Tonight - Brixton Windmill
Tomorrow - Somewhere in Tufnell Park, right?

I know Kate's reading, no idea about the others, but I'm planning on coming to the Tufnell Park one. I have NO IDEA where it is.

On the offchance anyone else going is reading, I would be quite happy with a pint beforehand, depending when the band are onstage.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 09:09 (seventeen years ago) link

When poxy fuleness happen, we could come here!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 09:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh wow, a Shimuras thread I didn't even start. We are discussing who will go to Norf vs. Sarf on the Real ILX.

And burritos, mmmmm.

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 09:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Argh. The real ILX is slow and cumbersome and won't load anywhere near the end of the existing Shimura thread :(

I am faintly disgusted with myself for choosing North over South but Brixton is a bit of a pain for me to get home from anyway. There are other reasons for not coming tonight but they'll get me into trouble.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 09:59 (seventeen years ago) link

This is listing a new answer for the 25th at 3.33am but there isn't one showing.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Now it isn't, obviously, as mine is now the last message, but it was, honest.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeh, it was image flooding that I deleted directly so the message count is wrong

"no bra, wet dog" sounds like a great night in.

Sir Gregory of St.Kitts (g-kit), Monday, 27 November 2006 10:33 (seventeen years ago) link

My plans for this week are a bit up in the air at the moment but hopefully I'll be able to make this. Definitely be at the Pamphlet party next week though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 27 November 2006 10:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Kaet do you have any idea when you guys would be going on at the Pamplhet party - looking at my travel schedule and trying to see if there's anyway I'd be in town in time to come.

mitya's name, Monday, 27 November 2006 13:34 (seventeen years ago) link

No idea, but since we're headlining, I'm guessing about 10? I really don't know for sure, though. Would be lovely if you could come, tho!

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a lot happening that weekend, isnt' there?

Is it my imagination or is there a Poptimism on the Friday? And Gooblar gig on the Saturday?

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

yes it does seem quite busy. starting to feel a bit of trepidation about poptimism already - i'm sure people are quite nice, but I have the feeling it will be like crashing a party.

mitya's name, Monday, 27 November 2006 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

no way! it'd be great to mitya.

ken c, Monday, 27 November 2006 14:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha ha I interviewed Susanne No Bra about a year ago for ESM.

Fun gig, can't wait, will come.

sandbox suzy, Monday, 27 November 2006 14:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Cool. It should be an... interesting evening.

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Wet Dog are also Vic Godard's current Subway Sect.

Dr.C, Monday, 27 November 2006 15:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Mitya - we get new people and/or coming along to Poptimism every couple of months or so. Yes a lot of us know each other but it'll be very open and friendly, especially once the booze has started flowing and people have started dancing. Also we need to meet the Blue Russian.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 27 November 2006 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Am I right in thinking that the 6th is Pamphlet/Shimuras, the 7th is StenceFAP and the 8th is Poptimism, right?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 27 November 2006 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Uh-oh, I better check that there's not a conflict between Poptimism and my pretty boy ogling Gooblar's gig.

Wednesday is Pamphlet/Shimuras Xmas Do
Thursday is StenceFAP
Friday is Poptimism
Saturday is pointy nosed floppy blonde Rimbaud eyelashed guitar boys Gooblar's gig

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll miss Mitya due to being at BeardFest ATP :(

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 November 2006 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

As of right now:
Wednesday 29 Shimuras: I think I can come
Wednesday Pamflet/Shimuras: nocando
Thursday StenceFAP: my fiancee's birthday, so no.
Friday Poptimism: Quite possibly!
Saturday gig: Hmmm...I'll have to check my schedule.

Golo Bra, Monday, 27 November 2006 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Pls 2 bring yr guitarist on Wednesday, kthnxbye. ;-)

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, don't, because given my life, he will fall utterly in love with one of my bandmates and I'll drink a fish. :-(

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 16:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Drink a fish. Heh. I'll see him at rehearsal tomorrow night.

Pole Glider, Monday, 27 November 2006 16:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Drink a fish, wow, heh, why did I say that? That was a saying from high school days. One of my pretentious goff friends was writing bad French poetry, and one of the lines was something about "boire un poisson" which was supposed to mean "drink a poison" but actually meant "drink a fish" and it just stuck.

Especially considering I'm allergic to fish, and drinking one probably would have a similar effect to taking poison.

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I like that. I just assumed it was some idiom I'd never heard before (which I suppose it is)

Reeling in the Eels, Monday, 27 November 2006 16:29 (seventeen years ago) link

It's such a melodramatic teenage goff girl thing, somewhere between "oh noes, I'll kill myself" and "I'll drink like a fish - until the pain is gone!"

I think I must revive it.

We have rehearsal tonight. That is, if Dave Q has actually remembered this time.

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Argh, speak of the devil, he just emailed to tell us our rehearsal studio IS FLOODED!!!

Wow, we haven't caused a Biblical flood since that ill-fated Manchester gig. Though I still blame The Gossip for that.

masonic boom (kate), Monday, 27 November 2006 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I CAN'T WORK!!!!

I'M TOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 11:36 (seventeen years ago) link

It looks like my plans for this evening are rapidly going t1ts-up, so I might be able to come to this after all. What time are you on?

Warning - I may be in a suit, not to mention a massive sulk and looking for a prolonged bitch-session.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 12:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I may be back in time, hoorah. You can bitch to me matt I am in an irrepresably good mood at the moment.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 12:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, we found out what time we were on - I think it was 9.30? 9.40? I'd come earlier if I were you because the other bands look great.

Suits are most welcome. You know we all love a man in a suit.

Hurrah, are you bringing booze, Ed? ACtually, don't, becuase I will not be able to carry it and will end up drinking it instead.

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 12:42 (seventeen years ago) link

If I have finished transcription of interview subject (mein gott have I been procrasturbating) I can move on to the unmissable (I'm sure) paperback which the thingbringer brought: Grayson Perry: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl.

Other than that am looking forward to tonight MUCHLY.

g0000blar (g00blar), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

So I am not coming tonight, but assuming our departmental assistant doesn't bollocks up my flight and there are no air or underground delays, I should be able to make it to the Social in time for you next week. Yay!

mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 14:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I am back in an irrepressibly good mood again, a bi-product of which is that I won't be there after all. Definitely coming to Pamphlet though, so good luck and all that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 14:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Awwwww, please bring PBW... no, no, don't bring him. He'll only distract me. No do bring him, la lala laaaa laaaa, god I'll be writing a song about him soon.

Check out my badge that AMPy made me:

Yay, gig! Yay badges!

marianna longmire (marianna lcl), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

What, you want me to do real work, as opposed to posting pictures of badges and talking about cute boys? Come on!

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:03 (seventeen years ago) link

More talk about cute boys! I like cute boys. I like my cute boy.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Does anyone have a red guitar I can borrow?

I have suddenly realised that my entire outfit I am wearing tonight, down to my fingernails, is all red, and my guitar is green and gold!

I shall look like a Christmas tree!

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:13 (seventeen years ago) link

A very sexy Christmas tree!

Do post pictures, I'm sure the lot of you will look simply scrumptious!

Do you have three chords and the truth?

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Dear Mr. G00blar,

Pls 2 bring to gig tonight:

1) 1 guitar (red)
2) 1 guitarist (pointy-nosed and blond)

Errr... maybe if I'm really lucky, I can get you or Jim to play the whole set for me, as well, and then I won't have to do *any* work! Hurrah!

masonic boom (kate), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Aaaaiyyy!!! Lookit the time! I should be going to soundcheck soon.

God, I hope the other bands brought a guitar amp...

g000blar (g00blar), Thursday, 30 November 2006 14:27 (seventeen years ago) link

BTW can anyone remember the name of the band that headlined on Wednesday? They were possibly the most Lex band ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 December 2006 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Ebony Bones, like what it says on the flier.

Ed (dali), Friday, 1 December 2006 11:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the lex would implode in a puff of contradictions.

Ed (dali), Friday, 1 December 2006 11:25 (seventeen years ago) link

They were possibly the most Lex best band ever (except for Shimura Curves, obvs)

Fixed.

g0000blar (g00blar), Friday, 1 December 2006 11:34 (seventeen years ago) link

To be honest I missed most of the set, because I saw a man with a beret and thought they were going to be horrendous funk rock nonsense. Bad move.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 December 2006 11:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, actually they were wicked funk rock nonsense.

g0000blar (g00blar), Friday, 1 December 2006 11:38 (seventeen years ago) link

They weren't funk rock at all. They were 60s Motown/dirty garage with a side helping of ESG. They were very, very good. And I think they would make the Lex's head explode.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 1 December 2006 12:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Good helping of dancehall sensibilities as well.

Ed (dali), Friday, 1 December 2006 12:22 (seventeen years ago) link

they sound potentially great!

lexpretend (lexpretend), Friday, 1 December 2006 12:22 (seventeen years ago) link

they have no myspace or website I can find, I want to see them again.

Ed (dali), Friday, 1 December 2006 12:23 (seventeen years ago) link

OK that is a lie, I couldn't find a myspace for them when I was drunk and tired on wednesday night.

Ed (dali), Friday, 1 December 2006 12:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Stop talking about how brilliant they were. Talk about how brilliant *WE* WERE some more people! Humph!

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 1 December 2006 12:33 (seventeen years ago) link

God, they seem to play an insane amount of gigs.

Don't these people have jobs?

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 1 December 2006 12:34 (seventeen years ago) link

So you still think you're going on around 10pm, shimuras?

substitute, mitya for him (mitya), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 13:13 (seventeen years ago) link

No, apparently we're going on at 9.30 exactly.

At the moment they're saying that we're only playing 5 songs. Which is a bit... HUNH?!?!? since we were told 30 minutes before, and 5 of our songs is only 15 minutes!

If we *do* only get 5 songs to play, any requests?

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 13:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe they thought "Shimura Curves = prog = 6 minute songs"

Johnney B has zeros off the line (stigoftdumpilx), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 13:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Rivers of Clerkenwell, Mother, Sticky & Brown, Magnus, Noyfriend.

Easy :)

Although I think that probably clocks in at about 10mins. Prog Noyfriend out for ages.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 13:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Like, most "rock bands" songs are about 5 minutes long. So 5 songs plus about 5 minutes of faffing = half an hour.

Our songs average two and a half to three minutes long, and they're all on a sequence to minimise faffing. When I say 8 Songs = Half An Hour, I mean, 8 song sequence = 29 min 48 seconds! I think we've won that discussion.

Wow, we haven't done Lost Rivers in ages! We were going to do an Elephants revival, but I don't think we have time. :-(

Sticky and Noyfriend are both on The List.

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I was kind of joking, but I think you should do 8 'proper' Shimuras songs rather than 7 plus Bizarre Love Triangle. I mean it's obviously one of the most amazing songs ever etc but I'd much rather hear an all-original set.

(I think you should do Lost Rivers AND Elephants personally, but then I am old-school).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

The girls don't like performing Lost Rivers because it's mostly instrumental except for little bursts of singing, which means they stand around taking their coats off.

Elephants revival might still be the way forward (I can't remember exactly how long it is, though - is it under 3 minutes?) but I promised my sisX0r she could do guest vocals on BLT, since she had to live through the worst of my Bernard Sumner obesssion.

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:07 (seventeen years ago) link

'lost rivers' is like my favourite shimura song!

lexpretend (lexpretend), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

really? Hunh. I would have thought (Just Keep My Name) Out Of Your Blog would be.

Damn, which reminds me I forgot to remix a less distorted version because the bassline on that thing rips speaker cones.

We only have two songs over 4 minutes - Stronger and BLT.

Would it be cheeky to do a set that doesn't include the single?

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Plus, you know...

DANCING BOYS!!!!!!

http://static.flickr.com/110/314157182_f15ddb5447.jpg

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

you know, the dancing boys does nothing for me (although that's probably not the point, is it? :)

ack, 9:30 will be tough, methinks.

substitute, mitya for him (mitya), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh noes!

Sorry, that dancing boys picture is my new Favourite! Thing! Evah! I've wanted dancing boys onstage with me since, like, I was 12 or whatever and saw my first Madonna video.

(If dancing boys don't do it for you, surely you can look at the hott girlz in the band?)

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

really? Hunh. I would have thought (Just Keep My Name) Out Of Your Blog would be.

i like that but haven't heard it very much i guess...'sticky and brown' is my second favourite (slightly more predictably)

lexpretend (lexpretend), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Lost Rivers is also my favorite. And I also think ending on BLT is too... easy?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:34 (seventeen years ago) link

bah, I cannot believe I cannot find a better picture of that video that made me want dancing boys than this:

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Ending on BLT is great but Noyfriend is the best set closer ever because it has that noisy guitar bit + the dance. You should do it as... an encore!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:41 (seventeen years ago) link

(Problem is, the last song is always that one that gets cut if there are problems and the set runs over - I don't mind cutting BLT but I would very much mind cutting Noyfriend.)

masonic boom (kate), Tuesday, 5 December 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't believe this is tomorrow night! Y'all should come since the Pamflet ladies throw kick-ass parties.

June Ping Pong - call her by her name!

Speaking of stylin', I've just realised I didn't brush my hair this morning!!

The shame! I feel so naughty! But that's what you get when your money is occupied NOT RECIEVING YOUR PROMISED DELIVERY.

Sarah (Science of Unforunate Events), Thursday, 7 December 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, I might as well announce this here before the rumours get out.

The show last night will be the band's last.

Shimura Curves are over. I quit last night. Marianna quit this afternoon.

Thanks for your support.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 7 December 2006 21:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Everything good comes to a natural end and I think that's happened now.

Cheers girls, it was a lot of fun. I'll remember these songs, and those performances, as long as I live. And when I think of 2006 they'll be among the first things that come to mind. It was awesome.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Friday, 8 December 2006 08:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, you can't split up until you've had a run of at least 3 top 10 hits. And I reckon you could have had them - I'm serious. Sod all this 'natural end' business - STICK AT IT! You have something very special - real pop smartness, great songs, you look great and you stand out from the other dross without even trying. Don't chuck it all away AGAIN Kate - this could have been the one, and now you'll never know. The world is full of people who had 'a great band' once (ha I should know) but packing it in is always the easy way, sticking it out through the bad times because you believe in the music is harder, but it's the only way. And your music is worth believing in.

Of course I don't know what the reasons are, and it's none of my business, but I'd bet there's nothing that can't be quickly fixed by talking it through.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 8 December 2006 09:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Dr C OTM - I'm sure there are all kind of reasons why this is for the best, but disproving the Shimura Curves Hypothesis makes me sad.

Johnney B has zeros off the line (stigoftdumpilx), Friday, 8 December 2006 09:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm laying off the 'hypotheses' as I have no idea.

My guess is "give it 3 months off" and maybe then it'll resolve, whatever it is.

Maybe there will be a 'statement' sometime.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Ack

substitute, mitya for him (mitya), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Things don't resolve - you resolve things.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks for saying nice things about the band, guys. I (and I'm sure the others) really appreciate it.

I'm sure there will be statement at some point, when we've discussed it. Until that time, could you please respect the privacy of the five of us, as a band, and as people, and keep the gossip and the hypothesising off public forums?

Thanks.

masonic boom (kate), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Things get less important with time.

Anyway, I'll lay off the 'hypotheses' even though. (xpost exactly)

M Grout (Mark Grout), Friday, 8 December 2006 10:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't see any gossip and hypothesising, Kate. (I might be looking in the wrong place though).

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 8 December 2006 11:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, stop before it starts, probably.

I was thinking about starting a "so how did your band fall to bits (gloriously or not)" but maybe not a great idea for the moment...

M Grout (Mark Grout), Friday, 8 December 2006 11:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Latest gossip: That bloke everyone saying Pete Doherty murdered. One of the members of Shimura Curves actually murdered him.

Out of respect for the band, I won't name which member did it at this point in time!!

[electric sound of] esteban buttez (Estie Buttez), Friday, 8 December 2006 11:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, and considering two of the ladies aren't even ILXors (and therefore probably have no idea about this sandbox), I don't think it's particularly fair to have any sort of a forum about it here.

I think you should carry on until you have no original members, like Soft Machine or Dr. Feelgood. That should be the ultimate aim of any band.

amon (amon), Friday, 8 December 2006 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay a couple of people connected with the band have requested I lock this thread for a bit and, as its by extension a thread about them themselves, I'm going to do that.
