I watched his stand up. It was not funny.

Only thing worth the time was a Tracy Morgan story, but you know, that is more because of Tracy than Glover.

"Freaks and Geeks" was actually alright, in a kinda lol @ nerdy guy trying to be Weezy way, but I heard Camp and good god is it awful. Like every other bar has a tumblr reference and songs are full of lines about how he doesn't brag about his Emmy. I love the dude on Community and find his stand-up to be decent, but please lord do not cancel his show so he has more time for this.

35. Childish Gambino – Camp

48. Drake – Take Care

I'm not going to go to bat for Glover because let's face it, a large amount (if not all) of his rap persona is tied up in being as corny as humanly possible. I really like the "Bonfire" video, though.

OH NOES, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

OH NOES, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

I think the worst of both worlds is that two minute interlude thing on Camp where Glover does his best to channel Drake by singing over a string section while whining.

it's weird to me that for being a comedian, his music is incredibly humorless. like, i'm not saying he needs to be doing weird al shit, but his self-crucifixion complex is so off-putting. like, his music isn't even as funny as das racist, let alone, like, ludacris (at least when he was good)

finally, someone has the courage to stand up to the overwhelming musical force that is childish gambino.

he's gotten good reviews and sold big numbers for someone on an indie label?

v-shasty, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

lol n/a, I thought for sure you were linking a negative review that was using Tiananmen Square as an analogy

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

the review was funny but dude is an "actor/rapper" with a stupid name that people have been mocking since he turned into a rapper. no one really likes his music. it's like zinging dr. morbius, it's kinda fun but too easy to be satisfying.

n/a, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

i guess, i don't know. he just sold 50,000 albums in one week, so some people like his music.

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

OH NOES, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

basically n/a's point (if he actually has one) is that the review while, funny, was pointless because nobody actually cares about childish gambino or thinks that his music is good. i think there is ample evidence that both of those things are untrue.

v-shasty, Friday, 2 December 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

I bought because my wife asked me to when she saw it was out, she hates it more than I do.

also i will stubbornly and steadfastly insist that no one likes his music, despite any and all evidence to the contrary

i do wanna contribute for real tho that we were watching his recent comedy central performance and it was very poor. some of the material was funny, and we laughed a couple times. but this guy wrote on one of the tightest, funniest sitcoms of the last bunch of years, and is hilarious acting on Community, but just could not consistently put it together on the stage and maybe p4k is onto something that he's very insecure bc he really just seemed to lack confidence and experience in the standup. very nervous seeming.

tbh I have a good amount of empathy for him when he expresses frustration with disconnect between his experiences in "black" and "white" America since I've felt a lot of those some emotions and frustrations and it's not really something you're going to understand unless you've gone through something similar, but when he starts talking about "eating Oreos like the white girls that be blowin' me" I have to tap out

Also guys, speaking of terrible lines - for those of you that didn't read that OTHER Childish Gambino thread, this is real lyric of his:

"I said I want a full house / they said, 'you got it dude!'"

This is not clever by any means.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 2 December 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

And I do think it's important that we continue to point out the creepy misogyny that is buried beneath this "aww shucks I'm just a nerd into pop culture" demeanor.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 2 December 2011 23:02 (twelve years ago) link

I think it's kinda clever! Intertextuality, man.

Prior to hearing this album I'd generally been a big fan of Glover via his television work, so I really was inclined to want to love this stuff, but its terrible on a couple different levels. I'd be willing to overlook some of these clunkers, but I still couldn't get past the weird obsession with Asian girls, the rape jokes, and the awful production.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Friday, 2 December 2011 23:03 (twelve years ago) link

I think there are def indefensible clunkers but there are also lines that are more clever than lots of hiphop lyrics

and I'm sorry but this guy did not invent creepy misogyny in rap music

iatee i think the main beef is that this is being sold in certain quarters as "different" and/or "better" than regular ol' hip-hop because it's being made by an overly self-aware nerd on a sitcom, despite the fact that plenty of rap has featured and does feature crappy rape jokes, crappy jokes in general, awful production, weird hyper-defensiveness over perceived status, dumb outfits, etc etc etc.

strongo:

yeah I can dig that and like I said I have heard a total of 1 childish gambino songs and the beat/production was so awful that I can't imagine wanting to hear another. I do think that 'sitcom-watchers approve of this but not things exactly like this by people who aren't on a sitcom' is a fair critique.

but critics seem to be harping a little too much on the lyrics - which aren't flawless or anything but there's still some pretty clever things here and there and imo some of these lines might be quoted as great if they were by a goon-approved rapper. it's not that hard to find crass rhymes or dumb jokes in hiphop and I don't see a lot of hiphop reviews that cite every single dumb line on the album. people who hate this guy are holding him to another standard in the same way that people who like this guy are.

iatee, Saturday, 3 December 2011 02:07 (twelve years ago) link

he's clearly a witty guy with a flair for wordplay, but that kind of thing requires different filters and different sensibilities for different contexts and artforms. being a 30 Rock writer doesn't qualify you to make a rap album anymore than being a dope rapper would qualify you to write a sitcom.

Mr. Stevenson #2, Saturday, 3 December 2011 02:32 (twelve years ago) link

i think the question here is what is this guy bringing to the table? good lyricism? no, and btw, he's a comedian, so his jokes shouldn't be shit. is he bringing anything from a production or songwriting standpoint? no, obviously. is he bringing a new point of view? he wants you to believe that he is, but i think the pitchfork review outlines really well why, no, not even that is novel anymore, without begrudging black males that may identify with him.

v-shasty, Saturday, 3 December 2011 02:37 (twelve years ago) link

and as far as holding his lyrics to a higher standard in terms of quoting them and stuff in reviews. his music trades totally on two things: his point of view and his punchlines. that's it. he's a joke writer at heart, not a musician. if you don't fuck with childish gambino's lyricism, then what is left? i could say that his punchlines hit at the same rate as 2 chainz or drake or lil wayne, but even if you don't dig those three guys lyrically, you can still often enjoy their music for other reasons, be it their collaborators or on a pure pop music level, or whatever.

i do wanna contribute for real tho that we were watching his recent comedy central performance and it was very poor. some of the material was funny, and we laughed a couple times. but this guy wrote on one of the tightest, funniest sitcoms of the last bunch of years, and is hilarious acting on Community, but just could not consistently put it together on the stage and maybe p4k is onto something that he's very insecure bc he really just seemed to lack confidence and experience in the standup. very nervous seeming.

tbh I have a good amount of empathy for him when he expresses frustration with disconnect between his experiences in "black" and "white" America since I've felt a lot of those some emotions and frustrations and it's not really something you're going to understand unless you've gone through something similar, but when he starts talking about "eating Oreos like the white girls that be blowin' me" I have to tap out

Half his 2011 stand up was 'hey i'm black and like Obama'.

As a rap fan I don't care about bad jokes or to a lesser extent awkward mysogony if done well or 'appropriately' or 'in character' (none of these seem like the right term but i'm sure you get what I mean.) My big problem with Glover doing it is he presents himself as someone 'above' what 'stereotypical' 'gangsta' 'ignant' 'rap' 'music' to the point where he even has a song called Backpacker, again in 2011. You can't want to be Talib Kweli and make Odd Future rape jokes at the same time and not sound like a massive prick.

I'm not sure if it's that having fame before standup means you're going to be bad at standup. I think it's more that standup is really its own discipline to such an extent that you need to practice and work really hard at it to get a level of comfort and to be successful on the stage. More likely that if you're already famous, you're not necessarily willing to put in that work -- or you'll sub in the stuff you're already comfortable with without developing the new skills. xp

xpost Robin Williams has had moments where he's not "on" and being a scene stealer. And that's usually when he's in an ensemble as well.

Neither DG nor williams have have much restraint, they're always going for the home run comedy moment when sometimes it would've served them better to lay off the shtick. There's also the lapses into bad taste they both share.

Anyway, Derrick Comedy is DG's equivalent of Robin's early stand-up career, Community is his Mork and Mindy, and the next fifteen years of him dominating either movies or tv is going to be like Robin's run in the late 80s and 90s.

rereading this p4k article & wondering if maybe childish gambino doesn't lack self awareness per se but just isn't up to the minute on rap trends? i get the feeling that we're in a whineyesque bubble here, what was for the past two years a trickle of stereogum updates (Beyonce Ass Moved by Grizzly Bear Concert) has only really become a tide circa somewhere between mbdtf & take care. not sure how perceptible the trends ian cohen &c (myself incl) are distinctly aware of are on a macro/college campus level

wil smif, Saturday, 3 December 2011 05:17 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think that donald glover's awareness or unawareness of the growing intersection between rap and indie music has much to do w/ whether or not he succeeds in creating an outsider persona, unless you want to give him pity points for ignorance

v-shasty, Saturday, 3 December 2011 05:19 (twelve years ago) link

i think the outsider persona is more palpable to other audiences, incl ones that share that ignorance. not that that isn't an audience who also share the horrible taste & sense of humour. but in the same way most people hearing Foster the People are unaware of indie dance pop trends of the past three years, probably fewer are aware that it's indie rock artist bon iver mumbling crap eight minutes into a kanye single, or know who lil b is aside from a guy who makes funny jokes about bitches wanting to have sex with him for improbable reasons. and i think the childish gambino persona is considerably more novel if you're not clued into these micro-narratives. not that you're not an asshole if you like this music--but it frames an argument about his Self Awareness around audience groups & the reviewer's nerd knowledge rather than the music itself

i have to say the buñuel reference convinced me its not whiney

є(٥_ ٥)э, Saturday, 3 December 2011 06:02 (twelve years ago) link

rereading this p4k article & wondering if maybe childish gambino doesn't lack self awareness per se but just isn't up to the minute on rap trends? i get the feeling that we're in a whineyesque bubble here, what was for the past two years a trickle of stereogum updates (Beyonce Ass Moved by Grizzly Bear Concert) has only really become a tide circa somewhere between mbdtf & take care. not sure how perceptible the trends ian cohen &c (myself incl) are distinctly aware of are on a macro/college campus level

i think most people here are totally fine with rap records with an insular or outdated aesthetic from people aren't tapped into 'what's popping in 2011' but if the lyrics are constantly positioning the artist as a breath of fresh air from what's mainstream right now then it kind of behooves the artist to know about what they're positioning themselves as an alternative to

The Christmas-themed episode is a musical featuring original songs performed by cast members. After Greendale's glee club members become incapacitated, the study group are asked to join. Despite their dislike of the club, each of them are lured into joining after their vulnerabilities are exploited. The episode features multiple jokes at the expense of the television series Glee.

most of the show is pretty trad character-driven sitcom stuff modeled after Cheers more than anything else, there are a decent number of 4th wall jokes but i don't feel like that's the thing people most like the show for.

no, i think you should do community now

enh whineys basically right that the main demo for community is the sort of mildly overweight office worker dudes who think theyre so much so smarter and edgier than their coworkers cuz they love mnstrm indie rock and finished a whole palahniuk book once. like the kind of dude who wrote a ~hilarious~ and ~scathing~ rant on facebook when he found via an av club review that ppl still release music on cassette and who sneeringly calls like, decemberists fans 'hipsters'

its still a sometimes funnie show tho, unlike p+r

"Microbrew(ery)" is a term that refers only to the production capacity. "Craft" is more about the brewer's approach to how the beer is made. Obviously there's a lot of overlap -- most craft beers come from what are technically microbreweries -- but the terms aren't exactly synonymous. (Some parallels with "indie," probably.)

jaymc, Monday, 12 December 2011 22:53 (twelve years ago) link

Anyway, I'm like a week late to this thread, and I still haven't heard any Childish Gambino -- though I did randomly see last week's musical episode of Community -- but I wanted to respond to this:

Like if you want comedy rap, this is at least a step above like MC LARS HORRISHIT or whatever, but there's a whole school of MCs--Copywrite, High & Mighty, Apathy, Bumpy Knuckles, J-Zone, Celph Titled, Chino XL, even Joe Buddden--that do the constant hammering-away-at-punchlines thing. Sorry they're not ADORABLE and on NBC's Pomplamoose-comedy half-hour sitcom, Tumblr whites.

This makes it sound like people are deliberately choosing Childish Gambino over those other acts. The fact that Glover is on TV doesn't make him better, but it does make him a million times more visible. Most people really don't want to spend a lot of time digging for music they might like, so the guy who's on a network sitcom has a distinct advantage. None of this is Glover's fault. And none of his fans are claiming that he's better than a dozen rappers they've never heard of.

I'm just saying I've never heard anyone in the NW ever use the phrase "craft beer".

And I haven't heard anyone say "microbrew" in years.

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

Seems v. 90s.

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:11 (twelve years ago) link

I heard someone say microbrew on Saturday.

flexidisc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

Note: I am not living in the 90s.

flexidisc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

i have never heard 'craft beer' in conversation ever, have not heard 'microbrew' much but then i don't really want to live in a world where people talk about what they're drinking beyond a "what'll you have?" or "i have some ____ in the fridge if you want any"

Mr. Stevenson #2, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

tumblr brew

t. silaviver, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i haven't heard 'microbrew' in years. now i think most ppl just refer to beer by its name (ala "i have some ___ in the fridge"). honestly with the ppl i hang out with, the term i hear most is 'good beer' or 'decent beer.' like, "i'll get a case of pbr but you might want to get a sixer of something decent, too." esp since now you can get stuff that's like maybe $1-2 more a six-pack than PBR, miles better, and available at the gas station (if you live in some enlightened state where beer can be purchased in gas stations).

i think too if you live some place with a lot of local breweries then the novelty of drinking something other than bud or pbr has long since evaporated and ppl just get w/e they like or is on special

river wolf, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:28 (twelve years ago) link

such a good derail. anyways - i think once people get into a local microbrew (people still say that up here) the tendency is to stick with it, or failing that something equally snobby/expensive.

sir thermo of thinwall, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

Well, all kinds of people like good beer; only certain kind nerd out about it

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

"Craft beer" seems p. widespread to me, from restaurant menus to local media features.

In conversation, though, I think I mostly say it when I'm referring to a bar or restaurant, like "They have a decent craft selection." (Though I might also just say, "They have a good beer list.")

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link
