There's this ONE Cuban sandwich place here right in a fucked location (next to redneckest of redneck bars, directly behind a Kmart) that has a drive-thru (you have to call orders in though), and I swear I think it's name is simply Cuban Sandwiches. 88. went to weird textiles factory district b/c i heard about a sale on matt&nat ('vegan leather') bags and holy shit if i didn't get the bag i've been wanting for so long and that will also hold my laptop if nec. it is deep turqoise with green/olive zippers and it is Classic and was CHEAP. also got new wallet. it is pink with green/olive zipper.

89. then i found this shop that was selling department-store quality, brand-name tights and nylons/stay-ups for SRSLY $1/$2/$3. i bought $12 worth, including a pair that match the new bag!, and i am set for winter. i felt like i stole things today.

90. then i walked & talked with this older french-cdn dude who said something to me in french, which i half understood, and what it turned out to be was "this weather/rain is ass" but in french it's funny. i don't know. we had a conversation about being funny. then i got on the bus, which i didn't even have to wait for, it was just there.

we have something up on our myspace (triceratreetops) but it's from late summer and is quiet/pretty. what we've been playing live is bass/drums/synth and more involved and loud, yet still pretty in parts. we're going to put more of that up on the myspace. the show last night was recorded, so we'll see how that sounds. will also probably make a real site. because i guess we are a real band? yes!

116. i worked a symposium on the 65th aniv. of pearl harbor today. there were all these survivors and historians giving presentations. it was actually way interesting. then all these old japanese dudes walked in and i thought that they were japanese-american vets, but it turned out they were japanese vets! like the actual dudes who flew the planes and dropped bombs on pearl harbor! they gave thier own presentation and at the end insisted that all the other japanese vets in the room come up on the stage and then asked all the american PH survivors in the room to come up on the stage and shake hands with all of them. it was totally unplanned and really cool to see all these 80 year old dudes who were trying to kill eachother 65 years ago tearing up as they looked into eachothers eyes. i got a little teary-eyed too. it was really cool.

yeah, dude's name is Jim Leavelle and he was a PH survivor, and then went on to work at Dallas PD.

other cool, slightly more cheesy story from today's symposium:

118. there was a lady who was a 10 year old navy brat in 1941 and was at a "Jitterbug Contest" on the military base the night before the PH attack. the band leader knew she was a very good jitterbugger, but knew she didn't have a partner so asked the crowd i some young gent would come and dance with her. a uniformed sailor walked on to the dance floor, danced with her, and the two won the contest, each taking home a trophy and never even getting eachothers' names. (no doubt a HUGE thing to happen to a ten year old girl in 1941). the attacks happened the next morning and the little girl survived, lived on Oahu during all of WWII, and went on to live in the Southeast. She always wondered if the serviceman she danced with survived the attack and if so could she one day reunite. long story short, she finally tracked him down, alive and well in 1998, (they had been living 15 miles apart for a few decades) and at the 60th anniversiary gala in 2001, they danced the jitterbug together for the first time in 60 years. they were both in the room as me today while she told this story and will dance the jitterbug again at tonite's 65th aniv. gala.

both this lady and jim leavelle are being covered by NBC this week, so there's going to be stuff on nightly news and today show on wed and thurs. probably.

ya rly! I wasn't drinking enough water (as it was too "boring"), I'd get myself all gassy on sody pop, fruit juice is OK except I'd go thru 4-5 bottles over the course of the workday (omg the calories), and, um, Sobe is expensive. dressing up is fun! i have dressed up like 4 times in the past 5 days! i am getting tired of it though and today wore most comfortable dress and decided a hoodie went with it fine. which was all a good choice b/c basically i spent the day 308. mildly drunk (this is my good drunk level, i think!) and 309. high, partly because my 310. new cute glass pipe i got for christmas! is the greatest. and yet i still managed to make 311. 1006. Got almost an entire set of upper- and lower-case wooden type from antique store in Grand Rapids!!! No numerals or punct, sadly. Had to search through about 6 giant trays and pick out letters one by one, but no "e"s or "k"s AT ALL even though I found about 5 "q"s. Which means someone took all the missing letters for monograms or signs or something, damn their eyes (a word I cannot stamp with my new letters, alas).

I don't know what size officially, the lowercase letters are about an inch high with some ball serifs (a, j, r) and the rest squared off. Short and fat, the exterior of the o might be a full circle. Have to "what's that font" it later. Especially awesome: the cut of the Z/z, where the inside corners are cut into negative balls in the same proportion as the a/j/r.

So it's similar to a wide Latin except the serifs are bracket-slab instead of the pointy ones. Identifont matches it most closely to the Linotype Egyptienne Bold Extended -- these are VERY squat and fatty letters! Oh god I'm in love. I will go back tomorrow and search and search for my missing letters (e, k, A, B, E, J, K, M, Q, R, X) and assorted bits. And good old mums has an old type tray somewhere.

(every sport has its own intricacies, and yes, football is an extremely difficult sport to follow and understand properly--or at all, knowing the scores and who is playing isn't exactly the same thing as "following" and "understanding." It is an extremely strategic sport, and players need to know hundreds upon hundreds of different plays and looks and options just to play a single quarter. Coupled with the fact that there are idiotic, drunken, abusive fans in all sports--indeed, my nastiest experience was at a baseball game while I've had nary an incident at a football or hockey game. But, there is no point to this conversation.)
