moment at which you accidentally jog the computer, repositioning it to reveal that you have blocked sunlight from your apartment with a mattress. "oh that? sure yeah i just LIKE TO KEEP THE NOISE OUT"

you'll be fine!, the idea of a skype interview blows my mind but i can think of notable advantages, eg you do not have to wear trousers

Never translate German (schlump), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:10 (twelve years ago) link

haha, this is my first one (and hopefully last - i'd prefer in person, and if i make it through this first round the final interview will be in person in either Chicago or Brooklyn), so yeah it's gonna be a little weird! i am, however going to wear nice pants and shoes and the rest, just to get myself into the full work mindset as much as i can.

There's no 'fuck cancer' thread on sandbox but ms mac's dad just got an all-clear after two years and i wanted to say

Sad Banter (p much resigned to deems), Friday, 2 December 2011 14:19 (twelve years ago) link

I've been overwhelmingly sad and anxious lately and it's been tough. I'm concentrating on the little things like today being Friday and the fact that I'm getting a massage tomorrow morning. I did something to my back/neck a week ago - over a week ago - and have been in agony ever since so tomorrow morning can't come soon enough imo.

xp Also, you may have to get up for some reason during the interview, or they may make up some reason for you to get up so that they will know that you are "detail-oriented" and all that rot.

whatever kind of construction is going on over there, it apparently involves a big vehicle that is always moving backward

The Caterpillar engineer who invented that sound died about a year ago. (No, I don't know why I know that, either.)

i am having evil thoughts about the sounds of his funeral, and also the way he died

i always feel like there's this mutual awareness of the performative, pantomime element that is going on, something that could at any moment be ruptured by you breaking the fourth wall & saying CMON YOU KNOW I JUST WANT THIS, I ACTUALLY REALLY JUST WANT THIS JOB + COULD DO IT TOTALLY

Never translate German (schlump), Friday, 2 December 2011 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

you try to imbue your answers with that subtext like it's pictionary or something but it's incredibly frustrating to have to tip-toe around the kind of useful/sentimental/enthusiastic declarations that might actually offer some insight into yr reasoning

Never translate German (schlump), Friday, 2 December 2011 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

Oh your interview. Right.

I thought you were dissing someone here for a second!

Ou est la showaddywaddy (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Friday, 2 December 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

co-sign with everything schlump said.

i think it went well! i did about as well as i can imagine doing, although a few of my answers were a little too long. but even if i don't make it to the final round, i'm not going to be kicking myself for not preparing well enough.

rrrobyn, Friday, 2 December 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

I meant "pants" in the British sense.

Sandbox Jesse, Friday, 2 December 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

I can barely make rent, but I really want to buy tickets to the live John Waters Christmas show next weekend. Is this a dumb use of money, or will I be forever happy for seeing JW live.

feel like playing with those effects some webcam software offers would have been a winning skype-interview strategy, like they ask you about whether you're technologically literate & suddenly your head is on the body of a fish in a fishbowl

Never translate German (schlump), Friday, 2 December 2011 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

this is not the job pro-tips page, and i don't feel like creating a new one just for sandbox, so ww77d:

- i would like to send a thank you note to the interviewer. in fact, important interview guides printed out and laying out nearby reported say "Sending a thank you note is not an option; it is a necessity"
- "email is the standard form for sending a thank you note; always email your thank you note within 24 hours of the interview."
- cool. i can do this. *winky fingerpoint*
- BUT
- my interviewer never directly wrote to me, so she never gave me her email address. instead, a generic email address set up for this round of interviews has been used to correspond with me and the rest of the candidates
- BUT
- of course, it's the internet, and i found the interviewer's normal email address in about 7 seconds FLAT. 7 seconds FLAT, people
-BUTT

- i'm probably overthinking this, but should i write to the personal email address and risk looking like a creepy internet researcher?

Z S, Friday, 2 December 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

i would probably use the generic address but put an FAO in the subject line

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Friday, 2 December 2011 23:07 (twelve years ago) link

hmm, that sounds like a good idea, thanks!

Z S, Friday, 2 December 2011 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

Never translate German (schlump), Friday, 2 December 2011 23:39 (twelve years ago) link

the only way you should be playing w/any FAO bullshit is if you're spraying something on the side of her house, which i guess now i mention it is maybe an option?, show you're keen &c
