Jack Black

after being dragged by the wife to see "the holiday" yesterday, i've come to the conclusion that I hate Jack Black. Used to love JB...but I think he finally pushed me over the edge. In this festering turd of a film JB takes a serious role...for about 45 minutes until he must resort to his one trick pony show and do a stupid song about tweedle dees and deedle dees or something. I've had it. Discuss JB here.

thebingo (thebingo), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:03 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, one trick pony. occasionally the trick is funny, more often than not its overdone. Having seen School of Rock endlessly repeated on TBS recently I've come to realize how truly unlikable/assholish his "rock n roll" character really is.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

his fucking facial expressions make me cringe. i think i may have to watch his breakout performance in the 1993 classic "Airborne", to like him again.

thebingo (thebingo), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:11 (seventeen years ago) link

he was okay in King Kong. dislike and am really bored of his schtick otherwise.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Like it wasn't entirely predictable in High Fidelity that 15 funny minutes of Jack Black would make Hollywood say "Hey, three starring roles a year for this guy would be perfect!"

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

i really enjoy JB most of the time, but the "sing a crazy song all rocker style" is so fucking played out. nacho libre was halfway entertaining until the hair metal ballad entered the picture. i know that i will be dragged to this new one with cameron diaz and will be cringing knowing that the goofy-rocket-ballad is waiting around the corner any minute.

i wonder how long he went at it with peter jackson before PJ just let him "win" and filmed him singing some over-the-top ode to king kong with the full intent of destroying the film before it ever hit the editing room.

grady (grady), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't say I've ever liked a single movie where he's had a major role (nb I've not seen Nacho Libre, School of Rock or Tenacious D. - nor do I plan to), but I still have a strange affinity for him. I think maybe he reminds me of a friend from high school

will (will), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw School of Rock the other night for the first time and I was surprised by how much I liked it. Okay, his shtick is his shtick, but his character wasn't actually free of positive traits. He was nice to all the kids, and encouraged them. Plus, he was totally committed to rock. Which is commendable.

I have not seen him in many things, though, so perhaps it is best to keep the JB to a minimum.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I still like Jack Black a lot (especially in Kong & School el Rock), am heartily looking forward to the pairing of Jack Black & Mos Def in Michel Gondry's movies Be Kind Rewind and Masters of Space and Time or whatever they're called next year.

I watched "Shallow Hal" in a motel room once. It was painful.

I love School of Rock, and he's great in High Fidelity and loads of other things where he has little parts - (Enemy of the State, Anchorman, erm ...Will and Grace....). But I saw him gurning on the red carpet for something and thought, blimey, that would be a strain to live with. No wonder his wife plays the cello, it's supposed to be calming isn't it?

Ned T.Rifle (Ned T.Rifle), Monday, 11 December 2006 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

The thing about hating Jack Black is that it's almost as obvious as hating Tom Cruise; blah blah blah easy target no one cares etc. (btw I LOATHE TOM CRUISE and will go on about how much I hate him when given half a chance so I totally grok the impulse behind this thread, this isn't so much a "criticism" as much as it is a "Dan feels like posting something but doesn't feel like making a real point" thing)

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Monday, 11 December 2006 21:11 (seventeen years ago) link

The fact that he had a burrito thrown at him, which made him go into a dog-punting tirade is, for me, quite amusing.

i liked the tenacious D show (the ones airing after mr show). it was just really random loopy and absurd and wtf, perfect for late night viewing. once the album came out, the joke had gotten stale, due not in small part to the fact they kept recycling the same bits from the show. and they were still doing this with the movie!

I was wonding about him the other night when I caught a clip of School of Rock of TBS. I had never seen the movies or any of him playing a lead role. It just seemed odd that he has lead roles. Are there people who are Fans of Jack Black, do they wait for his next movie to come out?

uh, Jack Black tries to be repulsive, he's in show bidness.

Black is basically Belushi had he memorized Seven Habits of Highly Effective People instead of doing cocaine Brandoisms.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 13 December 2006 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Holy shit. Jack Black opens new paradigm & sharpens the saw? Can't really see that happening. Though since he is failing at being a joker, I suspect he gave up on the midnight toker front, too.

The fact that most of ilx agrees that Chris Farley sucked means it can't be all bad. I used to feel like I must have either been missing something or that the whole world was stupid.

I did like The Chris Farley Show though.

I so hate that laugh that Chris Farley would do. That same laugh that Peter Griffin does now on "Family Guy".

Abysmal movies, but Chris Farley is classic, if only for asking whichever celebrity happened to be on The Chris Farley Show, "Hey, did you see Die Hard?". This is still a great thing to ask people.

HAHAHA, I was just jokingly saying to someone that HF the musical probably had a song called "You're In My Top 5 Reasons to Live" and the truth was not far from that.

Also, anyone notice the "...chance of your LOO-OOO-OOOVE!" sounds suspiciously like "seasons of LOO-OO0-OOOVE!" from Rent?

My sister made me go and see the Holiday on saturday, Jack Black as a second string romantic lead is one of the more believable things in the film. It is a very very bad film.

two weeks pass...
Chris Farley was pathetic.

His humour was intended to insult the viewers instead of amusing them.

Alexander (Absenthino), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 11:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Though a lot of people enjoy being insulted, that's what the modern TV is about.

Alexander (Absenthino), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 11:31 (seventeen years ago) link

His humour was intended to insult the viewers instead of amusing them.

What does this even mean, honestly?

Farley had some incredible SNL moments - The Herlihy Boy, the Chris Farley Show, the Weekend Update 'air quotes' character ("maybe I'm not 'hygenic'... Maybe I don't use 'soap', etc.). A lot of his material was written by Bob Odenkirk, who is still a comedy god, awkward-transition-into-feature-films period notwithstanding.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Tiki Theater Xymposium), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Those are commercial jokes intended ONLY to keep the viewers watching.

I shared my oppinion, now it's up to you either share it or not

PS I like SNL but not Chris Farley.
