• Most likely a 2011 record
• Probably came from a publicist, so it's not like some Hanson/Fag Tapes cassette rip
• Subterranean noise with digital lunges. Like a Pan Sonic meets Kevin Drumm? Suffice to say, I can't Shazam or CDDB
• I uploaded #mysteryrecord to my computer on February 9, 2011 at 8:55 am

Shazam wasn't much use, tried three times, came up with:

Mike Wilhelm - Devil's Gate
Haak - Pulling Strings

and incredibly Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens - Right Here, Right Now

Billy Dods, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

I hope that Zac & Vanessa tune is a Jesus Jones cover. </xhuxk>

jaymc, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

i like it! i have no idea whose it is.

sarahel, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i have no clue although i didnt listen to much noize in 11

the list of releases in feb large enough to merit a publicist has to be p small tho

є(٥_ ٥)э, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

it sounds vaguely Spencer Yeh-ish or Core of the Coalman-like, but both of those dudes play violin/viola - so not either of them

sarahel, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

i think it's this:

Tracklist matches, but came out in 2004 so I wonder why a publicist would be mailing it out in Feb of '11.

i like the idea of blind reviewing albums

Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

'most likely' / 'probably' xp

Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

silvana mangano, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

it's nice, prefer it to the other menche albums ive heard

Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

have you heard 'glass forest'?

є(٥_ ٥)э, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:44 (twelve years ago) link

dont think so

he is prolific

Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

lol yes

you might like 'glass forest' i think, its on important and probably easy ish to find online

є(٥_ ٥)э, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

Ok, that's definitely it!

I bought a used CD at a record store and uploaded it to my computer and forgot to put in the metadata!

thank you silvana! How did u figure it out?

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Thursday, 29 December 2011 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

i actually put the first three track times into google ("5:53 7:09 4:52") on the offchance that it would hit a site like discogs where they list track times for releases

i didn't think that would actually work in the slightest when i tried it, but there you go

silvana mangano, Thursday, 29 December 2011 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

this year's 'guts' by daniel menche is really good folks.

sisilafami, Friday, 30 December 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

I tried to do the same thing silvana but without the quotes and all I got was a bunch of timetables.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Friday, 30 December 2011 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

xpost

i like guts but not as much as other menche stuff. i wonder if DA FORK et al is gonna pick up on it since its on Mego and has a press push

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Friday, 30 December 2011 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

im not sure being on mego has counted for much with them since 2003

Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Friday, 30 December 2011 21:57 (twelve years ago) link

i think p4k in partic has backed away from stuff like menche over the last five years i dont think they partic care abt experimental music anymore?? (xp)

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Friday, 30 December 2011 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

CARETAKER #20

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Friday, 30 December 2011 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

yeah - it seems pretty much relegated to Marc's column and the late lamented Altered Zones

sarahel, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

uh, EMERALDS and ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Friday, 30 December 2011 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

geez, who am i kidding? i think i've looked at "da fork" maybe 3 times in the past year?

sarahel, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

and one of those times was to read a video game article my roommate thought was stupid

sarahel, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:05 (twelve years ago) link

it took them forever to start covering emeralds and dan's stuff under opn is hella mnstrm its not like they were fucking w/ his weirdo gameboy edits

i mean maybe yr totally right i dont read their site this is just the sense ive gotten from ppl who have tried to get their records covered and by stuff i see here on ilm but like, i cant think of single impt sound collage/experimental/drone/avant release that theyve gotten behind the way they used to push like mille plateux second raters...

also anyone w/ the caretaker record as their token 'outer regions' pick on their eoy list clearly isnt listening to much of it cmon

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Friday, 30 December 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

this is all really stupid tho because yr 100% right its hella more likely that they (and other generalist msntrmer blawgs) will review s.thing on editions mego than something on important or blackest ever black or the tapeworm or w/e

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Friday, 30 December 2011 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

editions tapeworm, svp

Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Friday, 30 December 2011 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

have they gotten behind anything on mego lately? I'm guessing something on spectrum spools if so.

alan, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

genuinely curious but also don't feel like googling

alan, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

just the last emeralds record and the one opn put out before he started software iirc.

and also iirc most of the spectrum spools stuff got reviewed/praised on the altered zones stuff rather than p4k proper?

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Friday, 30 December 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

oh duh, of course. returnal and does it look like i'm here. those still don't really feel like mego to me.

alan, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think the label really matters, opn & emeralds are much easier to listen to than menche.

sisilafami, Friday, 30 December 2011 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

^^ v. true. also i dont think there was much on editions mego for ppl to rally around... maybe the mark fell record? i reall liked the evil madness lp but i dont think many other ppl did...

spitballing here but whiney if yr still reading this: doesnt it also make more sense to run reviews of like 2 chainz and beyonce than of a hecker cd + book release just for like, pageviews or w/e? like wouldnt it make sense for them to move away from covering that stuff just in the abstract?

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Friday, 30 December 2011 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

have they gotten behind anything on mego lately?

Bill Orcutt. They've also given positive reviews to non-Mego stuff like Philip Jeck and Fennesz and Mika Vainio in the recent past.

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Friday, 30 December 2011 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

The Prurient record that was BNMd was on Mego and is like the seventh best Prurient record

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Friday, 30 December 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

wasnt it on hydra head??

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Saturday, 31 December 2011 03:07 (twelve years ago) link

the other one

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Saturday, 31 December 2011 05:11 (twelve years ago) link

i hate myself so much for googling this to see if yr wrong

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Saturday, 31 December 2011 06:13 (twelve years ago) link

it doesnt even matter does it? im still wrong on the essential part of my argument

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Saturday, 31 December 2011 06:14 (twelve years ago) link

lots of good stuff on Important this year. i think they covered Van Wissem in a column.... and Vampillia got a full review.

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15594-alchemic-heart

last year they covered Eliane Radigue's 2 reissues, but missed the big one this year (monumental!)

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13661-triptych-vice-versa-etc

i love Important though

ilxor, Saturday, 31 December 2011 08:48 (twelve years ago) link

Van Wissem - the lute player? I saw that guy open up for Lil B

sarahel, Saturday, 31 December 2011 10:30 (twelve years ago) link

not really mystery record on my computer but while I was sorting through my physical music collection before my move, I found a copy of Mos Def's The Ecstatic that I couldn't ever recollect having purchased or listened to. Which might not seem weird to most, but I have a somewhat hyperthymesiac memory of physical music I've bought, and this is like the one album I've bought that I have recollection of how it got into my collection.

if you ain't gonna wash it, i ain't gonna eat it, Saturday, 31 December 2011 21:11 (twelve years ago) link

Van Wissem - the lute player?

yes! that guy
