jergins, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 08:33 (sixteen years ago) link

silly. that's a picture from last summer... sharecroppers is an interloping bottle of wine. and the whalers is long gone by now. as is the one barrel, sadly. that malibu may still be hiding there in the back.

lxy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 07:45 (sixteen years ago) link

lol at the light cruzan. was david over again?

what's the one on the left?

jergins, Thursday, 26 April 2007 08:19 (sixteen years ago) link

no, i bought it. it's okay when you want something super light. you never even tried it! you don't know!

on the left is saint james.

i had completely forgotten about the barbancourt. there's another almost empty bottle of goslings back there, and that fucking sailor jerry's. and the poor little wee bottle of malibu still: the neglected little sister of the rum cupboard.

and jim beam? wtf?

lxy, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

you will be amused to know that i had to stand on a chair to take that picture.

lxy, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 04:17 (sixteen years ago) link

i bought a tough bottle of rum last night, can't even remember the name, left it at the party. but! i got good and drunk until the soda ran out and I introduced this girl Mikaela to the pleasure of rum rickeys and she got sauced. the headache today is worth it.

jergins, Sunday, 6 May 2007 12:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't know how i missed that link to the havana rum museum till now. according to Lonely Planet Cuba, they also give excellent dancing lessons at the museum. let's go!

lxy, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

(children get in free. this is amusing me all the livelong.)

lxy, Sunday, 6 May 2007 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

it's payday so i bought 4 bottles of rum and a carton of cigarettes. what a happy happy thing.

and since i know you're going to ask, i will save you the trouble and just tell you:

mt. gay, goslings, flor de cana 7 year, cockspur, benson & hedges

the latter i will save for your homecoming.

lxy, Friday, 11 May 2007 03:53 (sixteen years ago) link

lxy, Monday, 2 July 2007 03:03 (sixteen years ago) link

this evening i was surprised to find that there was still a good amount of old mill left in the cupboard. why did this not get drunk at our party? did we put it away?

regardless, i was happy to find it, and was / am / will continue to be happy to consume some of it.

This month BOKA renames Happy Hour. Five lanes of pain equal five lane sof gain for those who aren't ready to endure the commute. Enjoy the signature cocktail the Traffic Jam, a delectable combination of Bacardi Rum, fresh muddled raspberries(red for stop), and mint ( green for go); with a citrus sugar rim (yellow...you get the idea) for $5 for the duration of Rush Hour, which, during the month of August will extend to 8pm. Plenty of time for the traffic to ease up.

Rush Hour: Monday - Friday from 3pm - 8pm

jergins, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 21:10 (sixteen years ago) link

we should go... bar menu (half price during happy / rush hour) sounds good.

***Sex On the Beach***

When comes to drinking, you like it to go down smooth.
You really don't like the taste of alcohol - just its effect on you.
So, you're proud to get drunk on fruity, girly drinks.
Because once you're liquored up, the fun begins!

hahaha.

what's up with canadian rum?!

how do you drink your rum, am0n?

lxy, Monday, 5 November 2007 01:39 (sixteen years ago) link

amon, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:43 (sixteen years ago) link

http://www.rum.cz/galery/cam/vg/pussers/img/vg~1.jpg

amon, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

not boring if it's what you like though, eh? if i liked coke i'd probably drink rum and coke, too. instead, it's soda-lime for me.

(tru confession: when i first drank rum i drank it with TAB!!!1 LOLOLOLLLOOOOOLLLL!!! probably why i hated rum for long time??!)

(uhh, that makes me seem v v old, doesn't it. but i guess i am, so....)

i think we had a different kind of pusser's before, but not that variety. jergins, do you recall? i think the name is off-putting.

lxy, Monday, 5 November 2007 19:12 (sixteen years ago) link

amon, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:07 (sixteen years ago) link

that pyrat isn't quite as dark as it looks in the picture, but it's a pretty good one.

the packaging cannot be denied, though. i'm a sucker for the swank.

lxy, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

i wasn't too taken with the appleton last night. it was fine but not great. come to think of it, the cockspur didn't really do anything for me either. what is going on?

jesus, am i going to have to start drinking bourbon full time??? makes me feel weird just to say it.

Homage to the Cane
With sugar cane having been for so long the lifeblood of Mount Gay, and, one might suggest, of Barbados as well, it's fitting that a great rum should commemorate its qualities. [...]

Consistently smooth. Full-bodied. Unique. A homage to the cane.

cannot recommend enough to try:

rum and soda with lime (ask for two at a bar, cut a quarter for yourself at home).

try cockspur, mt. gay, flor de cana.

report your findings, please.

lxy, Monday, 12 May 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

(by soda she means club soda)

jergins, Monday, 12 May 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

drinking rum with soda water strips away external flavors and leaves you with the four basic elements. the ice matters, but the amount is mostly personal preference. the soda water has to be fizzing, not flat. the lime is an overlooked element. gotta be juicy. good rum makes such a difference with this drink, since it has to stand so tall.

i always said shot glasses were for pussies but i've changed my tune. the shot glass has allowed me to get scientific

jergins, Monday, 12 May 2008 22:39 (fifteen years ago) link

(okay upon a re-read the first part of that is totally obvious but maybe i had to write it out to realize it? of fucking course a lime has to be juicy. of course you don't want flat soda water. i guess this is what i think through as i make them so yeah)

jergins, Monday, 12 May 2008 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i will try this next time.

it does sux! but i am def a fan of the shorty bottles.

i am drinking some of jergins' fancypants el dorado on account of (somehow) feeling like i deserve it because i drove around and around and hither and yon and could not find art primo store and so just came home. so lame.

lxy, Saturday, 30 August 2008 03:54 (fifteen years ago) link

how do i pour it with 0% spillage? is there a trick or am i stupid

should have got something else with it as this is something i'll probably drink every so often. i was eyeing mt gay, barbancourt, 10 cane and johnny walker

amon, Saturday, 30 August 2008 04:00 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe the cloth ribbon is there to catch the spillage and you're supposed to wring it out into your glass

it's a stupid bottle is what.

lxy, Saturday, 30 August 2008 04:18 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe you're supposed to use the saturated ribbon as a sachet to scent your hankie drawer.

lxy, Saturday, 30 August 2008 04:19 (fifteen years ago) link

or maybe i should go post on the victorian board, eh?

lxy, Saturday, 30 August 2008 04:20 (fifteen years ago) link

anyway back to the important topic: you should totally buy mt gay. is tops.

10 cane is super sweet and flowery and it'll make you sugar-high.

Mixed drinks with Tab: According to a reader, Rum and Tab is a
good twist on the classic Rum and Coke. I have formulated some of my
own soda-mixtures including Tab. If you are fortunate enough to be
able to get Moxie and/or Mr. Pibb in your area, here are some good
combinations to try (these are just what I've tried; experiment with it!):
Name
Tab Content
Moxie Content
Mr. Pibb Content

Iced Jamaican Coffee

An iced version of the popular Jamaican coffee cocktail. It's a nicely creamy iced coffee, with the smooth warmth of dark rum and Tia Maria.
Ingredients:

* 1 oz dark rum
* 1 oz Tia Maria
* 3/4 oz heavy cream
* 4 oz chilled coffee
* Crushed ice

Preparation:
Combine liqueurs, coffee and cream. Partially fill a wine glass with crushed ice, and pour mixture over ice. Serve.

amon, Sunday, 21 September 2008 01:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i just made up a recipe:

~8 oz. hot black coffee
1 shot dark rum
half and half to taste

for clarification purposes, what i consider regular mt. gay is the mt. gay eclipse. white label, yellow map.

this one is called mt. gay barbados sugar cane rum. it was $20, shelved with the fancy boozes. it's gotta be their bottom shelf variety, all sugar and edges.

Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy, a careful blend of specially selected rums of age up to seven years, is a fine product whose link with the sugar cane of Barbados is proudly reflected in its character. Not to be confused with generic 'brandy', the product is entirely rum. The name is a legacy from times when the product contained such a high proportion of double distillate that its organoleptic characteristics were much like those of brandy. In some markets, because of legal restrictions, the name 'Sugar Cane Rum' is used in place of the original name 'Sugar Cane Brandy'. (From the Mount Gay Rum website)

No, you didn't misread. The above title claims this review is for Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum, but the label calls it brandy. I just learned the hard way that they're one and the same. It seems that in some states Mount Gay is required by law to label their brandy as rum - either way, it ain't rum, and it certainly ain't good. I used it to remove a nasty clog from my drain, and it didn't even do a very good job of that. The flavor was vaguely reminiscent of shoe leather soaked in vinegar. If you think that sounds appealing, give it a shot. Otherwise, I'd stay clear.

wtf kind of law is that, that's lame

lxy, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, totally stupid law. if it had been labeled properly i wouldn't have bought it.

i have earthshattering rum news

when you first open a bottle and take a whiff, you may not get an accurate representation of what the rum's like

i guess it's like wine. (fuck wine connoisseurs). let it breathe some and then smell, you get a better idea of what it's going to be like

jergins, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 04:48 (fifteen years ago) link

starting from a really light one and then working my way darker to the blackstrap now makes me think that u get drunk in a different way vs. staying with the same thing all night

jergins, Thursday, 11 December 2008 05:54 (fifteen years ago) link

this sounds like a fun progression, but i never acquired an appreciation for rum.

tehresa, Thursday, 11 December 2008 06:11 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, me too except mojitos
but i will appreciate RUM vicariously

t. silaviver, Thursday, 11 December 2008 06:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not trying to talk anyone into anything, but if you were to try one please try flor de cane 5 year with soda water, fresh and bubbly, a nice juicy lime, and ice. one shot. measure it out. make no quick decisions. pass no judgement until the end of the first. by the start of the second you won't regre it

from kira:

hahaha funny story.

so brian got a job at this new restaurant in town and for some reason, they had to train him to serve alcohol even though he is too young. so i guess he was talking to his coworkers and the bartender about drinks and they were talking about drinks with rum and brian said something about a rum ricky. but i guess no one had any idea what he was talking about and the bartender said he had never heard of that drink before... haha so brian felt really stupid i guess, so he asked me about it and i told him that, yes indeed, it is a real drink. but i thought that was really funny and weird....
