away to exile himself from the Jedi purge led by Darth Vader. (No... that's not official canon.)

But what would have happened if jolly ol' Saint Nick had stuck around to assist the Rebellion? Find out by creating him in LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. Here's how:

Step 1: At the Mos Eisley Cantina, enter the following two codes:

CL4U5H (for Santa hat and red clothes)

TYH319 (for white beard Extra)

Step 2: Go to the Character Customizer and create the proper costume. Use a human head, the appropriate red clothing...and don't forget the red cap! Santa can wield the weapon of your choice -- we recommend the green or red lightsaber to seasonally complement his shiny red duds. (Remember, the color of his lightsaber decides whether his Force powers are naughty or nice.)

Step 3: In the Extras menu, activate Disguise 3. Now have her open the box.

Step 4: Enter the character-based level of your choice in Free Play.

Step 5: Spread holiday cheer to a galaxy in pieces.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

altho, that code might just be for the DS version of the game. I haven't checked it yet.

japanese trailer for Hotel Dusk. Looks kinda neat. A whodunit with an animation style from that A-Ha video.

Yeah, Hotel Dusk is by Cing, the guys that did Trace Memory which I just finished the other day. I'll be buying.

also neat: promo/gameplay vid of the first Metroid Wii game.

Note that Spicolly 2K7 gets his wii on.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I bought myself some k-rad games for the xmas:

• Dragon Quest VIII which I have been playing for about 60 hours straight.
• Harvest Moon: Magical melody...haven't played yet but it better be a lot better than A Wonderful Life
• Jeopardy 2 for the PSone! Yay! My favorite party game and it was only $5. The computer player kept kicking me & the boys' asses tho. It can buzz in way too fast. Unfair.

Abbott (Abbott), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

If any of you are near a Toys R Us, go hit them up for Metroid Pinball. It's only $10, it's a great game, and it comes with the DS rumble-pak, which is usually $10 on its own.

Also picked up Trace Memory for $15 from the local CD Exchange place. I love those places.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Sunday, 31 December 2006 23:36 (seventeen years ago) link

big ass sale at Toys R Us:

OK I think I saw a grand total of three Call of Duty 3 references. Anyone else playing it (360 version)? I just realized the other day that with a little waiting the ranked games will work, and holy shit people are TOO GOOD at this game! I've barely touched the campaign version of the game because the multiplayer is too much fun.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Haven't tried it yet. Waiting for PC version to be released.

COD2 was bleah compared to the expansion for COD1. Not sure if COD3 is actually any good yet.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I must say, the learning curve is steeper for #3 than for the previous edition - gunsights much smaller, no killcam, less ammo, etc. Dunno about these vs. #1 or if there were any differences with the PC versions, I never played them.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:32 (seventeen years ago) link

think so? after not playing COD3 for months and forgetting the controls, I just hopped online last night. in my second match I had 43 kills. after playing Gears of War since release, COD3 seems like a piece of cake.

hm (modestmickey), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, I played 3 first (before GoW) and thought it was way fucking hard. Now it's better, but it's still harder than 2. Plus I never played the ranked matches until this past week 'cause they took too long to load.

Gears of War I got into way too late and I don't think there's any real hope for me. Co-op is good and I like it overall, but the masses are just too far ahead of me online to hold my interest. That and no jumping, which really pisses me off.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 04:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, one of you wants to sell me a copy of each GBA/DS Castlevania game

I'm hesitating about buying a Wii because I don't think (read: amn't sure at all!) that it will ever really have the games. Am I alone in this worry or has someone heard something that I haven't? I mean it looks like great fun but is that enough? I don't want to spend that much on a post-pub gimmick!

kv_nol (kv_nol), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 09:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Metroid. Super Mario. Zelda. Good enough for me.

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 09:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think (read: amn't sure at all!) that it will ever really have the games.

The 360 has been out for over a year and has one RPG, four thousand racing simulations and online UNO.

the PS3 has a WW2 shooter, plus they put aliens in it, to make it different. They also have, uh, a racing simulator, which looks better on the 360. And they have a giant robot combat simulator with the Gundam name attached that everybody in Japan HATED. I don't even know how you fuck that up.

the Wii already has golf, bowling, swordfights, werewolves, tennis, and fucking Madden, plus the VC:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_titles_%28Europe%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_titles_%28North_America%29

So what are you worried about, again? (sorry to fanboy it up)

TOMB07 (trm), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

(also big points to XBLA for getting a remake of old 2D WORMS for network play. That's almost worth $400 to me.)

TOMB07 (trm), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

(but not worth having that big fuckoff ugly beast of a machine in my living room)

TOMB07 (trm), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

That fucking Madden minigame is a really poor direction for the series if you ask me.

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, good one.

drop everything, Super Robot Wars for the DS is out in March.

TOMB07 (trm), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 15:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Don't forget to mention Disaster: Day of Crisis, which looks like being a pretty great game.

I have to agree that I'm feeling a little nervous about the Wii lineup at the moment, though there are plenty of things on the unspecified horizon, such as fully-featured golf games, and tennis of course which I hope will expand nicely on Wii Sports.

There's also the Nintendo big names, which have already been mentioned like Mario, Metroid etc. Mostly though, there's just more on the Wii and coming soon to the Wii that I'm even remotely interested in compared to the other two options.

I was stupid enough to fall for the grass-is-greener thing with respect to my DS and bought a PSP only to realise that I don't like Burnout, Ridge Racer, Tekken and all the other guff. I spend my (limited) psp time playing Lemmings, which I probably can get for my PC from an aband0nware site, and Killzone, the only actually 'good' game I've played so far. Deep down, I know my experiences would be exactly the same on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig G), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago) link

What are all the robots listed for that SRW game? I only recognize Lion Voltron, one of the Mazingas, and Gundam.

kingfish in absentia (kingfish), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:24 (seventeen years ago) link

spent christmas avoiding having to watch darts on the tv (dad has the worst taste) by playing gridwars (mentioned above). oddly i suck at medium hardness but have all 10 high scores on hard. (i think medium takes too long, all the scores there have times in the 10s of minutes and i typically last about 8 or 9. hard is more fun anyway).

i do love the way you get into the zone and it goes zen and you can just glide around without thinking, killing everything in your path. have also noticed that immediately after a high scoring game i tend to have a really low scoring game.

also got ico from my brother. am stuck in 2nd room. oh um.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:50 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, look, i played a wii at thanksgiving and it was ok but JUST ok. i can imagine all that remote swinging would make you long for buttons real quick.

sunny successor (katarina), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, buttons, so you can shoot aliens in 1080p during simulated world war 2, for the low low price of $750
