ILX: Nearly out of the desert wastes

Howdy all:

Just to update everyone, the new server (henfap) has been bought and configured with ILX. It works pretty well, too -- when I'm the only one using it, at least.

FedEx picked it up this morning, and it'll be in Canada by Friday. The new hosts want a couple of days to unpack and dust it off, so we should have full ILX goodness restored next week.

The shipping costs have been met by a generous anon ILXor, although the final bill's not in so we may have a shortfall. In case the bill's huge, there's a mod discussion going on just now about running ads for a short time, or perhaps a donation link or the like.

There is a non-intrusive google ad plan where we can get cash from the google search box results page, which I'll test out here sometime tonight or tomorrow to see if it's shit or not.

As for the new code: Keith can tell you more, but we'll start a beta test once we're sure the new server is as stable as it can reasonably be with ILX on it. Ahem.

Well done everyone!

Unfortunately, I don't think this sandbox is any use for testing new code, for reasons the ISP are best at explaining.

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 10 December 2006 23:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Gerry: we were getting a discount price with better service and better spec, and it actually worked out cheaper to get it here, especially since we should be able to reclaim VAT (pre-VAT price is cheaper than Canadian one).

The new code will have to be tested on the live server, aye.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

dere stet. please look into the IRC part too. yores, grimly.

grimly fiendish (simon), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I wouldn't see a major problem with some sort of IRC, but why not just use a public server?

KeefW (KeefW), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

IRC is a bit of a bloody security-hole mess these days and it's still too techy for less-computery ILXors. It'd end up as I Love Arcane Commands. Does anyone know of anything better?

stet (stet), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Not that's obvious. I don't follow these things much, though. Others probably do. I could write one; it'd take a bit of time. Might be an interesting thing to do, though. Could link it into ILX too maybe and highlight users that were currently logged into chat.

Still, it's hard to write something that has a kind of zero installation thing, for the non-techy. It could be a web thing, but it'd put a fair bit of strain on the server. Even an applet would have people downloading the latest JDK, though I think at least it'd probably do it for you.

KeefW (KeefW), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I think most folks are OK downloading an app. Does Jabber support chats?

stet (stet), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Coursre all this academic right now :(

stet (stet), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not any sort of Jabber expert, but I think it's an open peer to peer protocol, rather than a client-server thing. Though I'm sure it could be bent into doing this sort of thing, it's hardly worth it, as it doesn't do much for us in this situation.

The protocol itself (in a basic sense) is extremely simple: everything anyone sends to the server gets sent back out to all connected clients.

The trick's in writing something that doesn't use a thread (or worse, a process) per connected client, which means that a fairly limited number of users could use the thing at once, since threads use something like 1MB each.

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 31 December 2006 16:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, after discussions, IRC probably does rock. If someone can get the code for Aunt Sadie I'll do it.

But only after the nu-code's running, as two instances of ILX will be enough to be getting on with.

stet (stet), Sunday, 31 December 2006 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

So what changed in between then and now?

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 31 December 2006 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I can tell that I'm going to install mirc and then see in 2007 in the company of virtual Keef and virtual Stet and getting insults flung at me by a robot. Marvellous.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm now quite tickled by the notion that, as if ILXers don't spend enough time insulting one another, you now want to build a robot that does it as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

/me forgets how irc works

/invite fishbot #ilx

Onimo wants ops (nu_onimo), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Hahah OPS! And / commands!! /me cackles and slaps you all with trout. Yes, THIS is what ILX has been missing.

Laurel (Laurel), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I keep getting "unable to resolve server" whenever I try to connect. I've just remembered why IRC sucks.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Firewall?

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

This might be what Stet was talking about.

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Is that like a snowball? Don't mind if I do!

(yes, I never thought of that)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

the london undernet server seems to be working. everything else i've tried "cannot resolve."

molly mummenschanz (molly d), Sunday, 31 December 2006 19:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Onimo drank ALL the wine! (nu_onimo), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I've just been out in the street to catch my bins which were blowing away. This wind is mental.

Onimo drank ALL the wine! (nu_onimo), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Ailsa, are you still fucking about?

KeefW (KeefW), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I scrolled down servers to undernet then clicked on "random eu server" i think. Then /join #sinister

Onimo drank ALL the wine! (nu_onimo), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm trying random eu server and failing dismally, with or without the firewall bit on Norton turned off.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Sunday, 31 December 2006 20:15 (seventeen years ago) link
