Bringing Up Baby - every film should have a cheetah
Deja Vu - a little less cracked-out than I like my Tony Scott, but enjoyable

I'm halfway through both Little Children and Half Nelson. I may not finish the first one, because it's retarded. The second one is not a great movie, but I'll bite the hype on Gosling (though he was better in The Notebook).

Also saw For Your Consideration. Best thing about it was the fake ET segments w/ Fred Willard & Jane Lynch. I think they took the supersize cast thing too far with this one. And I hope Catherine O'Hara didn't really get botox.

For Your consideration - ambiguous reaction. Pacing - really weird. Fred Willard - comedy gold.

If he'd never made Best In Show, it'd be the best of his modern crop of stuff, though.

Little Children and Half Nelson will both prob be in my top 10 this year, with the latter near the very top.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I picked up Bringing Up Baby at Tower and it's not quite as good as I remembered (or My Cousin Vinny), but maybe it's just the ownership effect. Silver City did its predictable (though rapidly diminishing) Sayles sense-of-place thing on me, and Chris Cooper's Bush impression was tiresome for as long as I resisted compartmentalizing it (not too long), but Danny Huston was novel enough, the costumes ruled most movies, and the girls were pretty in a very uncinematic way.

Amelie was pretty hot whilst threatening the albino, the only not-bad thing about it aside from McKellen.

But even the movie isn't as bad as the newish pre-movie commercials they're running where Ron Howard talks about all the deep, hidden symbols they introduced into the movie, illustrated by random flashes of gold accent. Apparently one of the airline logos was meant to help you unlock the mystery of Mary's cooch.

I watched The Faculty a few months ago at my parents house, the description listed Clea Duvall and Josh Hartnett in the "starring" thing, it was a fairly pleasant shock to find Frodo Baggins, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, Jean Grae, etc etc in it. A fun stupid movie!

Why does the presence of Jackie Earle Haley negate the brilliance of the setpiece in Little Children?

Why does the presence of Jackie Earle Haley negate the brilliance of the setpiece in Little Children?

He negates nothing because there is no brilliance in it to be negated. I'm sorry, jmc, but this is a definitively worthless movie.

I'm sorry, I'll try to be more respectful as per the standards of noize board.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Is this commercially available?

Just released today. The first 45 minutes contain new sequences and eliminated others (the Eiffel Tower scenes, Lois Lane hurling herself into the river). Brando is back as Jor-El. The trouble: Donner, annoyed with The Director (he won't even mention Lester by name)'s "corny" humor, substituted purportedly serious sequences which dissolve into camp.

Yup. And Margot Kidder looks quite obviously younger in some sequences.

OK, this sucked for the most part. I'm ashamed that this is promoted as the definitive version.

Missing: the Eiffel Tower, conquest of the small town, and Fortress of Solitude battle sequences.

Even worse: Donner uses THE EXACT SAME TIME REVERSAL GIMMICK USED IN THE FIRST FILM to wipe Lois' memory. the proposition - the part where ray winstone awakes freaked-out to gunfire and crashes into his bedroom door had me believing that it could be great, but it wasn't, it was good. there was only one part where the nick cave music got really bad but then someone cocked a shotgun and it was over. the cast was sweet and the ending kinda bothered me as it would've been a whole lot more compelling had they made emily watson's character a little more culpable. i like that guy pearce guy, he's good at staggering around looking confused.

the latter part of the proposition really frustrated me. ray winstone's character really fizzled out, and yeah - emily watson needed something else. she's such a strong actress, but her character was so wan.

Lauren (lauren), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

My favorite episode of CYE so far was when they went to the party at Bob Odenkirk's house and he went on that rant that ended with the Tabasco finger up his ass, and LD had to do a double goodbye.

They don't, but I just saw the first half-season of "Deadwood" and was generally pleased, tho it's nowhere as subversive as many anti-westerns of the '60s/'70s (including Blazing Saddles).

when evil brother and sidekick showed up @ ray and emily's house i was like that's kinda heavy they're taking revenge for the younger brother's death, blaming it on ray when it was really emily's fault. then it turned out they didn't even know he died so it was just a big ray fucked up even that dandy douche was right sort of thing.

Slocki, the good thing about the narrative arcs is that it prevents each episode of CYE from being the exact same as the one before it. Toward the end of S1, I was getting tired of the formula, but the arcs gave each new episode a purpose.

manufactured landscapes

amazing amazing doc about photographer edward burtynksy, who's work is mostly about the impact of mega-scale industrialization--huge building projects, dams, extraction etc. mindblowing. opens with 11-minute tracking shot through huge chinese manufacturing plant. film also shows: ship wrecking yards where huge freighters are run aground and torn apart; towns where industry is primarily reclamation of e-waste (huge dumps full of circuit boards), 3 gorges dam project, so huge that when it was filled with water (reservoir is 600 kilometres long) the earth actually wobbled, rivers of bright-red nickel runoff, mining projects that carve huge stepped holes out of mountains.

one of the best movies of the year. and without a DOUBT the NOIZEST movie of the year.

I'm not behind it or anything, but I feel sort of incapable of disliking anything by Linklater (note: have not seen Waking Life). I was hoping he could do the whole movie without getting to the kill floor, though. I mean, it's all fun and games in Cannibal Holocaust when it's endangered turtles and stuff, but these are cows here.

I spent the entire movie trying to figure out who that sullenly pretty, surprisingly good actress was. I was all "she should get more parts," and then I realized it was Avril Lavigne.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 2 December 2006 07:52 (seventeen years ago) link

"I break my noize-sandbox silence to say:
I HEART JULIET BERTO!"

This is a good reason. But..

"I also like her in Weekend."

I hadn't realized that she ws in it when I got the DVD a cpl of weeks ago.

"That said, it is remarkably well paced and nowhere near as tedious as it really should be."

Yes, obv with a broken-down viewing I don't know how boring it would be, and I have lots of patience but once you get hold of the pace in which his movies move at..

Some other things I watched this week:

"Fear Eats the Soul" (really good bunch of extras (2 hrs worth of) on this - Todd Haynes on Fassbinder ws pretty engaging, there is an old interview with the man himself, an ok-ish documentary and a 10-min short).

DVDs from library:

Mean Girls - well watching this alongside "fear eats the soul" I couldn't help comparing the four girls in this and the four cleaning ladies in "fear.."

"Elephant", "Last Days".

Godard's "Slow Motion" - The extra is a short film by JLG explaining some of the ideas behind the film (there is a really funny point he makes toward the end as to how he probably bored the viewer a bit but that's ok bcz its part of the act of creation..or something like that). Didn't know quite what to make of it except I wonder what went on between JLG and Isabelle Huppert..

TV:

"The Infernal Affairs" trilogy ws broadcast over here last week. Taped the last two as I'd watched the first one a few months ago. Big mistake as I couldn't remember the finer details on the first, so the 2nd and 3rd passed over my head. ah well..

Lady Vengeance is my fav of 2006. A buddy of mine thinks its the best film of the last decade.

Broad comedy? Really? It's not like an Adam Sandler film. It starts out darkly comic, but by the midpoint the laughs get drained away by the vengeance/redemption themes. And a great, great performance by Lee Young-ae.

The Koreans have a word "yupgi" - it means something that's simultaneously unsettling and funny, it's an attitude that a lot of recent Korean films trade in. The Korean title of My Sassy Girl was actually My Yupgi Girl - that's a rom-com where the meet-cute entails a guy taking home a belligerant drunk girl after she vomits all over riders on a subway car. Odds are this will not be remade starring Sandra Bullock.

NO, bcs you cannot evaluate a film properly then (ie, my barman friend who though Burton's Planet of the Apes was 'great' stoned. or you'll be s1ockli.

Problem with smoking before three hour movies is the problem of coming down sometime soon after the previews. I don't think THC is really necessary with Lynch, as he's already "there."

Mulholland really is a masterpiece of sorts, but it also reveals the limits of Lynchworld - there's just too much stuff in the way and too much reserve to really get across - so I might argue that the Straight Story, even if a small film, is better because of the Straight-jacketing.

yeah, best thing about Kontroll (broadcast here a few weeks ago) ws the disclaimer, and the producers were forced to put that in. Other than that, they make the most of the gothy-ness of the subway - looks good if you're watching it in the early hours.

Night Watch ws broadcast last week - saw 10 mins and that ws enough for me.

Other things

Cinema:

Requiem - German exorcist movie. This ws great!

DVD sale:

The trial of Joan of Arc (Bresson)

Cries and Whispers
Jubilee

DVDs (borrowed from library):
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind
Fantastic Four
King Kong (Naomi Watts/Jackson)
Dogville

TV:
School of Rock
Assault on Precint 13
Le Divorce - Merchant Ivory thingy w/Naomi Watts and an appearance from Stephen Fry. Naomi attempts suicide and 10 mins later its like nothing happened..

much better than the first one, it entertains on par with the best of spielberg/badham/scott/tarantino, if not donen/minelli/edwards/lester, and if it has little redeeming social value, at worst it's a vicarious luxury vacation with a couple of your casually stylish actor friends.

they're basically equally entertaining. one of the three obviously has nothing else on his mind besides selling something, but even if spielberg has the most redeeming social value, at least john badham doesn't admire aliens (and has a sense of humor).

i saw inland empire a couple days ago, completely loved it. it reminded me of 2046 in sort of being a career retrospective -- all the fetishes lovingly revisited, stripped of any pretense to context outside of fetishization -- and a kind of reward for the faithful. (or maybe it's also like rush playing the entirety of 2112 on tour a few years back because they knew at this point anyone coming to see them would want to hear it.) lots of good stuff all through it, but the closing credit sequence deserves some kind of prize all its own.

Tilda Swinton as White Witch was the least wtf casting ever.

The Science of Sleep. Here it is, what I wrote on my listology entry: "creativity as passive-agressiveness, ugly-beautiful leading femme so as not to distract from directorial preciousness ... my companion noted this was essentially Amelie With a Dick, but since that dick is attached to Gael García Bernal, who I've never before thought was charismatic like this, I allowed myself to hit the snooze alarm a couple times, at least early on."

Finally saw Volver. The sheer pleasure of watching Almodovar unravel and tie (unconvincingly) the narrative outweighed the sense that this was simply ridiculous stuff. I don't know why Penelope Cruz is getting all the raves. She's fine, but every scene with Carmen Maura' big eyes and generous cheekbones in closeup warmed me.

and I guess Fitzcarraldo but if you've already seen Aguirre it can seem sort of redundant (imo)

dmr (dmr), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:08 (seventeen years ago) link

My Best Fiend isn't such a bad place to start, being a mix of Kinskisms and Herzog's commentary.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Fitzcarraldo = movie about pursuing yr dreams and the power of faith
Aguirre = movie about slow death at the hands of a tyrannical madman

Don't quite see the redundancy there. You can't even say that Kinski's performances are even remotely similar.

Definitely start with one of those, and if Kinski's not your cup of tea try Stroszek or Kaspar Hauser.

I love Herzog as a filmmaker, but Herzog as a personality can be tough to take sometimes. I couldn't finish watching My Best Fiend because of him.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

conversely, Herzog the man has an archetypical "good father" resonance in our household. Largely due to his voice-over talents and hi-jinks like this: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/02/werner_herzog_s.html

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 December 2006 21:33 (seventeen years ago) link

In classic Herzog fashion, the 63 year old director stated "Someone is shooting at us. We must go." The interview continued, however, as Herzog's pants became stained with blood. Herzog commented, "It was not a significant bullet. I am not afraid."

The boy picked 2 versions of A Christmas Carol at Blarkbluster last night - the incredibly boring George C Scott version, and Scrooged. With the help of legos he made it through the first ("why did you pick this one instead of the cartoon?" my mom frequently asked). Scrooged (which I hadn't watched in probably 10 years) was a total fucking TREAT though, and he loved it.

The only part of the George C Scott Christmas Carol I liked was the Ghost of Christmas Present's outfit, which the boy described accurately as "ripped off from the Burger King".

NB I realize recently that all this referring to my son as "the boy" almost seems like he is a boyfriend and not a son. Please note this is not the case.

By the way, Morbius would hate the Siskel Film Center if he lived here -- not because of the theatre itself, which is pretty good (first time I went was for a Frederick Wiseman retrospective), but because Siskel apparently only went to the theatre that now bears his name three or four times while working at the Tribune. Ebert's no hoity-toity art-film guy, either, but at least he made an effort, reviewing dozens of films there over the years.

my expert opinion on art school confidential - that jody made me watch last nite - taken from the drunk thread on ile:

okay, yeah, that wasn't very good. it starts out with promise! goofy art school/college premise! the smart-ass friend had promise. the dude from my name is earl had promise. but it just...i don't know, deflates. the murder thing, the cop thing, eh, kinda sad really. ends up not being very funny and not that great a story. and the ending is just horrible. i had high hopes for it at the beginning when it looked like it was just gonna be a rip on art school. reminded me of philly. and malky's whole speech was a great intro: "you should just drop out and go to banker school or website school". oh well.

-- scott seward (skotro...), December 24th, 2006.

plus, it wasn't even biting/savvy/cutting enough about art school! the kinda cursory gallery/beatnik chick/school observations were pretty lame. it was a comic, right? maybe that had more depth.

-- scott seward (skotro...), December 24th, 2006.

plus plus, you don't really know ANYTHING about anybody. it's so broad. which works fine if it's slapstick or completely non-linear or if a movie just LOOKS cool, but this movie was completely story-based, and nobody was really anybody, just blank canvases ironically enough.

Savage Island is supposed to be really good:

"An at times fascinating redux of Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes, Jeffery Scott Lando's zero budget Savage Island deals with the problem of the middle class intruding on the demesne of primal man: digging plots on prime moonshine acreage, desecrating woodland gravesites, and working out their petty marital squalls against the backdrop of struggles for survival and the instinct to progeny. Shot on a terrible-looking digital video, even the format speaks, like The Blair Witch Project, of the sort of arrogance that technology breeds: forgetfulness of the savage immediacy of the Natural just on the borders of civilization and superego. (The tragic effect of a cell phone and its subsequent execution is surprisingly smart and surprisingly piquant.) Its acting forever on the verge of embarrassing, its locations "found," Savage Island also reminds of the zero budget frights of the seventies with its ability to evoke a feeling of irreducible filth and a bone deep discomfort. It works because it doesn't aspire to be much more than a straight reworking of the Deliverance dynamic--the logic of people defending their homes and aspiring for eternity through children (the child peril lifted almost whole from the Craven film), the idea of families at war with one another over land and litter remains ever vital and, handled with the disarming immediacy of terrible video, something that deserves to be respected as a statement about man, culture, and how they don't often make 'em like they used to. *** (out of four)"

The Family Stone - Rachel McAdams is bonerific in Dino Jr. t-shirt and indie-rock/librarian hair (Diane Keaton, too!), but when Craig T. Nelson is the second strongest cast member...

Miami Vice - never a good idea to let Mann do a 'director's cut.' Or maybe it just didn't hold up well to a second viewing/on a tv, it seemed kind of flat. Fewer 'whoa'-s, more 'omg I can't believe that Colin Farrell line made it into the movie'

milo (milo), Monday, 25 December 2006 07:20 (seventeen years ago) link

The Descent is brilliant right up until it becomes a horror movie. Trapped in cave with no way of escaping your bitchy sister and her stupid friends is far more terrifying than evil cave-dwelling things.

milo (milo), Monday, 25 December 2006 07:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't believe you rep for 'domino' incessantly and are criticizing 'miami vice'! :D you should seek out the theatrical cut (dunno why mann fucked with it). i love how it drops right into the action in the nightclub and cuts out suddenly at the end. it's got some cheesy bits obv but it's pretty ace overall. the skull-capping of the wite supremacist in the mobile home was the most obvious CGI headshot i've ever seen, though.

Not For Use as Infant Nog (A-Ron Hubbard), Monday, 25 December 2006 07:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked it (a lot) in the theater.

I think Mann just screwed the rhythm adding footage and re-editing, and it just doesn't look as cool on 32" instead of a cineplex screen. He doesn't seem to realize his strengths are in the economy of words/action - so he tacks on a three-minute speedboat scene to set up the nightclub, and the Havana excursion gets lengthened and there's one hilariously bad music cue to kick off a sex scene I don't remember being their to start with.

milo (milo), Monday, 25 December 2006 07:54 (seventeen years ago) link

i hunted down the theatrical cut dvd at best buy, you should as well if you can. i think it's one of the few places stocking it (amoeba, borders, used dvd places all seem to have nothing but the 'director's cut'). the strength of the movie is in it being totally economical and not overexplaining anything. i liked it more the second time around, most definitely.

bohren un der club of gear (bohren un der club of gear), Monday, 25 December 2006 07:59 (seventeen years ago) link

it wasn't so much in this one that they showed the aliens as much as that they looked too boring. they were way too similar to the critters in independence day.

the 50's WotW had some genuinely creepy aliens in it, especially with those crazy tri-color camera eyes!

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

so does everyone else who agreed with me upthread, apparently! it would be nice to see spielberg end a film in a completely non-obvious manner for once. it's not like he can't do it, but i guess why hint at something when you can go the hallmark route, or in the case of that hilarious sex scene in 'munich' the 'passionate collective soul video' route.

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm not gonna argue too much about spielberg because the guy's got skills and has made some excellent films, he just doesn't quite respect the audience enough to end his (recent) films without spelling everything out.

i know, i know, the rat. but i'd rather have an obvious joke than obvious sentiment.

i really love wotw and munich and schindler's list and much of saving private ryan, but i always imagine how much better they'd have been with better endings (esp. the first two, schindler's couldn't have been too much better and spr had more probs than the ending).

saw chronicles of narnia -- great. saw inside man again -- all the parts that are about nyc (conversations b/w cops, translating the wiretap, etc) are great, the heist stuff only soso. saw kiss kiss bang bang -- no. i'm not willing to cede any possibility of cleverness to "la culture," at least not in that vernacular. saw children of men tonight -- so so so fucking good. the best made movie i have seen in a very long time. it was bizarrely such a director's statement. and clive owen is so goddamned good that i'm almost ready to forgive him for i'll sleep when i'm dead. also got an hdtv and an hd dvd player that came with king kong so the good hour and a half of that, too. dude who plays the vain movie star who's the coach on friday night lights is awesome. let's get him more work.

speaking of documentary, i had some serious issues with Manufactured Landscapes, which i saw recently. in some ways i really loved it for what it showed, things i'd never seen before, portrayed artistically, capturing the scope/enormity of a landscape. however, though i know it was based on an art project, i thought it would go beyond that, be more political, be, well, wider in scope. i don't know, the photographs are pretty great in a sense but at the same time i feel a distinct lack in them. mostly because i think the photographer isn't all that empathetic to the 'human element'. and/or he's just not all that smart/intellectual?

anyway, i was supposed to watch little miss sunshine tonight and then i just ended up writing an article about my favourite shows of 2006 and now i don't know if i can go through with watching the movie. so maybe i will just keep listening to music and write something about manufactured landscapes.

***** SPOILERS *******

did anyone else sympathize with the pageant judges when they tried to shut down the girl's dance sequence? it was actually kind of disgusting!

Yeah.

Not For Use as Infant Nog (A-Ron Hubbard), Saturday, 30 December 2006 23:11 (seventeen years ago) link

The movie is basically Vacation meets the Little Miss Springfield episode of The Simpsons. Sprinkle in a few Proust and Nietszche mentions, and you have a "sleeper indie hit."

Not For Use as Infant Nog (A-Ron Hubbard), Saturday, 30 December 2006 23:14 (seventeen years ago) link

agh i keep thinking about it! and mostly i'm upset about the actors and what could've been.
yes, the dance scene was cringey, even if i didn't side with the judges, who were supporting another kind of icky anyway. it was made even worse by the heavy-handed 'lesson' about what, about sexuality? about pagentry? family support? not being ashamed of oneself? good lessons, sure, but, UH

I liked the IDEA of Greg Kinnear's character but they could have made him a lot less over the top. Alan Arkin did his best with the dirty grandpa schtick, but the writing felt a little forced, and it was an even bigger mistake to write him out of the movie.

Actually, my favorite thing was the test pilot kid. I found him genuinely funny and convincing.

Eric, what about Armond's crazy "Bush as America's coach" passage.

I couldn't tell if he was noting that idea or advocating it. In any case, a bit whatev to him.

I wanted to see John, the superprivileged super-snooty guy in that group of three, but he refused to show. He probably realized how badly he was coming across compared to the realer real lives of the others. I hope he shows up in 35-42-49.

He does, but [VAGUE SPOILER] he's kind of an opportunist about it.

The Sacrifice doesn't add up (I had some complicated theory about why the guy had to act anyway even if not necessary.. eh.. probably overthinking) but has a few nice set pieces.. the documentary about the making-of is neat b/c the burning house at the end didn't work on the first take and they only had one more chance to get it right. Stalker is far better but damn, does it go on and on and on..

Silent Hill (well, the first 45 minutes) - KIND OF REALLY BORING. Not enough fucked up monsters. Dyke cop in leather is hawt tho. Also apparently someone gets skinned at the end so I am going to have to finish this at some point.

Curb Your Enthusiasm season 1 disc 1
Eyes Without a Face (YOU GUYS I AM SO EXCITED 4 THIS 1)

Watching tonight probably:

yeah i watched that w/my parents when i was about 15. (we rented it on videodisc!) sex stuff majorly awkward. after the gun scene my mom was like, "um, you know that's not normal sex..." and i was all "DUH, mom!" (don't know what she was worried about, we didn't even own any guns.)
