the triumvirate of what local radio DJs up here see as the quirky Scottish one hit wonder, remaining oblivious (no pun intended) to the rest of each band's output. I wish they'd put Strawberry Switchblade's Since Yesterday in the same category :-(

acrobat (acrobat), Thursday, 15 February 2007 23:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Del Amitri are (were?) pretty much a really good singles band, aren't (weren't) they?

Is that the one that goes 'And as I sit here, alone, oooo-ooo..'

Ha, I just spent too long trying to sing that to 2000 Miles by the Pretenders before realising you'd posted that suggestion yourself and you were talking about Strawberry Switchblade. So, yes, that's the one.

Hasn't there been an offshoot Virgin Radio station for the more guitar-y, indier stuff, branded as more 'edgy', presenters droppin' their aitches and all that? maybe that's all razorlight and joy division.

I can safely say that from my days when we had Virgin on in the office, I never heard a song I hadn't before. Not once.

bidfurd (bidfurd), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:38 (seventeen years ago) link

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Friday, 16 February 2007 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

mid 1998 and quite a few years after it got a lot of play between ronan keating and six pence none the richer. also the amazing titanic remix which was basically my heart will go on with bits of dialogue from the movie badly dubbed over the instrumental bits to tell the story of the film. i think it was the most requested song ever or something.

it's no king of rock 'n roll but it does crop up occasionally. obviously some of these are less popular these days... a bit like

66. Shawn Mullins - Lullaby
"she grew up with
the children of the stars
in the hollywood hills and the boulevard
her parents threw big parties
everyone was there
they hung out with folks like
dennis hopper, bob seeger, sonny and cher"

youtube users say:

74. Charles and Eddie - Would I Lie To You

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Saturday, 17 February 2007 00:22 (seventeen years ago) link

this thread has explained british music to me. britpop brought the word "indie" into the light and the men in marketing used it to give the heirs to del amitri some "credibility". like fuck will snow patrol ever write a "roll to me" though.

acrobat (acrobat), Saturday, 17 February 2007 00:38 (seventeen years ago) link

This thread needs Don't Stop Me Now by Queen and lots and lots of Abba on it.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Saturday, 17 February 2007 01:22 (seventeen years ago) link

don't let me stop you now

acrobat (acrobat), Saturday, 17 February 2007 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, I naturally don't listen to UK radio a lot, but I am pretty sure "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Good Vibrations" are staples there like everywhere else. And they are still marvellous no matter how many times I've heard them.

Geir Hongro (geirhong), Saturday, 17 February 2007 17:46 (seventeen years ago) link

do you like del amitri?
