I'm trying to decide if I have a hangover or if I'm just missing sleep. I woke up at ungodly o'clock to have a coughing fit and never got back to sleep.

Oh, that's a pity, Sub Zero pretty much described the temperature in my office at the moment

Tom D. (Dada), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I just wanted to avoid the Sub Sub references at all costs!

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:27 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a law against these temperatures! Where's the EU when you need 'em??!?!

Tom D. (Dada), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Call Boris! get him to complain to Elf and Safety!

Though aren't you Scottish? You're supposed to be able to laugh at sub zero temperatures and arctic winds! It's Socialist to have everyone the same temperature as outside!

Hi watercooler. I'm feeling shit today. Really shit. Not physical, just really bad ennui. So I'm going home at lunchtime. What can I do to perk myself up? I hate feeling like this. Ug.

Oh, yes, Dada! Ed says he may have bailalaika connections. Will you join in the drone if we obtain one? ;-)

Hi, JB. Sorry you're feeling rub. It's that time of year, there's a lot of it going around. Go home and do something that you really enjoy, that you can really lose yourself in.

I was probably playing mine all wrong. But I suppose you can't really go too far wrong with three strings...

Tom D. (Dada), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I got used to weather a LOT colder in Upstate NY. But on moving back to London, I was shocked by how much colder it could feel. Probably it's the humidity. Or the fact that you think it's not really cold so you don't bundle up the way you would in a Lake Effect snowstorm.

Can I post some more cute pictures, or should I get me to a Shush of Crame thread?

http://www.comedycv.co.uk/boosh/2003-january-the-boosh.jpg

Mmmmmm, cake. We should have had cake last night. But then again, I was stuffed after the pielettes.

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Go home and do something that you really enjoy, that you can really lose yourself in.

... and after you've had a wank, things will look better! Or you'll be sleepy.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't imagine wanking helping. I always feel worse afterwards, as I'm sure everyone does. I only wank when I'm bored anyway.

Cake's a good idea though. Banana cake always makes me happy, I'll make that. I think I've got some bananas that are just about to turn, so perfect for cake.

Somebody's birthday at work, sio I've just been given some saisbury's snarties chosolate cake. ALl bought cakes arew a travesty, but this one is really wrong, like a badly-phrased metaphor.

Oh wait, he likes Jazz. OK, I can live with that. He will have to listen to jazz in the shed and keep it in a cage because I diapprove of jazz running around free.

Anyway, here is a better picture of that dress:

Nice Legs Shame About the Sexism

Tom D. (Dada), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Wanking *can* be kind of a topical anti-depressant. It used to work for me. However, now I'm actually on *real* anti-depressants, it is almost impossible, physically, to wank. Sorry, TMI, I know. There is nothing more depressing than the vague occasional desire to actually, like, wank, and then realising that you can't. But then I pop another pill and feel all shiny and happy again. :-D

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, actually, the one useful thing I learned from my last shrink is that bananas are actually quite good for depression - they contain the building blocks of amino acids that the brain turns into serotonin. So banana cake may really help!

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 15 February 2007 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I always feel worse afterwards, as I'm sure everyone does

Really? Unless you mean in the sense of "a moment ago I was horny and orgasmic, now I'm neither". Though if you're miserable already I can see how it might contribute to a further feeling of deflation.

I love hawaiian shirt paisley, especially in those weird 70s fabrics. I used to have the greatest collection of paisley dresses and shirts, but I've mellowed with age into wearing Liberty style paisley because I think it's more dignified in a person my age.

Oh, that reminds me (eye bending paisley) that I finally brought in the picture of my mural, so I should post it. It's almost the same colours as Julian's shirt there.

masonic boom (kate), Thursday, 15 February 2007 12:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I am no expert on feminine hotttness or not, but I just think that she looks COLD. Like, I want her to put on long johns or something. (This is not a fashion suggestion, or a suggestion of importunity involving JB.)

it could be a beautiful dress, but it just looks uncomfortable.

That didn't occur to me ("you'll catch your death in that, love" or w/e) b/c that's standard winter clothing for women up here in the NE. In summer, women dress up warm, in winter skimpy little short dresses like that. Men are the same - jeans & t-shirt in winter, thick jumper in summer. It's a bit fucking daft, isn't it.

(x-post - no, "that hot" for me being eg louise brooks, but I do think she is pretty, & has nice legs.)

Blimey, would imagine it would be easier to find them as they are DVDs are so much easier to produce, and you could fit quite a few silent films on them. But I imagine there isn't the market.

We used to have a poster of Louise Brooks when I lived in NYC. and Theda Bara over the sofa. We would not have been proper Goth Chicks without them.

You can get a few silent films if you can play Region 1 DVDs (here's the Amazon page for Lousie Brooks). I spent a lovely night over the Christmas period with my crush watching Clara Bow's "It" as we shared a bottle of gin. Fun times.

I loved how The Brits were being hyped-up so that anythign could happen, yet on the night, they were broadcast with a tape-delay to catch the more blantant swearing. But I did get to see Lauren Laverne on the ITV2 coverage, so it wasn't a total loss...

One of my mates was wanting to see them in Glasgow but it had sold out. I've never seen it but he said he could loan me the dvds he has(once I've finished watching the Tom Baker era Dr Who videos he loaned me.)
Maybe he will bring them when he has finished with the dvds of "M", A Clockwork Orange and Goodfellas that he loaned off me about 6 months ago.

I have this sudden urge to do the internet equivalent and just be totally horribly almost comically rude about them - because I know they can't see me.

I'm not *going* to, because 1) that would be childish and I'm an adult now and 2) everybody else would see me pulling monkey faces.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 16 February 2007 09:24 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, I now have a new washing machine. Argos are ridiculous. Neil asked in the shop if we could pay the extra £20 to get them to plumb it in for us and take the old one away. Except person in shop didn't actually put that part of the transaction through (OK, I know, he should've checked the receipt at the time), something I hadn't realised until the guys dumped our new washing machine in the kitchen and were all "bye!", "erm aren't you taking the old one away?" "not unless you paid for us to" "but we did, look here's my receipt" "look standard delivery charge only, sorry love, nothing we can do, blah blah". So now I have two washing machines, one not plumbed in, and will shortly have a grumpy husband when I tell him. Guess what *he's* doing tomorrow?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Friday, 16 February 2007 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link

x-post Aww YOU can plumb it in this morning Ailsa- I have faith in your ability. Don't forget to turn off the water first.

Norm : knackered = HOTT (in guitars). I have to have a Jag at some point.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Don't talk to me about washing machines. Mine's just about on its last legs (it's given up being able to do a fast spin, and I have to wring everything out by hand), so I will be washing machine shopping tomorrow, hopefully somewhere which has one in stock which I can bring home with me immediately for the lucky Mr Unruly to plumb in.

C J (C J), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I could fancy a Jag as well, but that one's maybe a little too "distressed" for my tastes!

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:04 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not my fault though! I wanted to pay someone to do it. I am rubbish at things like that, that's why paying other people to do stuff was invented. I (very recently) drove my car round with tyre pressures in single digits because I can't even put air in my tyres properly (I've been a car owner for 17 years and I can't remember EVER putting air in them, co-drivers always do it), practical stuff is beyond me. I mean, I can put air in my tyres *now* - I've just never needed to. I can do the oil and stuff in my car, I can change a plug/fuse/tyre, I just don't unless I have to.

(xpost to Dr C)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:05 (seventeen years ago) link

ha, that makes me sound like a total "ooh, these menial things are beneath me" moron, doesn't it? I'm not really, I'm just really clumsy when it comes to practical things and I'll rather not chop my hands off/flood the house/electrocute myself/short the whole of West Central Scotland.

Hello thread. I took your advice to immerse myself in something fun yesterday. I had a bath and some whisky, got out of the bath 2 hours after I got in, and slept like a 5 year old (and one of those nice 5 year olds, not a screaming vomiting one). I may have overdone the whiskey though, since I have a bad feeling that I'm still drunk. I haven't acted drunk, so I've just been topping myself up with coffee and red bull, but I feel happy as anything! So yay! No banana cake though, which is a shame.

There's a killfile on here? Brilliant! (I'm hoping that the fact that one exists means that I won't have to use it, since everyone'll cut out the rubbishness cos they're afraid of being killfiled.) Is that how it works? I hope so.

Yes, have fun in Wales. It's nice there, very craggy.

Johnney B's got a system (stigoftdumpilx), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:39 (seventeen years ago) link

x-post not far from Cardiff, but by the sea. Just a short break until Tuesday to reacharge the batteries/stave off the nuthouse.

Washing machines - yes mines nearly dead. It makes an awful noise when it spins and floods once in a while. It's 17 years old though - top German engineering.

The problem with cars is that you CAN drive em around these days and do nothing to them bar putting in petrol. Those of us who learned to drive in crap 70's and 80's cars (esp British ones) quickly found that you needed to be able to fix them like every week to be able to go anywhere. I learned everything I know from a 1979 Ford Fiesta - what a pile of junk. I sound old. Mind you the best car I've ever driven was a 1971 Beetle that the missus used to have - it sounded like a helicopter, but was totally reliable. German engineering again - I wish we still had that car.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:45 (seventeen years ago) link

The thermostat on my washing machine is broken, and it now only washes with cold water. Plusses are the clothes don't fade and the colours don't run, minuses are... don't know. The clothes seem to wash okay, though heavy stains need a rub of Vanish and putting through twice. I just wonder if I need to get a man in to fix it.

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I learned my "get you home" stuff in a '67 Wolseley 1100! High point of owning that thing was when it conked out in Sunderland, being baffled as to why it wouldn't start, until we spotted that the petrol hose had popped off the carburettor! (we were wondering why we could smell petrol as well - is was squirting all over the - in places quite hot - engine) Every time it went wrong, we would be like "fucking useless thing, SCRAP IT", then we'd look at it, and it was so cute we'd change our minds. I wish I still had it, TBH, it's the only car I've owned that I miss.

I am in a very good mood this morning, despite being STILL sick because I had a really good time last night. Sat around with F and J and we drank ale and listened to Hawkwind and talked about Dr Who and drones and why the Grateful Dead suck and it was just great fun. I like them so much, they're just one of those couples who just give me hope for the world.

And F and I worked out some arrangements and some drones and some harmonies (OK, she did all the work, twidding the knobs of the Korg and I just sat there and went "yes. Oh yes. That one. YES YES YES YES YES!!!" until her other half stuck his head down the stairs going "what are you two up to?")

I love those so called 'genuine' things that so obv aren't. I bought a Genuine US Army Water Bottle when I was in my teens. It was plastic with a cloth casing which had KOREA stamped on it. Then when I actually took it on a trip and put some water in it, the word KOREA transcribed to be in water based ink and smudged on the fabric.

And then when I was in Jordan a guy named Ali whom I hired a horse from tried to sell me a 'genuine Roman coin' which was just a stone he'd carved a face on!!!

I took Jason the Spaceamp to that place on Denmark St when it was ill, and they charged me loads of money and it was still not working right when I got him back. Then this bloke who serviced the equipment at the Joint came by and had a look at it - it took him forever to get around to fixing it, but when he did, it was better than new! I have no idea how to get hold of him - or indeed if I trust him to ever get my guitar back to me if I'm not at the Joint every week to hassle.

hey Kate, I have been on fire today, posted loads of threads (you should look) and pissed off Enrique. and I didn't even have to use my AK.....

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:05 (seventeen years ago) link

It sounds easy to fix though. Have you tried just spraying some WD-40 inside the pickupswitch (just a tiny bit). I'd tend not to trust anywhere on Denmark Street. Andy's might be OK.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I have been adding to the nutmeg by eating more little pies. Stoned is exactly how I'd describe it.

Ed (dali), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Ed, soon you are going to have to go to rehab if you don't stop this relentless nutmug abuse.

Dr. C, maybe I should be less afraid of opening it up and seeing what's up inside. I should change the broken jazz circuit switch but I'm not even sure my soldering skills are up to that. Besides, when do I ever play jazz? (Though the jazz circuit is great for that "Cocteau Twins" big full sound.)

Mark H, have you just been saving up threads all week to post all at once? Are you suffering from sandboxitis?

BOXCAR! NO!NO!NO!

Ed (dali), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:17 (seventeen years ago) link

(I love this BOXCAR thing, having no idea where it came from, really). I am excited for tonight, but as there's 4 or 5 hours between soundcheck and stage-time, I'm a bit worried I'm just gonna be hammered by the time we're on.

g000blar (g00blar), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:19 (seventeen years ago) link

x-p You should have a look inside, Kate. I reckon the rhythm circuit switch should be easily replaceable - maybe superglueable even if you have the broken off bit.

Cocteaus sound - I use neck p/u on the 'lead' circuit with a compressor and tons of delay. When you kick in some fairly heavy overdrive too, it does that 'five guitars playing at once' thing where you can hear a clean picky sound on top of massed banks of noise. I like that sound!

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 16 February 2007 12:20 (seventeen years ago) link

What on earth does "BOXCAR" mean? I'm so confused.

I should have done this when I changed the strings the other day (I tried using your method, Gooblar, but it doesn't make sense with Fenders, which have their own string locking systems which make them so easy to change) but was too scared to. I don't have the bit that got knocked off - it needs a new switch.

Oh! And F is totally down with dressing like Hawkwind for the next gig. J is threatening to strip off and dance around like Stacia but we told him only if he wears psychedelic body paint. Then we decided, sod it, the three of us were just going to start a Hawkwind tribute band.

Anyway, what a great hat!

Where on earth am I going to get aviation goggles? Camden Market, I suppose? Or army navy shop?

No, it's actually Ronan's big bro. He is a man of enthusiastic enthusiasms, so I wouldn't be entirely surprised by some Neds, so to speak. And I'll be annoyed if he doesn't play Carter, not least because I'll be yelling for it between every song.

And I am really sorry I won't be at the gig, but there'll be other Gooblar gigs, and there won't be other first nights for this club.

NB ESM founder shorter than me in my 3-inch heels; editor very tall. It. Nearly. Got. Awkward.

Today I am doing the Chasing of the Journalists' Late Copy and batting away requests from some jumped-up gallerist to get copy approval for some artists I'm writing about, which is so not gonna happen. Yesterday was all about "well, X Magazine let us see the text before they sent it off" followed by "We are not X Magazine. What about the word 'no' is so difficult to understand, mate?" followed by "well, that's the condition we set when we provided images" followed by "not according to the correspondence I have here, you only started wheedling after we got images and the interview, dumbass. Omigod Suzy, I am sooooo glad I write about product design not fashion design. Got up at 6:45 (!!!) to go to my friend's St Martin's graduate show - the show started at 10:15-ish and I was standing at the back holding onto a rail for dear life praying I wouldn't faint it was so hot. A truly mental experience. And a completely vacuous 24 hours began yesterday evening when I spied Noel Fielding and Sadie Frost (not together, the latter was with BOYS. HALF HER AGE) in the pub. Then took respite in Made in Brazil and who should be at the next table but Amy Winehouse! Yes, they tried to make me go to rehab, I said no no oooh I quite fancy a caipirinha....clearly

ok so i accidentally pulled this guy at a party the other week. so far so good, nice guy, funny, lefty, smart, cute, lives in london (well, JUST, it's way out west) the right age for a change (err reading that back it sounds like he's the right age for me to change him, that's not what i meant, he doesn't need changing, what i meant was he's my age +1 or 2, not like 2x my age like the guys i normally fall for), whatever. then the next day he asked for my number and well, we were all still in the house the party was in all doing breakfast so i wasn't gonna go NO NO NO. so i didn't really think he'd call or anything, but he did, so we went out tonight. and i mean he's really nice, lovely guy, on The Side Of Good etc etc, there isn't anything *wrong* with him (well he eats meat but i sometimes find if i'm thinking some guy is really hott that i'm like "ah he eats meat whatever la la la i can work around that la la la", which is how i know who is genuinely hott and who is actually nott), he's all the above and socially smart (which is more than i am) (he met like 4 or 5 of my friends and was immediately sorted and comfortable talking to them) and all good things like that. but, basically, there's nothing there. from my side. he's someone i'd really like in my life but not as a partner. but he thinks otherwise, he was hinting and not-so-hinting and stuff all evening. so i was trying to be like all gentle-like and, you know, nice and not cuntish about it (btw this new arcade fire shit is AWESOME, yes i am a bit drunked but OMG) but i think i'm gonna have to be quite clear about it at some point. so i guess i have 2 qs.

1 - how is nice way to do this? i want to be honest, cos he is lovely. if he was some tosser i could just go OK FUCK OFF TO MCDONALDS JUST FUCK OFF. but no. how honest is too honest? any definite DO NOT DO THISes? DO DO THISes?

(addition 1b - is it appallingly bad to genuinely want and try to be friends?)

2 - ok i can't really be arsed with this happening again. but i do not want to be banned from the world of the one night stand bc, like, it's nice. do i need to like carry a contract around or something?

yes i have had this done to me from the other side obv but it's always been a bit oblique and situation-specific. or they've been cuntish about it (ok only 1 has been cuntish). heeelp.

still thinking.

i don't think i do anything to like lead them on or anything. it has happened that trying to live by casual and every-directional kindness (which just seems like OBVIOUSLY THIS IS THE WAY TO LIVE MOFO but apparently it's not that obvious) has resulted in people thinking i was best fwends with them when i wasn't. but um this isn't really like that. Okay, it's not just me that hears this as Amy Winehouse, yes?

Obviously I have no real advice that you don't already know, Emsk. To recap:
1 - You just have to do this thing. If he "gets you" then it'll be okay, if he doesn't then.. it's going to hurt.
1b - no of course not.
2 - cease being awseome.

Morning there. Great weekend. Stayed in and actually got sleep Friday. Then: went to pub, went for food with friends, panicked cos I'd lost my phone, embarrassed Herself by getting the restaurant staff to sing Happy Birthday, found phone again (huzzah!), bed, fry-up breakfast, went to York, geeked out by showing Herself the railway museum, shopping, great food, cinema for Hot Fuzz (loltastic!), bed again.

And now I've had to get up and come to work (boo hiss etc)

Hi everyone. My weekend wasn't as exciting as everyone else's. Um . . .I bought a new keyboard! Drinks Fri+Sat night, has an impromptu TV Burp marathon with housemates, all good fun.

You know the friend I slept with last weekend and wasn't sure about what to do? Well, it turns out she's actually quite into me, and it turns out that I might be maybe sorta kinda quite into her as well. It looks like I'm going up this weekend to see her and I'll see what happens. It's really weird, like I've forgotten how to do this whole relationship thing. I was always shit at it, but mostly because I didn't really want it before. But now I kinda do, and . ... bah, I dunno. I'd delete this paragraph cos it's shit, but I don't know what to write in it's place.

And as for you emsk . .. well, Andrew pretty OTM.

1. Yeh, just be plain and nice and good. I mean, you're a nice good person anyway, this won't be so hard, and I'm sure he's a nice good person too, so it'll be fine. But make sure you really want this, don't give him the heave ho now and then change your mind later. Not saying you would do that of course, but generally when people who are good, nice guy, funny, lefty, smart, cute, lives in london etc fancy you, then it's easy to rue the boat you've missed after they go away.

1b. Friends are good, especially friendly friends. And nice people know this.

2. Yeh, pretty much stop being awesome. You're not gonna get much sympathy concerning the "Oh no why do so many cute boys fancy me" dilemma. Just carry on being the lovely you - tbh you're not doing much wrong at the moment.

Johnney B's got a system (stigoftdumpilx), Monday, 19 February 2007 09:43 (seventeen years ago) link

2) Produce a contract, preferably on carbon paper at the moment of coitus, that should sort the men from the boys.

Ed (dali), Monday, 19 February 2007 09:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Or if not a contract certainly a memoranda of understanding.

Johnney B's got a system (stigoftdumpilx), Monday, 19 February 2007 09:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I think carbon copies are the key thing. You should then tear it off repeating the mantra, 'Pink copy for you, yellow for the file and white I keep'

I'm sorry for not offering helpful advice, I feel it has already been given.

Hello everyone.

It is a rubbish morning here by the sea. Gales blowing, rain raining, Mister Monkey away in California. Miserable.

Emsk, having been on the receiving end of the "you know you're lovely but I don't fancy you" talk, can I just add that bloke is probably going to be a bit pissed off initially, no matter how well you break it to him. Don't be too hard on him if he is. He'll get over it and get back to being nice, in which case you can be friends. Or he won't, in which case, well, his loss.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 19 February 2007 09:57 (seventeen years ago) link

What you should do is stop playing with his heart and leading him on and tell him straight (you should have hinted and not-so-hinted that you're just not that into him during your date - which you shouldn't have gone on but anyway), the very next time you see him - not "at some point" - you should take him aside and tell him, kindly, to his face that you want to remain freinds but you don't want it to go any further than that.
How he will react to having the love rug pulled from under him is, well, you'll just have to wait and see.

DavidM (DavidM), Monday, 19 February 2007 10:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Morning! After an all-too brief break, we have students running the halls again. Thankfully, though, it seems to still be fairly quiet at the moment. And I'm off to London Village this weekend for a concert, and then the silly all-night Oscars marathon on Sunday evening (a tradition almost ten years old now, which is a trifle scary).

The receiving end of that talk is pretty shitty, but I agree with the consensus that it's better to get it out of the way as soon as possible (I had to wait for over a year once to have that talk, and yeah, that did suck, but we got over it eventually).

My weekend was mostly quiet, but a great party on Saturday with some ILXors and some Livejournal people gave me two neat stories:

I met a friend of a friend, and got talking. At one point RickyT, late of this parish, turns up and goes
"Hey, are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Okay. It's just that... they played 'We Want Fun'"
"Yeah, I heard."
"And you weren't dancing!"
"Yeah, no I'm fine. I'll dance if Carter comes on."
"Alright."

And at the end when everyone was setting off (the lady having departed some time before) I was talking to Ricky again and I was saying, y'know, sorry about that, but pretty lady! And said "Yeah, I figured that was probably it, but being here with the song on and you not dancing... it was bloody weird!"

And the other story has to do with her flatmate, Olaf, who apparently is/will be on Quiz Idol, some kind of reality show. Olaf's by all accounts very into the puzzles, and as I was walking down to the bus stop later with The Lex (who dropped in "Oh yeah, X's girlfriend, she's lovely"), he was saying that he has from time to time, back when Olaf was his flatmate, come back from clubbing and seen the gent in a state of, eh, some agitation going "I have a deadline in an hour, I have to finish the Times quiz!". Which was slightly bemusing until the penny dropped and I realised that it's not Olaf, it's Olav, the guy who writes the Times quiz, and who I've stared at the name of several times, wondering who could come up with the questions day in day out, picturing some frowning bald bearded swede. I was ridiculously excited to realise that I knew someone (in fact several) who knew him, despite the fact that I already know more than one person in the paper (including, er, The Lex).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 February 2007 10:54 (seventeen years ago) link

How cool. Although, given the way the conversation has been going this morning, you'll forgive me if I read "state of agitation" in perhaps a different way than you meant.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, you thought wrong.

I had a phone call from Mister Monkey about two hours ago to say that our credit cards have been cancelled (they are on the same account). And he's just got to California, and now has no credit card for two weeks. This is particularly annoying because he doesn't have his luggage either and was planning on buying some new clothes today.

EEEK, will the credit card company not courier him a new one?

Ed (dali), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Emsk, regarding your boy conundrum, I would just explain that you want to be friends. And stick to it. There's no point going through all the soul searching of why it doesn't work for you two in that way. However, I wouldn't recommend telling them you want to 'just be friends' and then make your moves all over again and decide all over again you don't like them in that way after all, leaving them feeling hurt, dejected, bitter, angry and a million other things. Because then, just when they thought they were over you and could get back to being the funny, articulate, confident bon viveur they were before, they'll just be the pathetic, emotional mess they were the first time, only with an added dose of self loathing as to how they could be so stupid again. I'm going speed dating tomorrow. Right now, I could think of better ways to spend my time.

Nobodys Prawn (Nobodys Prawn), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:19 (seventeen years ago) link

The Company (the giver of all that is good) will help him. I think one of his colleagues is going to drive him to Sears in the morning and buy stuff on his card.

Speed dating always sounded too much like having to write different CVs for each job. I don't think I'd like it.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Good morning. I've spent the weekend IN BED, RESTING, watching Nathan Barley and the Mighty Boosh back to back in a semi-feverish state. And have still not shooken the lurgy. Bah.

Emsk, eep, ow, not a fun situation to be in. The key to one night stands is NOT to exchange phone numbers afterwards. Not ever. If they ask, give them a wrong number or something. That way, only badness lies.

I mean, it's fair enough to go on a date to establish that in the cold, sober light of day, no, you don't consider him relationship material. But as hard as it is, it has to be done, giving the polite brushoff. Remember all the advice that people were giving me when I was trying to figure out what to do with the British Librarian? That was quite good, and worked with the desired outcome. (Then again, we did not sleep together.)

OK, now I'm going to return to my semi-feverish state and mumble occasionally about Julian Barratt swanning about a Morrocan tent dressed only in a loincloth and chains. I had to rewind the video three times to make sure it actually happened and I was not just hallucinating due to fever. Had I not been lying down, I would have fallen off the sofa.

x-x-x-post argh! Credit card cancelling, blargh! Did they say why they did it?

I've had credit cards cancelled on me without my asking twice in my life - the first time when I was stranded in Detroit due to fuckwittage on the part of travelling companion. In the end, I called the card company and even though they were not able to get a card out to me, they did give me the number of the new card, so I was able to book a flight home.

The second time, it was for "abnormal use patterns" - yes, of course my use patterns suddenly got really abnormal, I was stuck in Newark airport over 9/11 and I was trying desperately to ring my mum on the card, book a hotel or a ride out of there or anything. None of which I could do. Fuckwits - sometimes an abnormal activity spurt reveals that there has been a theft, sometimes it reveals that the person is IN AN EMERGENCY.

One of my credit cards was used to open an 'account' on something called "Yahoo Money", with 50p as an 'opening' credit.

Result: Cancelled/reissued card, and no money nicked.

Even just on practical grounds, this is possibly not a great idea if they're a friend of a friend rather than just someone you met at a gig.

Friday

-Ominous portent: soundman shows up an hour late, already stroppy.
-Snare stand, which promoter said venue had, is not at venue. Soundman says we'll just use upside-down stool. (Actually works, but, you know..)
-'Orrible place, with rubbish bands on before us, and bad sound in the room.
-Sound terrible from the start of our set; Jim's microphone off for first song, for which he sings, like a lot (only fixed by guy from other band--the soundman didn't seem to notice!).
-In the third song, Richie puts his stick right through the snare! It's another drummer's snare, and it was totally on its last legs, almost transparent. There are no other snares in the building. Richie turns the snare over. Breaks that side on next song. Must play without snare for last 35 minutes of set.
-The sound was rubbish throughout; we couldn't hear ourselves, making it very difficult to play well. And we couldn't really tell what was wrong (and tell the soundman what to change)--it was just shitty overall..
-Soldiered through somehow and finished our set (I'm quite proud of us, actually). Only to find that the guy at the door has left (for Denmark, apparently) before our set was over, so no payment for us!

g000blar (g00blar), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

As Kate says, sometimes abnormal usage is normal. Rather than cancelling the transaction and having the customer phone the company, the company should phone the customer and say "hi, someone's using your card in Mountain View. Are you in Mountain View?"

Or, in Kate's case, someone should have gone "hmm, there appears to be a huge meltdown going on in New York. Expect strange usage patterns."

In our case, normal usage goes like this: book flights to a place, then, several months later, fly to the place and spend loads of money. I would give a lot for a credit card that, when you booked flights using it, actually updated your profile to remember that you are away on those dates. It would save hassle.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 19 February 2007 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never done it, mind you.

But I've never had a one night stand ring me back, even if they did ask for my number. The only one I did make contact with after was the one that we had to exchange phone numbers because he lost his phone in my room and he had to ring it from my phone. Still went nowhere, I discovered I hated his band.

ACtually, wait, there's one that should have STAYED a one night stand but we were stupid enough to continue it. I also hated his band.

My cousin just got engaged over the weekend. I've never met his fiancee. It's just weird how the men in my family get married, but the women don't. Or maybe not so weird reading that above. My brother actually called me to discuss it. (!!!) I may have to go to Tronno for the wedding. But that means I can hang out with Mr. and Mrs. Noodles and the Canadian DDBs. Yeah.

Rather than cancelling the transaction and having the customer phone the company, the company should phone the customer and say "hi, someone's using your card in Mountain View. Are you in Mountain View?"

Well, this kind of depends on the idea that they might actually ring your mobile - because otherwise they're jsut going to get yer ansaphone. Also it depends on having a mobile - in both those circumstances, I did not. (Though in the former, I rang them and gave them a stable number at my sisX0r's house.)

I still haven't finished Season Two, Ed but I am still liking it very much! Problem is, I keep getting distracted from Teh Funnies and learning about COMEDY by Julian Barratt's hottness. (especially as in Season two he seems to be in a loincloth or hawaiian shorts or a TWEED UTILITY SUIT or some other outfit off hotttness every thirty seconds, most distracting.) Maybe I can only find something funny if the person being funny is HOTT. (See also Black Books.)

It is still off the wall enough, and totally unexpected enough to find funny. The element of surprise - but then again, these things are still funny the second time through. Or more. (I must admit, I've seen the Spirit of Jazz episode about half a dozen times now, and it never stops being funny.)

It was interesting to compare and contrast with Nathan Barley, which, even thought it's the same people, is much more vicious in its humour. Even though The Mighty Boosh is often quite mocking and makes fools of its protagonists, there's still a sense of affection, and even the "bad" characters are somehow endearing.

The whole point of Barley was that *no one* was sympathetic. And it had a kind of nastiness that made for uncomfortable viewing. But it was funnier the second time through, for understanding that in advance, and knowing that it was unrelenting vileness.

I suppose that says something about me, not that I'm Mrs. Huggles from Cuddlstein mountain or anything - but I prefer a gentler kind of humour.

Wheatberries are the actual wheat grain, rehydrated, looking like whole tabbouleh bits.

OK so Friday was all about telling a gallerist he could not have copy approval for an article about his artists, not even if magazine X were giving him this, we're not magazine X. Of course I did have other work to do and I shouted at him because he was ringing me about it every 90 minutes in the mistaken belief that somehow on the 9th attempt I would suddenly see the virtue of what he wanted. So not gonna happen.

g00blar, what was the venue and who was the promoter? i want to never do anything with them.

haha also, a cute thing happened on the way to the lock tavern last night (where i saw ADELE omg she was marvellous, fabulous voice, myspace.com/adelelondon). i was riding up clarence road (kind of semi-sketchy area) and this grizzled old dude in a big hat and coat started yelling something at me. i couldn't really understand him so didn't pay any attention, but he kept yelling and i realised he was saying "ring your bell! Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

An error of that magnitude is too ridiculous to get upset about. It is simply wrong, and that makes me laugh.

The thing that is most WTF is "ooh, this is The Lollies take on what is amusing to a British audience" thing which is patently absurd. Like he was reviewing us as a comedy routine, rather than a record.

Uh, no. It was so clearly our take on what was amusing to *us*.

But bah, it does bring back some issues which are still relevant - how do you write songs which people think are funny, without being seen as a Comedy Band. I don't even think I have a sense of humour, I just write these songs with a knee-jerk response of piss-taking to things that are hurting me. It's not like I'm trying to be funny. But then people pick up on that, and not the actual emotional content of the song.

God, I wish I'd never written or recorded Office Romance. Why is it the biggest pisstake is the thing that everyone remembers? Sigh.

Kate you really should download that Mingus album I sent you. It's great!

Actually i'm using up one of my free posts

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of the greatest achievements in orchestration by any composer in jazz history. Charles Mingus consciously designed the six-part ballet as his magnum opus, and -- implied in his famous inclusion of liner notes by his psychologist -- it's as much an examination of his own tortured psyche as it is a conceptual piece about love and struggle. It veers between so many emotions that it defies easy encapsulation; for that matter, it can be difficult just to assimilate in the first place. Yet the work soon reveals itself as a masterpiece of rich, multi-layered texture and swirling tonal colors, manipulated with a painter's attention to detail. There are a few stylistic reference points -- Ellington, the contemporary avant-garde, several flamenco guitar breaks -- but the totality is quite unlike what came before it. Mingus relies heavily on the timbral contrasts between expressively vocal-like muted brass, a rumbling mass of low voices (including tuba and baritone sax), and achingly lyrical upper woodwinds, highlighted by altoist Charlie Mariano. Within that framework, Mingus plays shifting rhythms, moaning dissonances, and multiple lines off one another in the most complex, interlaced fashion he'd ever attempted. Mingus was sometimes pigeonholed as a firebrand, but the personal exorcism of Black Saint deserves the reputation -- one needn't be able to follow the story line to hear the suffering, mourning, frustration, and caged fury pouring out of the music. The 11-piece group rehearsed the original score during a Village Vanguard engagement, where Mingus allowed the players to mold the music further; in the studio, however, his exacting perfectionism made The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady the first jazz album to rely on overdubbing technology. The result is one of the high-water marks for avant-garde jazz in the '60s and arguably Mingus' most brilliant moment.

I can remember actually having a quite heated discussion with an ex boyfriend who caught me listening to Benny Goodman or someone trying to convince him that that was Not Jazz, it was Swing. Swing is OK. Glenn Miller and all that. Jazz is Evil.

Mahavishnu Orchestra aren't jazz, they're fusion.

But then again, if there's one thing I hate more than jazz, it's fusion. CUT ALL THEIR THUMBS OFF, ARGH ARGH - I once told a bandmate (actually it was Anton who some of you have met) that he could cut my thumbs OFF if he ever caught me slapping or popping. PURE EVIL!¬!!

i meant to say this hours ago:

OTMFM

i will not do that because i have seen the hurt it causes my closest friends.

emsk ( emsk ), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Look at me, I'm listening to jazz...

ARGH, ONLY FIVE SECONDS IN, AND THERE'S THAT ANNOYING TISH-TAH-TISH-TA CYMBAL THING!!!!! Look, take that out, and put a nice motorik beat under it, and I might be able to give it a listen, but this is just excruciating.

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Kate, did you like the Blonde Redhead, Marmoset,Pelican and Arcade Fire albums?

pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 19 February 2007 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Nope, I got two minutes and three seconds in before I had to rip off my headphones.

The cymbals, the fucking cymbals. And those wandering DUM-DUM-DUM-DUM basslines that just go up and down the scale like mindless twiddling, argh, argh, I'm trying to think of the quote from Amadeus, about up and down teh scales like the greedy songbirds they are, fireworks that never shut up and argh, I am too tired by too many notes.

There's a lot about it that's nice. If they took the sort of overlay textural bits and stuck it on top of motorik beats and a really fat sub-bass in a quite simple loop, it'd be the best thing ever. But then it would be prog or spacerock or something good and not Jazz in the first place!

Even more annoying than the credit card thing, my phone turned itself off last night (or rather the battery ran down because the camera slidey thing opened up and the phone was trying to take pictures of the inside of my pocket all night) and so I missed a phone call from my brother Paul (who some of you met) to say that he was in town for just one night last night.

Stupid phone.

Otherwise, though, I am in good humour. Got a good start on novel edits, which is v. satisfying.

emsk ( emsk ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 10:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think my Motorola had one of those - but the faults with it were nearly all software ones so probably all Motorolas of the period had them.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 10:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Motorolas are horrible, horrible phones. The only reason people I know get Razrs or whatevs is that the service providers appear to be giving them away. I had one of the first tri-bands handed down to me when I first got a phone and it ate all kinds of calls going each way, which sucks when you're Pay As You Going for all kinds of fuckup. Also CLAMSHELLS ICK. So it's a Sony Ericsson or Nokia for me.

it also had an aerial that you could unscrew. emsk ( emsk ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 10:41 (seventeen years ago) link

a) long battery life
b) lots of storage space for phone numbers and text messages
c) robust (i would like one of those nokia sports ones as they are apparently also water-resistant, but they come with all this sports and betting shit pre-installed and i definitely don't want that)

er that's it.

they obv just give away whatever they've got left from the last few months in the freebie thing, i think i have to talk to them to find out.

emsk ( emsk ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 11:08 (seventeen years ago) link

No, the K800 is the one I have that keeps turning itself off because the camera slidey thing is too loose and keeps sliding to the camera setting. Annoying! Great camera, though. Reasonably long battery life too, except I keep not charging it. What makes a person be the kind of person who forgets to charge their phone, forgets to take important tablets, but remembers everyone's name and what they all do for a living, even ten years later?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 11:09 (seventeen years ago) link

ah thanks! i won't get that then - i think sony have a problem with this - the one that smells like fire is (was, sniff) an ericsson (z250/750i i think?) and it was constantly taking pics of the inside of my pocket because it had a little camera button on the side to use to take photos when the flippiness was closed.

emsk ( emsk ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 11:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Morning! Despite being in a rubbish mood when I woke up, I am now in a great mood because a woman had PUPPIES on the train.

Two of them were on leashes because they were big, but the third was in a puppy transport box and not very pleased about it so she had to take the puppy out of the box and she was all WIGGLY and EXCITED and CUET and UTTERLY ASTONISHED by being on a train and the cutest thing ever in the history of cute.

Johnney B's elephant physics made me laugh like a drain.

I know nothing of phones, I understand them not. Mine makes text messages, sometimes makes calls - though it does have a weird foible that it has to be plugged in during transAtlantic calls or it will lose charge and disconnect itself, but does not have to be plugged in for calls within the UK. I do not understand this. Surely all calls are going through the same relay point, why would it take more energy to receive a call from the States?

Keith and I have decided that when we are millionaires, we are going to buy a tramp steamer and chug around the world in it. We are semi-serious about this, although it is unlikely that we will ever be rich enough.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 12:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Tramp steamer would be awesome! You could be like Rachel and her Steamboat (she called it Baby Boy) - keeping in line with the hott Julians of the world. When I retire or pay off my mortgage, whichever comes first, I am going to buy a canal boat and just putt about Britain.

Anyway, here are some more kittens...

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 13:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha ha ha, Kerr, I was listening to the Dronerock Fairy's offerings, and thought "wow, this Arcade Fire album got about 1000x better on the last song" and then realise that Blonde Redhead had started.

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 13:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Oooo, I love Blonde Redhead.

g000blar (g00blar), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 13:49 (seventeen years ago) link

They're one of those bands I always forget I like. I mean, I take no note of them, despite having a couple of their albums - until someone plays them and then suddenly I go "ooh, what is this?"

Kinda disappointed by the new Arcade Fire. I mean, I love their giant church organ sound. But they don't do much with it. And Win Butler has developped an annoying habit of singing like Bruce Springsteen.

::shudders::

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 13:51 (seventeen years ago) link

LUCK or MAGIC: i just mumbled something oh my friend had it and then she moved house and she lost it in the move and she only found it recently i just got it back last night mumble mumble, but then it popped up on the screen and it was already at £00.00!

also they swapped my old-skool hackney libraries card for a new one which has PICTURES OF BICYCLES on it (you could choose some squiggly things or a mural or er actually i don't know, i saw the bicycles and i was lost) and also a thing you attach to your KEYRING so if you forget your library card you can still take stuff out.

emsk ( emsk ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I am not done listening to the last 3 bazillion albums you just sent me, Kerr! It takes me ages to listen to music. If I like it, I have to listen to it several times to digest it, get my head around it, absorb it, try to understand it, listen to it in several moods, to see if my reaction to it changes.

Unless of course, it's jazz, in which case I scream so loud I irritate my collegues and rip it off in under 2 minutes.

My friend Catty used to have this recurring fantasy/story/website about where all my crushboys went after the crushes died. Like, somewhere there's this support group for boys formerly crushed on by Kate. And they all get together and compare stories and try to warn each other "Hi, my name's Alex James and I was once Kate's Crush" and then Little Jay Ferguson would arrive and would swear "No, no, she loves me, she loves me forEVER!!!" and they would all warn him "No, no, she is fickle, it will not last!" and he would be all "A Canadian does not make lov, a Canadian IS love!"

Aaaah, good times...

Kate > Do you like 5ive?

pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 11:56 (seventeen years ago) link

5ive? As in the Medicine song (yes, very much indeed) or the 90s boyband? (They had that one really good song, actually)?

Yeah, that would be the one. The video was quite good, too.

HEY! I'm supposed to be working. I am in the maths groove.

I'm sure I put some 5ive on those dvdrs.

After reading that short biog I looked up expecting to see Ned's name there for some reason...

So, the brother was in town yesterday on a flying visit, and told me that the comedy club he helps run, Full Mooners, is doing a gig in Glasgow on Patricks Night. So now I have to figure out if I can get to Glasgow for reasonable money for Patricks weekend so I can have some comedy stylings.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 12:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Do you have any brothers that don't do comedy? Or is this a different brother to the one that I met?

Also, isn't flying from Dublin to Glasgow for St. Patricks Day a bit... backwards?

in the case of masonic attack (kate), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 12:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I am having green tea, oh god, methadone of the caffeine world. I keep thinking that one of these days I will pick up a taste for green tea, but I never really do. It is not coffee. It's hard to get into the maths trance without coffee. I hate lent already.

Full Mooners!

In a hotel, had Lemon/Ginger tea just sos Dawn'd have another normal tea for the morning. That's a bit nice, LemGing tea!

g000blar (g00blar), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 12:39 (seventeen years ago) link

No, that's half the fun, mwah hah hah!

LemonGinger tea has no caffeine. I need to keep a drip. Hence the green tea methadone, which has less tea than either coffee or black tea.

I am going to go home and eat my last avocado of lent. :-(

Ha ha, I have created a double of the vastly successful "How Am I Driving" report called "How Am I Banking" whose name created much mirth around the office due to its potential for misuse.

Oh dear, we are such geeks.

This is the same one you met. He was on a flying visit to Dublin yesterday and the day before.

Also, isn't flying from Dublin to Glasgow for St. Patricks Day a bit... backwards?

'Tis the beauty of the thing. Ever since they Americanized Patrick's Day, well everyone just goes out and gets really drunk. In the old days everyone just stayed home and looked at the rain.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah, the pointy-nosed scruffy haired hott brother. Wait, I am not perving over your brother, just making an observation. Otherwise I'm going to turn into Dog Latin. Or was it Sick Mouthy that used to perve over DL's sister? I can no longer remember my ILX memes.

I just got asked for the Oracle passwords, ha ha, it's kinda pathetic that I'm really the only person that knows them. What if I was hit by a bus?

Most things the Sys Admin can just hack into. But not the old Oracle system. Mwah hah hah hah. They actually had to dig out my old workstation out of storage to get back into it - I only recognised it because of the curry stains on the front.

x-post me, too.

Okay, so, I'm supposed to go to the theater tonight with my mother, but I can't stop coughing. I don't want to spend the evening in the theater coughing, but I also don't want to let my mother down. And if I drive into town to pick up the tickets, then I'm in town and I might as well go to the theater, no? No, because I will cough all the time.

I don't know what is the best thing to do.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:56 (seventeen years ago) link

go to the theatre and suck on something.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 13:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, suck on boiled sweets - especially riccola.

Wait, does "hound" mean like "dog" as in unattractive or "dog" as in slut?

If he's a slut, that means he might not be very choosy which means I might stand a chance at getting laid and... no wait, STOP that thought right there. La la la la la. Oracle programming, green tea, funky dollar bill, la la la la.

Wait, does "hound" mean like "dog" as in unattractive or "dog" as in slut

I mean, to use my mother's terminology, that he would get up on the crack of dawn. However, he likes ladies who are prepared to run around after him, sit by his hospital bed, and listen to his endless stories about how great all his comedian pals are, so I would advise against him.

Boiled sweets no good. It is a chesty, inhalery kind of a cough. Like spasms. I guess I'll just see how I feel when I get there and if I'm coughing too much I'll just leave.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

My brother is now married off to an heiress so no pimping for me, either. Dammit, brother, why can't you pimp ME off to one of your rich buddies? Oh wait, they're all Republican CUNTS. never mind.

No, I don't like high maintainance boys who have to be too looked after. That's no good. I think I just need to get laid, not actually have to run around paying attention to someone, bah.

Ah, is it the coughing fit, can't stop kind of a cough? I've had those all week and the only thing to do about them is leave the room and gasp for air and maybe drink some cold water. Yuck.

He didn't want the hassle and the strain of having to do that, esp as they had said there was no cameras there.

Ned, we must make this potluck happen.

Oh hell yes. Your place (I assume), the 8th. How many people can we get in there?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, you can't be too surprised/disappointed that they never caught them then. Also, there are plenty of other place they could have seen them and I thought you said it was your dad who thought there were no cameras based on the police not saying anything rather than confirming the lack of cameras and...oh, half a dozen of us have told you all this already.

Accentmonkey - how long will you be in Glasgow, if you come over? Would be nice to meet up since we all arsed it up so badly the last time.

Accentmonkey - how long will you be in Glasgow, if you come over? Would be nice to meet up since we all arsed it up so badly the last time.

Yes, it would. I don't know yet, but mostly likely Friday till Sunday, with for definite being at Full Mooners on Saturday night, except that I don't know where it's on.

I did go to the theatre last night and didn't cough too much. I did almost punch the people next to me, though, who didn't really get Mamet dialogue and whispered theories to each other about what was going on all through the second act. Stupid people. Of course I suppose (she said snobbily) that that's the risk you run when you go to see plays that have TV people in them.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 22 February 2007 09:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Zermatt Advice:

To get there get the train from the airport (both geneva and zurich have stations in the airport). You can get what is known as a Swiss Transfer ticket from http://www.sbb.ch/ which is cheaper than an ordinary ticket which covers you from the airport/border to your final destination. If you fly with Swiss they can check your luggage through to the railway station at the end of the journey.

You can buy passes in advance on-line, but it costs a little extra for the reusable rfid card, see http://www.zermatt.ch/

For good apres ski, get to the Hennu Stall on the last run between Furi and the main town.

In the evening Paperlapub and the sneewitchen seem to be pretty reliable.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 February 2007 09:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Ack! Not that kind of advice (although it's appreciated, of course).

Any thoughts on which end/part of town to stay in? Last time I was there was five or six years ago, and I'm finding it difficult to differentiate Zermatt memories from Val d'Isere ones (I remember the caipirinhas quite clearly, but after that all is a blur :).

My colleague has intimated that he may not be around much longer, and that I might want to lock in some vacation sooner, because it may be difficult to get time off later.

It's -20 out today and somehow skiing is just not exciting me much, but I can't find anything else particularly interesting or reasonably priced for mid-March. :(

substitute, mitya for him (mitya), Thursday, 22 February 2007 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

There are lots of nice chalets around Hauptstrasse which is well placed for the Bubble to Kleine Matterhorn and Riffleberg and good for the town as well.

I am cross with my detractors on the board. Should I shrug it off and say "so what? they're only having a laugh, innit?" I am confused as to the correct course of action.
