I just had a whack at Wii golf. Kinda fun! We've set it up in the office with a projector screen on the wall. I do like the intuitive feedback of the controller: it both vibrates and makes noises that totally tell your brain "you just hit a golf ball" or whatever. Quite suprised, I thought it'd feel a bit dinkyshit.

And yes, I get away with playing Nintendos at my work it would appear. Aw yeah.

(Mind you, my bf actively HAS to play games all day long, part of his job, bastardface. etc etc)

Nabisco, that reminds me of my approximately 8-hour stint with Runescape. I spent a few hours going through the tutorial, then I spent about 4 hours reading a bunch of tips and studying maps online, getting my strategy ready. Then, about 20 minutes into the game, somebody walked up to me and said "How old are you?", and I said "23", and he said "LOL I'm 12"

I play Tribal Wars at work and the amount of crap on the forums or I get by email. LOL? Fuck you! SPEAK ADULT grrrrrrr!

I have decided to buy myself a Wii because I was told to. Ah, l'amour etc.

kv_nol (kv_nol), Thursday, 14 December 2006 09:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm sure I told this story on real ilx but whatever:

My dad plays WoW. He & some members of his guild were beginning to suspect that one of their members was but a kid. Their suspicions were confirmed when, as a raid went sour, on the chat channel, full of "fuck!"s and "god damnit!"s, that particular guild-member swore "TARTAR SAUCE!"*.

*note: "tartar sauce" is used as a swear word on Spongebob Squarepants (other Spongebob swears include: "fish paste!", "barnacles!", "dirty barnacles!")

1. Military Madness will be coming out for the Wii VC.

2. Best Buy is releasing held-back Wii shipments this weekend, rumors are 40 units+ per store that they've been shoring up to boost sales.

haha. i just envision a legion of nerds converging on the stores like violent, junk-sick addicts, beating up store managers for holding out on them.

Update: These Tactics Arena children are little bastards. Now that I'm getting better, they all seem to avoid actually losing or surrendering by disconnecting from the server instead. Or else as soon as you kill one character they like, they just end the damn game. MAYBE I'M OLD-FASHIONED, kids, but where I come from, you start losing a game, you have the damned dignity to play it out a little, maybe learn a thing or two, and give the other guy the fully earned satisfaction of kicking your weaselly little 12-year-old ass.

New conversational highlights:

THEM: my other account has like 1200 xp
ME: My other car is a Ferrari.
THEM: yea right what year and model
ME: It's an 1824 special edition.
ME: From before cars were even INVENTED.
THEM: well if yr driving it then it must be a piece of crap
THEM: if it was worth nething u'd keep it in a glass case
ME: I have four others in a glass case.
THEM: i drive a honda

Someone needs to give these kids a sitcom.

Donkey Kong New York (Lee), Thursday, 14 December 2006 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

hah nabisco, you have discovered the first law of playing games on the internet

your opponent is an insufferable, spoiled 13-year-old. everything else follows from this:

1. your opponent will disconnect to avoid "actually" losing.
1a. the chances of this are roughly tripled if there is any kind of win/loss record-keeping or ranking system.
2. your opponent will accuse you of using "cheap" tactics. for a short while you will attempt to reason with them and fail 100% of the time.

etc

v (sleep), Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, one last, including the thing I'm most embarrassed about:

THEM: how old r u
ME: 29
THEM: omg old
ME: How old are YOU?
THEM: i'm almost 18, 17 now but i'll be 18 in a month
ME: I'm not your Congressman, dude, chill out.
THEM: ???

Nabisco's tales are exactly why I don't have any interest in online multiplayer gaming. I would rather play my friends or just play alone than engage in any way in a discussion with the hordes of little shits who live there. If that makes me elitist or aloof, then fuck it.

Yahoo games is full of people who disconnect rather than lose. There's a "force forfeit" option where you can declare yourself the winner after 3 minutes of inactivity/sodding off, and it won't let you close the window without forfeiting, but lots of people will go to the trouble of pressing ctrl alt delete and make you wait three minutes out of spite. A few times, before Yahoo thankfully changed things to stop stuff like this happening, I was in canasta games where people were viewing their ratings every 30 seconds to appear active to the server whilst refusing to play and lose a few points on their ratings.

In Runescape I always have the chat turned off, it's much better.

while i'm going down memory lane: a game i loved on my family's first computer, a 386. MINES OF TITAN.

http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=729

the reason being, there was one town in it that was supposed to be more vanilla and peaceful, so the random encounters were more civilian. but there was always a chance that any encounter would turn violent right away, no matter how advanced you were. so you would have to, at some point, fight off a family or group of unarmed bums that jumped you.

are there any DS/GBA games with actually good narratives? or are they all merely of the generic japanese "don't worry about a coherent plot" quality?

YAY! After numerous calls and visits to shops I found a Wii. I couldn't wait till christmas to give it (to my husband, not Ophelia). But of course I realized soon I should have gotten an extra remote. Tonight we will PLAY TENNIS.

Kingfish, you're after Phoenix Wright! Sure, it's more like a book with questions at the end of each chapter than a game, but it sure is brilliant.

Congrats Nathalie :) Did you get Zelda?

So how does that Wii friends thing work? Do you guys do it? Apparently you have to go online and can make friends or something? I AM METALMUZAK

nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 15 December 2006 13:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I've no idea. I think you have to do it online, and get a friend code (like on the DS), but I don't know anyone else with a Wii...

Finished The Warriors missions last night. Great atmosphere in the game if it all seemed a little easy!

kv_nol (kv_nol), Friday, 15 December 2006 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

UPDATE: I owe an apology to the users of Tactics Arena. Last night I met nothing but kind, lovely people, including one guy who purposefully walked his last character into a trap (so I wouldn't have to waste time coming to finish him), and a nice guy from the Phillipines who told me "Koreans are like Starcraft gods here" and whose non-idiomatic English provided the most touching online chat ever:

HIM: how old are you?
ME: 29
HIM: you're like an older brother to me

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 15 December 2006 17:43 (seventeen years ago) link

well there you go, stay up late enough so you aren't dealing with people from North America, and suddenly it's a no-asshole zone.

Donkey Kong New York (Lee), Friday, 15 December 2006 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Craig G - I don't think 5 hours is too much, there was a lot of game leading up to the Forest Temple, plus it is kind of long for a first dungeon. ALL the dungeons in Twilight Princess are sort of long, however, I wouldn't call any of them tedious.

The only tedious moment I've witnessed in the game so far has been SPOILERS AHOY the giant statues puzzle right before the master sword SPOILERS NO LONGER AHOY.

Yeah, but I heard Pheonix Wright is pretty damn short, w/ no replay value.

Also, i'm boggling at the fact that I'm older than nabisco.

also, gimme a recommendations list for DS/GBA games, preferably ones that i can acquire cheaply from the used shops.

can handheld systems sustain playing a long-form RPG(e.g. FFIII?)

Zelda is massive! I've put in about 20 hours, and just gotten to the end of the - SPOILER?

Desert temple. They've all got one though right? It has one of the most fun items Ive yet seen in a Zelda game though (probably forgetting some), hoping it comes in for use again at some point and I'll be shocked if Nintendo haven't crafted a mini game or two with it in mind...

HERE ENDETH THE SPOILER

I spent fuckin hours today just pootling about Hyrule though, trying out all the fishing (possibly the only thing to make me sad I don't have the Wii version) and everything. The point at which you can really explore - usually when you've collected the initial three items say - and the game really opens out is always my favourite. I think I'm starting to see a proper town starting to develop - along the lines of Wind Waker more than Clock Town from Majoras Mask most likely, but I'm hoping for anything in that regard, cos thats often one the greatest things about Zelda. I love the working, changing towns... Like having a mini animal crossing in the middle of a huge adventure game or something.

But yeah, it's fucking huge. Like they've just crammed in every last bit of every Zelda game in to one huge best of. And if, like the rumours say, this is the last Zelda in this traditional style then it makes sense to go out epic style.

Suedey McSuedeyson (Suedey ), Friday, 15 December 2006 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Unless the fishing gets more intertesting after hour 15 (where I'm at), you're not missing much there by not having the Wii remote. Using the remote with the bow is really really great though. And, of course, the sword.

Yeah I really really wanted to talk about this but don't want to ruin the surprise for others, opening that chest was one of the ultimate WTF moments in gaming history for me.

Have you done the fishing up at Lake Hylia yet, larry? I'm just wondering, cos it seemed like that would be great fun!

This game has really made me laugh on numerous occasions, and I'm really glad that's all still there (and especially that it's text based - contrary to what many reviews have said - cos the humour relies on being read for one [Malo's little mumblings when you're showing the kids how to use yr sword say], and having everything spoken breaks the game and how it all works...), supposed "darker serious tone" or not (and that item just sort of had me chuckling to myself with joy). S'funny though, I've seen a few people mention online that... nobody is talking about Zelda online! I mean, I'm sure they are in some places but it's almost as a)too busy playing and b)nobosy really wants to give anything away.
