on the one hand you look at people he's produced like florence and adele and he's obviously good at foregrounding their personalities etc and subtlety isn't really what azealia is about amirite, but on the other there's her interest in singing and especially musical theatre and i could see that being brought more into focus a lot more for the sake of wider appeal. cos you don't hire this guy without thinking of those multi plat albums.

otoh it can't have escaped anyone's notice that she's made her breakthrough with a straight-up rap song. and tbh the "212" beat isn't all that, it's all her (and her personality being more important than her beats goes back to the first banks songs i heard in '09)

'212' beat is 'wearing my rolex' levels of corny fun. i think this is why people go mad for it as opposed to it being a straight up rap song.

my problem w/ the paul epworth thing is that clearly they're trying to go the nicki minaj route in terms of turning her into a pop star who transcends rap, but nicki was able to do that partly because she had built a fanbase up over a year plus, she had already dropped multiple classic verses and introduced her personality and shit like that. if she went from "itty bitty piggy" to "right thru me" there's nooo way she'd have the career she has now.

the whole azealia thing seems really hasty to me, they shoulda let her breathe a bit. i know she's been in with labels for a bit now but idk.

yeah i just mean he doesnt hold my attention & i dont think he's as great a rapper as everyone else seems to, there's a lot of skill to what he's doing but it just doesnt engage me at a gut level

i've found plenty of tapes this year that I really like, i don't think it's stagnant. I just think that most of bloggers are just following the same artists that released good albums a year ago (or longer in Juicy J's case)

like that Juicy J record is fun but so one dimensional & each tape has like 3-4 jams on it at most

I just cant get over how unlistenable that Future record is, though. its like an hour of autotuned half-sung rap cliches

what weird about this is more that there's just no single sound for "lowest" common denominator rap right now. like, no snap/ringtone/'swag surfin' type shit that didnt exist at those times either. tony montana trick is ... rap cliche + autotune, which we've already done.

White rap in the 00s was basically people painting struggles and underdocumented lives the same way as black rappers has been doing for years, just through their own lens, whether it was white trash Michigan (Eminem), rural country ish (Bubba Sparxxx, Haystak) or Houston hoods (Paul Wall). Yelawolf is actually a throwback to this and is not what we're talking about

I ain't heard the DMX but after reading his latest interview (post-jail release) in XXL, I'm not sure I want to.

Not that he hasn't always been a little nuts (ok, a lot, like the time he tried to commandeer a vehicle by posing as an FBI agent), but it was clear from the interview that whatever little he had left of his mind is gone, and that even the few hangers-on he had are kinda peacing out on him.

Not that he was ever an extremely deep lyricist, but sometimes I'm amazed a dude with his level of crazy didn't have a Gucci-esque meltdown in the early part of his career.

jay electronica had like 2 tracks that had everyone proclaiming him the next coming of nas. i don't think its really comparable

i definitely prefer schoolboy q from that crew, but Kendrick's record engages w/ a lot more of the modern sound of hip-hop. I agree that people looking for a ~deep rapper~ have put way more on him than is fair, but he does a really good job imo of stitching together Lupe-ish ambition with a Drake-esque atmosphere and then being very good at rapping. I recognize the two of these things sound like something bad but ... i like it a lot more than Drake or Lupe, at any rate.

the jay electronica comparison had nothing to do w/ the quantity of music they've released. it's immaterial.

it's definitely like, berkley hippie socially conscious lil b thing but... coherent and pretty well thought out

i think the production is great too, pretty inventive stuff that's definitely in the 'kush & orange juice'/40 shabib universe but not as soundscapey as a lot of that stuff

i think people pushed a lot more of that 'the savior of conscious rap' thing on jay electronica than they do kendrick lamar -- i think lamar is still sorta seen as like a non-gangster weed rapper who actually has something to say. idk, it feels different to me.

thanks for ascribing superficial stupidity to me but now, just, like, on any level they don't have similar voices; neither do Wale and Wiz. the comparisons both seem bizarre to me.

Kendrick has a much less corny flow and vocal tone, he has more control, his voice doesn't dip up in frequency like ka'naan's does. it's nowhere near as corny. i mean, they might have voices at roughly the same frequency but that's true of tons of other rappers as well.

i mean, lamar just sounds cooler and less earnestly eager-to-please than kanaan, and i mean that in the sense of his vocals, never mind his lyrics. Lyrically, Kendrick is also a lot more oblique & less on-the-nose obvious about what his 'point' is, it's a lot more about conveying a feeling than trying to hammer home a message

dying @ lil b being a conscious rapperor whatever btw, boots riley weeps

honestly, I wouldn't carry this argument on if I didn't think that Al would probably like the album a bit more than he realizes based off of the tracks he's sampled -- I can see why he would have that kind of snap judgement, but the record is really diverse & interesting & he's definitely a talented performer, with a lot more depth stylistically than the other artists mentioned here

yeah kendrick actually makes an effort to flip new styles in his actual rapping as opposed to his clothes or his twitter brand

the adhd video is really really cool too

Kendrick has a much less corny flow and vocal tone, he has more control, his voice doesn't dip up in frequency like ka'naan's does. it's nowhere near as corny. i mean, they might have voices at roughly the same frequency but that's true of tons of other rappers as well.

i mean, lamar just sounds cooler and less earnestly eager-to-please than kanaan, and i mean that in the sense of his vocals, never mind his lyrics. Lyrically, Kendrick is also a lot more oblique & less on-the-nose obvious about what his 'point' is, it's a lot more about conveying a feeling than trying to hammer home a message

yeah fuck i only listened to dreamchasers the other day and meant to come straight here and rave about that beans verse. he's one of the only rappers than can send shivers down my spine. i didn't really get 'middle of summer' before but it works so well in the context of that tape.

middle of the summer was awesome, it captures a vibe that feels a lot more rare in popular hip-hop right now that used to seem more prevalent

def -- there's something evocative about that beat and him just kinda repeating the song title

verse is dope too, dude is a very storyteller

that track i guess isn't much of a story, but it kinda is -- very macro story

I just don't like the way "mixtape" has come to be such a sloppily applied, catch-all term. Quality of individual mixtapes is irrelevant.

calling something a "mixtape" these days tells me essentially nothing about the project.
