>> Favorite Radio Show
Dave: For some weird reason, the David Lee Roth morning radio show (now defunct). DLR replaced Howard Stern's time slot at KROQ after "the king of all media" made the jump to satellite radio. I'm not sure, but I don't think that David Lee Roth had too many credentials other than the fact that he was a wacky personality that used to tear shit up in the 80's as the frontman of Van Halen, but for some reason KROQ thought it would be a great idea to give him a daily weekday show at 6 in the morning.
Don't get me wrong, this show totally sucked ass in a major way. I used to show up to Battles practice and bitch about how lame the show was that morning. I used to want to call in to the show to tell him how much I thought he was the shit when he was in Van Halen and how much he totally sucks now. His jokes were wicked lame, his stories made absolutely no sense, his whole staff sucked, and he would play really lame music while he talked over it. I totally hated this show, it was like listening to a car crash every morning. It only lasted for a couple months, and as the show got older and people kept calling in and doggin' DLR, the higher-ups at KROQ started to take more stuff away from him, he could no longer play that lame music while he talked; they took away his staff and replaced it with a super-dry Australian guy that had absolutely no chemistry and nothing in common with DLR. Towards the end he was a defeated man; he was fired and the show was taken off the air.
However, almost a year and a half has gone by, and, in retrospect, I now realize that David Lee Roth was really trying to push some boundaries, and as much as his show may have sucked, he really managed to, for better or worse, strike a chord with me. I started to feel bad for him towards the end of the show, I felt how he realized that there could be something better than your average "Mike and the Mad Dog" type shit and he strived for something outside of the box, and the higher-ups cut him back down to size. Thus, DLR is my, in recent memory favorite radio show, he was a man that stood up for mankind and held a mirror up to those fat corporate cats sitting in their cushy office chairs in their safe well-constructed glass boxes that they work within and in a way, said, I dare you to challenge the state of this dystopian society that we've created for ourselves. DLR was, to your average plumber in New Jersey, unsuccessful in his attempt at being a radio show host, but to the artist that dwells within all of us, he was a beacon of light.

so yesterday i did the manual labor until like 9pm. drywall, framing all the shit. then i was like, i think i'll go climb a 12300 ft. mountain. (this is where things get gringi5h!) so i pack my pack, pack my pipe (exhaust pipe with a banana. that joke is still funny even when it's my car!) and i drove up to the mt. got on the trail solo at 10:38 last night (course nobody wants to night hike. wtf). hiked till 12:25. threw the bag down to sleep at like 11300 ft. smoked, perfect. woke up at 8. summited and back to truck by 12::22 this afternoon. anyways, 2 things happened. chipmunks almost ate me alive in the fashion of a swarm of red ants or giant flock of birds. on the summit, those fuckers were after me. well, basically i stayed still and then they started crawling on me and licking my sweat. grooooosss! OMG! so i thought, hey, i'm like the chipmunk whisperer (heady points?). BUT THEN. walking off the summit, oh look what is right in the trail on the ridge of a mt... a big fucking big horn sheep. he was pissed. he was sort of tryin to step to me. which is hilarious because as brett knows, when you hike alone, especially at night but really anytime, you will have a recurring thought about an animal attacking you and you killing it with bare hands, a walking stick, and your knife. always the knife. then you'd be on the cover of a local newspaper and you mentally write the outline for the story and think about the quotes you'll say to the reporters. brett, if i'm wrong, tell me. so last night i was thinking if a big horn started charging me, my quote would be "hey, i just gave it the matador treatment, i held out my pack, let him hit that, then sunk my knife in his side and his momentum ripped him open from shoulder to hip. no big deal, this sort of thing just happens in the wild. " so there the sheep is, and i'm like "hey, dont ram me" and he keeps like walking closer to me trying to punk me. meanwhile i have my knife in one hand and my cam in the other. and i was near a tree i figured i'd use for cover if shit got real. i remember mentally changing the newspaper story to incorporate the tree, while it was happening. but i just gave him space and he chilled.

Cato @8 - are you a NW native?
You used this odd colloquialism in your post I only hear from Seattle born and raised. You use the word "anymore" in an affirmative way, rather than negative. In my mind, "anymore" is what you say when the sentiment is negative or something has ceased to be a certain way. "we don't do that anymore." Your sentance above sounds strange to me, I would have used the word "nowadays".
Everytime I hear "anymore" used this way, it always stops me in my tracks. The only people I have heard say it are natives, like my friend and his mom, both of which are from Seattle.
Just curious....

Yet in a few hold-outs, where history played odd tricks, Art Deco still dominates. Their names are surprising: Napier in New Zealand, rebuilt in one go after an earthquake in 1931; Miami Beach; the Eritrean capital Asmara, a masterpiece from the age of the brief Italian empire.

Two guys by the name of Silas and Jamal decided to one day smoke something magical, which eventually helps them to ace their college entrance exam. This eventually lands them in Harvard, where they're surrounded by the world of Ivy Leaguers. Although their new lifestyle is much different from back home, they kept on having fun until their supernatural smoke runs out. Now, they are on their own and they have to rely on each other to survive.

The 2.2 km (1.4 miles) long Lefortovo Tunnel in Russia is the fifth longest ‘in-city’ tunnel in all of Europe. There is a river running over it and water leaks at some points. When the temperature reaches minus 38 degrees, like it did last winter, the road freezes and the result is this video taken during a single day with the tunnel camera.

Deejay Vybz Kartel has lauded the achievements of the Jamaican athletes in Beijing, China in a statement issued through his publicity team today that spoke to the 'mindblowing display of raw Jamaican talent' on full display on the international scene. "Congrats to Mr. Bolt, Shelly Ann Fraser and the entire Olympic team for yet another mind-blowing display of raw Jamaican talent, strength and determination. Usain and Asafa Powell will undoubtedly go down in history as two of the greatest male athletes ever," the statement said. "And I have to give special congratulations to the women who created history with a clean sweep in the 100 metres final. Our Jamaican women are world-beaters in almost every endeavour or occupation. Overall, the Jamaican Olympic team has proven that with combined effort, teamwork and humility, we can indeed conquer the unconquerable and achieve what was thought before to be impossible and I lift my hat to them and congratulate them with all my heart."He also added jokingly that he would be coming to the nighclub to celebrate and drink 'Vybz Rum with the athletes'.

Giant clams two feet long might have helped feed prehistoric humans as they first migrated out of Africa, new research reveals.
The species, Tridacna costata, once accounted for more than 80 percent of giant clams in the Red Sea, researcher now say. Today, these mollusks, the first new living species of giant clam found in two decades, represent less than 1 percent of giant clams living there.

DJ Bone’s weary and distorted tenor, which laments artists who “replicate” and a “circus world” with no chance of escape, contrasts with unrelenting progressions and the metallic upstroke intensifying with each passing measure. Only the hope that music and dancing offer some reprieve from everyday life keeps the existential dread at bay; the instrumental mix is perhaps a bit friendlier to fragile minds.

The Richat Structure, a prominent circular feature in the Sahara desert of Mauritania near Ouadane, has attracted attention since the earliest space missions because it forms a conspicuous bull's-eye in the otherwise rather featureless expanse of the desert. It has a diameter of almost 30 miles and has become a landmark for space shuttle crews.

The last years, the ones in Paris, were obviously more represented, but small fragments of my past lives, in different hearts and places, found hospitality beside them. Each of them was a potential gate to my past life, to use in case of sentimental or emotional needs, or in case of a sudden lack of references, or just for fun.
That pile of luggage hid a high potential of experiences, a surplus value deriving from their actual space-time location and from my mental state. The casual condition was linked to the travel I was starting.
My train arrived and I went towards the cabin I had booked. After some time my train departed. When it started moving, the pendulum of my life stopped for a long extra-dimensional moment.

i drove across the lake this morning. when i got up, at the house, i could see that low fog covered the lake. i couldn't see the city. it seemed like i was looking out at the ocean. when i drove across i drove into the fog bank, on the bridge, the fog surrounded me and i couldn't see the suburbs in my rearview. then the university and then the city came into view, all lit up, sun shining, fog gone.

on saturday night i was the boss of the place and i ran shit like a hellof tough captain of a ship but things happened, things worth recording:
a woman had a stroke and we had to call 911.
a man wandered in at intermission, accosted the service staff, then plunked himself down on a sofa in the lobby. i got called--in the middle of my reports--and went in and sat with him. at first he was belligerent, maybe drunk, when i was standing over him, but then i sat across from him and we got to talking. it turns out he was crazy. (i was 98% sure at that point he wasn't a patron). he told me about his house in Kona. he wouldn't let me touch his ID. he explained that his ID was a secret ID, from the CIA, with codes on the back. as we chatted i waited and wondered where security was. they'd been called at least 5 minutes earlier, an eon in crazypersontime. at one point we were talking and chatting and laughing and turned to the head usher (there were about 15 people watching this all go down) and yelled WHERE IS SECURITY?? and then turned back to the man and he kept talking like nothing had happened. lol. security eventually did show up and picked him up by the scruff of the neck and ran him out the front doors. turned out he had a restraining order and was not allowed on campus for 5 days. i was sick through all of this.

what i wrote in my report• A few minutes into the second act I was called to the grand lobby. A man had accosted Savor staff, calling them names. I remembered him as soon as I saw him, having shooed him away for smoking too near the door. He’d given me grief at the time, and as I approached I was ready for more. Unsure whether he was a patron or not—my gut said no—I stood over him, asking for a ticket. He was belligerent to begin with, but then I sat down, and the two of us sat there eye to eye and he calmed some. He told me his name, Alan Wallace King, and about his house on Kona. He showed me the secret ID the CIA had given him. When he paused for breath I asked for the ticket he couldn’t provide, the name of the friend he couldn’t come up with. As he talked I turned to head usher Jim, standing with a group, watching me, and hollered out, “WHERE IS SECURITY?” That didn’t faze Alan Wallace King, He kept talking. Five minutes later, an eternity in crazy person time, security showed up, forcefully ejecting Mr. King out of the venue onto the street and into the night. It was then that we found out about the restraining order, and that he was not allowed on Seattle Center grounds. Good night, Mr. King!

wow your work is crazy. my work story is way less funny/interesting:
so this girl i work(ed) with sometimes, who is a 'gender studies' grad student and likes to use the words 'commnicate' and 'communication' as often as possible, always stressing the importance of both, and yet somehow managing to be the most inarticulate person i've met (see: a 10 minute voicemail just to tell me i'm working saturday), has just resigned. she is annoying as fuck and i have bitched about her constantly since beginning this job; i find her patronising, boring, self righteous etc etc. but now i got this email today:
I also wanted to let you know, that it has been so great getting to know you. You are a terrific person, and I don't think work would have been quite as enjoyable if it wasn't for working alongside you. Good luck with all your future endeavors. I really hope that we can stay in touch. Take care, and I wish you and Jordan happy holidays.

"I will pick the smooth yarrow that my figure may be more elegant, that my lips may be warmer, that my voice may be more cheerful; may my voice be like a sunbeam, may my lips be like the juice of the strawberries. May I be an island in the sea, may I be a hill on the land, may I be a star when the moon wanes, may I be a staff to the weak one: I shall wound every man, no man shall would me."

Found Sound City
There's a building somewhere in New York City: every time you go there – maybe it's a bank or a department store or the office where you work – you hear what sounds like air-conditioning equipment, a distant droning noise in the background that you can't quite place. But it's always there – maybe sometimes higher pitched than other days, but always audible. One day, though, you happen to be there with some friends and you've got a videocamera. You're filming each other goofing off, playing in the stairwells, and so on – but when you get back home and begin to watch the video you realize it's actually quite boring. Making faces at a camera is not as interesting as you'd hoped it'd be. So – overlooking the fact that this would not actually be possible – you begin to fast-forward the video at 4x speed, then 8x, then 16x, then 32x – and you realize, with a collective gasp, that that droning sound in the background is not a drone at all but a piece of music played slow to the point of unrecognizability. It's Beethoven, say, or Jimi Hendrix. Someone is playing incredibly slow music, like a kind of acoustic glacier, inside the building. It's avant-garde Muzak. You go a little crazy upon discovering this, however, and begin to make field recordings all over Manhattan, recording drones. You stand in alleys, beneath trees in Central Park, and inside abandoned warehouses, capturing ambient background sounds on tape. You visit the airport, deliberately seek out traffic jams, and illegally access basements on the Upper East Side. And for the next six months you sit and listen to all of them at 32x speed – 64x speed, 128x speed – convinced that this world has strange music embedded in it somewhere and, if only you use your equipment right, you can find it.

Don't worry if the melody becomes random, that's intentional, yeah. Even if the melody looses its connection to the rhythm, there is nothing wrong with it. Even if you loose the touch with reality while you're listening, there's nothing wrong there too, because this music is made to put you in some abstract worlds....The only thing that you should worry about is actually not to listen to this stuff too much, realising in the end it may not be of much help if you want to increase your mental awareness of the real world wink.gif.

― lxy, Monday, 13 April 2009 03:02 (fifteen years ago) link
i thought this was kind of funny. from the strangers' last days:
This happened last Wednesday night on the Metro 28 headed northbound. A woman who was obviously clueless or couldn't care less was talking on her phone at the rear of the bus, loud enough for everyone in the back half to hear her. She was talking about the most pathetic drivel, in a sing-song whine: "Oh, you know, I just don't know what I want in life, but that's always been the case with me, hasn't it? i just don't know, and I may never know," and on and on, and you get the point.
She did this from downtown to Fremont. In Fremont, she started lamenting about how bad the public radio is in Seattle. "Oh, they have this little radio staion, and it's so, you know, 'cute', like this is your NPR station, and you're so proud of it, and it's so little it's, you know, cute, and it's just so sad. I mean, Minneapolis has like, the largest public radio in the country, or in the world, and it's like, a 5-story building, and I just miss NPR..."
Everyone on the bus endured this until the guy next to her did the classic move: He took out his cell phone and pretended to talk to someone in a much louder voice: "Oh, I'm on the bus and this woman is so clueless, she's just talking so loud, and complaining about public radio..." He has to almost shout for her to get the clue, at which point this flannel/trucker-hat/work-boot guy directly across from her joins in, and starts schooling her about public radio, on and on about how the size of the Seattle market warrants these stations, and Minneapolis/St. Paul is much bigger, and what about Los Angeles, where KCRW is the flagship station for NPR, and they have KPCC and KPFA and then he started mocking her and whining and crying, "I miss Minnesota radio, waaaah," and she stayed on her cell the whole time, but told the trucker guy, "You're being passive-aggressive" which made a few few people actually laugh out loud.
it was all pretty entertaining, Seattleites (who are notoriously passive-aggressive, i agree) sticking up for our public radio....

about it^:
Elijah Porter, a student at the Yale School of Architecture, has a great Flickr set up called Material Formation in Design. It features several awesome examples of how strategic cutting can transform a solid surface into a porous structure.
...you're looking at what might be called subtractive origami, wherein diamond-shaped cuts have introduced foldability and mesh into a solid sheet of steel.

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/O/ODD_MYSTERY_SAFE?SITE=PAREA&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT
TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Two men said they've found an abandoned safe by the side of some railroad tracks and that it could be more than a century old. Bill Dodd, one of the men who found the safe about a month and a half ago, says it weighs about 4,000 pounds. It's now on display at an east Tulsa sign company while the men decide what to do with it.
The patent dates on the safe range from 1856 to 1907. Dodd says that the safe is rusted shut and its locks have been broken off. He says he thinks there's something inside and that it hasn't been opened as far as he knows.
Dodd said the safe could be auctioned off for charity or the men who found it could open it themselves. He says the latter option probably would require cutting into the safe.

Preserve is on going project to produce a permanent visual record of hand painted building signage. Many of these are being erased from our cityscapes either being worn away by weather over time, covered as buildings have been repainted, disappearing as buildings are demolished or replaced with modern signage equivalents. This site will be updated regularly with my latest images and you are invited to contribute to this work.

1995Berlin, GermanyShe was the first woman that I let move in with me. All my friends thought I needed to learn to let people in more. A few months after she moved in, I was offered to travel to the US. She could not come along. At the airport we said goodbye in tears, and she was assuring me she could not survive three weeks without me.I returned after three weeks, and she said: «I fell in love with someone else. I have known her for just 4 days, but I know that she can give me everything that you cannot.»I was banal and asked about her plans regarding our life together. The next day she still had no answer, so I kicked her out. She immediately went on holiday with her new girlfriend while her furniture stayed with me. Not knowing what to do with my anger, I finally bought this axe at Karstadt to blow off steam and to give her at least a small feeling of loss – which she obviously did not have after our break-up.In the 14 days of her holiday, every day I axed one piece of her furniture. I kept the remains there, as an expression of my inner condition. The more her room filled with chopped furniture acquiring the look of my soul, the better I felt. Two weeks after she left, she came back for the furniture. It was neatly arranged into small heaps and fragments of wood. She took that trash and left my apartment for good. The axe was promoted to a therapy instrument.

6:45 PMBitterness To Be Classified As a Mental Illnessfrom Slashdot by samzenpus
Some psychiatrists are trying to get excessive bitterness identified as a mental illness named post-traumatic embitterment disorder. Of course this has some people who live perfect little lives, and always get what they want, questioning the new classification. The so called "disorder" is modeled after post-traumatic stress disorder because it too is a response to a trauma that endures. "They feel the world has treated them unfairly. It's one step more complex than anger. They're angry plus helpless," says Dr. Michael Linden, the psychiatrist who put a name to how the world works.

“The renewal of life is the great theme of our age, not the further dominance, in ever more frozen and compulsive forms, of the machine. And the first step for each of us is to seize the initiative and recover our own capacity for living; to detach ourselves from the daily routine to make ourselves self-respecting, self-governing, persons. In short, we must take things into our own hands. Before art on any great scale can redress our lop-sided [technology], we must put ourselves in the mood and frame of mind in which art becomes possible, as either creation or re-creation: above all we must learn to pause, to be silent, to close our eyes and wait.”
– Lewis Mumford, 1951

The holy grail of chips and salsa has been located at Redwood on Capitol Hill. The chips are brought directly from the deep fryer, burning hot, plenty salty, with a squeeze of lime; they're entirely crispy, but they still have enough body that you know you're eating a tortilla. The salsa is pico de gallo–style, fresh and uncomplicated, made with organic tomatoes and onions and pickled jalapeños. Chips and salsa are not usually a thrill. These are shockingly, amazingly good. Your mouth will tell your brain that you're having a life-changing experience. (Redwood, 514 E Howell St, 329-1952. 4 pm–2 am, $4/$3 at happy hour, 21+.)

ah, now i know, thanks to wikipedia:
QSL cards confirm either a two-way radiocommunication between two amateur radio stations or a one-way reception of a signal from an AM radio, FM radio, television or shortwave broadcasting station. They can also confirm the reception of a two-way radiocommunication by a third party listener. A typical QSL card is the same size and made from the same material as a typical postcard, and most are sent through the mail as such.

"Discovery News reports that scientists have identified a region of the brain which appears to control morality and discovered that a powerful magnetic field can scramble the moral center of the brain, impairing volunteers' notion of right and wrong. 'You think of morality as being a really high-level behavior,' says Liane Young, a scientist at MIT and co-author of the article. 'To be able to apply (a magnetic field) to a specific brain region and change people's moral judgments is really astonishing.'"

Kabul Nightlife: Thriving in Between Suicide BombsBy Tim McGirk Tuesday, Apr. 13, 2010
Nightlife may seem like a luxury no one can afford in Kabul. The Afghan capital is hit by suicide bombers with depressing regularity, and on some nights expatriates receive word from their embassies that a suicide team is plotting to attack a "foreign guest house" — and these are the truly chilling words — "in your neighborhood." On those occasions, you sleep with your clothes on and shoes beside the bed, after having mapped out an escape route over the wall into your (hopefully friendly) neighbor's garden.(See a TIME video on the nightlife in Baghdad.)
But on most nights, Kabul's expatriates go out and partake in the manic craziness of the city's bar and restaurant scene in houses reminiscent of America's Prohibition-era speakeasies, behind 20-ft.-tall blast walls and an outer perimeter of armed Afghan security guards. "It's like dancing at the edge of a volcano," explains Anne Seidel, a German architect working for the U.N. in Kabul. The expatriates are a boisterous crowd of young and usually single diplomats, aid workers, journalists, spies and mercenaries — or, as they like to call themselves, "contractors." Most of them earn $100,000 salaries and have money to burn. They tend to be adventurous, but the security constraints of their jobs often leave them cloistered in claustrophobic boredom — following suicide attacks, most foreigners are confined to their fort-like compounds.
When the dust settles, Kabul has hordes of war-zone entrepreneurs who are only too happy to help lighten the wallets of expatriates while providing opportunities to blow off steam. And that has given the Afghan capital a greater variety of restaurants than Delhi, Karachi or Tehran, cities 10 times its size. Kabul offers Thai cuisine as well as Turkish, Balkan, Italian, French and Persian, plus several steakhouses, a martini bar with a DJ and a Mexican cantina with high-stakes poker games. The city boasts dozens of Chinese restaurants, but a few were shut down several years ago when authorities realized that the owners were offering the services of hookers along with the Kung Pao chicken. Tiger prawns, pork loins and French wines are flown in from Dubai. The T-bone steaks come frozen from Australia.
It takes a special entrepreneurial mentality to look at a city under sporadic siege by jihadists and see a golden opportunity for supplying exotic food and illegal booze. Some restaurateurs have even migrated to Kabul from past wars in the Balkans or East Timor; they missed the wartime camaraderie — and the whopping profits. Some provide echoes of Bertolt Brecht's archetypal war profiteer, the indomitable Mother Courage, who drove a cart through an artillery barrage to make a profit off the sale of 50 stale loaves of bread. A female Thai restaurant owner says she gives a dagger to each of her waitresses to scare off kidnappers in the bazaar — do-it-yourself security at its best.

People making travel plans may unwittingly heed a strange rule of thumb — southern routes rule. In a new experiment, volunteers chose paths that dipped south over routes of the same distance that arched northward, perhaps because northern routes intuitively seem uphill and thus more difficult, researchers suggest.
sciencenewsVolunteers also estimated that it would take considerably longer to drive between the same pairs of U.S. cities if traveling from south to north, as opposed to north to south, says psychologist and study director Tad Brunyé of the U.S. Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command in Natick, Mass., and Tufts University in Medford, Mass. For journeys that averaged 798 miles, time estimates for north-going jaunts averaged one hour and 39 minutes more than south-going trips, he and his colleagues report in an upcoming Memory & Cognition.

Two on a big ocean
Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore met while studying philosophy in college. The two agreed that upon graduating they would sell their collective possessions and leave behind their lives in Denver. They planned to buy a small sailboat and spend the next year living aboard and traveling exclusively under sail. For years this dream was carefully nurtured while preparations were made. Learning to sail and selecting a boat is difficult to accomplish from a landlocked state. Their nautical self-education consisted of a steady diet of how-to books and videos. They were motivated by stories shared by sailors like Joshua Slocum, or Lin and Larry Pardey. On a sailboat minimalism transcends efficiency. There are no schedules, no agendas, or the many concerns that come with modern life. A sailor cares only for the direction of the wind and the condition of the water. Riley and Moore did not want their perception of the world to be shaped by spreadsheets, or facts gleaned in classrooms. They wanted a life of experience unmediated by people or things, a life of intimate participation with their environment. Cell phones, television, household appliances, the conveniences of modern life were traded for simplicity and contentment. A return to evenings spent indulging in the profound silence of the remotest regions, far from the yellowy glow of civilization.
Voyaging along the North Atlantic coastline for seven months at an average speed of five miles an hour lends itself to reordering one’s priorities. The long way is the beautiful one. The hard way is the most rewarding. Two years after completing their 2500 nautical mile voyage, Riley and Moore’s experience has led them to seek out a new endeavor. Their music bears the mark of months spent alone with the sea and each other. It is tinged with the sweet affection of new lovers. It bears the uncluttered aesthetic of time spent in remote and uninhabited regions. Their music is a modest attempt to translate an old truth rediscovered. Their album will be released by Fat Possum in January 2011.

SEATTLE – Some members of the 12th Man ended up in jail over the weekend when Hoquiam Police decided to use last Saturday's playoff game as a way to round up some suspects.
Police figured a lot of people would be home watching the game on TV, so they decided to knock on the doors of those with outstanding warrants.
Twenty-three people were booked into jail. They also missed the end of the game.
