Dan, on Friday night I was talking with D34n and R0bbie about schools (they both went to the U of MN). I mentioned that you had gone to Harvard for computer science. They wanted to know why you hadn't decided on MIT or similar if computer science was your intended major. I realize now that I should have said, "I don't know, maybe he wanted to be able to get a date..." (Er, no offense to MIT grads, of course.)

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Tuesday, 12 December 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Even no-name schools are expensive these days. The money thing is scary. Minnesota's most expensive (and prestigious) college, Carleton is now over 40K per year.

I see that Harvard had more attractive students than St. Mary's, St. Olaf, Carleton, and St. Kate's.

Certainly not. My point is that it is incredibly pricey, compared to say, the semi-pricey other private colleges. Even the public universities are getting to be kind of pricey.

(Full disclosure: my husband works at Carleton and I have two kids to send to college, but not for another 10 years, when college will be even more hopelessly expensive.)

my first class at Columbia me and this other dude who is now married and lives in Massachusetts and has a baby or something like that, anyway, we realized that at least three of our classmates had indeed killed people (former military from around the globe). this was a class of ten people, and that was kind of unsettling, especially since one of those people was the most incredibly batshit insane probably-going-to-lash-out-one-day-and-murder-the-teacher type of people you'd ever met.

I probably shouldn't be laughing at Dan's murderer-attracting ways. But I am.

John, possibly due to the drug issue, failed to mention the numerous naked people at Carleton in the early 90s. Carleton students were nerveless then. Or maybe that was drug-related, too.

Zing! Sincere apologies for any misapprehension I may have inadvertently encouraged. I was of course using the term "Columbia Men" in the traditional Ivy sense, with the attendent implication of leasy greens, gay pennants, secret societies, boathouses, elaborately coded scarves with secret flask pockets cunningly knitted within and such. per gabb, ladies have been afforded the opportunity to enjoy the full character-building benefits of the Core since 1983.

In keeping with time-honored tradition, I did indeed forget about engineering ::shame::

it wasn't until the early-mid-90s that most people had any idea Columbia existed

nuneb (nuneb), Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

I would say that's crazy gab but everyone I know significantly older than me is FROM NY so that probably skews things a bit.

nabisco I know this belongs on the other thread for us public uni turbos but NU definitely counts as Big Ten because I clearly recall peyton & co. destroying your ass in whatever crap bowl game we made it to my freshman year

LOL @ idea of Peyton winning a bowl game

bragging about beating nu in f'ball is on par with bragging about beating stevie wonder in raquetball.

well i'm exaggerating of course, but while Columbia was always a big deal in the tri-state area, it had a far lower national profile than some other ivies (or at least the big 3, tho maybe there's a reason for that (for at least two of them))

in general, city schools are far more popular/hard to get into now than they were in the early 90s and at least a decade or two before that. a lot of it is the change in culture/economy, but i also think it had something to do with how schools sold themselves. in the '80s, they were all defensive 'the city is safe; no really; Columbia /= Harlem'. then the year i applied (at the beginning of the rise, but before it really took off), the admissions brochure opened up to a beautiful wide overhead shot of midtown skyscrapers at night. plus, felicity and all that.

nuneb (nuneb), Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Felicity took place at NYU, unless you are implying Columbia's national profile raised due to the law school attendance of one felicity redwell. Which would make sense also.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha I still remember having a boyfriend who was like "Oh you should apply to NYU, it is so great, so awesome, best school" and I was like UH and apparently this was based entirely on his opinion of the tv program Felicity? That was when I was like, no more of you.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

only bowl game I think peyton ever actually won

TOM. BOT. (trm), Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i thought felicity was NYU (but wasn't there some show where someone went (off screen?) to columbia?), but the idea of college in NYC in general became far less big and bad. the effect has been even more pronounced at NYU.

actually, i'll bet that going coed so late in the game (cuz of barnard?) had a fair amount to do with being low profile.

nuneb (nuneb), Thursday, 14 December 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, weren't they one of the last hold-outs on that? I think college in NYC in general becoming less big and bad had more to do with Giuliani "cleaning up the streets" ie replacing Times Square with Sofia Coppola's idea of Tokyo than with TV :\

Yeah Tom Northwestern is in the Big Ten, but I meant it's kind of a sore thumb in there, what with being a medium-big private school among humongous midwestern main-campus status schools like Ohio and Wisconsin and whatnot. Northwestern's typical role is to lose to those schools at all major sports while trying to come up with glib cheers about how we'd be more valuable in the consulting job market? Except for that vague blip in the 90s you're talking about, where our football team was good, and Northwestern's whole profile changed up to the point where forget Felicity, friggin BUFFY got accepted, and would have come, too, if it weren't for the whole having-to-fight-vampires stuff. In any case, nobody should be bragging too much, football-wise, about beating the team that holds pretty much every statistically conceivable record for losing -- through the 70s and 80s the team's record was invariably like 0-11-1, with like consecutive winless seasons and everything. Like beating the fairly good mid-90s team would be an accomplishment and all, totally, but it's less of a triumph and more like you were having a beauty contest with Cinderella and the swimsuit part started at 11:59.

Now people who go from the University of Chicago ("Harvard of the Midwest") to an east-coast Ivy should pretty much have all rights to consider themselves Pretentious Ivy Fuxx0rs, only way more neurotic or whatever.

Northwestern is great for both CS and music! I stongly, strongly considered going there.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

I crashed a frat party at U. of Chicago a few months ago, it was completely hilarious.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Pardon me, that should say "state schools" -- I am in no universe claiming that Ohio is some fancy-pants "status school," as opposed to down-to-earth Northwestern. (Though Northwestern is fairly down-to-earth and midwestern, especially after that football blip brought incoming classes that were a lot more jocky and boring and American Pie-ish.)

Not to derail onto Northwestern topics, but yeah: music and CS both good there, and theater, and journalism, and basically any kind of science/engineering -- most significant campus trivia = the Tech building is the second-largest office-use structure in the U.S., after the Pentagon. (They built some sort of river inside it one year, to study soil erosion or something.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Northwestern is great for both CS and music!

Ha, a friend/arch-rival from high school went there to double-major in musical theatre and engineering. To nobody's surprise, that plan didn't last very long.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Which did he choose?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Engineering, I think. But he had a couple of plum roles in light-opera productions his freshman year.

That Wikipedia page may have been edited by this guy, quoted in today's Times:

pharmacist in Mogadishu. "But I hate Ethiopians even more."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

What the hell does that even mean?

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

huh, i didn't realize Penn, unlike Cornell, was in no way public (tho what i thought it was exactly i have no idea)

i don't think i ever watched saved by the bell? wasn't someone from 90210 or party of five or something headed there? i may be imagining this show.

the football team sucking was part of why i went to Columbia. Chicago was probably my third choice after there and Yale, tho I'm not certain I would have gone there in the end.

My guess? "Tubgirl >>> thought control >>> when yr Chex gets REALLY soggy >>> Goatse >>> Ethiopians"

Gabbneb, you may be thinking of the Jennifer Love Hewitt fake-Felicity thing? I wouldn't be surprised if they sent her to Columbia, since, like, Felicity had the other school staked out. (Though geezum Felicity is way more of a Columbia girl and Hewitt-character was way more NYU, with with her thumb-poky-sweater fashion-trending and all.)

Best way to think of Penn as a private school = do crossword puzzles.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

what is it with you and tubgirl?

maybe? perhaps this is why it has been blocked from my memory?

nuneb (nuneb), Thursday, 14 December 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Why ALL of these things haven't been blocked from all of our memories I will never figure out. These things are taking up space important information could be filling, like "Penn is not a public school."

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Thursday, 14 December 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

FYI, whenever I tell the charming story about the friend of mine who tried to pick up a girl at a party who was all, "Hmmm, tempting, but I've got something really important to do tomorrow"? That girl was Sinedu.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Thursday, 14 December 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Also, a girl I sang with in the church choir lived across the hallway from them and showed up a sobbing mess that morning, having been awakened by the screaming next door. She immediately called the police but sadly they arrived too late and she didn't think she could get through the door into their suite.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Thursday, 14 December 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

does anyone who went to an Ivy League school actually ever think 'I went to an Ivy League school'? (don't answer that)

yes, we do...only to wonder why it was they yellowbrick road somepeople paint them as.

in anycase..the value of any school is dependent upon what dept yr looking at and who (both faculty and students) are there with you...the rest is scarcely worth considering
