CarsmileSteve (Carsmile Steve), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 10:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes you would be amazed how pub awareness spreads even when people aren't reading ILE.

24. MONORALE

davidcarp (davidcarp), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

http://www.butlinsmemories.com/7ea3bf40.jpg

The other Butlin's monorail opened at the Minehead camp on 13th May 1967. Running on a shorter half-mile run, the track formed a figure-of-eight loop taking in the Princess and Regency buildings. Construction took 4 months and the track varied from 16ft to 30ft above ground level. The tracks crossed each other on an impressive structure located above the outdoor swimming pool. A pair of 40-seat trains provided the service and only one station was built, this being situated to the rear of the Princess building. The Minehead monorail closed following an accident during the summer of 1996. One train ran into the back of another and 7 people received minor treatment. Butlins were fined a total of £22,500. The cost to upgrade the system was thought too high, so the monorail was closed for good. The structure remained in place for another two years before being torn down during the winter of 1998. The area where the trains crossed is now home to the Skyline Pavillion.

I actually went to that Minehead Butlins in 1990! It was horrible.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 17:07 (seventeen years ago) link

i forgot my swimsuit for the waterslide. i guess me and iggy are just gonna skinny dip.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 17:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I place myself in the hands of ailsa (metaphorically speaking of course).

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 7 December 2006 11:17 (seventeen years ago) link

dude i'm sorry i can't come; somehow i got confused and now i have to make cornbread in brixton!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 7 December 2006 11:27 (seventeen years ago) link

aw tracer, that's too bad. next time, buddy. i'm hoping i can get back in may of next year, we'll see.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 7 December 2006 11:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, I'm not going to be going to ATP now. Turns out the tourbus is leaving today at noon and not coming back until Monday. No way I could get that much time off work - and especially since I'm still not feeling entirely 100%.

I will try to drop in the FAP on the way home from work, but I don't think I'm up to drinking yet.

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 7 December 2006 11:35 (seventeen years ago) link

no worries, at least stop by, if you're not gonna drink! i just found out that negative approach is playing near where i'm staying tonight, but i doubt i'll make it, obv., since i'll be at the fap.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 7 December 2006 11:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i went for a job interview at minehead butlins once, have i told you?

this would be 10 years ago and i think it was at it's scabbiest...

...i didn't get the job (sound tech, not red coat)

CarsmileSteve (Carsmile Steve), Thursday, 7 December 2006 12:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I am supposed to be drinking socially with people from the office tonight, but if not will drop in. (What else to I have to do?)

substitute, mitya for him (mitya), Thursday, 7 December 2006 12:23 (seventeen years ago) link

i would like to say "i'm pleased to meet ya, mitya," so stop by!

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 7 December 2006 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

So looks like I'll be there just after 6.30--who else will be there at this time (so I know who to look for)? Or am I going to be a big Billy No Mates for a while?

tissp! (tissp!), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I should be there by then or a little after.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I also have to leave just before 8, unfortunately. I don't trust the tube to get me back to KX if I leave any later than that--if I miss the train, then I'm fucked

tissp! (tissp!), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I should be along early as well, and leaving 'around' 9.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i have to pick up teh baby, won't make it. boo!

emsk ( emsk ), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Bring teh baby, feed it gin.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i'll be there wearing a grey shirt with white stripes, and a dead c. t-shirt underneath. i've actually invited a band i work with - the early years - to meet up there, since i haven't met them before, so i might spend a fair bit at the beginning talking with them, so don't take it as lex-style aloofness or anything.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah! The Early Years! I love them! They're lovely people - we played with them at the Truck Festival.

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I will be there with my massive fuck off heavy backpack. And probably more layers than it's sensible to be wearing on the tube

tissp! (tissp!), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:57 (seventeen years ago) link

i am so stoked!

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Thursday, 7 December 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Right, I'm off to get the train. I am pretty excited too. See y'all soonish.

tissp! (tissp!), Thursday, 7 December 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Woo!

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 7 December 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmm, where exactly is this pub?

suzy artskooldisko (suzy artskooldisko), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Roupell St.

I may be coming early. I'm not sure I can last out the day. I feel sick as a dog and obviously quite upset over other things.

I need a fucking drink, but my stomach still ain't gonna handle it.

:-(

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Roupell Street is what I thought. Kate, Have an invite to a Kiehl's thing within spitting distance of yr. office and they are offering minced pies (and a glass of champagne if one is drinking). I am going because of the FREE STUFF. I am thinking of going between 6 and 6.30 and then on to pub, or maybe grabbing food before pub as I will never eat pub Thai again.

suzy artskooldisko (suzy artskooldisko), Thursday, 7 December 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Right, since nobody has suggested a bar for ATFAP, I suggest Hotshots from about 12ish on the Saturday. Unless there are other plans?

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Not as far as I know, I emailed Ailsa my number earlier so we can sort something out. 12ish in Hotshots sounds fine to me though!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll mail my mobile number to anyone who wants it, the better to co-ordinate such matters, if yez want.

What are the groups? There's Chalet Poo, Chalet Noo, and Chalet Lixi-and-some-LJers.

xpost - never mind then.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I have phone numbers galore now! teh_kit, Ward Fowler, Colonel Poo (who is now in my phone as Colonel Poo, if I get run over by a bus and someone scrolls through my phone to see which of my friends to contact, please someone explain why I have someone called Colonel Poo in my phone) are all now contactable. Yay!

xpost

Al, I'm all checked in and everything already for my flight, woo for organisation (and useful brothers), so will see you tomorrow ready to hit teh shops and teh cider farmers.

Don't get me so drunk on Saturday that X Factor semi-final v Gang Of Four actually becomes an issue in my mind :-0

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 7 December 2006 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Aaaaargh, I had forgotten NWW was early tomorrow. This just keeps getting better.

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Thursday, 7 December 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, that was fun. Despite the DDBs monopolising Stence for THE ENTIRE NIGHT but that's OK because they're some of my favourite DDBs and I got to exchange horrible soundman and horrible "oh noes we work for bankers!" stories with one of my fave bands in London. Yay. Being an Early Doors person, I had the best harem evah for a while.

Did Stence ever come out and party after I left?

I know TISSP made his train but will he ever get his wallet back? (Will he ever get his dignity back after I turned him over my knee and spanked him?)

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:31 (seventeen years ago) link

(Also, Louis Jagger is being a total sweetie IRL shockah!)

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, Stence did come out and we tried to set the problems o the world right although we still could not find three generations of pop-stars from the same family that complied with the rules.

Ed (dali), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Did the DDBs stick around?

(I heart them, I really do. As Stence said "Yeah, actually, they are the most *Kate* band in the world ever..." I hope he takes them to NYC and makes them big stars.)

*Three* generations? Has pop been around long enough? Does Nancy Sinatra have any sprogs?

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 8 December 2006 11:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Whitney Houston's family must be in there somewhere.

suzy artskooldisko (suzy artskooldisko), Friday, 8 December 2006 13:04 (seventeen years ago) link

She's always a quarter-tone flat on the high notes, I hear. ;-)

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 8 December 2006 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Country music families and the 3-gen rule, hwever, take yer pick.

Great to finaly meet the Stence.
