Anyone got the skinny on the Real ILX coming back?

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 10:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Nope.

Lucy Alder (Madchen), Monday, 14 August 2006 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Yuk, something went wrong there.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 14 August 2006 13:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Markleby's been on vano.thehold.net grousing too.

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 13:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Hoyl crap it's back.

4590469 messages in 126053 threads. 12793 registered users.

I wonder if that has anything to do with it

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 13:47 (seventeen years ago) link

If it was back, it's not any more.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 14 August 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Yep, it was back long enough for me to see the front page.

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey. I guess that means someone's working on it, then?

Mark C, Monday, 14 August 2006 15:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know -- there's been no noises from anyone I've heard. Perhaps it's just dying, not completely dead.

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

fuck.

Is that your contribution?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Real ILX has been down so long that this place has replaced it in my URL autocomplete box. :(

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 15:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Is that your contribution?

yup. sadly, i can think of nothing more useful.

gf, Monday, 14 August 2006 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe Andrew is seeing how many emails he gets as a test of our ILXLove?

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha! This place is up for less than a day before it gets poxy fuled itself

stet (stet), Monday, 14 August 2006 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

It has replaced my autocomplete thingy too.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 07:59 (seventeen years ago) link

As soon as I saw ilxor in the Observer I thought it would be bad news but I didn't realise it would have this impact - newspapers! who'd a thought?

Having said that I was getting poxy fuled more often recently anyway.

we missed out on such a big opportunity. if we made the NUILX donations like a big thing on the front page, and made it to cost £5 per registration JUST BEFORE the observer article, we can probably afford to run ilx on a dedicated OC192 line.

ken c, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 13:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't understand how the Observer thing can have such a detrimental effect. On Sunday and Monday maybe when there's a spike of interest but usually these things tail off pretty quickly and more so when you can't access the board.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 13:56 (seventeen years ago) link

pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 13:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I screwded up my first registration, so now I'm called M for some reason.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Hi M. I'm C.

C J, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Whee! I'm in, it seems to work!

I didn't think anyone read OMM, anyway. Perhaps pulling the site down is their revenge for all the snark martian and Marcello tossed their way over the last few years?

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

right who's going to start the first evah THEHOLD-ILX FEUD with me??

ken c, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:08 (seventeen years ago) link

pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:10 (seventeen years ago) link

You've said his name, so it won't be long.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Ken won't have long to wait then.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

is the observer mention online? i can't see it on their webpage...

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently it's only in the print version? I didn't buy a copy yesterday, so I don't know for sure.

Norman Phay (Pashmina), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

It's in the review section. It's a tiny single line mention in a sidebar. NO KITTY chooses her top five music sites. ILX is the first.

I find it a bit hard to believe that it was enough to cause an outage, really. But who knows.

JimD, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, it seems pretty weird to me, even if they'd done a big feature on it, bigger publications than OMM have covered ILX more prominently without it pulling the site down.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Didn't Ned's infro from Andrew say that it was a lot of hits from a specific UK referrer which caused ilx to fall over? Cos if the Observer piece didn't even include the ilx mention in its online version (and it didn't, it's here), then that's enough to disprove that theory, really.

lf, Tuesday, 15 August 2006 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

HI DERE.

So anyway. I have no idea what's going on beyond what I've been forwarding to all and sundry what I hear from everyone else. Though it has been amusing to note that apparently I *am* ILX in some eyes.

The whole referral question is pretty strange. Surely it would have topped out by now.

works fine for me in here, too. What do we have to do to stress-test this thing? how hard does it have to be hit before it poxy-fules?
-- kingfish in absentia (jdsalmo...) (webmail), August 15th, 2006 4:50 PM. (later)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Woah! Don't stress-test it yet! It'll definitely break, as it's on a shared server. It's just to fill the database with a reasonable amount of stuff so code tests have some connnection to the real world.
-- stet (bonald...) (webmail), August 15th, 2006 4:51 PM. (later)

Maybe linking from outside isn't the best idea just yet?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah, that would do. Hold on. *edits*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't believe it's only because of that newspaper thing either. This kind of "no reply from server" was happening now and then (a couple of times during the last couple of weeks - remember the previous weekend's "we're back" ?) besides the poxy fuling.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

That hadn't been happening to me at all. I was just getting poxy fuled a lot. Like, loads.

trees (trees), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Granted, but Andrew's brief message to me was clear enough:

The Boserver sells 457,000. If every single one of them tried to load ILX that'd be 10 times the average load. But still ...

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm OTM there. The hold can probably take a bit moer than it has now, right enough, so letting forlorn lost ilxors know should be OK.

I wouldn't open the wikipedia/world announcement floodgates though. After all, the real ILX surely can't be down for much longer, can it?

stet (stet), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

No idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

No, on my crappy shared space server, probably.

I put this up last week to test out code changes/rewrites for the nuILX project that's starting up. Then ILX died, and I asked for some test posts so there was actually something here to work on. then loads of people turned up!

It should be quick. ILX has 4 million posts. This has 400. :D

From the Red State piece:
"It does us very little good to coddle or otherwise allow people like Moqtada Al Sadr to be coddled."

I love it when forward leaning tuff guys use idiomatic language with abandon. It's time to stop coddling and take the gloves off! The Sunnis keep moving their leg onto the Shiite's side of the seat, so we may be forced to pull over the car. No more coddling.

You know, the observer article didn't even give a link, it just named "ilxor" as the site. For people to find it though that, they'd need to google first. So unless all the traffic is coming from search engine referrals, I really don't think it can be related to the Observer.

Seriously, Grimly or Stet, what's the deal with usage here? Can we treat this like ILX, how many people arsing about as per old-ILX can be sustained etc? Are the behind-the-scenes things going on as we all muck about? Should I feel bad for telling three other people that this place exists?

(xpost, oh)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

well, now that proper ILX is back up, we should treat this as what it is: a testing area. i guess we should just shoot over every so often and post threads insulting stet, and mocking his coding.

in seriousness, i imagine it'll be a useful place for the coding team to fuck about. but i'm assuming nobody's reading this anyway because they're all back on real ILX [trips over tumbleweed, hurts arse]

This place needs some class mongrels
It's like the all-powerful aliens have resurrected one from each nation-state over here on the toy version so that they can study how everybody interacts and determine whether the real ILX is worth saving. In a few minutes a hogbutcher, let's say Nick A, will come creeping out of the bushes.

Ruud Haarvest (KenL), Monday, 21 August 2006 02:39 (seventeen years ago) link

For those interested (though maybe they won't thank me for calling this to general attention):

http://groups.google.com/group/ilxor

While subscription is closed at present, understandably so -- I'm not a member myself -- you can still read all the posts if you want to keep track. *VERY* technical, though, so unless you can stand that your eyes will glaze over. But suffice to say a number of good points have already been addressed which will help speed up the database/reduce bottlenecks/etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd still like it if one of teh illuminati would take a shot at my question. (Are these code issues, traffic issues or a combination?)

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 14:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not illuminati but I think the issue is a combniation of both. The code as it's written is not as efficient as the amount of traffic ilx generates needs it to be.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM. The code as it stands uses the database for just about every page you see. That's ok when it's small, but i understand it's past 4gb, and the strain's showin.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Gotcha. So the code rewrite is to change our DB-access vehicle from a 4-cyl. Chevy ImpLOLa to a 12-cyl LMAOborghini. I guess one obvious question is, what if the best model available is a 6-cyl. vehicle? (I'm not doubting y'all's ability, just asking.)

I would just about get behind dumping the DB and starting fresh, and everybody could have 30 days or whatever to save their favorite threads. It would be interesting to start from scratch with basic topics like "Sex: C/D" with a mix of old-time ILXors (whose outlooks might have changed) and newcomers. But I know that's been brought up and pretty much discarded as a plan.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

There was some talk of keeping old threads seperate and only injecting them into the live database when they were bumped, but that was purely top-of-the-head gas on my part and hasn't really been checked for feasibility.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I think you may have network/router problems Al. Happened to me before with BT connect where I could access some sites but not others.

ILX is mostly down at the moment so it's kind of hard to diagnose anything when you don't know if what you're trying to connect to is even available.

Sorry, Ailsa, I just wanted to say that because once we were in Edinburgh in August and we managed to find a hotel for one night and the guy told us possibly maybe he could let us have a room the next night if the Great Northern Railway rep didn't need it. Well, that didn't work out so he said he would try to help us find another room, but when we came down to breakfast he said: "I've called round, but Edinburgh's just chock-a-block with the Festival!"

Ruud Haarvest (KenL), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 17:50 (seventeen years ago) link

The search function can kill the whole thing with just one user. When the cache got corrupted, loads of people started searching to try and bump old threads.

For some reason there's no timeout set on searches, so the server will continue with the very, very slow search until it's done. While it's searching, nothing else can access it. Hmph.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

People should've revived threads via New Questions.

jaymc, Wednesday, 30 August 2006 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeh, it was the ancient threads that did it, I think.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Point the search link to Google.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 19:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Until nu_ILX code is sorted, that is. One less overhead to worry about.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

The quickest fix could well be to put a timeout on SQL queries. But I don't know how many people have server access these days to do that.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 19:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Well. that was good for about five minutes. Is it just the search function that knackers it, or does random, viewing expanded categories etc do it as well?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 21:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Opening the categories page is another big hit, but by far the worst culprit is doing a search.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 21:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Can we stick something on the new answers pages of ILX telling people to cool it with the search function?

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

(when I say "we" I mean "someone that isn't me", obviously. Sorry.)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 21:47 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't understand why anyone bothers with the ILX search anyway. it's a heap of spectacular shit. ever since i realised google can search the thing, that's the method i've used.

the real ILX has just popped back up while i type. new answers has even less on it than it did last time i looked.

the whole thing is fucked, and is obviously going to remain so until someone posts something sensible on every new answers page saying: YO ILX0RS, DON'T USE THE FUCKING SEARCH, or similar.

at the moment it's something of a clusterfuck and i haven't really got time to worry about it.

grimly fiendish (simon), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, now there are no new answers at all again on the new answers page. Give it two minutes before everyone starts searching for stuff and it all goes tits up again...

Not as permanent move, absolutely not. It'll work fine in the short-term though while the real database is repaired.

stet (stet), Thursday, 31 August 2006 11:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Um, aren't a lot of threads deindexed?

Searching 90% of ilx is better than killing it.

One thing I noticed is that wh3rd.net give more google results than p3r.net - I was concerned that maybe deindexing threads wasn't working properly for both domains and asked a question about it on the Mod request forum. No-one answered.

compare:
Results 1 - 10 of about 187 from ilx.wh3rd.net for "tits up". (0.24 seconds)

Results 1 - 10 of about 42 from ilx.p3r.net for "tits up". (0.26 seconds)

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Thursday, 31 August 2006 11:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Searching 90% of ilx is better than killing has killed it. :(

grimly fiendish (simon), Thursday, 31 August 2006 12:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I meant searching 90% using google and only using the ilx search if you have a desperate crushing need to find a deindexed thread and think the search engine will actually work. I find clicking "random" for a week is more efficient.

Not that I'm aware of. I've been asking around to see if there's anyone with the appropriate skills. I think a lot of us could and would volunteer to have a pop, but I fear we really need a proper DBA with experience of large (4gb+) databases. Does anyone know of any ilxors who sound like that?

stet (stet), Thursday, 31 August 2006 13:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Hmm. I don't know what the question is, but I've worked with 70GB+ databases before (on SQL Server 2000). I'm not really a DBA though, more application development, so I dunno if I could help.

What's the problem?

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 31 August 2006 13:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Me too.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Thursday, 31 August 2006 13:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know the specific problem, only that the DB isn't behaving itself. There are problems with the code's scaling, but they're long term and not likely to be the source of this outage.

Currently the DB (MySQL on Linux) is in itself apparently broken -- from the outside it appears it is not responding correctly to updates, inserts or selects.

stet (stet), Thursday, 31 August 2006 13:30 (seventeen years ago) link

It does suddenly occur to me that MySQL ships with a 4gb limit. I'm sure that must have been raised at some point in the past, however, but the DB is about 4gb as it stands.

stet (stet), Thursday, 31 August 2006 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a 4gb limit on table size in MySQL, but not on the db itself.

Might be a problem with Linux file size limit?

It's unlikely - the main file size problem hits at 2G, and I'd have thought that if ILX is approaching 4G the largest table would already have passed the 2G point.

In any case, few systems still have the 2G limit.

Has something happened to the permissions for the database user? Is there a size limit on the share where the db is?

I am in awe of people using this time to make xmas gifts! I've just been filling time with more cups of tea.

jaq (jaq), Thursday, 31 August 2006 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

It looks as if some checks that were run yesterday (which should have been completely safe) sent it haywire. Then the searches to refill New Answers compounded things.

Just now best opinion is that it won't work until somebody with server access restarts the DB server.
