worthy foreign film, i'm going to return you after two and a half months of sitting unopened on the kitchen table so that i can get back to watching old episodes of the wire.

ha, i have an unwatched netflix in my bag right now that i've been meaning to return since september.

paresthesia hilton (get bent), Friday, 8 December 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I called in sick on Tuesday from work, and used the downtime to rifle through 4 movies that had (mostly) been sitting since, like, JUNE. Yikes.

I am not getting anywhere with His Girl Friday, shamefully.

For me, I think War of the Worlds and The Thin Red Line hold the record for longest unopened and never watched.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 December 2006 20:49 (seventeen years ago) link

no, i don't think he's in it. it does have david carradine and a very young sylvester stalone.

it's completely ridiculous. and great.

d'oh - i just looked it up. totally different movie. i was thinking of terror 2000.

This happened to me... It was Kiezlowski's "Blue" I think and i kept meaaaaaaning to watch it but never did. I checked it out a few months later from the lib and needless to say was amazed.

I also accidentally sent them my first disc of Upright Citizen's Brigade Season 1 and am most certainly keeping their 7 Up/7+Seven disc

Not netflix but I've had a friend's copy of Amores Perros for months and months and months. It looks kinda depressing and I never feel like watching it (esp. as I now have an endless stream of netflix).

I'm the worst, I tend to be the type who, on the rare occasions I just flat out forget to send a movie back, I start reporting the damn thing stolen and insisting I get a new movie straight away. It's a wonder they haven't shut me off.

Kyle, do these same people list their favorite Netflixes on their MySpace? (Argh, "their MySpace" doesn't even sound wrong anymore!)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 December 2006 21:52 (seventeen years ago) link

How do they know what I'll HEART? This is my biggest problem: you can recommend something, please, be my guest. You do not know me better than I know myself, and damn you, Netflix, for departing from your smart business model and quality service that I'm happy to pay for, and taking it just THAT MUCH too far into slimy advertising and language-poor territory.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 8 December 2006 21:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Their recommendation system is terrible anyway, it's like you rent one "children's" flick and you get nothing but 47 versions of the Lives of Thomasina recommended to you for 3 months.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (Allyzay Ei, Friday, 8 December 2006 21:53 (seventeen years ago) link

so true.

I would HEART not being throttled by netflix.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 8 December 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

HA. with my current rate of return, i'm in no danger of that.

Lauren (lauren), Friday, 8 December 2006 22:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, I'm amazed there are people out there worse than me with Netflix. I did finally send back three recently, and I just got Style Wars, a disc of season 4 Simpsons, and Badlands, all of which I am very excited about. I also didn't get to watch the Weather Underground doc from the last batch, but at least the wife did.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Friday, 8 December 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Style Wars and Badlands are both pretty awesome.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Friday, 8 December 2006 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, Leslie Stahl didn't even bother to bring the throttling up on 60 Minutes.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2006 22:51 (seventeen years ago) link

"[T]he wife"!!! Has that gotten old yet?

Well, it's not so much funny anymore, but it still always strikes me as surreal - whenever I say "my wife" I feel like I'm talking about someone else. Even more so for "father-in-law" "sister-in-law" etc.

Hurting (A-Ron Hubbard), Saturday, 9 December 2006 05:20 (seventeen years ago) link

*Wifey* and I watched the Kamp Krusty and Streetcar episodes tonight. Ah, so classic.

Nothing to do with netflix, but I've had a VHS copy of The Exterminating Angel since about 1997 that I've never watched. We got a bunch of Buñuel films in at work and I felt a pang of guilt.

i just last week sent back three films when i realized that two of them were mailed to me last dec. 8 (the third was sent me in march). i didn't want to cross the year threshold. i basically stopped watching movies in '06 except for the ones i had to watch for a thing i was working on, but for some reason it didn't occur to me to stop paying netflix for the privilege of not watching movies. anyway, i've resumed my dvd consumption and i'm gonna make up that $240, just wait.

tipsy mothra (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 10 December 2006 07:31 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, time is such a factor. if it's over 110 minutes, it pretty much ends up on my defeat list automatically. it took me three rentals and wisdom tooth surgery until i finally sat down and watched andrei rublev (which was worth it, obv).

I gave my bf a profile and one of my three disks so he would stop complaining about what I was getting. First thing we get in the mail off his queue is a movie we saw in the theater. *sigh*

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Well at least now I know why I haven't gotten Koi...Mil Gaya even after it's been #1 in the queue for more than six months. They should give out numbers of people who have been sitting on the same netflick* for forever to the next people in the queue.

*term not exactly applicable in this case as I use Blockbuster online (sub-netflix at best).

We watched 49 Up last night, and the Ebert interview with Apted. Some angrier at 49 than others, and some very happy surprises after 42 Up. The Adventures of Baron Munschausen for tonight; we watched Brazil and Time Bandits a few weeks ago.

Has anyone else watched Primer?

I'm guilty of queueing up "movies seen in theaters", because I think Ha! I want to see that again. But then the disc shows up and sits because really, I don't. People who waited for 5 months to get Dirty Pretty Things, it was me, I'm sorry.

jaq (jaq), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i've given up on netflix after being a loyal customer for 4 years....the throttling of my account was getting ridiculous. never could get a new release and recently movies were taking 3-4 days to get to me rather than 1. Also, sending a movie back and it showing up as returned 3 days later is bs. im trying blockbuster total access for a bit to test it out.

thebingo (thebingo), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:43 (seventeen years ago) link

'm guilty of queueing up "movies seen in theaters", because I think Ha! I want to see that again.

that I don't have a problem with. But G. put this on his queue not remembering we had seen it. And it was a movie we didn't even really like (You, Me and Everyone We Know).

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost yeah the throttling would be ok if it was temporary, but I first got thr0ttled in July or so and it's never quite gotten back to normal, even after I slowed down of my own accord.

my girlfriend and i are in a constant struggle over netflix, i want to watch everything within a week of getting it, she hems and haws and procrastinates until we've had it for at least a month. if I pick something I try to make sure right off if she has any interest in watching it, and if not then I get through ASAP. but sometimes she'll pick something, and then will put it off and occasionally will ultimately decide that she doesn't want to watch it at all (this happened with Eternal Sunshine, i'd seen it already and she hadn't, and let it sit in the apartment for 3 months before finally sending it back). drives me insane.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I go through movies fast and have never been "throttled". But that may be because there is a facility in Queens?, so it is pretty hard for it to take more than a day unless it is over the weekend.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:55 (seventeen years ago) link

(Xpost) Solution: get separate queues. The inefficiency of occasionally repeating the same movie will be dwarfed by the lack of strangling.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Yep, as soon as the netflix software or whatever the fuck it uses catches on...although it took a good three years before it started happening to me. i wrote them and complained and got a standard stock email about how they strive for the best possible experience signed by "the debbie". I wrote back and told "the debbie" to eat shit. maybe this is why i get throttled...

thebingo (thebingo), Monday, 11 December 2006 17:57 (seventeen years ago) link

We blew threw Bringing Up Baby, Smartest Guys In The Room and Miami Vice on Saturday! Miami Vice was terrible, oh my GOD. And put them in the mail yesterday morning! Let's see how fast it takes them to start throttling us again.

We watched Marathon Man last night - we'd had it for at least a month. I find the way to beat Netflix is to be unafraid to send something back that you know you aren't going to watch. I'm in the middle of finals and anxious enough so Inconvenient Truth went right back to the distribution center in exchange for The Apartment.

Lance Rock (pullapartgirl), Monday, 11 December 2006 18:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Blockbuster online has been surprisingly pleasant regarding A) the phenomenon of the delivered-broken Eerie, Indiana disc 1 debacle, and B) the delivery of the bonus discs in place of the actual film discs of the following: Comic Book: The Movie, Dr Strangelove. Now ideally we would be receiving A) unbroken B) correct discs in the first place, but hey, service with a (phone) smile!

I've had Gremlins 2: the new batch sitting at my house since June. Sad thing is, I actually DID watch it, but I lost the sleeve and just didn't bother trying to solve the problem. Finally found the sleeve about a month ago, but then a friend wanted to borrow it. Now I'm bugging him to return it. I AM TERRIBLE AT THESE PROGRAMS; I had joined netflix once before as well, a few years ago, I had "the prince and me" and "bad santa" for like 4 months

maunders (maunders), Monday, 11 December 2006 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost Netflix is good about scratched/broken/missing disks too (in fact reporting a mistake on their part seems to trigger an anti-thr0++le mechanism, at least temporarily).
I know it's smart to just send back something I'm not keen on watching but it takes a long time for logic to kick in. I did it with Amarcord finally after 4 months but most of the time I just procrastinate and then steel myself and slog through the movie(it rarely ends up being the slog I think it is of course).

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 11 December 2006 20:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh Netflix pissed me off this week. I wanted a specific movie to watch on Christmas/Christmas eve and it was listed as "Shipping Today" from WEDNESDAY of last week through Tuesday. So Tuesday I asked if they could cancel that and just send the next movie on my list, since it hadn't been processed for almost a week and it was past time that I was hoping to have it for anyway. As SOON as I complained about it, the movie changes to processed and I am told that it is impossible to do this (like, literally, while I'm on the phone with customer service, they "Hmmmm hmmmm hmmmmmmm well...ah...hmmmmm" for like 5 minutes and then "Oh, it's being shipped!" UH). I kind of want to weight down their postage-paid envelope a little, since they apparently like wasting so much time and postage :(

or an ass-beating machine in high school?

I am battling against NY Public Library defeat by all the TV series I have out right now: Deadwood, Cracker, The Office (UK, the last two).

Oh man, Viggo plays such bad-ass bad-asses.

Viggo was great (the very last shot of him-as-Joey is A++), but the movie never felt like it coagulated together especially with the wife/son stories. A better actress (Maria Bello = ick) could have pulled it off, but in the end Bello was one-note shrill.

I carried Constant Gardener across three provinces and 4 months before finally just breaking down and admitting that I'd rather read the book than watch a three-hour movie starring him from the English Patient.
Also BOO to Zip (Cdn Netflix) for not making more clear which French movies DO NOT have subtitles. I was SOOO looking forward to a La P'tit Vie marathon.

I burn all of my received movies within 12 hours of receiving them, I've become obsessive about it. After two years I have boxes of coverless burned discs. My friends borrow them, they are so happy.

Wait, did I just admit that?

I've heard of people doing that. That's like defeating Netflix ... excepting for the part about not having watched a whole bunch of discs. In that sense, it's super Netflix defeat.
