i liked j-hud's first album! it wasn't, you know, consistently great but its high points ("spotlight", "my heart") were excellent, and kept me coming back in a way that little on the second managed to

first album was not bad but it was definitely in many ways a misfire and worse than that forgettable. by comparison I Remember Me is just a murderer's row of some of R&B's best songwriters/producers doing quality work (give or take a Ryan Tedder).

it is! so much better than i was expecting, i was not particularly looking forward to it based on how parched of ideas the last one was. kind of feel blige's reluctance (or just lack of interest) in committing to a single style or aesthetic makes it less satisfying as an album but there's this fantastic doomed stateliness about the best tracks here. "mr wrong", obv, is an amazing song once you get past drake (i just fwd through his verse now, can't even take hearing his voice). i guess my other favourites are

the robin thicke album is also pretty good on one listen - it mostly sticks to one mood, this kind of lilting, light-touch, bossanova-tinged seduction soul, but it does it really well. and it's not as if this year's fêted r&b releases aren't all about doing one mood over the whole album too. the oddest moment is "never give up", which apparently samples an orchestral piece that's based on traditional mexican dance

only thicke would think to call one of those soft, light songs "dangerous" though

Why did I just realize Anthony Hamilton is performing nearby tonight (aww man, too late for me to change plans and go)...

the last thicke was a little too heavy on cartoony bossanova slow jams, but i will definitely check for this one because something else is still a minor classic to me

oh it definitely doesn't add anything particularly new to the thicke aesthetic, apart from "never give up" and a kind of saadiqy retro exercise at the start that he pulls off pretty well. i think the thicke persona is becoming more palatable to me over time though, can't quite put my finger on why. at this particular juncture an album that's so listenable is rather welcome.

i like it too -- it's still goofy as hell, there's a hilariously odd but kinda fun protest song at the beginning -- but yeah it's very sunday morning, borderline jazzy background kinda music -- the song w/ lil wayne is the one that really stands out, oh and also there opener is 'something else' style soul -- i'm glad that there's no "shakin it 4 daddy" style songs on this tho

It feels pretty new to me. It's a much more contemporary record, by his standards. Everything about it, from the songwriting to the production, is just so immediate. Definitely the best soul record I've heard all year.

I know I have cloth-ears b/c aside from happily listening to low bit rate radio sets, my only conscious response to the apparently-unlistenable poor quality of the Dawn Richard album is to turn up the volume on my earphones.

This is why while I agree with lex that dynamic range comprehension doesn't really bother me I decided long ago not to have a dog in that fight, my opinion is inherently unreliable.

i've listened to low-bitrate & poorly compressed stuff; I do have to overlook it though, consciously; part of my enjoyment of it is almost like, I'm hearing what the song could have been with better mastering

sometimes its so bad that I can't listen at all, but that happens more often in genres (pop punk, red hot chili peppers) that I don't really listen to

the only example i can think of right now where one is engineered like soup and the other sounds pristine is the LEP Bogus Boys record vs. the freddie gibbs record. anyone who doubts that it affects how experience the music should listen to those back to back & tell me honestly that the LEP wouldnt sound a hundred times better with better mastering

i mean if you played some random song out of a computer it would be hard to just guess the kbps off your head, but if you play a true 128 vs a true 320 out of a computer (through decent speakers/headphones) the difference is p obvious

okay I'm listening on my nice headphone setup at home - there is little to no difference, maybe the bass is fuller (probably more amplified on speakers)

I have resigned myself to slowly but surely falling in love with Elle Varner, despite her overt obnoxiousness.

she is both annoying and hot in the tradition of ilx's favorite cliche bomb, but when the radio's on and i can only hear her wretched caterwauling only the latter matters.

The way she over-sings every note is either glorious or insufferable, mood depending. There is no middle ground. "Only Wanna Give it To You" is kind of a thin song, though; "Refill" is a much vehicle for her to go completely nuts in

part of my problem is that "Only" sounds exactly like that Jazmine Sullivan retro breakbeat song from last year, except she knows how to oversing in a good way. i haven't heard "Refill" but i suppose i should give it a listen since it's never fair to judge an artist by one song (two songs, on the other hand, totally fine).

Prepare for instant revulsion, then gradual, reluctant infatuation. I imagine dudes who crush on Zooey Deschanel feel the way I do about Elle Varner.
