20. super stressed w/work, tried buying last minute plane ticket to LA this weekend (that doubled in price overnight), and accidentally booked roundtrip from LA to SF, instead of way it shoulda been. called freaking out i'd have to pay an extra 100$ on top of expensive ticket and guy refunded me the ticket.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

20a. mom paid for half of ticket since it's for "family stuff"

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

21. I have an undate, which is to say: a gurl is coming over, and we are going out for dinner, and romance might or might not be in the air, BUT if I mention the D word, she'll freak out. And even if she's being cute or coy, that's still kinda :\ in these here parts.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

ugh, that's a major :-\

tehresa (tehresa), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that is really lame, dude. one of the more really dumb ways people can be fucked up.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonster), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

my friend kept going on dates w/this chick. he'd pay for everything and they'd be having a good time, and then he'd ask to go upstairs or whatevs and she'd always weird out and they never even kissed. one night in a drunken rage he erased her number from his phone. it was very liberating.

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

How do you never even kiss??? Unless I can't stand the person that shit is decided by drink #6. He must have been crazy about 'er.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

srsly, it's kind of unethical that she let him keep paying if she wasn't going to put out.

tehresa (tehresa), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

Nowadays, when I see a girl I think I might like, I just go ahead and kiss her right then and there. Everything else can be worked out later.

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

NB that is not true.

NB I actually don't know what internet acronysm "NB" actually stands for.

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

NB = nota bene = PLEASE NOTE (and it's in REAL BOOKS)

21a. NB: I'm pretty sure we were going to meet up sometime last year (we've been on/off acquaintances / friends for a few years now), but what was going to be a date morphed into a get together on her turf w/ her friends (which I was cool with), which I believe she then cancelled because she got sick (or gunshy).

David RER (Frank Fiore), Thursday, 30 November 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

21b. Were I not a lazy shiftless not-dating dorkass, I would've either not made the undate, or cancelled the undate by now.

the 90s seem so bizarre and distant now.

funny I was just thinking the same thing earlier this AM, wondering how teh decade will be portrayed both as history and nostalgia. maybe the music will sound better in 5/10/20 years, right now it doesn't do much for me. too many bummer-ish flashbacks both cultural and personal. I've only watched VH1 classic a couple times on Jet Blue and boy was it depressing, but then a)I've never really enjoyed music videos all that much and b)death to all snarky talking heads.

so bottom line: 90s = :-/ the ehhh decade

Possibly triggered by somebody posting Letters to (from?) Cleo on the sandbox sounds thread. now I'm getting misty-eyed over Compuserve (did too have a computer in 94) and the electronica.

driving back from Thanksgiving I heard H&Blowfish on the radio and just started LingMAO @ the dude's shaggy-dog voice. how could this be a hit let alone a rock critic controversy? what an EHH decade.

Actually I think Lmark was serving a useful purpose in her life, since parts of her upbringing were sub-standard for human beings and only as adult did she start to think about why she was acting FUCKING CRAZY and what she could do about it...and Lmark did show her how to ask herself the right questions etc. But the willingness to believe/invest in questionable schemes is beyond me, and she and her boyfriend went to one nutritional supplement/personal training/motivational speaking/business management course after another and were putting all future eggs into various craziness.

54. just had my performance review, this has been the worst year of life as far as work goes. i've been so miserable and unmotivated and overworked and incapable of deriving any satisfaction from my job for so long that i have been putting in the bare minimum of effort. i've almost been ashamed of the lack of effort to produce anything of quality. so back to the performance review; it was the best one i've ever had and they're giving me the biggest bonus i've ever got here (unlike the last two years when i've BUSTED ASS and didn't get anything).

so work hard, be diligent, get screwed.

Otto, it's more likely that you're really getting bonus this year because they didn't do it before -- ie you just had to wait for the reward. Departments that are badly managed are like that, they get behind the 8 ball and then when employee enthusiasm flags, concerned managers know they have to sweeten things up -- usually I think it means that money apportioned for bonuses and things is being diverted to some person/people who are giving the IMPRESSION that they work hard, or are otherwise somewhat unfairly favored...so truly GOOD employees go hungry, so to speak, and then eventually have to be placated.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 December 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

Otto, it's more likely that you're really getting bonus this year because they didn't do it before -- ie you just had to wait for the reward.

i don't think that's it because i know the other person who is under the same supervisor who is trying a hell of a lot harder than i am got screwed again this year. i don't understand this at all. if it's possible to exert negative effort, maybe if i consciously try to screw up, perhaps i can get a promotion.

plus, i know they don't want me here, i came over with my old boss whom they also didn't want but now they're stuck with me so i doubt they're placating me.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah but see, you got pissed off and stopped trying before your unappreciated colleague did -- by next year he'll probably have fucked off, too, and they'll be giving him the make-up bonus. As someone who waited years to be promoted and is still not earning the supposed "minimum" for my position, I can attest: I got a higher-than-average raise this year and you all know how I feel about my job.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

i am going to register for everything in neon colours

i'm just confused by weddings
in my head i think they are a celebration of love and everyone is there for that and it's a great reason for a fun party. but obv this is not always the case and weddings are about a lot of other things. and i guess registry does make things easier? but so many people live together before they get married anyway, they have a lot of stuff. it seems old-fashioned. though i do like presents. i am totally getting married in the woods/desert/rocks-beside-ocean, obv. and a bear/snake/whale is going to do the ceremony.

Purpose of registry: to outfit a new couple with the basics they'll need for life on their own, because they've never kept house before, lived with parents or in dorm, and can't afford to furnish themselves b/c they are young and just starting out. Almost none of this applies to late 20s-and-up modern (urban?) couples anymore! I think that's the distasteful part.

Altho of course there's also the part where yr guests want to feel like part of your new adventure and are happy to contribute...but it's true, sometimes guests don't have money!! I think it should be okay for the couple to request no presents -- the donations thing is awes, I think a lot of (older?) people would be ooged out if you asked for cash, tho sadly that's often the most useful thing.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 30 December 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

my sis and her fiance are musicians and i think are going to ask some friends to play music at wedding/reception in lieu of gifts cause they know they're all poor. but also, i'm sure they will register for tons of shit because she is a soccer mom already (even though she's not even 30 and doesn't have kids... all she talks about is: puppies, babies and home ownership)

have just had a relative get married and yes, all the older women in the family got SO shitty when the couple requested money for a new bed rather than the trad registry list, so a list was set up anyway. Yeah, donations got nixed for me. I didn't honestly expect people to bring gifts though, I sincerely hope you didn't bring gifts thinking I expected them, Laurel!!
