Everytime someone tells me that SNL really is funny again, I end up watching some stupid piece of crap like this that fails to provoke a single grin, much less a laugh.

When will I learn?

OTM, but at least slightly funnier than Lazy Sunday, I think.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Monday, 18 December 2006 06:23 (nineteen years ago)

Natalie Portman rap > Lazy Sunday > this, I think. That's the entirety of my SNL experience in the last five years.

One of the youtube links led me to SNL's recut Apocalypto trailer. Unbelievably awful.

milo (milo), Monday, 18 December 2006 06:31 (nineteen years ago)

ok someone just showed me the natalie portman thing too. fuck these faggots imho. "oh hurrrr we are white yet we act black and canned laughter ensues". if I was joseph mengeles I would sew all these white bitches together

aidsy (aidsy), Monday, 18 December 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'd go Natalie Portman>D in a B>Lazy Sunday

I watched a few other skits on Youtube - it's sad when the musical guest is a better actor by far than anyone in the cast, and it's pathetic when that's not even saying very much.

But the "My Love" is a great performance all around. My opinion of JT has just gone up another notch or two.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=FgRImO7DLSg

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Monday, 18 December 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

as much as that lazy sunday pissed me off the natalie portman was so many levels worse.

(and that tragic timberlake makes great songs but can't sing - and what's w/the nearly constant begging for face punching - except you wouldn't cause it would really hurt the guy. imagine a young prince or r. kelly or even babyface or whoever singing my love, think of how sweet that would be).

also, what's with the 15-year olds coming to this thread to spew teh hate?

whoop de doodle (kenan), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

I laughed my ass off at this the other night while still kind of dreading the instant hype/backlash cycle it would inspire. It probably helps that when you see it on TV you have no idea what it's about until the chorus hits, whereas on the net everyone's going to click on it after already being told it's "the dick in a box song," which probably takes half the fun out of it. I still think Samberg is kinda corny and potentially the new Fallon, but having a good singer on this makes it work the same way that having a good rapper (Parnell) on Lazy Sunday made it work.

Kristen Wiig is great! some of her characters do kinda suck, though.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

"Is she the one who does that unspeakably painful Target employee character?"

jbr and map otm, this was funny and the show has been in a mini-stride lately (even the annette bening one had its moments). dudes it's snl, it's never like mindblowingly great.

it also needs more of Bill Hader who does the spot on al pacino. i really liked the "Al Pacino checks his bank balance". Im also convinced that Bill was once a chef in my work cafeteria.

urghonomic (gcannon), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

I've given JT plenty of shit about his voice in the past but not anymore. I think he's been working with someone to work out some of the inconsistencies and tightness that were in his sound up through Justified because even his falsetto is more secure/assured and relaxed than it was.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think it's so spot-on -- he makes Pacino sound like a southerner. (xpost)

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

There are people in this world who think that Natalie Portman thing is funny.

That just kind of blew my mind, to be honest. I can't hear this at work (or at home--anyone else ever have problems with YouTube not making sounds on their computer?? It's the only website that does this from time to time), but I am A+++ certain that it is funnier than the Natalie Portman thing or Lazy Sunday. It would be hard NOT to be funnier.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Monday, 18 December 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

This stuff is always funnier when it relies less on "look at white people doing black music/look at unassuming whites acting like agressvie/violent rappers" and more on actual punchlines in the song (which is why I thought "Lazy Sunday" was funnier than the Natalie Portman sketch, which I thought was mostly stupid except for Samberg in a viking costume).

That being said, you can't really find a better punchline than "It's my dick in a box."

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 18 December 2006 23:57 (nineteen years ago)

Also I think the biggest part of the funniness here is that if someone was like "I got you a present, girl ... it's my dick" that would be totally lame, whereas these guys are like "no, look, I wrapped it and everything, it's a dick in a box." These are guys who understand the value of presentation.

neither the writing nor the costumes are particularly funny. Timberlake's facial expressions and little gestures are pretty hilarious though. I mean you have two dudes working side by side with the same material and one gives a funny performance, one doesn't.

Yeah, Jimmy Fallon is funnier in context. In the context that he left the show, but keeps hovering around it because he's far too lousy to do anything else, and this is all he he has, and GIMME A JOB PLEASE! PLEASE! ANY JOB! That's fucking funny.

I mean, she didn't know exactly what was being said, as Japanese is very much her first language, but she knew what was going on.
Reminds me of the thread about people that didn't get the Colbert Report.
