1-0 down after 1st test. A crushing defeat.

Can England come back? I can't see us bowling anyone out. It really could be 1989 all over again.
Can Harmison get his form back in the few days before the 2nd test?
I hope we play monty. We shouldn't drop Harmison though. He's been rotten before and bounced back.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 27 November 2006 23:58 (seventeen years ago) link

lalala, no one's listening.

great Ashington joke in guardian story "about" harmison today:

lass walks into an ashington hairdressers and says "can you do us a perm?", "aye pet, i wandered lernley as a cloud"

Stephen Hewitt (Carsmile Steve), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 11:58 (seventeen years ago) link

No monty picked but annoying that we threw away a few wickets again. The aussies don't seem to do that. Thankfully collingwood showed some restraint. A good knock so far. We need a couple of really big innings.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 1 December 2006 09:25 (seventeen years ago) link

It's nice that England played cricket this afternoon. It makes the Adelaide Test the best one in Australia!

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Friday, 1 December 2006 09:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Also: WHY DID WE WAIT TO PUT STUART CLARK IN THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM? FUCKING IMPRESSIVE!

I can't believe that Warney still impresses me, which he did by giving Bell a nervous breakdown before lunch.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Friday, 1 December 2006 09:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I think England need to make 500. I'm really not sure about our bowling at the moment. Anyway, today had some "good positives".

jel -- (jel), Friday, 1 December 2006 10:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Monty not being picked = HUGE mistake.

Satisfactory so far, but there's been too much happy talk on the radio after the day's play. We still need 200 more as an absolute minimum.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 1 December 2006 10:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Unless it's not a spinners pitch, I can't see how we will bowl the aussies out. I still have bad memories of 1989!

pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 1 December 2006 10:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe Jimmy Anderson will come good.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 1 December 2006 10:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Can't remember too many times when 250 or so was all that was scored in one day's worth of test cricket on a flat first day surface.

Glad to see Collingwood doing so well - need a big hundred from either him or Pietersen w/some good backing up - as Dr.C says 450 is a must.

Can anyone offer any theories as to why Monty hasn't been picked?

xyzzzz__ (xyzzzz__), Friday, 1 December 2006 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Team consistency, pitch not turning as much as was hoped (warne has been smacked about a bit)

Ed (dali), Friday, 1 December 2006 13:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Needing a back up seamer if Harmison is shite again?

pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 1 December 2006 13:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh I think Warne was turning it (when doesn't he?) but they were saying on the radio that he's not getting steep bounce, so the batsman has plenty of time to play him.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 1 December 2006 13:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Warne was getting decent bounce in the morning session and turning it rather well, but the bounce went out of it after lunch.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Friday, 1 December 2006 13:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I was hoping Fletcher would ditch Giles for Panesar and Mahmood coming in for Anderson and moving to no.8 to toughen up the lower order - so he could've played the Giles scoring 20-30 runs role. xxp

xyzzzz__ (xyzzzz__), Friday, 1 December 2006 13:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, Warne is bowling negatively. The aussies seem to be terrified of him. KP is playing very calmly and not done anything silly (yet) lets hope he doesn't do anything silly.
Also hope we don't throw any wickets away with silly shots and let the aussies back in.
Will be regret not playing Monty? Pressures on giles to take wickets.

McGrath clearly isn't fit. Looks like they banked on winning the toss, batting 2 days and letting his injury heal. Pressure on Ponting for only going with 4 bowlers?

Esteban, will the pitch crumble in the later days or will it stay a fine batting wicket like it is now?

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

It will crumble but not too much.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Today's play feels like we're back in the Boycott era. Thanks to Warney, no less.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh yeah and both men at the crease have hundreds but who cares about that? AUSSSSSSSIE!

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Warne is trying to bore the England batsmen. Unfortunately everyones bored and the crowd are booing.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I can see England playing like this with a spinner, it's almost expected with Giles, , but not Shane Warne, the greatest ever leg-spinner. It's almost like he's admitting he cant get KP out unless he plays a stupid shot. However if he does just that then Warney will say it's justified. But with Australia badly needing a wicket I'm sure the Aussie fans will be pissed off at negative tactics. Though Esteban can correct me here of course. But certainly the paying fans I would expect to be annoyed (hence the booing)

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:38 (seventeen years ago) link

The plebs don't understand, it's a "battle of attrition".

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, it's an interesting strategy. Australia don't need the win. Even if Australia goes to Perth just up 1-0, it is going to damage England. No as seriously as a 2-0 lead, but it isn't the position that England want to be in.

Adelaide is a dangerous place to play anyway, so I can see them playing it safe. Of course, that'll piss off the crowd to no end...

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Personally, I'm kind of enjoying this. It's a proper old-school test which could very well end up as a draw - a novelty these days. I wouldn't want to see this every test but Warney bowling around the wicket fascinates me to no end.

Shockingly enough, the Aussie fans are now blaming KP.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Fuck, they've got Jeff Thompson on telly and he looks 100 years old.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Shockingly enough, the Aussie fans are now blaming KP.

haha.

The one good thing to come out of it is KP has showed patience and scored a century without succumbing to a stupid shot like he's prone to do.

How would/will the aussie fans/media react if England used these tactics with Giles?

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I can understand why Australia are doing this, but I'm just surprised they're using these tactics.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:56 (seventeen years ago) link

"ENGLAND ARE BEING UNSPORTING, BORING, RUINING THE GAME OF CRICKET, THEY DON'T WASH, ETC."

Something like that.

Warney is trying frustrate KP into slogging it, but he hasn't taken the bait yet.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm surprised too.

MAYBE PONTING KNOWS SOMETHING WE DON'T

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 03:58 (seventeen years ago) link

It just doesn't seem the Australian way. Gotta be a boost to Pietersen to see even Warne being worried about him.

Do you think Stuart MacGill should've played? I can't imagine Warney bowling negatively when theres another leg spinner trying to get wickets.

*IF* KP stays there then eventually he will explode, even if Warne can bowl all day.

It's kinda sad to see England tactics here being used by Warne!

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 04:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Of course England aren't stupid enough to write off Warne & McGrath. So I suppose as long as Australia are winning no one will criticise them.

Hmm Lee is getting reverse swing. A wicket for Australia and they will hope to rip through England.

1000 runs in the year for Collingwood.

Also can we talk about how amazing Mohammad Yousuf is? 1788 runs this year at an average of 99.33. Awesome.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 04:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Well done Paul Collingwood! 203! Great knock. Thank god it wasn't a repeat of last test in the nervous 90s!

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 04:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Collingwood is FINALLY out. Why aren't they letting Clarke bowl more often?

Oh, and I think MacGill should have played.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 05:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Clarke has been very impressive.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 05:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Now when is England going to declare? I would play just a little bit into the afternoon session and get over 500. Then try and skittle one or two of the Australian top order before stumps.

Batting on any longer than that could set England up for a draw.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 05:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I think they will want 550 and maybe 7 or 8 overs against the aussie openers.
They might not get that if Warne bowls like he's been doing.
Warne is clearly hoping Pietersen will try push the run rate up and make a mistake. If there's no wicket in the next 30 mins we might see some fireworks however. Runs or wickets being thrown away.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 2 December 2006 05:48 (seventeen years ago) link

DECLARATION at 551.

Turns out Collingwood's 206 was the biggest ever innings by an Englishman at the Adelaide Oval.

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 07:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmmm. 8 overs. Will the openers risk going after Harmison tonight? If they knock him around his confidence will be gone tomorrow. Hand him a wicket and he could come steaming in like at lords in 2005.

Australia will be looking to score 600+ against an attack that's not as accurate as their own and hope Warne bowls England out 2nd innings.
Tonight's 8 overs could be crucial. The openers looked in good nick in the 1st test.

and

Can England get Ponting out?

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Saturday, 2 December 2006 07:32 (seventeen years ago) link

No swing last night or anything and the Aussies seem confident that the pitch is still great.

Australia coach John Buchanan insists his side can still win and take a 2-0 lead in the five-Test series.

The hosts piled up 602 in the first innings in Brisbane and Buchanan believes a score well in excess of that would put England on the back foot.

"Make 700 and bowl them out for under 150 on the last day," he said when asked what his team's strategy was.

"There's still a win on offer, there's three days to go, but we're not in a position to dictate that at the moment.

"Our job is to negotiate the new ball and, once we do that, hopefully we'll have a foundation.

If that happens you can bet Giles does a "warney".

pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 3 December 2006 00:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Well.... 65-3. Interesting game. But Ponting looks great as usual.

It's beyond depressing. Clearly Panesar should have played, as should Mahmood instead of Giles and Anderson, neither of whom should be on the tour. But they wouldn't have made any difference to the result as the batsmen fucked it up in the way that only England can.

FLINTOFF MUST GO (as captain)

Maaarghk C (Maaarghk C), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't think of anything that Flintoff has done particularly wrong as captain on the field, but I feel that he isn't really capable of inspiring the team as individuals and thinking creatively about ways to change the course of a game. He's too close to being one of the lads to get tough with say, Harmison. He doesn't have the detachedness of Vaughan and the coolness under pressure that you need to save/win tight games. Vaughan is a lot closer to a Brearley-type skipper than a tub-thumping 'follow me lads' type.

Harmison contributed nothing this game - again. Everyone searches for the slightest glimmer of improvement to try kid ourselves that he's the bowler of 2 years ago, but for now at least, it's gone.
Presumably the coaches have spent time with him and he's spent time on correcting his faults, but it's time to accept that it hasn't worked and he should stand down until he's back to what he was. A Harmison who bowls at 80 mph with no sideways movement is next to useless.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

This collapse was actually very 1995 wasn't it? bah! And Harmison has no confidence at all.

If Vaughan doesn't return, who should do it instead of Flintoff? Strauss would seem to be an obvious choice..

pfunkboy - THE CAPS LOCK ITS A JOKE ISN'T IT! Fletcher shouldn't go, at least for another year or two, and def not after this as it ws totally the fault of the players - again, who should replace him?

xyzzzz__ (xyzzzz__), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 16:25 (seventeen years ago) link

CAPS LOCK = LOCK CAPTAIN I.E. FLINTOFF OUT

Louis Jagger (Scourage), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think Flintoff should take all of the blame. His mistake is only going along with what Fletcher says. Would any other captain do it differently? I have no problem having freddie as captain when Vaughan is out.
The other players let england down too. Freddie leads by example with his bowling. Without him and hoggy we would be a lot worse.
Why Fletcher picked Giles And Anderson when they were out for a year is beyond me. Anderson and Giles do their best, so I can't blame them, but clearly you can't just come back in the team(unless you're the class of McGrath).
Giles injury has clearly hampered his fielding. He used to be great at cover. He just couldnt get up in the air to take that catch. If that had been taken we definitely would not have lost.
Had monty played we could've taken a lot more wickets.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 22:35 (seventeen years ago) link

"I don't think Flintoff should take all of the blame. His mistake is only going along with what Fletcher says. Would any other captain do it differently?"

I think Vaughan would, and Fletcher wouldn't object to that. As Dr.C says leading by example isn't enough - you have to tell Harmison his bowling is not up to scratch. However Flintoff appears to be doing ok. If Vaughan doesn't return then he has to be given time to see how well he could do - changes in the 11 will have to be made for Perth, but I wouldn't call for anyone to go or anything like that after this defeat.

I'll read some of the press later but it was a team (esp the top seven) failure, no single person's fault in particular. We would not have lost if someone were to stay in and score runs with Collingwood.

xyzzzz__ (xyzzzz__), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 10:46 (seventeen years ago) link

The Strauss decision was a disgrace and Pietersen was definitely hampered by his injury therefore his decision to try sweeping. But Cook and Flintoff failed, Bell was unlucky with a run out though I think it was his fault for hesitating as it wasn't his call. Jones and Giles are in for superior batting to lengthen the batting order and what did they score?

I think Jones has been fine and I wouldn't drop him to be honest, but Giles will never bowl anyone out, Monty will. Monty must play although it's too late and the heads will be down(a test of Flintoff as captain here to raise them) , Anderson I like but , like Giles, hasn't played for a year and , like Giles, shouldn't be playing for those reasons.

Im not sure mahmood is ready to play at this level but is a good talent for the future. I'd consider him and Plunkett if harmy plays badly next test and the ashes is over.

But no matter how well England play now, no matter what position they're in, they will always remember losing on the last day. Theres no way back this series.

Fletcher will be gone after the world cup i'm sure.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 11:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Next Test, I'd bring in Monty for Giles and Mahmood for Anderson. Possibly Read for G.Jones too.

If Mahmood isn't ready to play at this level, he shouldn't be on the tour. I suppose they could always bring in Stuart Broad from the academy, but that won't happen.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 6 December 2006 12:11 (seventeen years ago) link

You got your bowling wishes and they appear to have been the right choice. Mahmoud hasn't bowled much but has been relatively economical when he has. But today is about Panesar. I worry about how good Warne is going to be on this surface.

I dread them bowling us out for 100-200 and all our optimism is lost. A good score of 450+ would be a dream though. Lets hope no one plays any stupid shots and gets out. Make them get us out, don't hand them your wicket!

pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 14 December 2006 10:44 (seventeen years ago) link

The fact that we're 2 down already doesn't bode well. I fear the worst, and predict a sub-200 1st innings.

england bowling pretty well today (bar giving hussey TWO lives hahaha), but it's all too late. shoulda been playing like this from day one.

haitch (not haitch) (haitch), Saturday, 16 December 2006 06:37 (seventeen years ago) link

No luck for England at all really and we really needed it. Strauss given out in disgraceful circumstances two tests in a row then Hussey not given out when he did touch it.
Oh well, doesn't matter. The Aussies are just way too good for England.
Lets hope we at least show some fight and dig in and make 350 in 2nd innings so we don't lose by too much. But no doubt it will be another surrender for 100-150 as usual.

editio princeps (pato.g27), Monday, 18 December 2006 07:11 (seventeen years ago) link

that ponting run out was impressive - but losing the last 5 wickets for under 20 runs was pathetic.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 18 December 2006 08:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Well done Aus. Absolutely shit England, with the exceptions of Panesar, Pietersen, Cook and Bell.

Ultimately we don't care enough to be winners, we don't want do do the hard work, we're frightened of making the tough decisions. The teams to aspire to are Australia in cricket and the All Blacks in Rugby - tough, tough bastards and not afraid to fight.

English sport can't be like that, under the current system we'll win the odd tournament every couple of decades and then brag about how we're the best in the world, even when it's long been apparent that we're not. Giving players an MBE for winning a series or the rugby world cup - what the fuck? Maybe when you've defended the Ashes or the world cup a couple of times.

This tour was doomed from the start - how long have we known that Trescothick, Vaughan, Anderson and Giles wouldn't be up to the task? At least we didn't try and rush back Simon Jones. All the talk of Vaughan maybe being fit for the later tests should have been squashed - if you're not fit for the whole series and have proven to be so by playing at least part of the summmer, you don't travel. A hard decision - but it had to be made. Giles - you haven't played all summer and we have Panesar now - not needed (ever again). Anderson - likewise, clearly not ready to play in a series like this. Stuart Broad should have been there instead. G.Jones - we know he's not up to it, but he's a Fletcher insider - inexcusable. Leaving Panesar out - insanity beyond belief. Harmison - one or two decent tests a series is no good to anyone. Either shape up and get some consistency or get out.

Flintoff - not a captain. Too close to 'the lads' and doesn't have the cricket brain plus aloofness of a Brearley or a Vaughan.

It's not all gloom. The batsmen have stepped up at times and we have a good core line-up. We need to introduce a couple more to increase competition over the next 2 or 3 series e.g Joyce, Key, Shah. G.Jones must go now - Davies or Foster or both need to be tried out. Davies will certainly make a fine international cricketer given time. Seam bowling is the biggest area of worry - Flintoff is always going to struggle with fitness, Harmison with attitude and Hoggard can't go on forever. I think Mahmood may be good enough, but Anderson and Plunkett never will be. Stuart Broad looks a good bet, but we need another 3 or 4.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Monday, 18 December 2006 11:01 (seventeen years ago) link

We'll that ws always the problem - if injuries came in did we have the strength in depth? We only used 12 for the whole series in '05. Aus dumped Gillespie and Kasprowicz but they found the likes of Clarke and Hussey, even if you know they hung on to a cpl of others for too long, they had that injection of new blood. We had some of that to an extent but it ws yes for Cook and no for Panesar.

So we gave it back like we never won it in the first place.

(Dr.C - I'll add Collingwood to yr list, at least for the first two tests.)

And no more biographies or Ashes/World cup DVDs - maybe there should be a law against it all..its an interesting nu-millenium phenom. I guess its such a relief to see ANY brit winning or standing to the pressure exerted on him/her for FIVE SECONDS - like we know we're rubbish so let's enjoy it for TWO YEARS or so before we're back in the dumps bcz we know we will be..at least the whole world plays football so eng won't have this victim of your own success 'problem'.

It ws so hard to win it back in the first place - Aus might've taken it for granted, the selection ws a bit dodgy from then in '05 but it ws a hard fought battle then. But well done - they made the changes - Hussey and Clarke were awesome. Ponting might not be a great captain but it didn't matter when his opposite number ws probably more ineffective. There might've been a number of weaknesses but we'll never know.

Worse thing is it'll probably get worse before it gets better again as I don't think if, say, Vaughan doesn't come back (I don't think I even care anymore), Flintoff will get the sack.

Lets say if Fletcher goes - though I reckon him and Strauss could be an ok partnership, Strauss seems aloof and he did well enough - who would you replace him with?

xyzzzz__ (xyzzzz__), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd go for Strauss if Vaughan isn't going to make it. They should've done that before the tour, but Fletcher had idiotically stated to the media that Strauss was third choice come what may. To burden Flintoff with captaincy when he needed to be concentrating on form and fitness was wrong. But Fletcher etc dodged the tough decision.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Monday, 18 December 2006 12:17 (seventeen years ago) link

You wouldn't know it by the scoreline, but England has the potential to be a great team especially with the likes of KP and Monty in the XI.

There are three major problems for England:

- Australia will always have huge depth. Just look at the domestic competition. I expect a wholesale clearout after the World Cup but I don't think Australia will be in any trouble during that phase. The County Competition still needs fundamental change if it the ECB wants to develop a No. 1 Test Team. This is obviously long-term...

- Flintoff is not a captain. He's a class player but he's not a captain. And not only has he failed in that role, it has affected the rest of his game.

- Fletcher is crap. Get rid of him and you will see a drastic improvement in the English team. Yes, I'm big on hyperbole but it's TRUE!

editio princeps (pato.g27), Monday, 18 December 2006 13:54 (seventeen years ago) link

So, England persist wioth players who really aren't fir, or in form, neglect some players who have a worthy chance, and favour others who seem to have impressed the coach, but really no-one else. We have have a problem with some players becoming 'celebrity' players and thus undroppable, regardless of performance, which we make worse by having made them untouchable by dint of being captain.

I'm sure I've heard this before somewhere.
