KILLFILE HOW-TO

Message Bookmarked

First, download Firefox.

Then, download and install the Greasemonkey extension.

After you've restarted Firefox with Greasemonkey installed, there should be a little grinning monkey icon in the bottom corner.

Now download the killfile script (mine is Will's script from the old hoonja-doonja thread, with sandbox added). Greasemonkey should pop up with a prompt when you click that link; install the script.

You have to tell Greasemonkey where your text editor is for adding entries to the killfile, so open a new tab and type "about:config" into the URL bar. Type "grease" into the Filter field. There should be a preference named "greasemonkey.editor"; double-click it and enter C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE as the value. Now close the tab.

It's time to add boring jerks to a list!
Either right-click the monkey icon or go to the Greasemonkey submenu under the Tools menu. Select "Manage User Scripts...", select "kilxor," and hit Edit. Add user names (not login names) to where I've put 'That+One+Guy' etc.

Make sure to replace all spaces in usernames with +, and get your letter cases right. If you get confused by a page because everybody else is yelling at some idiot you can no longer see, just click on the monkey to turn him grey again and hit reload.

OK, if you can still read me, please can you now explain to me how to download and install Firefox when you're on a Citrixed system and you have no admin rights to install any software. If there are such L33T haX0rs around here, surely someone has to figure out how to do this.

You don't need administrator priv to install Firefox. I can do it and I am on a similar set up to what you are describing.

There should be a preference named "greasemonkey.editor"

This didn't come up for me, for some reason. Firefox doesn't seem like it works the way it supposed to on my work computer, at home it is always fine but my work one doesn't always run extensions like adblock the way it should.

Well, I can do my work, which is what is important to our sys admins.

My machine is locked down tighter than others... some people can change their wallpaper. The sys admin probably specifically locked mine down tight because he knows I used to be an actual programmer! Ha ha. I can't even set up mine own ODBCs and stuff, which is just stupid, that's how paranoid they are. I have to ask the sys admin to set them up for me, systemwide.

Tom - that's perfect, it was because I didn't have usernames set to display. Thanks for this.

On my PC Firefox 2.0.0.1 Greasemonkey.editor doesn't appear in the about:config thingy but it doesn't seem to matter - you can tell it which text editor to use after you've opened Greasemonkey from your browser.

Okay, I've been trying Andrew's script and no luck, so let's try Will's script. But I have a question. Here's the script:

// ==UserScript==
// @name kilxor
// @namespace
// @description
// @include http://ilx.wh3rd.net/*
// @include http://ilx.p3r.net/*
// @include http://ilx.thehold.net/*

//Put the login names you want to excise in this array like so:
var fules = ['LaughRiot', 'never gets old'];
//And that's it for configuration.

for(var k = 0; k < fules.length; k++)
{
var fule = fules[k].replace(' ', '+');
var posts;
posts = document.evaluate("//a[@href='userinfo.php?username=" + fule + "']",
document,
null,
XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE,
null);
//GM_log('number of posts by ' + fule + ': ' + posts.snapshotLength);
for (var i = 0; i < posts.snapshotLength; i++)
{
var thisLink = posts.snapshotItem(i);
thisLink.parentNode.parentNode.parentNode.removeChild(thisLink.parentNode.parentNode);
}
}

Where exactly do I put the "var fules = ['LaughRiot', 'never gets old'];" line? In Andrew's script, the customization goes at the very end. Is that where I put the line in Will's version, or somewhere further up?

The problem with killfilters on message boards is that they quickly turn you into a special, sensitive, magical princess, while not really erasing unpleasant users from your consciousness: Far too frequently, you realize that you're missing something, which will either disconnect you from the thread of conversation or irritate you to the point of removing the filter.

Far too frequently, you realize that you're missing something, which will either disconnect you from the thread of conversation or irritate you to the point of removing the filter.

I dunno, dude, if you've not found anything worthwhile about the person BEFORE you killfiled them, why would you suddenly want to see if they've developed a sense of humor or some modicum of intelligence or decorum AFTER you killfile them? That argument is nonsense and really if you feel that way and wonder what people you dislike are saying that badly, you are a special, sensitive, magical princess indeed.

No, you see the thread, you just don't see the body of that person's post! The question and everything still shows up, and the responses do as well, and you can turn it off really easily if you really think there is something important you are missing in the "meat" of the question.

I dunno, dude, if you've not found anything worthwhile about the person BEFORE you killfiled them, why would you suddenly want to see if they've developed a sense of humor or some modicum of intelligence or decorum AFTER you killfile them?

It's not so much that you want to see what these folks have said in isolation, but the context of other users you haven't killfiled responding to them just becomes too much to bear. Sure, some folks have enough self-control to ignore these posts, but the very reason people use killfiles in the first place is that they LACK sufficient self-control to human-ignore the primary objects of their irritation.

That's only partially true. I personally used the killfile on two people: one who goes out of their way to start shit with me and friends of mine, and another who actually repulses me with the things he says. I've human-ignored the latter forever now; it's just nice to get rid of him. The former is extremely difficult to just ignore after a while. Using it makes my experience on ILX a lot better. I'm sure you are right in some cases, but it's rather insulting and precious to go around making that assumption.

In the left-hand pane, select [script name] and click Edit. This should open the installed version of [script name] in your favorite text editor. (If it doesn't, verify that .js files are associated with your favorite text editor.)

I assume that's what the part about going into about:config and changing greasemonkey.editor is about. Is there somewhere in there to specifically link all .js files to an app?

The only thing I will crybaby about is that I don't think I should have to install and run a completely different web browser in order to get access to killfile functionality. That is a minor WAAAAAAAAAAAAH, though.

Dan, what browser do you use?

It took minutes to install firefox. It took, like, lifetimes to read "ILX, a plea". Compare and contrast.

Actually I was just wondering how quickly I could read ILX if I kilxor'd Ned, Ally, kate, jaymc, etc.

Ouch.

This is an interesting experiment, but I have absolutely no interest in applying it myself. I am curious if anyone is killfiling me, though, and there's one or two people who I might even wish would do so.
