A thread where I point out the Doctor Who Christmas thing was rubbish this year and you all point at me and call me a Who Rockist and say you enjoyed it.

Bah fucking humbug. That was utter rubbish. I'd lost interest after about 10 minutes, the "greatest chase scene ever" was fanwank of possibly even a worse kind than cybermen vs daleks (a scenario the editor of the New Adventures line said was so bad he'd make sure anybody writing it never got near Who again), Catherine Tate was never less than annoying and Sarah Parrish made me want to eat my own vomit. George Lucas would have been embarrassed by some of that dialogue.

Anyway, now you all tell me I'm on my own and you loved it.

Oh, and the trailer for the next series gets discussed and I admit I'm such a sad fanboy it did get me excited even though I wish RTD would get the fuck away from the programme.

I hope someone bought Murray Gold a volume control knob this Christmas, because I think his is definitely broken.

carson dial (carson dial), Monday, 25 December 2006 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh it wisnae that bad, not too many RTD excesses. Yeah Tate was a bit annoying but she wasn't as bad as the Piper and Tennant show (even though Lance and Donna were rather reminiscent of Mickey and Rose). Baddie I suppose was yet another "Feed me Seymour" type even though she looked pretty good. Unclear how a bit of river water was enough to put paid to the entire Raknos brood. Hmm I guess I haven't said too much positive about it - IT WAS EXCITING I WAS EXCITED. Especially in the chase scene!

xpost, yeah music was pretty bad.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 25 December 2006 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Not rubbish. Not particularly good though. The plot was particularly nonsensicle. I liked the 'getting over Rose' aspect of it.

Chap (chap), Monday, 25 December 2006 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Mediocre, the baddie was annoying, tennat was emo. I rather liked the teaser trail, though.

Ed (dali), Monday, 25 December 2006 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

It was good and bad in entirely predictable ways. And after all, isn't that the real meaning of Christmas?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 25 December 2006 21:10 (seventeen years ago) link

4/10
way too much (loud) music
tate's voice too annoying
too 'rushed' at the end (as usual)
i realised i was only watching it for the trailer at the end altho nothing really stood out there either

(just for contrast i thought last year's was great and still do but there's probably too much a sense of novelty re Who@Christmas surrounding judgement there)

sede vacante (blueski), Monday, 25 December 2006 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

It was okay, far too much shouting going on though (but not from Tennant who seems to have toned down his performance). Ceaseless shouting doesn't equal exciting drama.

Daft but not as stupid as this thread title.

Roffle! OMG you're right!

Yeah it wasn't that good really.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I enjoyed it. Cressida is quite right, the visual gag of flushing the spiders down the plughole was funny and neat. C. Tate not as annoying as she could've been. Emo is the best thing about the programme. I am going to do my best to avoid reading commenting on the Doctor Who threads in future cos frankly the haters come across as rockist mentalists pining after something that wasn't that good in the first place.

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Monday, 25 December 2006 23:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Strangely I thought Catherine Tate was possibly the best thing about the episode. Second hand Robot Santa/Xmas Tree trick = lame. Spider baddie = k-lame.

Tennant's emo "I miss Rose" stuff wasn't convincing in the slightest, in fact it seemed to be only paying lip-service to the events of the last episode.

The best bits were the gags that acknowledged what formulaic cobblers it's becoming. "What, a secret base underneath a major London landmark?" etc.

I'm sure it's better than a lot of what passed for old-Who but Vague is missing the point that it's still nowhere near as good as the Ecclestone stuff, even when it was at its worst.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 00:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Nah, Ecclestone - who I generally adore as an actor - was good but po-faced. Episode quality probably does fluctuate more with DT, but I guess what I don't get is what the naysayers want from Doctor Who. Cos wildly camp, mercurial but often ropey seems the only way it can go, for me.

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 00:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Admittedly I watched it with noisy excitable children tonite so I might have missed out a lot of detail, but I think the mainstreaming/denerdification of DW is a good thing.

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 00:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I watched a few of the Ecclescake episodes the other day and the volume of gags coming from the Doctor's mouth puts paid to this "po-faced" nonsense. It wasn't all "leave the earth alone" gravitas.

(What the naysayers want from Doctor Who = more alien planets, better baddies, fewer rub 'killing all the aliens in 30 seconds', certainly less 'oh you humans, you're great, you are!')

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 00:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd agree that all those things would be good too, but the lack of them doesn't make the current series rubbish. Maybe the answer would be a wider range of scriptwriters, and never employ anybody who's seen Buffy.

It's quite possible that I'm defending it purely on the basis of a) Girl in the Fireplace, b) populist showboating and c) angering purists.

Can we all at least agree that when we saw the Dalek in the trailer for the new series we said "oh FUCK offfffff"?

No surprise since the episode details had already leaked, plus allegedly the deal they had to do with the Nation estate to use them means they have to be in every series (can't remember where this comes from, possibly 1an L3v1n3 so caveat emptor).

Haha, my dad actually gave a little cheer.

"the mainstreaming/denerdification of DW" in action. Yay!

What I want better: scriptwriting (certainly less RTD, who doesn't know how to finish a plot which is why we end up with so many deux ex machina/maguffin endings that resolve the plot in 30 seconds) with much better dialogue (again, RTD is the main culprit), less self-referencing (when it happens it's invariably about the new series and invariably about episodes RTD wrote, so comes across as "look at me I'm bloody great" smugness), less celebrity guest stars (we had enough of that in the JNT years), less popular culture references (which are so dating and often make the writer look like a dad trying to be "down wiv da kidz"), less "ooooooh, humans, you're bloody great" (Alan Moore managed to do more eloquently in 2 pages of Watchmen what RTD has been lumbering around in 2 series now), less reliance on CGI centrepieces (the "best chase ever was k-rub last night) and LESS OF A LOVE STORY BETWEEN THE DOCTOR AND HIS COMPANIONS. I'd also like to see as many two-parters as possible, as I still don't believe the 45min plot works, and less reliance on cast-off New Adventures plots for stories (another at least 1 this coming series).

Bits of the old series as was were excruciatingly bad but it still managed a far higher hit rate than this. And it was waaaaaaaay more mainstreamly popular, as the viewing figures show.

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 10:29 (seventeen years ago) link

In summary: sack RTD.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 10:48 (seventeen years ago) link

(I try to avoid reading episode details in advance. I am that sad.)

Most of what you say is fair enough aldo, but I don't mind the sexual tension schtick that RTD's introduced, and I like it being all frothy and Pop as long as it's done well - which admittedly at least half the time at the moment it isn't. I don't know what New Adventures plots are - is it something to do with a comic version or something?

The weird thing about 45 minutes is that mostly on DW it doesn't work, but other programmes have comfortably fitted a satisfying story into that amount of time. I'm thinking of the first 2 Star Trek series (whatever flaws they both have, the writing is often tight) and any number of American cop shows. So is it just a case of not enough good Britishes writers, or what?

Fat Lady Wrestler (Modal Fugue), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 10:53 (seventeen years ago) link

In summary: sack RTD.

Well, there is that. Although according to the rumour mill that's not going to happen as Jul13 G4rdn3r has decided he is Doctor Who and nobody can do it without him, so when he pisses off after 5 series ("If it was good enough for Buffy, it's good enough for me.") that'll be the end of that.

I just get this feeling of megalomania off him, and when you look at the sheer number he's writing for the coming series it scares me. (I think only 4 are not by him.)

I thought the sexual tension worked quite well, but we even saw it last night with a woman whose fiancée has turned out to be working for the evil spidery thing. You know, it doesn't have to happen EVERY TIME.

New Adventures was a Virgin book series that ran with the McCoy Doctor after cancellation. Many of the current writers wrote them, and some of them weren't very good. Dan Perry is yer expert here.

I don't know why they can't make 45 minutes work (since, as you say, US shows seem to manage it) but I really think they need to address the fact that it doesn't. 'Classic' Who (as RTD expects us to refer to it) had very few (5?) 45 minute stories and they were pretty good, contrasting with the large number of 6/3 parters (depending on episode length) that could easily have had about 45 minutes cut and reliant on a lot of running around to pad them out. I think ideally one a series is enough.

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 11:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Tennant's emo "I miss Rose" stuff wasn't convincing in the slightest, in fact it seemed to be only paying lip-service to the events of the last episode.

I think that as viewers we're possibly looking on it from a different viewpoint to the Doctor.

We last saw Rose five-and-a-half months ago - it was the second Saturday in July when she was dumped on a "Norwegian" beach. To the Doctor, though, that all happened immediately before the start of the current episode - it's not too surprising that he hasn't had time to absorb everything that happened.

Mind you, that doesn't quite square with the way he mentioned the Canary Wharf battle, which also, to him, happened much more recently than to either us or Catherine Tate.

The best bits were the gags that acknowledged what formulaic cobblers it's becoming. "What, a secret base underneath a major London landmark?" etc.

See also that bit, and the becoming-a-running-gag about people being completely unable to remember alien invasions - "You don't remember that?" "I was in Spain" "They had Cybermen in Spain too!"

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 11:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I still don't believe the 45min plot works.

It doesn't always work, but one of the things I like about the nu-Who is its application of Modern Storytelling Technology to make zippy episodes. When they completely work (Rose, Girl in the Fireplace, Love and Monsters) they're fantastic, and even when they don't they're neccesary: if the first season had been two- and three-parters, we wouldn't have a second season to bitch about. And I much prefer having a Doctor Who which is a lively and important part of the culture to one that kept all the old values and is watched by four people.

Bits of the old series as was were excruciatingly bad but it still managed a far higher hit rate than this. And it was waaaaaaaay more mainstreamly popular, as the viewing figures show.

My initial reaction to this is that I'd love to hear of any programme getting the viewing figures today that a popular mid-70s programme got, though I am entirely without actual data.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 13:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i liked how the solution at the end of this one wasn't a uh 'deus ex machina'; i mean, i was really expecting it to be and then it turns out to be something they've actually introduced already i'd totally forgotten about. i laughed.

the "you humans" bits and the wuv stuff are both ways of getting at a potentially interesting proper SF conceit, i.e. what is a vastly superior alien life form puttering around earth for, where exactly does his taking-of-human-pets bit fit morally. if they have been exhausted (which, um, maybe) then just getting rid of them is going to sort of beg the question.

i wanna hear more about what happened before the new series started, but i dunno how they'd do that. i am also probably the only person who'd welcome more episodes like 'boom town'.

tom sandbox west (thomp), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 15:53 (seventeen years ago) link

The most interesting aspect of the ep in terms of character was the hint of the Doctor's ruthlessness and even cruelty. I liked the efficiency with which he dispatched the baddies.

Also, Aldo did enjoy the Ecclestone series, if I remember right, so I don't think it's fair to have a go at him for being a mentalist-Who-rockist.

I really enjoyed the Christmas special. I thought that Missus Raknos gave it a bit too much of the LOOK AT MY PUPPET COSTUME, but otherwise, it was great fun.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 28 December 2006 10:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Liked:
Shouty Donna - Tate wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It's nice for nu-Who to have an assistant who doesn't think that meeting the Doctor is the greatest thing that's ever happened to her. The running joke about her missing out on alien invasions actually made me giggle.
Bad Doctor - Donna's point at the end was well made, he really does need someone to stop him. Is anyone else but me bothered about the fact that this cuddly new Doctor seems rather fond of genocide?

Disliked:
Robot Santas - ffs RTD think of something else to tie it into Christmas.
Pantomime Villain - All she did was shout and posture and overact and the make-up was rubbish.

My take on this version of the Doctor is that he's still traumatised by the Time War (which would appear to have been fought by the foppish McGann Doctor) - the Ecclescake version was the PTSD Doctor, visibly hurting and vulnerable; whereas emo-Doctor is the reaction, overly vengeful and fond of extreme (one might say final) solutions to his problems.

In the right hands, this could be awsome. What's the most number of beings/aliens/people/whatever that the Doctor has killed at once? And was it okay? If the answer to this week's episode is to destroy a solar system of 100 billion aliens, should he? And would the assistant stop him?

I liked it. It was cheesy but, fuck's sake, folks, it's Christmas, it's what you do with telly shows at Christmas. I liked Catherine Tate a lot, her shoutiness and refusal to defer to the Doctor was done pretty well, and made a pleasant change to Rose's doe-eyed insistence on unquestioningly following the Doctor whatever he said. I thought Donna looked an excellent companion in the making, and was actually disappointed that she didn't go with him. Someone to question him and keep him in check would be brilliant, and I hope that's taken on board when he gets hold of Martha. And, yes, flushing the spider down the plughole - I had to explain that to others too. I liked it.

And, yes, I did go "Oh fuck off" when the Dalek appeared in the teaser (actually I said "oh, come off it" because i was sitting with my parents, but I thought "oh fuck off" in my head, honest).

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tennant left, but I'm not at liberty to say more.

Christmas special was all a bit too much for me. I was still traumatized from the Rose-farewell-on-windswept-beach, (yes yes, I liked her), so all this shouty bride nonsense just pissed me off no end, and Spider-Queen didn't help at all. It was just all a bit bash-crash, whizz bang...the Tardis chase was fun but I dunno..think I was just in a maudlin mood & mad at the Doctor not having fun with Rose & Ricky The Tin Dog anymore.

I don't even want to think about Tennant leaving. Heartbroken's right. I'd be a jibbering mess.

I think the annoying thing about the Christmas special is that there have been two now and neither have made any real effort to be Christmassy other than going 'robot Santas, dangerous Christmas tree, snow, bish bash bosh'. And because the idea of doing a proper Dickensian Xmas special is so good it seems a bit wasted.

(I've liked Torchwood, by and large, but I'm keeping it very disassociated from Doctor Who in my mind, which isn't very difficult, tbh)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Friday, 29 December 2006 12:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Torchwood's been pretty enjoyable recently, I reckon. The plots are still bollocks for the most part but, unexpectedly, I find I actually give a shit about the characters (well, Gwen and Owen, at least).

Chap (chap), Friday, 29 December 2006 12:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Torchwood would have worked pretty well as a non-Doctor Who related series, just as a series about weird and unexplained things (a Welsh X-Files, sort of). The truth about Captain Jack's being revealed next week, isn't it? About time too - I thought that was the whole point of him being there, but it's pretty much all about Gwen and there's never been much point in CJH being there - the Doctor Who references seem a bit clunky, just there to point out that this is a Doctor Who spin-off rather than to add anything.

Ed (dali), Friday, 29 December 2006 12:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Torchwood has bugged me for all sorts of reasons.
The main one has been a distict lack of situations where they're forced to make uncomfortable decisions - the only one that comes to mind where they did do that was the fairy episode where Cap'n Jack lets the fairies have the evil little girl.
Yes the fight club ep. was hideous, but the "next week on Torchwood" trail made it look like the final two-parter might actually be worth watching. I always like watching things go quite spectacularly wrong.

Come to think of it an evil Doctor would be brilliant. They could do a whole season over which the pretty female assistant du-jour realises the Doctor's actually getting more and more extreme. If I were a Dr Who writer I'd make damn sure those genocides he's committed would come back to haunt him. Then Torchwood could fix him (Yay! Make me a series producer right now!)

Methinks RTD had forgotten to write a page or two of dialogue and had to hastily fill something in eh readers?

I dunno, we could have had another corridor.

An evil DOUBLE DOCTOR is what we want - after all it worked in Meglos! There wz an evil Doc taken over by FAXXION PARADOX in the Doctor 8 books and seeing as they thrive on temporal paradoxes I can imagine they can easily get round the destruction of Gallifrey Mean Time.

Also they could gay up and have babies.

We have the Sarah Jane Adventures starting on New Years Day.

Ed (dali), Friday, 29 December 2006 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Accentmonkey's love for Tennant shocks me to my core!

Really? But I love him.

Sarah, are you talking about a separate person/time lord, or some kind of evil mirror Rotcod? Either way I'm not sure gaying up for babymaking would be a great approach. Although it would be fun to listen to parents across the land trying to explain it to their kids. "The Doctor's tired, and the other one is carrying him."

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 29 December 2006 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

"The Doctor's inflatable, and the other one's" oh you get the idea.

That Terry Nation deal, did that include having the Daleks in "The Vicar of Dibley" as well?

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 02:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Sarah Jane Adventures was surprisingly watchable. Finale of Torchwood was pretty good too. And yes, he's back on the Tardis.

Watched a tiny bit of Torchwood last night, the very very end while I was waiting for the magnificently tacky Pauline Fowler funeral to start. Is that where Captain Jack's gone then? Thank god.

The last two Torchwood episodes were the only two I've seen, but blimey it was awful. Were the others any better? Nice with the Captain Jack-gets-a-snog-every-episode, though.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 11:44 (seventeen years ago) link

How did he get back on the Tardis? And which era of Tardis did he get back on? (Ie just after The Runaway Bride or not?)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 12:47 (seventeen years ago) link

What is the record for consecutive seasons with Daleks in them?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Matt, don't know and don't know. He was just talking to gappy-tooth Gwen then the doctor's hand that he keeps in a jar started glowing, then you heard Tardis noises and Jack's face was lit by glowing lights like when the Tardis appears and then he was gone. All happened off screen.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Wouldn't two RAF guys snogging in a dance hall in the 1940s have had the shit kicked out of them? I couldn't believe how everyone stood around watching them, and nobody showed any reaction whatsoever - not surprise, nor shock - I didn't think homosexuality was approved of like that back then.

I thought the last two episodes of Torchwood were rubbish, apart from the bit where Gwen was inputting the retinal scans into the computer to open up the time rift again, and a big warning message flashed up on the screen saying This Might Cause Structural Damage, either press "Okay" or "Cancel". I laughed out loud at that bit.

I also watched the Sarah Jane Smith spin-off, about the fizzy pop laced with alien molecules and the boy with no belly button. It was okay.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I enjoyed the Sarah Jane prog but I just hope that girls mother isn't going to be in it a lot because she's 1000000x worse than Jackie!!

pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 21:51 (seventeen years ago) link

CJ, I think there was supposed to be surprise and shock on their faces? esp with the way everyone else had stopped dancing and was staring at them.

In an ideal world the TARDIS that picked him up would be from wayyyy in the future, so they wouldn't be able to show the doctor, and we'd never get an explanation of what happened to him, he'd just pop back and go 'ah well back to work'. Somehow I have a feeling that that's not going to happen, though. :( The cgi in that final episode was pretty poor, too, I wish they hadn't used it but just suggested at everything with shadows and people screaming and that, I'm sure it would have been scarier.

b-b-b-but he's only a wee boy...

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 12 February 2007 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

The piece says just that - "The problem is Simm still looks 35 going on 15".

Oh, and did you know about this?

Although the BBC is planning a spin-off to Life on Mars - called Ashes to Ashes, set in the 1980s and starring [Philip] Glenister, Simm is bowing out. 'My instinct tells me not to hang around too long.'

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Monday, 12 February 2007 13:13 (seventeen years ago) link

And I hear Ricky Gervais has been cast as The Rani.

sede vacante (blueski), Monday, 12 February 2007 13:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, methinks that John Simm is bowing out because Sam will be back in 2006 by the end of the series, leaving Glenister to get a spin-off of Gene trying to implement Sam's touchyfeely policing once he's gone. Maybe. I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL TUESDAY FOR NU LIFE ON MARS.

xpost - DO NOT JOKE. Fucking Stephen Merchant turned up in 24 the other week!

They can't keep whipping through Doctors like this though, we'll run out! Next actor to do it has to have a four-season contract or something.

SandboxAnna (SandboxAnna), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Out of interest, how many episodes does it take before Life on Mars has done with the "A phone? In your pocket? You're havin' a larf!" bollocks that was in trailer? I'm not averse to the idea of the show, but the bog-standard time-travel hijinks put me off.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 12 February 2007 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Doc 11 should also be old and grumpy, if Rusty can bring himself to cast someone he doesn't fancy. I think Don Warrington would be good.

I rewatched the first episode of Life On Mars last night, and was disappointed that the writing was much, much clunkier (in that way) than I remembered.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I had thought I had posted about how they couldn't have Simon Pegg because he'd already been in it, then remembered that's not stopped them recycling Freema Agyeman.

I guess the same goes for Don Warrington.

(I stopped noticing the "OMG, white dogshit!" stuff about two episodes in - it was still there, but generally subtle, apart from "hilarious" discussion about Virgin mobiles)

I'd quite like Aiden Gillen as the next Doctor, assuming we're going for RTD faves, which tends to be the way of his things. Or Lesley Sharp, but that'll never happen. She'd make a good assistant though.
