tell me more about reema major and how she was born in 1995????

dayo, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

and she's Canadian!

Number None, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

she grew up in kansas i thought? only moved to canada two years ago.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:05 (twelve years ago) link

i'm amazed at how mature her voice is, if you didn't know you'd think she was a grown-ass woman - not just cuz she has a deep voice, it's the authority in it too

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:05 (twelve years ago) link

I've been bumping the 'i am legend' reema major tape/album? since lex made a passing mention of it on Singles Jukebox (so thanks Lex) 'I'm The One' is particularly great.

pandemic, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:05 (twelve years ago) link

from how confident she is/the way she raps/the way she looks I woulda guessed she's at least 20! jeez

dayo, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

pandemic, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

Looking at her wiki seems she moved with her family from Sudan at age three to Canada. It does mention her living in Kansas for a bit but doesn't say for how long. I think she's back in Toronto now though

Number None, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

i dunno why i didn't give the new krit a fair shake before. maybe i just wasn't in the right mood when i first heard it. d-_-b "my sub"

furnace mane, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

furnace mane, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

krit needs to do an alchemist style album or something. his productions have been so on point lately.

v-shasty, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

wait, what krit are you guys talking about? I'm only up to Last King 2, which has the awesome 'Hold You Down' on it.

pandemic, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 23:15 (twelve years ago) link

k3vin k., Wednesday, 30 November 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

Last King 2 is just odds and ends. Really looking forward to the album though, if Money On The Floor is anything to go by. His song with The Roots was actually pretty nice too but i don't think had anything to do with the production

Number None, Wednesday, 30 November 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

"212" is one of the songs of the year, it's pretty funny how a lot of rap nerds apparently can't hear the massive hooks and sense of fun which enable people to go crazy for it

lex, what do make of azealia being taken under paul epworth's wing? surely no good will come?

yeah i agree :(

lex pretend, Thursday, 1 December 2011 09:26 (twelve years ago) link

on the one hand you look at people he's produced like florence and adele and he's obviously good at foregrounding their personalities etc and subtlety isn't really what azealia is about amirite, but on the other there's her interest in singing and especially musical theatre and i could see that being brought more into focus a lot more for the sake of wider appeal. cos you don't hire this guy without thinking of those multi plat albums.

dope, goons and thuggin’ in the street (pomplamau5), Thursday, 1 December 2011 10:05 (twelve years ago) link

dope, goons and thuggin’ in the street (pomplamau5), Thursday, 1 December 2011 10:06 (twelve years ago) link

otoh it can't have escaped anyone's notice that she's made her breakthrough with a straight-up rap song. and tbh the "212" beat isn't all that, it's all her (and her personality being more important than her beats goes back to the first banks songs i heard in '09)

lex pretend, Thursday, 1 December 2011 10:09 (twelve years ago) link

'212' beat is 'wearing my rolex' levels of corny fun. i think this is why people go mad for it as opposed to it being a straight up rap song.

tpp, Thursday, 1 December 2011 11:19 (twelve years ago) link

congrats deej btw

tpp, Thursday, 1 December 2011 11:21 (twelve years ago) link

THANK YOU TPP FOR THAT COMPARISON

makes me like "212" even more now

v-shasty, Thursday, 1 December 2011 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

my problem w/ the paul epworth thing is that clearly they're trying to go the nicki minaj route in terms of turning her into a pop star who transcends rap, but nicki was able to do that partly because she had built a fanbase up over a year plus, she had already dropped multiple classic verses and introduced her personality and shit like that. if she went from "itty bitty piggy" to "right thru me" there's nooo way she'd have the career she has now.

the whole azealia thing seems really hasty to me, they shoulda let her breathe a bit. i know she's been in with labels for a bit now but idk.

i liked your yelawolf review jordan, but i think "made in the usa" and "animal" are two of the best tracks. it falls down when yela tries to do the soft stuff himself, like on "the hardest love song..." and "radio" - and actually "the last song", sadly, the verses are amazing but the chorus is so unnecessary

it falls down when yela tries to do the soft stuff himself, like on "the hardest love song..." and "radio"

ha, i think the album picks up a bit when he starts singing himself -- "everything i love the most" is one of my favorite songs on it. that stretch sorta reminds me of the end of the second petey pablo album, tho not as good.

the machine gun kelly song is good cuz it's basically just a flocka song

still baffled as to why he a. starts twice singing rick ross songs b. made katt williams a central focus of his videp

but all the stuff deej used to say about yelawolf being super try hard really rings true for me for MGK, like yela's rapping style is a bit try hard i guess in that it's very technical, but he has a very dont give a fuck attitude imo, machine gun kelly very clearly wants to be accepted on some childish gambino shit

I think j otm about the Yelawolf, maybe even nicer than I was to it.

5 tracks in and I was like "damn what these ILX folk talkin about, this is dope", and then I barely enjoyed any of the remaining tracks.

I hate Made in the USA. worst hook EVER. The rapping is competent in the verses but...it's kind of a corny song to begin with, and the chorus ruins it for me.

re: MGK, I don't think it's a year-end-list track or anything, it's just a more fun song than I've heard from Yela. It's kinda corny but in that pop music way -- i mean the opening, w/ the square parents at the dinner table, thats like, TRL-era video, i kinda like that? its just more fun to me than yela's stuff

what weird about this is more that there's just no single sound for "lowest" common denominator rap right now. like, no snap/ringtone/'swag surfin' type shit that didnt exist at those times either. tony montana trick is ... rap cliche + autotune, which we've already done.

i dunno, the weird thing about that is that being a white rapper now isn't really very novel at all. this isn't to say a white rapper can't be novel or even have a novel spin on being a white rapper, but it feels like being a white rapper is no longer something notable in and of itself.

howzaboutthis lex -- white rappers as a thing obv ain't new, but the majority of white rappers were people like Lil Wyte, Haystak, or Paul Wall, doing Houston or midwest regioned south-sizzurp rap that was mostly only heard by the hardcore hip hop head community....(ok lol Bubba Sparxx but there are still people I know who didn't know he was white, despite the numerous pics of him on the interwebs)

but in the mainstream, there are more of them with higher commercial profiles now than in recent years, ie Yelawolf, Mac Miller, Asher Roth, etc...two of whom dropped major label releases within a month of each other.

when Eminem first dropped, it was kinda like there was an unwritten edict that only one white rapper could occupy the mainstream at a time.

White rap in the 00s was basically people painting struggles and underdocumented lives the same way as black rappers has been doing for years, just through their own lens, whether it was white trash Michigan (Eminem), rural country ish (Bubba Sparxxx, Haystak) or Houston hoods (Paul Wall). Yelawolf is actually a throwback to this and is not what we're talking about

The Mac Miller/Asher Roth thing is dorky white guys bragging about college and privelege (like 90s non-starters like Jesse Jaymes and Big Men On Campus) and their lyrics are about beerbongs and solo cups. When ILXors say "white" about these guys, it's meant to be spoken with the same derogatory tone as "Stuff White People Like" not just the color of their skin

HUSTLA DA =:3 (dealwithit.gif), Sunday, 4 December 2011 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

sooooo you find this kinda-sorta-marketing trend on the part of major labels interesting? there have always been a few white rappers floating aroud. (uk perspective) none of the current lot even come close to bubba sparxxx's success.

look the music crit conversation, and the music industry generally, is driven by very specific voices, which means that certain values are inherently privileged when it comes to deciding what gets talked about (and this conversation, this buzz, affords artists really valuable publicity even if it's not a direct stamp of approval). if we want to talk about my responsibility as a journalist, i consider it my professional duty to look beyond those voices, to unearth or boost artists who may be getting overlooked because of the inherent biases in the structure of the industry. deciding what to talk about, where to bestow your conversation, is a political act, and i absolutely refuse to let a hivemind propel me in that.

of course it's fun to get yr pop culture thinkpieces on when someone gets as massive as lady gaga, and even better if the artists i find interesting are the ones people are talking about, but isn't it just massively LIFE-SAPPING to permanently have to be thinking about boring shit like mac miller just because other people tell you that you should?

But like there may be valuable information gleaned on like why Drake is getting the attention that Me'shell Ndegocello isn't getting. And the only way to understand that is to suck it up and listen to a little Drake. Like, I'll write 16 articles about Big KRIT before i write one about Mac Miller, but that doesn't mean I get the luxury of pretending he doesnt exist.

i have listened to both drake albums, for my sins. rushing to hear them when i'm not a fan would have been deeply weird though.

also another reason i get chippy about it in the goon thread is that this place is somewhere i come because, unlike everywhere else, it's somewhere where people do give a shit about shawnna or young bleed or whoever, where artists don't have to have buzz to get talked about!

you could make the argument that mac miller is more popular than bubba sparxxx ever was -- prob wouldn't be that hard

v-shasty, Sunday, 4 December 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

my take on mac miller is that he should be engaged critically now bcuz he went #1 and is likely reaching the peak of his popularity BUT it also is easy to ignore him since he doesn't have a big single or anything

i was talking about this with deej last night but it's interesting to me that it seems like mac miller seemingly has no interest in entering the popular rap universe. like he definitely aspires for fame and money and stuff, but he's not like asher roth or childish gambino or other outsiders who try and assimilate into popular rap. i mean, mac miller just had the number one rap album in the country and it literally has ZERO features on it! how weird is that? not even a stray taylor gang verse or anything. the only interaction w/ any music outside his camp comes from two clams casino beats and a young l co-production, so still pretty underground and outsider. meanwhile gambino bitches incessantly about how the "real" rap world doesn't take him seriously and asher roth had that drama tape early and had a debut album packed w/ typical guests.

v-shasty, Sunday, 4 December 2011 18:09 (twelve years ago) link

prolly like comparing Edie Brickell vs 10,000 Maniacs in that sense

HUSTLA DA =:3 (dealwithit.gif), Sunday, 4 December 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i man all i know about mac miller is that he's 'down with wiz khalifa' but i have no idea what the nature of that affiliation is or what musical or business ties they have, it seems like he's done a lot without even trading on that very much.

i already regret not just being 'some dude' again (Mr. Stevenson #2), Sunday, 4 December 2011 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

although i mean in those years between "say yeah" and "black and yellow" wiz seemed to kind of build a huge following without much in the way of singles or engagement with the rap industry too

i already regret not just being 'some dude' again (Mr. Stevenson #2), Sunday, 4 December 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

actually back when wiz was doing sold out tours and trending on twitter but it wasn't really clearly whether he was signing with anyone i thought HE was probably gonna be the first rapper to drop a #1 album with no major label or radio hit

dayo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

fyi i wasn't just talking about frat rappers, its obvious to me that having a white rapper in 2011 is for a rap ceo what having an african baby was to angelina jolie

machine gun kelly is a wild & crazy rapper from cleveland and he's totally a part of what's going on here, but isn't frat rap or southern rap. kreayshawn and v-nasty too. there's just a bunch of people paying attention to white rappers this year

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 4 December 2011 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

lex is also wrong because no, it is totally an observable trend within rap, and there's a difference between willfully following your own personal favorite performers down a rabbithole & paying attention to what's going on in the world of hip-hop, you're like in denial. you can't just will things to not be popular by refusing to cover them

I ain't heard the DMX but after reading his latest interview (post-jail release) in XXL, I'm not sure I want to.

Not that he hasn't always been a little nuts (ok, a lot, like the time he tried to commandeer a vehicle by posing as an FBI agent), but it was clear from the interview that whatever little he had left of his mind is gone, and that even the few hangers-on he had are kinda peacing out on him.

Not that he was ever an extremely deep lyricist, but sometimes I'm amazed a dude with his level of crazy didn't have a Gucci-esque meltdown in the early part of his career.

on one listen it kind of came across like a lupe fiasco without quite so much worthiness (but also without a "kick push"-level track that grabs you by the ear and hooks you in)

jay electronica had like 2 tracks that had everyone proclaiming him the next coming of nas. i don't think its really comparable

i definitely prefer schoolboy q from that crew, but Kendrick's record engages w/ a lot more of the modern sound of hip-hop. I agree that people looking for a ~deep rapper~ have put way more on him than is fair, but he does a really good job imo of stitching together Lupe-ish ambition with a Drake-esque atmosphere and then being very good at rapping. I recognize the two of these things sound like something bad but ... i like it a lot more than Drake or Lupe, at any rate.

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:20 (twelve years ago) link

the jay electronica comparison had nothing to do w/ the quantity of music they've released. it's immaterial.

sockness, just sockness (Mr. Stevenson #2), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

it's definitely like, berkley hippie socially conscious lil b thing but... coherent and pretty well thought out

i think the production is great too, pretty inventive stuff that's definitely in the 'kush & orange juice'/40 shabib universe but not as soundscapey as a lot of that stuff

v-shasty, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

i think people pushed a lot more of that 'the savior of conscious rap' thing on jay electronica than they do kendrick lamar -- i think lamar is still sorta seen as like a non-gangster weed rapper who actually has something to say. idk, it feels different to me.

v-shasty, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i'm probably combining the breathless praise and the imagery of the "HiiiPoWeR" video into an idea of him that is not entirely accurate or faithful to his reputation

sockness, just sockness (Mr. Stevenson #2), Wednesday, 7 December 2011 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

thats relly not what his album is about, and i think the number of songs jay electronica has released is entirely material! it was hype over nothing, whereas there is, in fact, a long & interesting record that kendrick dropped that people are largely responding to, and its a lot more diverse than you'd get from just looking at a couple seconds of the hiii power video

yeah as a technical rapper kendrick is obv preferable to any of the other dudes mentioned in this convo, & i did like a few of the songs on that album but most of them seemed like kind of a mess to me, i really don't get the pac comparisons some ppl (and lamar himself) were pushing, even aside from the laughable implication in terms of quality wrt that comparison i don't feel like he's a very inviting or likeable persona, he's kind of blank actaully

thanks for ascribing superficial stupidity to me but now, just, like, on any level they don't have similar voices; neither do Wale and Wiz. the comparisons both seem bizarre to me.

Kendrick has a much less corny flow and vocal tone, he has more control, his voice doesn't dip up in frequency like ka'naan's does. it's nowhere near as corny. i mean, they might have voices at roughly the same frequency but that's true of tons of other rappers as well.

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

i mean, lamar just sounds cooler and less earnestly eager-to-please than kanaan, and i mean that in the sense of his vocals, never mind his lyrics. Lyrically, Kendrick is also a lot more oblique & less on-the-nose obvious about what his 'point' is, it's a lot more about conveying a feeling than trying to hammer home a message

honestly, I wouldn't carry this argument on if I didn't think that Al would probably like the album a bit more than he realizes based off of the tracks he's sampled -- I can see why he would have that kind of snap judgement, but the record is really diverse & interesting & he's definitely a talented performer, with a lot more depth stylistically than the other artists mentioned here

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Wednesday, 7 December 2011 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

This is no dis to mixtapes. I like mixtapes. But you have some people putting out mixtapes when it really is their album, but [calling it a mixtape] is just a security blanket in case the project don’t perform well.

ha otm

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 8 December 2011 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I hate that shit

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

the branding of actual well crafted albums as if they're free quickie mixtapes is funny but i can't imagine getting actually mad at it, like unwrapping a hershey's kiss and it's actually a gourmet chocolate truffle and you just throw it away in disgust

Mr. Stevenson #2, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

often spoilt by dj shouts and dubious quality though

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

so kind of like the gourmet truffle is melted and a bit of the wrapper is stuck to it

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

except we're talking about the mixtapes that are essentially albums (i.e. less dubious, less shouting)

Mr. Stevenson #2, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

i thought we were just talking about the mixtapes of album coherence/quality? yeah sometimes those are professionally presented but often they're thrown out totally slapdash (GUCCI) (TEEDRA)

sisilafami, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:28 (twelve years ago) link

I just don't like the way "mixtape" has come to be such a sloppily applied, catch-all term. Quality of individual mixtapes is irrelevant.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

calling something a "mixtape" these days tells me essentially nothing about the project.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 8 December 2011 17:30 (twelve years ago) link

is it a collection of songs by different artists mixed together? a collection of all-new material by a single artist? a collection of cast-offs/unreleased songs by a single artist? WHO KNOWS

Scotty Magee, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:32 (twelve years ago) link

Whiney argued to me that Meek Mill is 'boring' which I think is totally wrong, so as an argument, I'd like to link to a promising rapper from Detroit named Fowl (he won a freestyle contest that was judged by eminem apparently) who is totally using the Meek Mill flow on this song, and I think it shows how meek's flow functions (by being a bit more baldly obvious in its message) for listeners & how influential meek could end up being / already is

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rQomhvuYnw

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Thursday, 8 December 2011 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

gucc_ebooks (tpp), Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

I'm just not sure what's so unique about Meek Mill's flow? (Which isn't to say I don't like the guy.)

rennavate, Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

i wouldn't say it's unique, he just brings this very urgent energy to his rapping and is convincing about it

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

exactly. he def has a peedi influence but i think that's more of a general philly sound than it is about him biting peedi

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:29 (twelve years ago) link

would someone disagree if i said he's like a midpt between peedi & freeway?

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Thursday, 8 December 2011 22:29 (twelve years ago) link

not really, big charting crossover singles always top the list. this is either an exceptionally bad year for those & hes being stubborn or he likes some rap songs i consider to be awful. i guess you could argue either side

1. Rick Ross f/ Styles P – “BMF” (Def Jam)
2. Kanye West f/ Nicki Minaj & Others – “Monster” (Def Jam)

'n____s in paris' is not very good at all

gucc_ebooks (tpp), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:38 (twelve years ago) link

all of those are varying degrees of amazing though

xp

i don't dislike "niggas in paris at all" but c'mon at least have the decency to pinpoint the t.i. remix

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:41 (twelve years ago) link

no one cares abt the t.i. remix though. its just the original that's a big cultural moment, which is what that reflects

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 09:43 (twelve years ago) link

the weirdest one to me on his list is the wiz khalifa, which is almost aggressively lame to me, and i don't really get pac div

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 09:44 (twelve years ago) link

i do think, considering the % of disconnected euros (no offense to ilx euros) who might think that, say, G-Side were as big a deal as "Spend It" by 2 Chainz, I get where he's coming from when he rallies around a few major touchpoint rap singles from the year. (although the "I'm On One" omission is pretty absurd)

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 09:45 (twelve years ago) link

oh my god your personal EOY list is not meant to be about "big cultural moments". what is this obsession with liking stuff other people like?

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:48 (twelve years ago) link

why even bother having your own taste? just do a list of that year's nig cultural moments. they were ~important~!

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:49 (twelve years ago) link

*big

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:49 (twelve years ago) link

rallying around bad hip hop singles for the sake of rallying around something is stupid tho. i disagree w lex & i'm sympathetic to the idea of putting something with wide appeal in the top position in theory but if you can't actually find a good song youre just halfheartedly fulfilling some dumb obligation to shit songs that dont deserve it

wil smif, Friday, 16 December 2011 09:53 (twelve years ago) link

the thing is it shouldn't even be an either/or. when you have a song like "what you know", sure the fact that it becomes a wider cultural thing and provides those amazing communal moments that the best pop does enhances it, but it's because it's already undeniably amazing. first time i heard it i was obsessed with it, way before i knew it was gonna become a cultural thing.

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:56 (twelve years ago) link

so weird how everyone always says "g-side has loads of euro fans"?? is this even true?

is 'in paris' really a big cultural moment?

gucc_ebooks (tpp), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:57 (twelve years ago) link

like if i was gonna defend "what you know" i wouldn't NEED to fall back to the "it's popular" defence because there's so much amazing about the music already - that's not the starting point, that's something that gets added on.

"super bass" is kinda equivalent this year for me, but i know some of you don't really feel it, and if you only think it's a 7/10 or whatever i don't see why you should force yourself to rank it higher.

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 16 December 2011 09:58 (twelve years ago) link

u make forming lists sound like some soul-searching pure honest expression of taste tho like its arguably not even normal to care about music in that way--its not like when u hear a song you love youre like "now THIS is the number one hip hop single of 2011"

wil smif, Friday, 16 December 2011 10:02 (twelve years ago) link

um, i do think noz likes all the songs on his list, and i never claimed otherwise.

― degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, December 16, 2011 3:49 AM (25 minutes ago) Bookmark Permalink

you need to recognize context; for example, there's a movement in record collecting known as 'random rap' which is a bunch of dudes who collect late 80s hip-hop that make compilations & highlight "lost classics" that are in reality just watered down versions of stuff actually-popular artists had already done. It starts to impact people's perceptions of history. I think that a critic does have some *responsibility* to not pretend that his 'taste' exists in a vacuum wherein he can just completely ignore the popularity of artists. That doesn't mean always liking them! like, there are many very popular rap songs that didn't make noz's list

i just meant that I think that because for him & many other people writing about rap in the states theres a social element to be considered, and that while some of us might spend a lot more time hunting music online, entirely ignoring the social pathways by which ppl come in contact with v. popular artists is ignoring the artists that are most likely to have large influence on future generations of artists, etc

"bah so hard"/"that shit cray" is the good hook? ok...

btw just remembered that coicidentally song starts off with will ferrell saying "we're gonna skate to one song and one song only", which makes my http://www.threadbombing.com/data/media/2/rap_roller.jpg comparison even more perfect

k3vin k., Friday, 16 December 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

eh. nbombs in paris was a big track this year, and its success had a genuinely organic feel (I think moreso than "Otis" but this is entirely perception). Paris was up w/ racks & tony montana & i'm on one, one of those joints that just takes on a life of its own

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

i think i said to someone the other day that its kind of cute how excited kanye & jay are to have a legitimate hit

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

excited enough to play it upwards of ten times in their recent shows

Number None, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

it's a legit hit? lol

i mean you should remember from a UK perspective there just aren't any "cultural moments" around hip-hop in the chart popularity sense. off WTT, "otis" got to no 28, and the beyoncé song spent a week in the chart, at no 48

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Friday, 16 December 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

i haven't heard ANY of it in the wild, so to speak

so don't you think its useful that Noz's list might seem informed by the way people are receiving it here?

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

i know we all agree about this so this kind of seems like a challop, but doesnt the black hippy crew (kendrick, schoolboy q, ab soul, jay rock) deserve like 90x the acclaim of odd future, when it comes down to it? what are sales figs like on tyler v. kendrick? why are the press so obsessed with the former but ignored the latter for a long time (& while they now follow kendrick, they treat him like a solo star & the trickle-down effect to schoolboy etc. is happening much more slowly than it did for i.e. mellowhype)

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

i compare them because they're both crews with breakout stars from LA, and black hippy are just better rappers period

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

Black Hippy don't really have a hook like Odd Future (being "young", controversial lyrics etc.) did i guess?

Number None, Friday, 16 December 2011 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

but black hippy are young! they don't have the controversial lyrics but thats a plus. they also have better songs

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Friday, 16 December 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

That's why i put young in quotes. The youth aspect of Odd Future was exaggerated cos Earl was 16 but it was definitely a major thing in most of the initial coverage of Odd Future. I agree about Black Hippy being better btw

Number None, Friday, 16 December 2011 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

If you haven't heard Ab-Soul's tape you should. It's of a similar level of quality to Setbacks

i kind of feel like sales don't matter in rap unless something is positioned as a blockbuster make-or-break record for the artist or preceded by a big radio single. like on the facebook sandbox when people were lolling or acting shocked about pusha t's "quickie album that's part 2 of a free mixtape" or w/e not selling much, it's not like when they release his REAL album they won't be saying it's his 'solo debut,' it doesn't count.

Kind of both ways. I could see—I don’t know. Now that muthafuckas is telling me about it—I don’t know. I don’t feel like it has anything to do with race. I feel like people use that word the way I use it. You know what I’m sayin’? If I can’t say it, then basically nobody should be able to say it then, you know what I’m sayin’? I don’t give a fuck!

but yeah if anyone sees any others that have been missed out let me know so i can iron out any bugs before creating the 'gun sounds compendium'. when i do that i'll add in any youtubes that have become invalid by hand.

annoyingly youtube doesn't have an "artist" and "song title" field just a general "title" field. if it did then it would be simple to alphabetize and stuff like that but right now i can't see any nice way to do it.

tbh my assumption was that this was something told sarcastically to a cop by a bunch of dudes who aren't in favor of talking to police

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Thursday, 22 December 2011 08:30 (twelve years ago) link

that's a decent working theory, but i would also have to assume that investigators working a case of that nature are prob smart enough to know if they're being bullshitted about a dude getting killed over a piece of candy

who knows tho

cuz ain't nobody love em so their lives get tooken
locked in cages, have em fighting over cookies
and the lunch trays just happy them days ain't never killed em

cuz kids need them toys where santa claus don't seem them boys
don't seem the girls around here, cuz there's jackboys downstairs
no man with the big bag, just man with the big gat
tryna take his shit back, cuz he feel the world owe him

that the love is there, no mother there, just her and lil brother there
we wash our pain with belvedere and use the drugs they brung us here
and we get high to get by, hot dogs, no rib eyes
with tears drip from red eyes where ends don't meet the deadlines
the DA said she hate me, but i don't understand
when i just rocked a show in front of 50,000 fans
i think that bitch racist, she prolly in the clan
she take her pain out on me, but she prolly need a man
i took my mom from public housing, put her in the sticks

guys "Motto" is so fucking terrible. it's like oh, you figured if Drake did something kind of light and uptempo it might stab through the haze of his aesthetic and be actually fun? nope the joyless tryhard aura just feels even more pronounced.

lol at imogen heap's based goddess status. and yeah deej, he did step it way up. and even his stuff before where he was rapping pretty poorly is way more memorable than that sl jones joint which has kinda slipped out of my mind.

fireman princess (furnace mane), Sunday, 25 December 2011 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

even if the domo-kun mixtape is a chore to get through and i had to wrap my head around his weird anti-flow, i find myself bumping to "pound" and "loud pockets" and "overdrive" all the time and stopped listening to the slj track after a few days or whatever

fireman princess (furnace mane), Sunday, 25 December 2011 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

the anti-flow is way toned down on this new tape tho. it's still there enough to be distinctively him but it's incorporated into a more regular rapping style. and i'm glad he's both developing and keeping a distinctive approach

fireman princess (furnace mane), Sunday, 25 December 2011 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

man i completely disagree that L's earlier stuff was more memorable. SL Jones is like 100x better rapper.

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 25 December 2011 23:52 (twelve years ago) link

young l's were like a notch above beat tape (i still have to hear the new one )

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Sunday, 25 December 2011 23:52 (twelve years ago) link

im unsure whether or not young l's young l music is worth listening to: does the initial awesome reaction to the beat propel you through the next 3 minutes of grating, repetitive rapping? i rarely make it through an entire song & just end up sampling each beat on his tapes

this is prob a big challop but i prefer clams casino

wil smif, Monday, 26 December 2011 06:45 (twelve years ago) link

okay that's retarded

also young l's rapping is fine! it's rarely great but it's often kinda fun

How many days after a period? Started by Tuomas in December 2011 (v-shasty), Monday, 26 December 2011 07:47 (twelve years ago) link

i put that too harshly, i like young l i'm just often reluctant to listen to him for that reason. i think the knowledge of "what could have been" plays into it, too. its not like he has some big hilarious idiot persona like soulja boy, just a guy whos always rapping on his beats

wil smif, Monday, 26 December 2011 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

im just really tired of production-driven rapping. if you can't make a good song out of it i dont care how next level the beats are

joey joe joe junior shabadoo, Monday, 26 December 2011 20:13 (twelve years ago) link

i don't even mean the rapper has to be 'skilled' or charismatic, i just mean that the song needs to be dope & so far I've heard a lot more dope beats than dope songs from L

what do you all think of the touré NYT piece?

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/25/arts/music/white-female-rappers-challenging-hip-hops-masculine-ideal.html

it's...there's just a lot wrong there, surely. it's very simplistic. tying hip-hop so essentially to masculinity seems totally wrong.

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

and i don't think slapping the label "white" on a white australian and a russian jew is that helpful (why are people so reluctant to address kreayshawn's race?)

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

k.flay is not awful but kinda boring btw and i'm surprised people are taking notice of her

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

hmm yeah definitely some wrong in that piece. I don't think emphasizing hip-hop's masculinity-obsession is the main problem tho. The writing is just sort of sub-standard and not insightful imho. The Beyonce line is very wtf, and I don't agree re: Kreayshawn at all, and then there's this paragraph, which is just embarassing:

More skilled and perhaps more interesting is K.Flay, 26, a Stanford graduate and a talented vocalist who uses rhyming as a sonic technique. Culturally she is not trying to push her way into hip-hop; she’s more of an indie rock chick. Her rapping is melodic and semi-sung, and on her most recent mixtape, “I Stopped Caring in ’96,” she samples indie groups like the xx and the Vines and talks about alienation

I am womansplainer hear me roar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

"rhyming as a sonic technique" I mean come on now

I am womansplainer hear me roar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

I did dig that N&C article tho, thx for the link sil

I am womansplainer hear me roar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

i mean i don't think anyone would deny that hip-hop is male-coded, has been male-dominated, and it won't stop being weighted towards dudes any time soon, but to say that it's essentially about masculinity is what seems o_0

failing to address the history of white female rappers who haven't come across as paltrow-style jokes (which i think even paltrow was aware of!) is a bit of an oversight too.

also i think kreayshawn has worked very hard at establishing hip-hop cred!

the paragraph about labelism is half a good point but i'm not sure that labelism is a thing that needs to be defended in such strong terms. the history of hip-hop is as peppered with anti-labelism as brands brands brands.

class unaddressed too?! like, isn't a reason that eminem and yelawolf are accepted their poor backgrounds (cf the obviously privileged middle-class fratboyisms of asher roth and mac miller). kreayshawn and v-nasty don't actually seem particularly privileged to me.

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

also i think kreayshawn has worked very hard at establishing hip-hop cred!

yeah - agree about this and about the class aspect too. like part of the reason Paltrow et al look ridiculous is due to class, it's not just gender and race.

failing to address the history of white female rappers who haven't come across as paltrow-style jokes (which i think even paltrow was aware of!) is a bit of an oversight too.

who are you thinking of here, Luscious Jackson?

I am womansplainer hear me roar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

i wasn't but yeah! luscious jackson, tairrie b, princess superstar, lady sovereign, there are probably more.

(i don't know much about tairrie b myself, only read about her)

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

I think it's still a pretty narrow sample size... Princess Superstar and Lady Sovereign are non-entities over here (and Toure didn't seem interested in engaging with UK hip hop or how it would figure in at all - probably just would have muddied the waters since class/race issues are so different between the US & UK)

I am womansplainer hear me roar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

the earliest example I can think of ESG but they weren't exactly rapping

I am womansplainer hear me roar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:39 (twelve years ago) link

haha i think my basic criticism of the piece is that the waters are muddier than what he describes

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 27 December 2011 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

it is telling that no one gives a shit that he's dropped nbombs on records released as recently as last year

wait people are saying he's the best of 2011? that's just sad. not that 2011 was a banner year for rap or anything.

i've seen a bunch of places talk about how 2011 is like the best year for rap in ages. its b/c so much stuff is online now that no matter your particular taste you can find some corny niche to fit your needs, no matter what the quality. people are stupid imho

I ... guess? I dunno I don't really listen to rap that way. I mean there are certain things that appeal to me but I am not inclined to focus on a particular sub-strata. my fave stuff this year was probably Curren$y, Kool G Rap, E-40 + some other random old stuff I was catching up on
