virgil's root beer! i avoid most things called root beer like the plague because they're so watered down and crappy, but this one tastes like it was strained through a friggin' tree.

i had a disappointing experience with reed's cherry ginger brew, which tasted like ant poison and ginger ale.

If you drink Aussie shiraz - chances are I probably urinated on the vines it came from (esp. if it is a McLaren Vale 'un).

I just had a bit of port that's been sitting around in my stepdad's "cellars" for a couple of decades and booyah, that perked me up.

Lauren (lauren), Monday, 25 December 2006 01:47 (seventeen years ago) link

My greatest ever night, for which I set myself the challenge of getting completely hammered for the first time in, well, months, happened a few weeks ago. A compendium of the carnage:

1x pint of Grolsh, downed
3x shots (proper-sized shot-glasses too) of Wood's Old Navy Rum (the most poisonous drink I've ever tried, makes absinthe seem like orange juice, 57% proof), downed all within 5 seconds and within a minute of the Grolsh
1x pint of Grolsh, downed a minute after that

-a very slight gap to recover-

1x half-pint of Bailey's mixed with Guinness until curdled, downed (actually not as horrendous as it sounds)
1x pint of Smirnoff Ice and Blue WKD mixed together, downed within 30 seconds of the previous
2x small bottles of Cobra, drunk over the space of about half an hour between the end of the Smirnoff Ice/blue WKD and my inevitable rendez-vous with the mens' lavatory.

Then the occasional lapse into unconsciousness, captured here at a particularly grotesque juncture (worsened by some scandalous razor-neglect):

http://photos-402.ak.facebook.com/ip002/v56/43/120/36906120/n36906120_32144402_8401.jpg

All in all, not my finest hour. One I'm strangely proud of, nonetheless.

anointin' yr. pipe (Scourage), Monday, 25 December 2006 01:49 (seventeen years ago) link

unfortunately i don't have any smirnoff ice or old navy rum in the house so i am finishing the rodney strong cab i started last nite. then on to bigger and better wines!

scott seward (121212), Monday, 25 December 2006 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I lie about Wood's being the worst. The worst was actually either the chilli vodka I once inadvisably downed at a party or the Czech liquor that topped 80% proof and couldn't be drunk more than about a millilitre a sip.

Wines, Scott, such as...?

we twa hae run aboot the braes (get bent), Monday, 25 December 2006 02:54 (seventeen years ago) link

might have been, but I think the title might have been shorter. It was a dull browny-reddish colour (with a hint of orange) and tasted initially of very sweet aniseed. But then it burned. How it burned...

In the states we have this thing called "Irish Car Bomb" which is similar, it is half a shot each of Bailey's & whiskey in a shot glass, dropped into a 3/4 full pint of Guiness, which is supposed to be chugged before it curdles. Way fun.

Two 20-oz bottles of Diet Dr. Pepper.
A quart of iced tea sweetened with "two pink, one blue" and including two wedges of lemon squeezed in.
A 12-oz can of Diet Coke.
A glass of water.
A tiny little sip of some sparkling white wine, which is all I could choke down because I just cannot drink alcohol even if I really wanted to (& I did this time, because it's family tradition to imbibe in at least a little bit of the fizzy stuff for New Year's Day).
A small serving of sparkling grape juice, when I gave up and decided to reach for the non-alcoholic stuff (that was bought for the kids, but oh well).

We had 11 for NYE (7 adults 4 children) and we got through.

2 x champagne
4 x sainsbury's vintage cava (which i am slightly addicted to esp. at £4.99!)
2 x red wine
2 x white wine
5 Gin and Tonics
2 Margaritas
4 bottles of Sol
2 Laphroigs

And that was just the kids...boom boom!

Actually they drunk J20s of various revolting types.

Nothing too excessive I think. Obviously we are getting old.
