I haven't seen any talk about Boldy James' "Trappers Alley: Pro's and Cons" on here. I've listened to it maybe 300 times in the past few months. his show here in october was amazing. Let's discuss

The first video is dope. He's not the most spectacular rapper but i'll listen to it. I bet i'll need several listens to get into it.

can we make this a year end goon thread? i'm kinda bummed that i can't pore over the gun sounds thread to remind myself of what albums/mixtapes i still need to hear.

i mean if it's really important to have a dedicated boldy james thread i won't infringe upon it w/ my idea

kinda caught off-guard but i can def. make a 2011 goon list

i really feel though that this year has been less and less about tapes and more about individual songs (possibly true every year but hey)

what im saying is i've never heard of 'boldy james' unfortunately but i'm british and only really hear about rap music thru u goons etc.

v-shasty, Saturday, 3 December 2011 04:22 (twelve years ago) link

Boldy tracks are okay? I like the production but the rapping is sorta monotone flat and undistinguished. Could be a grower.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 06:23 (twelve years ago) link

i think rolling white girl thread is >>> regional thug but w/e

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:45 (twelve years ago) link

its def a grower -- hes def not a flashy rapper in any way. if any of yall are feeling cormega, he's like a midwest version of that

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

my problem w/ regional thug is the implication that as a category none of these artists deserve your attention, or that they're the fucking rap equiv of jerk music or something, or that they are permanently exiled to being less-covered than g-side when imo there's a huge variety w/in that stupid little bubble

but interpret it as me being 'butthurt' even though that makes no sense if you want

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:47 (twelve years ago) link

i'm ok with this being a year-end thread, as long as at least a few of you are willing to discuss /check out the rapper mentioned at the top; his album is one i've come back to a lot

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:48 (twelve years ago) link

'regional thug' is just straight up disrespectful frankly

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Saturday, 3 December 2011 09:50 (twelve years ago) link

who's the producer on these boldy james tracks? it's got a nice premier feel to it.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

well at least the second one does.

Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 3 December 2011 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

"Concrete Connie" is produced by Brains, "I Sold Dope All My Life" is produced by The Plug. I don't really hear the Premier thing on "Concrete Connie" too much. Maybe it's because I know Boldy's from Detroit but to me this is in that same vein of cracked/distorted-street-soul music as Dilla's overall vibe w/out sounding particularly dilla-ish

oh c'mon you are so butthurt.

it is a pejorative when a wide variety of artists are lumped into a category called 'regional THUGS' while certain particular artists are put into noble categores like 'hard working weedheads' and 'blue color rappers.' im angry about the lack of respect shown by the chart for history & for perspective, that doesn't make me 'butthurt' & any time someone is angry you guys throw around 'butthurt!!!' like you've scored major points

yeah i'm as shocked as anyone. on his record there's even a cool kid guest verse (an asher roth one would have been distracting but i don't really have a problem w/ michael rocks, i actually really liked "cell dope" from earlier this year)

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

also fwiw i disagree that regional thug = has a big following, it's obviously true of a few artists on there but it isn't the case of boldy james particularly -- i mean he has fans, but not like the jacka does where he can live off regional money (at least not yet) nor do i see why having been smart enough to develop a scene regionally makes one a 'regional thug' as if its a permanent albatross to be hung around their necks

i kind of agree with this. more than anything using 'thug' perjoratively in this context attempts to dismiss gangster rap as a whole as dated or irrelevant; in a sense maybe it is, given what's popular on the charts and judging by what's getting the high-profile critical love

your line here is that omg its just a dumb spin chart, that's what i'm saying you're wrong about -- everything you've ever written is just dumb music writing too, if you want to go by that logic. this serves to create a narrative about THE STATE OF RAP and if you don't see that then maybe you shouldnt write about music

fwiw deej as someone who listens to mostly LOL CHILLWΔVE and like, ambient drone, the fact that the REGIONAL THUG bubble included a wider variety of rappers (both in style AND quality!) and is thus more insulting than other bubbles like DESPERATE BENEFACTORS and GUYS WHO THINK ITS 1993 is legit baffling to me

i mean: roping a bunch of disparate rappers under one bubble can come across as implying those distinctions are trivial, not worth listening for or caring abt &c &c &c but its hard to see the term REGIONAL THUG as an actual textual insult and also every other category does the same thing, in an effort to make a point abt diffusion/popularity? so it seems weirdly parochial to care so much abt this one bubble, i guess, or to make such strong claims abt its intent/effect

well, i dont think it's the only problem w/ the chart if you were wondering, its just one that i brought up that these guys chose to harp on. i mean, when this first hit i criticized other stuff too.

the point abt diffusion & popularity would be a good one if it didnt seem like it was intent on making certain artists also seem considerably more significant than i think they are to most hip hop fans, like it doesn't just pull the magnifying glass wayyyy out on certain strains of hip-hop (and lump those strains together) but it also zooms way in to the pt where you're talking about non-entities like smoke dza as if he's even worth a data point like this, while other artists are left off of the chart entirely

i'm not sure what the 'such strong claims' i'm making about its intent/effect are; i criticized it the way i would any piece of music journalism that seemed particularly wrong headed to me

i knew m@tt would like the boldy james "pumpin gas" track, that shit is like ground zero 90s rap-a-lot shit, down to the standoff storytelling rap at the dice game that is so straightforward on a narrative level ("he shot (BANG BANG) I shot (RATATATAT) -- as you can see i cold smoked his ass") and yet the rapping itself is not in any way cartoonish

"E-40 ft. B-Legit - 43"

Yeah thats my sleeper pick of the year, my most listened to track on any of the Revenue Retrievin series. B Legit is pure muscle on that.

although i halfheartedly defended currensy from whiney on this thread (and "this ain't no mixtape" is still >>> his releases this year) ive totally had the same issues w/ both him & jacka this year

although i still like the alchemist/currensy tape the most
