Jon, Yoshida from Ruins has a good new record out with the former guitarist of a band called Tipographica, which was around in the 90s, and played kind of a Zappa-ish avant-prog. (also, there is a new Korekyojinn out)

jw (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not a huge Bondage Fruit fan. They were good, but seemed a step behind Koenjihyakkei, who is probably the band they sound the most like. I have all of Korekyojinn's records -- no vox, instrumental power trio prog and improv, kind of like if Rush didn't sing and only played really complicated, relatively short songs. actually, the guitar sounds totally different than Rush, so that's not the greatest comparison...

"of course i see the appeal, but too many people are talking about something pretty unremarkable"

yeah, i can't help you there. i think the beatles were gods. i'm just not a dick about it like some people.

Sowiesoso re-issue

amon (amon), Friday, 1 December 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

i, of course, AM a dick about it because i like started like two beatles threads over a five week period or something. this was the essential equivalent of going on every thread and saying that whatever artists people were talking about were not as good as the beatles.

xp

tim ellison (tim ellison), Friday, 1 December 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

have i ever told you guys about chris the crazy beatles guy who comes into work? he buys nothing but beatles records. and examines them tirelessly under the lights and at the listening station. he has thousands, wide variety of pressings etc.

he doesn't even own a record player.

ian (orion), Friday, 1 December 2006 05:12 (nineteen years ago)

i am listnening to chris bell now. but it's almost over. next i think it's gonna be lee hazlewood.

ian (orion), Friday, 1 December 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

tim ellison (tim ellison), Friday, 1 December 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

i'm gonna listen to mx-80 sound's out of the tunnel which i bought like a year ago but haven't listened to all the way through yet (used to have a tape dub of it so i have not heard the whole album in many yearz).

I agree w/BB on the Beatles' LOVE because I actually love the Beatles but no comprendo the big deal abt what's basically another re-packaging or reissue. Will people be buyin this thing in a month or two? File it next to the Stones Bigger Bang, maybe.

Feelings run deep on the Beatles, no question.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 1 December 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

no, only talking about LOVE ... and the hoopla over it...its barely even interesting as far as remixing goes.

i was infact wandering btwn my house and the place for dinner last ngiht singing mr. moonlight, i dont wanna spoil the party, and hey, youve got to hide yr love away with a friend last night. no beatles hate from me. just the overwhelming lack of of real understanding of what i suppose is the regular folks who are somehow excited for things like a special collection of banal remixes for cirque de soleil. i obsess over such matters for no good reason. its only the feeling that im missing something....i just wasnt made for these times?

bb, Friday, 1 December 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

great now mr moonlight is back in my head.

otherwise:

the new fly friday: playing "dont worry kyoko(mommy...)" on repeat at my desk from 8:17 this am... of course, i havent been at my desk in a few hours..im sure everyone nearby is having a brilliant morning

(this is a recap of the day i played "maggie may" for 8 hrs only incredibly more annoying)

bb, Friday, 1 December 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

i was listening to the oblivians live in atlanta last night and when i get back today i'm going to put on ...sing 9 songs with mr. quintron and sing along at the top of my lungs because i have an entire house to do it in.

How is the Aperghis, Milton?

the vocals are really, really fucking pretentious but also kind of great. like a really digitally fragmented & edited take on rihm's jagden und formen.

which Artemyev disc? there's a really scary single-disc compilation of his that has 90's new age re-recordings of his 70's Tarkovsky soundtracks, it should be burned

milton parker (milton parker), Monday, 4 December 2006 04:53 (nineteen years ago)

This Artemyev disc. Is this the one you mean? This is the only Tarkovsky comp it lists (it appears on 3 labels).

The Aperghis sounds good. I only have a string quartet + perc, keep meaning to search some more - think there is some vocal-only stuff on UBU.

xyzzzz__ (xyzzzz__), Monday, 4 December 2006 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

I have that Artemiev disc, and I thought it was ok! I didn't even realise the tracks had been rerecorded 'till I got "Stalker" on dvd, and it had the original soundtrack music as an option. The first time I saw "Stalker" on TV, I'm sure it was the rerecorded version (I remember the spooky choir at the end of the train journey section) - it was back in the '80s.

I uses to have a cassette tape somewhere of an artemiev sountrack to a film called "urga" that I thought was pretty nice.

btw there's got to be some other noize boarders geeky enough to appreciate this: when Prince's Black Album came out in 1988 I noticed 'Bob George' used one of the same samples that Jean-Michel Jarre used on 'Diva' from Zoolook, a sped up tape of a woman laughing while talking

and I just figured out where it came from -- it's Suzy Creamcheese saying the word "Bizarre!" on Zappa's Uncle Meat

I think that MBM song was definitely the first time I ever heard her, Suzy's immortal

in the Prince / Jarre thing, I'm guessing that someone stuck that Suzy sample on one of the original Fairlight sample library floppies, because it's pitched up exactly the same amount on both records. Definitely putting this sample on my next album.

bought lotsa cheapo new age records today: john michael talbot, william ellwood, eric tingstad, nancy rumbel, david lanz, ancient future. my new age collection will someday be the envy of, um, me?

also scored a used copy of the dead raven choir 3-lp box set AND a really nice copy of the original triple vinyl carla bley escalator over the hill box. those were nice to find.

i also broke down and bought some...compact...discs. i just needed some stuff. couldn't be helped. new kylesa, brutal truth reissue, the two volumes of white whale singles that rev-ola put out, merry-go-round comp also on rev-ola.

Think I'll pack it in and buy a pick-up
Take it down to L.A.
Find a place to call my own and try to fix up.
Start a brand new day.

The woman I'm thinking of, she loved me all up
But I'm so down today
She's so fine, she's in my mind.
I hear her callin'.

See the lonely boy, out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Can't relate to joy, he tries to speak and
Can't begin to say.

She got pictures on the wall, they make me look up
From her big brass bed.
Now I'm running down the road trying to stay up
Somewhere in her head.

The woman I'm thinking of, she loved me all up
But I'm so down today
She's so fine, she's in my mind.
I hear her callin'.

See the lonely boy,
out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Can't relate to joy,
he tries to speak and

Scott thanks I'll search Cecil's version. Just discovered this. I read there was a production of the The Connection starring the musicians on the Freddie Redd LP, "playing themselves" i.e. junkie jazzers. The music's nice, succinct swinging hard bop.

i'm kinda blown away by "all my friends" in that "whoa, now i wasnt expecting you for dinner" sort of way. still getting my head around this thing in general. "sound of silver" is pretty great, but may not sound that way the second time through. id say, at this point, that its a fun little record. some real nice sounds, some nice shufflin. but i scarcely listen to or closely consider the "dance musics" these days.

otherwise:
all that neil from ian

vampire can't key cutter

And otto: yes! turpentine bros. have become one of my fave current bands. too bad the LP went out of print before I could grab a copy :\ I guess Bomp won't re-press it unless they go on tour, which seems unlikely.

Last week on top of a self I found 'The History Of The House Sound Of Chicago' http://www.discogs.com/release/57624 , 12 LPs pricied at $25. I had brought in ten of my dad records to trade, records I had inherented that I would never listen to, like ringo star, canned heat etc. I asked the clerk how much I owed him, and he said that boxed set had been sitting there for ages, I can have it as an even trade. It is one of my best finds!

still kind of buzzing from bevin/blevin set last night, so listened to mostly very rhythmic, almost-chaotic stuff today (zach hill/mick barr, damsel, optrum, some steve reich, yoshida/muller/okura erstwhile record)

Tim: If you ever see a copy of it, would ya pick it up for me?

Yes. It was put out after he moved here, so there's always the chance that one will turn up. I found one in a dollar bin here once. Chris Fusetron was selling orig. vinyl copies of these for ages, but I don't think Stormy (he goes by name T. Storm Hunter now) is selling them to dealers anymore. (Don't know if DeStijl is putting it out or not.)

ian, it wasn't difficult to get off the platter, i did the lift with the thumb and slide my fingers to the label thing but apparently when i was putting it back in the sleeve i spilled some of that delicious tonic water/juniper booze/lime juice concoction on it. i used about half a bottle of discwasher fluid on it but there's still a skip.

too bad because side two of that comp is phenomenal.

it's weird, whenever that song comes up on a playlist now and it's not followed by the go betweens i think something is wrong. i have somehow come to the conclusion that the hem song is an introduction to the go betweens song. anyway, no sad bastard music for me last night, i hung xmas lights and played the shit out my stax lps (johnny taylor, rufus thomas, staples singers, booker t, eddie floyd) in preparation to my trip to memphis. i'm totally going back to the stax museum and this time i won't be so hung over that all i do is puke in the bathroom.

you would probably like that kaye album, ian, if you haven't heard it. country byrds + steely dan. and not, you know, SOUNDING like steely dan. i mean that becker/fagen/etc are the backing band. amongst others.

i bet i would like it! but i doubt i will ever see it :(
i got a nice soft/country rock LP by a band called Trilogy today; it's still at work.

right now I'm listening to Compulsive Gamblers - Live & Deadly! Side 2 is just all so killer. They're a band I'm bummed I never saw. Do you like the Oblivians/Greg Cartwright-related stuff Skot?

ian (orion), Friday, 15 December 2006 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think i've ever heard that stuff. they were garagey crypt band, right? the 90's are kind of a blur though, i might have heard them.

scott seward (121212), Friday, 15 December 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

yeaaaaah. compulsive gamblers r more soulful country rock type stuff, but a couple of da same guys.

ian (orion), Friday, 15 December 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

btw scott, apparently i lost the tape i made for you before i could send it.
this was weeks ago and i still haven't found it. i think i am just gonna make another.

i wasn't like a rilly big purchaser of 90's garage crypt-type stuff back then. i LIKED it, you know, but i was busy with other stuff. i did buy jon spencer albums though. up until extra width or thereabouts. then i had had enough. i haven't listened to a blues explosion album SINCE extra width came out! i only bought them out of pussy galore love. same with boss hog albums. haven't listened to those since then either.

a decent reference-point for some of the compulsive gamblers stuff is brinsley schwarz or the band filtered through the eyes of obsessive garage 45 collectors.

didn't listen to this too much when it came out -- loved the booklet, but the room recordings aren't hi-fi and they aren't inviting -- but the recent george cacioppo CD on mode has me going back to the contemporary performances of the same pieces just to try to figure out what the hell he's doing

first new cd i've bought in months:
munk - aperitivo

v/a - Razormaid Chapter 9: the Dub Mix (80s double lp of disco re-edits. has Yoko Ono's 'walking on thin ice' even though it's supposed to have a nina hagen song and has a crazy rocking disco song by elton john. it's on white vinyl which is really stupid because you can't see the lines between the songs)

buncha dollar records
Pulsallama - Ungaway Pt II/ The Devil Lives in my Husband's Body 12"
Eye to Eye - s/t (weird cosmic, jazzy new wave. steely dan like song writing - gary katz producing - with a joni mitchell like singer)
Koto - Japanese War Game 12"
Casiopea - Sunrise (asayake) 12" (weird balearic disco. wife thinks it sounds like elevator music)
Kaoma - Jambe Finete 12" (afro electric)
The Roches - Keep on Doing

hmmm, then i don't think you need anything else! unless you don't have the new harvey milk album. everyone needs that. but it's not experimental. just awesome.

scott seward (121212), Saturday, 23 December 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

actually maybe i should investigate the clean, yr thread has me interested. also interested in the transporter 2.

transporter 2 is awesome. get the clean comp. there must be one on cd.

i wish i could have the harvey milk album inplanted in my brain so that i heard that instead of people talking. i mean actual people. i don't generally hear people talking in my brain.

69 (pete), Sunday, 24 December 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

home for me is kinda mediocre.
i did a crossword puzzle with my dad this morning, though. he is a crossword fanatic. i used to do them a lot more when i used to get the newspaper. now i just do the easy ones in the onion.

my dad's exgf and her two kids and her dog showed up, which i had no idea was happening. so now i'm kinda hiding on and off in the office with the computer. blah blah, swedish food etc. finished all my shopping this morning, wrapped presents etc.

now i'm listening to one of those weird black bean & placenta things. i don't even know what most of it is. it's, like, four albums and two CDs(!!) and hardly any of it is labeled. and it cost, like, 5 bucks new. i've never listened to it. maria bought it years ago. shortcut freaks and yak brigade is pretty much all the info on two of the albums.

scott seward (121212), Monday, 25 December 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

see, now, the black bean stuff, that's the indie shmindie stuff i can take cuz it's all diy jangly feelies/too pure/teenbeat kinda vibe and sometimes weird and sometimes teenypop/tweepop. i like that. it's just that horrible boring generic amerindie death cab crap that is like a plague of locusts to me. or some death cab dude that "discovers" "beats" or some such shit.

69 (pete), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

that's a great haul, pete.

i spent a bunch at newbury comics today, but only a little of it on CDs--
Karen Dalton "In My Own Time" cuz I don't want to wait forever for the LP reissue, and when that DOES come out, I can just donate my CD copy to some worthwhile charity person.
AND the live Sandy Bull disc, which is also great. Yay.

I also got the Wire's REWIND 06 issue to read on the bus, and some issues of comics I missed out on, and season 1 of veronica mars and some movie about Michael Douglas going on a rampage. Then I went to the thrift store and bought a sweater and a bunch of VHS tapes, mostly Star Trekky in nature.

bb (bbia), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think New York City to Central Jersey might be the best radio strip in the country - you've got WKCR (Columbia), WFMU, WNYU, WNYC (NPR), WPRB when you get far enough south/west, the Pacifica station when you want to get radical, and even some of the commercial stations ain't bad - WBLS when it's music and not Wendy Williams, Hot 97, that classic rock station at 104.3, etc.

I've listened to it a few times. It's good! I don't know, though, I feel so overrun with psych reissues. My fave Anopheles reish has been the Brigman LP, definitely. I've been thinking about starting a POX Reissues of 2006 thread on ILM, but I'm not sure it's going to be worth it.

Man, London has the worst records EVER!! I've been in some good stores and seen some interesting things for sale, but I've only bought like 3 things because it's so expensive and nothing I'm even excited about. Besides our exchange rate making everything double, things are just ridiculously overpriced. I went to one store where the discount rack started at ten pounds.

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 1 January 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

i am listening to the dead c/hi god people split now! it's great. the dead C side is two tracks from ATP LA 2002, titled "LA Blues" and "LA Confidential." Top form, I would say. Hi God People are pretty neat, also. They give me Hall of Fame/Davenport vibes; kind of drifting repetition into melodies and lyrics. mumbled, spoken stuff sometimes kind of pops up in the background. but then allathasudden they'll break out into a hard boogie riff for a few minutes. got a very hallucinatory feel. From Melbourne, apparently. I wonder what their CDs are like, but AFAIK they never got any kind of US distribution? I should check Eclipse.

I didn't expect to find crazy deals, but I also didn't expect to find Chuck mangione records for $20. The one good thing about it is that the stores are pretty nicely organized. Most stores have a kraut and a library section and one store in particular (intoxica) was pretty impressive. Tons of soft and hard psych, acid folk, amazing jazz, and post-punk. If I were rich I'd go broke there.

It's also weird that I haven't listened to music in over a week. I'm getting my fix watching either 'the 50 biggest choons of 2006' or '100 best girlband videos ever'. Arctic monkeys (who'd I'd actually never heard till now) vs. Spice girls. And who the fuck is this Lil' Chris? 15 year old pop punk kid with plugs in his ears. Fucking brits.

when i was over there in May my hotel was right near Intoxica and the original Rough Trade. I remember the former had Bush of Ghosts for £20, which is about $39 American. I got that at WFMU Fayre for $8. suffice to say i didn't buy any music in London.

yo ian, which Nicodemus? he is really patchy. I'm partial to "Spacechild Squall" myself. some real bad ones in his catalog tho, tread litely

where wings take dream (booyaa tribe), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

the ones i listened to today were spacechild squall, better art music, and Antennae Moonlite. They all seemed decent.. better art music had a weird, funky prog/psych kind of feel to it. much more "together" than the other two, which just projected a kind of basement rock/loner/downer vibe.

ian (orion), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

right, see i think "Better Art Music" is the one I just couldn't get into ... i'm way more into the loner/downer stuff. or uh, REAL PEOPLE (!!!) as it used to be called!

where wings take dream (booyaa tribe), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 06:02 (nineteen years ago)

hrrrmmm. realness. such a dicey subject, these days. i would venture a guess though, that perhaps jandek is more real than nicodemus is; having something to do with cultivation of image. but i guess i don't know enough about either artist to figure that one out...

ian (orion), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

i think i meant that the other way around, actually. nicodemus being more real than jandek.

ian (orion), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 06:14 (nineteen years ago)

haha .. I don't think either one of 'em is necessarily more REAL, i wuz just mocking the designation "REAL PEOPLE" which ya usedta see in the vinyl catalogs all the time. as in, REAL PEOPLE PSYCH. a Tom Lax fave. I couldn't give a shit what the motivations of Jandek vis-a-vis Nicodemus are, I love 'em both. Jandek way more though.

heck, i've only been listening to Little Feat for two days straight anyway

Power pop single of the year, hands down. Jesse from the Carboners (with Dave Carbona and a couple of other non-Carbona sideman) hits us off with three well-executed and well-written Rickenbacker-pop diamonds so surpringly good I almost wish he was doing this full-time instead of that other band. The title cut is something any one of the Nerves would have been proud to have penned, and is on my short-list for song of the year. Actually, it seems a bit more early Jam-like than any US act, and the band seems inspired a bit more by UK songsmiths like Lowe/Weller/Costello, which could be why a fairly non-powerpop guy like me is digging it so much. Not really wimpy at all, with a strong voice, nicely played and laden with hooks. "No Rest (For the Wicked)" is particularly reminiscent of early Elvis C., something I can always get behind. If I'd known how good this was gonna be I would've bought a dozen and given them out as Christmas presents. I give this one an eleven out-of-ten, an A+ and positive feedback on eBay. How can the Douchemaster possibly top this release? Scum stats: 75 only on white, the rest on black for the normal people without a record collecting disorder.(RK)

Willie Nelson's Greatest Hits (& Some That Will Be)
this is pretty awesome, and is more or less my entry point into WN's oeuvre (I've also heard Pretty Paper. And my dad used to play the album with "Pancho & Lefty" when I was younger, but it has been years since I heard that, and I never took it seriously back then anyway).

Am I safe in assuming that I should try his Columbia albums next? Or is a greatest hits the way to go?

Lingbert (Lingbert), Thursday, 15 February 2007 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

check his Atlantic albums: Phases & Stages is his masterpiece concept LP and Shotgun Willie is hodgepodge w/great songs. Yesterday's Wine on RCA is klassic too. Red Headed Stranger is his best on CBS, after that you're on your own.

i'll give that a shot. also, i'll try listening to it first instead of in the middle of a bunch of other records. i went to play my kajun ss record last week (2 weeks ago?) and there's a giant trivial pursuit slice of pie piece that cracked off the vinyl. ;_;

scott seward (121212), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

dave's got it...some people called that a sell-out, maybe because it has the least amoung of lo-fi wanking on it? Strangers of the Universe is classic. I am also partial to the Admonishing the Bishops ep, and although it's all over the map, Wormed By Leonard includes most of their earlier stuff including such essentials as Hell Rules, Leaky Bag and the greatest song ever written, Narlus Spectre.

dan selzer (dan selzer), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

someone brought in all their spectrum/ear stuff to the record store and even though i KNOW i don't need any of it, i kinda want to get all the EAR stuff. i only have the one double album with the owsley song on it. which i dig a bunch. they have 4 0r 5 of the ear releases used. including an ep that i actually sold on ebay a long time ago. they might actually be better to have on cd anyway cuz i could just lie around and drift on, um, memory bliss or something. don't think i need the spectrum stuff they had there. jessamine split. silver apples split. i already have soul glide divine ??? whatever it's called. i love that album. i even own a gel-pack copy! i still need a copy of first spectrum album. i stupidly sold my perfect vinyl copy like a stupid person. my other fave spectrum is the sympathy for the record industry comp. i love that thing. what can i say, i dig sonic boom. have no time for jason snoozeman though. come to think of it, that double album with owsley on it might be a spectrum release. who can remember?

scott seward (121212), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

hey dan what did you think of Lindstrom

I think I saw you while I was at the bar but you were on yer way out the door

dmr (dmr), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, Forever Alien is a Spectrum record. Unique in Boom's discog. All the EAR wierdo vinyl releases are worth tracking down, like the "Death of A Robot" 9" and the ausgang-covered picture discs.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

the EAR ep that i sold was SUPER heavy. and sharp! you could have cut someone's head off with that album. cool op art sleeve/cover too. and i liked it too, i'm just thinking that long-ass ambient driftage makes more sense to me these days on cd.

this prurient album is just what the doctor ordered. straight up noiseage. exactly what i wanted to hear.

scott seward (121212), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

x-post to skotttttttt

hmmm, didnt know about the sublime freq. record, scott.

im a bit biased, but im really digging the white magic record. i'm sure most people would say its inessential, but i really like what mira does with rhythms and the serpentining of melodies. all in all it gets a bit samey, but im never one to really see that asa bad thing (esp with certain bands) didnt see it on vinyl...have to get that and ghost...packaging is great, but cd sized makes a mockery of it.

bb (bbia), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - do i need that white magic album on drag city? the last one?

it's pretty good, but not AMAZING. that's actually pretty good praise coming from someone who pretty much dispises indie rock. kinda like a more put together, less crazy, more goth, band approach to Cat Power.

i really liked the first EP they put out with the fantabulous cover of Nina Simone's "Plain Gold Ring". that record had more of a joni mitchell vibe.

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 16 February 2007 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

okay, i checked out boom's website, the stuff they have at the store is: Mesmerized, Beyond The pale, Phenomena 256, Vibrations (THAT'S the one i sold on ebay that was so heavy), and there was something else there too, but i don't see it on the website. i'll probably pick them up eventually. no hurry.

dave- re: Lindstrom, I enjoyed it suitable, did some dancing, had some fun, and any enjoyment I had was wiped away by an hour on the coat check line, making me wonder if it's worth digging out the car for the Rapture thing tonight hosted by Viva Radio and others that somebody really should have invited me to DJ at but hey, I don't hold grudges, I just don't want to spend another 2 hours in the coat check line. I'm going write some people about that. It's not just something they have to deal with, I've been to larger venues with more people and less problems with coat checking.

Scott, after you posted the pic of Journey Through The Past I was like wtf is taht and tracked it down. It's really good. Amazing live version of "Ohio" recorded one month after Kent State, one of those moments when a song you've heard a bazillion times gutpunches you out of nowhere with its intensity + confuzed frenzy. The last 3 sides are pretty tasty as the album dissolves into a way-stoned lo-fi aural sculpture made from Neil rehearsals, convos w/ Christians, and marching bands. Love the spooky cover art, too.

Now I wanna see the movie.
