Palast der Republik: It served primarily as the seat of the East German parliament, the Volkskammer, but it also housed two large auditoriums, art galleries, restaurants and a bowling alley. Demolished in 2006.

Vienna's excellent Architekturzentrum will be hosting a new photography show, opening this Wednesday, April 24, called Sinai Hotels. With images by Sabine Haubitz and Stefanie Zoche of Haubitz+Zoche, the show looks at "the concrete skeletons of five-star hotel complexes" abandoned on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.

FLOODED TRAILER 1992 Salton Sea Beach, CA. Flooded and abandoned in the late 1970s. Over 100F, the smell was overwhelming. Tripod was sinking in the mud. Night, full moon, 5+ minutes, 160T film. Green and red-gelled strobe and red-gelled flashlight. This was cleaned up in the early 2000s.

...the South China Mall, which opened with great fanfare in 2005, is not just the world’s largest. With fewer than a dozen stores scattered through a space designed to house 1,500, it is also the world’s emptiest – a dusty, decrepit complex of buildings marked by peeling paint, dead light bulbs, and dismembered mannequins.
― jergins, Monday, 16 June 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)
What sets the South China Mall apart from the rest, besides its mind-numbing size, is that it never went into decline. The tenants didn’t jump ship; they never even came on board. The mall entered the world pre-ruined, as if its developers had deliberately created an attraction for people with a taste for abandonment and decay.

The intenisty of the exposure dose of radiation at 10 km from site is not high. The dose received by us for a day is comparable to what would be received on one transatlantic flight. Greatest danger is risk of inhaling a hot particle, a slice of nuclear fuel from a reactor.

wow. someone was telling me about that place recently. so much weird shit like: As of the 2000 census, there were 21 people, 10 households, and 7 families residing in the borough. As of March 2004, there were eighteen people residing in nine dwellings. It is expected that many former residents will return in 2016 to open a time capsule buried in 1966 next to the veterans' memorial. In 2002, the United States Postal Service revoked Centralia's ZIP code, 17927.

Dehli's MG Road is also destruction. Once upon a time the road gleamed with shopping malls and furniture stores; but two years ago, the government decided that these were illegal constructions necessary to be sealed. “Sealing” in practice means halfhearted bulldozing — enough to discourage inhabitance while creating the impression that you travel to Gurgaon by way of Beirut.

This place was built by an old arms dealer. He was supposedly 'anti-war' yet he constructed this arsenal to store his excess army surpluses in one of the structures then built a smaller castle to reside in. Some of the materials being stored exploded and destroyed parts of the castle. It became vacant and the elements and humans degraded it to what you see in the pictures

The photographs in Asylum were made at the Oregon State Hospital, which was called the Oregon Insane Asylum when it was built in the 1880’s. The images depict rooms in the main building of the facility that have been abandoned since 1965.

urban decay is one of my favourite things! when i was a kid there was this spooky building out in a semi-rural town that gave me nightmares: it was probably 10 stories high, but it had no floors - it was hollow - and it had this huge block-lettered sign at the top saying 'SPACE TO LET'. i didn't know what 'let' meant so i assumed there was an 'i' missing and it was actually SPACE TOIILET. i always got a weird feeling when we drove by. i don't even know if it's still there.
