I need some green up in this piece. Do I go with a philodendron since I know they grow well (thanks, 3l41n3!) or try something more adventurous?

tehresa, Monday, 22 June 2009 00:44 (fifteen years ago) link

be more adventurous also grow some herbs or some herb

spite n ease (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2009 01:06 (fifteen years ago) link

this is otm the majority of houseplants look so ugly, worse than no plants at all

spite n ease (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2009 01:10 (fifteen years ago) link

tza, why are you so horticulturally timid, what is the back story.

estela, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:11 (fifteen years ago) link

she had a boyfriend who yelled PLANTS OUT PEOPLE IN a lot?

peace (jergins), Monday, 22 June 2009 01:12 (fifteen years ago) link

spite n ease (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2009 01:16 (fifteen years ago) link

get some green cochineal.

estela, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I overwatered/fed (I think?) a bunch of really big, beautiful plants in my v first apartment and I have been scared of my black thumb ever since.

I would like some herbs. Also maybe something that flowers.

tehresa, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

i want to get a rosemary plant

spite n ease (harbl), Monday, 22 June 2009 01:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Also I lived with a horticulturist for 2.5 years and I was too intimidated to grow things even though he only had one plant, outside. The landlords pulled it up and paved over the bed. O_o

tehresa, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:24 (fifteen years ago) link

there's a gerber daisy on my back stoop you can have. i'll water it to keep it alive if you think you want it.

lxy, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago) link

there must be all manner and variety of stuff in my yard you can have.

lxy, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago) link

But will it grow indoors? Gerber daisies are nice.

tehresa, Monday, 22 June 2009 01:49 (fifteen years ago) link

it's meant for the indoors, i think.

lxy, Monday, 22 June 2009 02:02 (fifteen years ago) link

stoopsie

estela, Monday, 22 June 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmmmmm how big is it? I would feel bad if I killed it :(

tehresa, Monday, 22 June 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

my lone house plant, a straggly ficus with a gin voice, said to ask you how fancy this apartment is that there are worthiness standards that have to be met, the air was blue with oxygen.

estela, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Your ficus seems judgmental.
My apartment is not fancy. But I care about the plants and I don't want them to die.

tehresa, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:45 (fifteen years ago) link

it's pretty little.

you won't kill it. i mean, it might die but not because you kill it. it's not gonna survive on my stoop for long so.

lxy, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:48 (fifteen years ago) link

i just don't care about houseplants. no plants, no pets, no children. i got my own shit to worry about without having to take care of a dependent of any ilk. sorry if i sound callous. maybe i am callous, who knows.

lxy, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 05:50 (fifteen years ago) link

grow MARIJUANA POT PLANTS

max max max max, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 14:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Estela, how do you find living with this broad of a ficus? I find ficuses (ficusi?) to be v fickle and when they are not pleased, what a mess they will make with those leaves!

tehresa, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:07 (fifteen years ago) link

mine seems to thrive on nothing, i think our warm humid climate suits it. it doesn't really lose leaves, sometimes one will go yellow but it takes a lot of abuse for that to happen. i can go away for 2-3 weeks and leave it and then after some water it revives almost immediately.

estela, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

That is quite a ficus. If I met her I would shake her hand. Or trunk. But maybe not because then leaves might fall.
Come to think of it, I saw some ficus trees thriving outdoors in Peru, which was very dry outside Lima. It is a mystery?

tehersa (tehresa), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i watered your daisy for you, tehersa. it perked right up.

stoop-worthy plant.

lxy, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 17:10 (fifteen years ago) link

aw. What if she develops separation anxiety?

tehersa (tehresa), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

we aren't that close i don't think either of us is very worried

lxy, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 17:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Well just in case we can work out visitations or something.

tehersa (tehresa), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link

lol you gonna haul that plant to my house on the bus every other weekend?

don't get any ideas about some shared custody shit. i'm not gonna give you money for plant food or new pots every september.

lxy, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

how about i visit you occasionally and say hey to the daisy when i'm there.

lxy, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

That's more what I was thinking :)

tehersa (tehresa), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

did i mention that it doesn't have flowers, just leaves?

lxy, Thursday, 25 June 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago) link

well, actually, did i mention that it doesn't have non-shriveled flowers, just leaves?

lxy, Thursday, 25 June 2009 00:49 (fifteen years ago) link

You did not but that's alright. I don't care what those other people say, I'm gonna love it anyway.

tehersa (tehresa), Thursday, 25 June 2009 02:26 (fifteen years ago) link

you should transport it home on a bicycle built for two.

estela, Thursday, 25 June 2009 02:28 (fifteen years ago) link

:)

lxy, Thursday, 25 June 2009 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i warmed my own heart with that post.

estela, Thursday, 25 June 2009 05:39 (fifteen years ago) link

the notion more than the post itself.

estela, Thursday, 25 June 2009 05:43 (fifteen years ago) link

i brought the daisy inside and cleaned it up a bit. looks pretty good!

lxy, Saturday, 27 June 2009 03:11 (fifteen years ago) link

my theory is that plants like a little stress. they try harder and are better for it. keeps em strong, not so "oh bring me every last thing all the time" lazylike.

lxy, Saturday, 27 June 2009 03:13 (fifteen years ago) link

daisylike

lxy, Saturday, 27 June 2009 03:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I bought some herbs yesterday: lemon verbena, lemon balm, and pineapple mint. They are all potted together, a fragrant theresome. My guess is they will struggle with indoor life.

tehersa (tehresa), Saturday, 27 June 2009 03:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Lol theresome! Oy I can't wait for real internets without autotext.

tehersa (tehresa), Saturday, 27 June 2009 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm going to miss your autotext.

estela, Saturday, 27 June 2009 03:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm sure it will crop back up from time to time.

tehersa (tehresa), Saturday, 27 June 2009 03:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i will hey a kick out of that.

yay they look so cute and happy!

lxy, Sunday, 28 June 2009 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

The herbs started looking droopy and sad so I watered them. Hope this helps!
*developing*

tehersa (tehresa), Monday, 29 June 2009 02:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i have hoped that hopeless kind of hope, it usually ends with you cutting your losses instead of your parsley.

estela, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:29 (fifteen years ago) link

ps estela, that's the daisy there on the right, all cleaned up for the changing of hands.

lxy, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:33 (fifteen years ago) link

she scrubbed up well, little daisy doolittle.

estela, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:37 (fifteen years ago) link

tru confession: i was a little apprehensive there for a coupla days after all my proclamations of good health on the stoop and then the poor thing.... but all is well now, just look!

lxy, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:42 (fifteen years ago) link

(even 'enry lost 'ope for a little while though, didn't he?)

lxy, Monday, 29 June 2009 02:52 (fifteen years ago) link

are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
does enchantment pour out of every door?
no, it's just on the stoop where you live!

lxy, Monday, 29 June 2009 04:19 (fifteen years ago) link

tehersa (tehresa), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

whatever it is has been busy! poor daisy, she's always been a little bit troubled.

lxy, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 22:59 (fifteen years ago) link

those plants are awfully fluffy, though. good work, tehe.

lxy, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:00 (fifteen years ago) link

they are bending towards the window; i have to remember to rotate them.
i hope i can fix this leaf miner issue :(

tehersa (tehresa), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

god, where's linghert when we need him!

lxy, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't know if he would be too useful in this situation as when he found some pests on his flower he threw it away.

tehersa (tehresa), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Although leafminer injuries are conspicuous, most leafminers produce injuries that have little, if any, effect on plant health.

leafminer injuries. what a world.

tehersa (tehresa), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:04 (fifteen years ago) link

little, if any,

lxy, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 05:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm proud to be a leaf miner's daughter
I remember well, the well where I drew water

browsing the freecycle i found an offered redwood sapling. i think that is not apartment-worthy, but i can dream, right? imagine having your very own redwood!!!

te,he (tehresa), Friday, 10 July 2009 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i imagined it for a few seconds but now i am imagining something else.

estela, Friday, 10 July 2009 21:57 (fifteen years ago) link

what are you imagining right now?

te,he (tehresa), Friday, 10 July 2009 22:01 (fifteen years ago) link

i am imaging it would block all the sunlight and estela's magic ficus would drop its leaves in dismay.

lxy, Friday, 10 July 2009 22:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i was imagining breakfast but now i'm imagining how tsky you would have been if you'd seen the sorry state of my thirsty ficus yesterday.

estela, Friday, 10 July 2009 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

i think daisy has a bipolar disorder!

this morning, she was pert and happy, basking in the sun.
i went out for 2 hours and when i came home she was all wilted and droopy and oh so sad.
i gave her some water and 30 min later she was all happy again! so odd! the soil was dry around the edges, but still damp in the center! what a finicky little creature!

daisy is a bit of a nutter - her leaves stick up every which way the way my hair does when i get up in the morning
http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/tza/102_9336.jpg

she has a new baby leaf
http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/tza/102_9339.jpg

the herbs are really confused and tangled and not very happy with me right now
http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp95/tza/102_9338.jpg

i'm going to try to find a philodendron since they seem to grow really well (like the one in my old office).

te,he (tehresa), Sunday, 26 July 2009 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

two months pass...

daisy keeps sprouting new leaves but her under leaves are yellow. i think she needs a new pot. i got one, now i need to get potting soil. i hope i don't kill her!
still no flowers.

te,he (tehresa), Sunday, 4 October 2009 05:20 (fifteen years ago) link

did u cut the yellow leaves off?

spite n ease (harbl), Sunday, 4 October 2009 13:12 (fifteen years ago) link

i was waiting for repotting day. should i do it now?

te,he (tehresa), Sunday, 4 October 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

think i had a secret hope they would turn green and healthy again.

te,he (tehresa), Sunday, 4 October 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, cut them and any other dead-looking leaves off. your plant will look happier the next day unless something's really wrong with it.

spite n ease (harbl), Sunday, 4 October 2009 19:25 (fifteen years ago) link

i took off the dead dead ones that were crunchy but i gotta get the scissors for those yellowers.

te,he (tehresa), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

so i need a TALL skinny plant to go in a corner (like 1.5m high), but our room doesn't get much direct light - just filtered light thru venetian blinds that are usually closed. any recommnendations?

Bamboo? Corn plant (some sort of yucca I think)? Snake plant (or whatever it's called - aka Mother-in-law's Tongue)? Some viney thing like pothos that you can train upwards?

jaq, Monday, 5 October 2009 00:18 (fifteen years ago) link

now i want more plants.
but i am scared they'll get sick.

oh! philodendron maybe i will do that since my office one was pretty decent.

te,he (tehresa), Monday, 5 October 2009 00:20 (fifteen years ago) link

my herb pot is kind of like a medusa yin yang. the mint on one side is sad and crunchy and some of it is ok but v dark green. meanwhile the lemon balm is sprouting new leaves like no tomorrow. i don't know how to repot just the lemon balm and bid the mint adieu.

daisy succumbed to some menacing rust, but this fine lady seems to be immune :) very hearty - i forgot to water when i went away for 5 days and she perked right back up as soon as i re-hydrated. she also loves to lean into the light.

she certainly has. i'm afraid she is up to no good. i heard she's been having typing lessons. ignore me at your peril.

some, including me, have taken to calling her ms. connivy.

estela, Monday, 9 July 2012 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

We totally had to move her away from the liquor cabinet, it's true.

two weeks pass...

The Geranium

When I put her out, once, by the garbage pail,
She looked so limp and bedraggled,
So foolish and trusting, like a sick poodle,
Or a wizened aster in late September,
I brought her back in again
For a new routine--
Vitamins, water, and whatever
Sustenance seemed sensible
At the time: she'd lived
So long on gin, bobbie pins, half-smoked cigars, dead beer,
Her shriveled petals falling
On the faded carpet, the stale
Steak grease stuck to her fuzzy leaves.
(Dried-out, she creaked like a tulip.)
The things she endured!--
The dumb dames shrieking half the night
Or the two of us, alone, both seedy,
Me breathing booze at her,
She leaning out of her pot toward the window.
Near the end, she seemed almost to hear me--
And that was scary--
So when that snuffling cretin of a maid
Threw her, pot and all, into the trash-can,
I said nothing.
But I sacked the presumptuous hag the next week,
I was that lonely.

btw my money tree didn't really survive the journey to our new home. it's still here but looking very sad. We even left out in a hotel and weby back for it but I fear it's a lost cause :(
